This is my new favorite place to get a keto-friendly meal, especially since the program I'm using requires me to eat salmon several times a week. And I love a good chopped salad. I'm not sure why they taste better, but they do. I wandered onto South Kirkwood Road on this first really beautiful spring day with the intention of getting a cup of coffee and sitting outside of Kaldi's, but I passed by this place and saw a sign through the window that showed a couple of salads and the words "keto- and paleo-friendly." It got my attention. The menu is full of those options, so if you're trying to eat clean -- lots of lean proteins and veggies, low carbs, check this place out. I got the small wild salmon salad (fabulous) but I'll be back because there were at least four options I wanted to try. And the kids' menu means I can bring my 11-year-old without her belly-aching about how I dragged her to a terrible "salad place." Beware the TIPPING PROCESS My mother who cannot see clearly and is elderly do to a disability almost tipped 20%...for her small salad. Why? Because the computer defaults to 20% when it rings up unless you change it. Luckily my wife caught it. I don't blame the employees, I blame ownership for screwing their customers so they can pay their employees less. They can pay less, and have the customer foot the difference. This is fast casual at its best! Order at the counter and the food is served at your table. I've visited the Kirkwood and Olive locations. Crushed Red features chopped salads, wood fired pizzas and shareable appetizers. Everything I've tried has been delicious. I'm impressed by the engaging, friendly staff, clean, well kept restaurants and lovely decor. They also serve alcohol to enjoy with your meal. My friends and I really enjoyed the goat cheese appetizer! I built my own chopped salad and it was fantastic with just the ingredients I like! Both locations offer outdoor seating. The Kirkwood location has a bigger patio and little better view. Great place to go to lunch with friends or for s semi quick dinner before a movie or play. Highly recommend! read more

Fleek on Greek...tasty! Chalupa by another name. I added a side of chopped tomatoes. I enjoyed the fresh taste. But didn't understand the kickstand thingy it was served in/on. OK maybe it's just me, but the idea of the waitress/waiter wading through the restaurant with the thingy... Two stars for the limited selection of beer on tap. Not many wine options either. Very friendly and helpful staff. The end of the line cashier was extremely patient w/me as it was my first time. The "bartender" was nice and answered all of my annoying questions. I got the Mona Lisa pizza and Healthy Nut salad for the combo. The pizza was really tasty and well made and the salad in the combo was small, but good. The pizza had a really good mix of cheeses and a fluffy crust. Overall, this was a really good deal for really tasty food. Next time I think I will go for a full Mona Lisa. I am someone who tries to keep active so finding a place that won't make me feel bloated and heavy is hard for a cheap price. Our family has been here multiple times. We really like the fact we can all find something we like. The food feels very fresh and you don't feel weighed down after eating here. Although it can get pretty pricey pretty quickly, so you do have to strategize on how you order (i.e. do I split a flatbread with somebody and get my own salad, or vice versa). I also must admit, there is something about the way you order here that I don't like. You order your hot stuff first, then order your salad along the line, then pay for it all at the end. It just feels awkward, especially when you are trying to order hot stuff but the people behind you only want salads etc. Tip: Don't rush ordering your salad. Take your time and review the ingredients and either use a recipe they have as a base and customize or build your own. I have a tendency to feel pressure when I'm ordering my salad because of the weird way the line is set up, so I tend to just order one of their recipes, but I'm always kicking myself later and saying "I should have ordered my salad like this....". So relax, take a minute and get familiar with the menu, and if you have to let others go by you, do it. You'll be glad you did! read more

First-timer here at the Kirkwood Crushed Red location. There really is no difference between the two except for seating. The Kirkwood location has plenty of outdoor seating which is great (weather permitting). I did not utilize this when I went cause it was a bit warm/humid (imagine that?). However, I did try some new dishes! My girlfriend and I always split a salad and pizza when we come here so we get "The Best of Both Worlds"-Miley Cyrus. This time we got the Emerald Salad and "Mona Lisa" pizza. The Emerald Salad had avocado, mushrooms, BACON (always type BACON in caps), AND pesto/butter marinated shrimp. The shrimp are really what made this salad good. They were very delicious. The best part, they were warm! I love it when salads have that temperature contrast between cold and warm. Do other people feel this way? Who knows. As for the pizza... The pizza had kalamata olives, goat cheese, feta cheese, spinach, garlic sauce, and roasted garlic cloves on top. I'm not a huge sharp cheese fan on my pizza but this was truly yummy. The olives were a little overboard (too much salty flavor for me) but I just picked some off--no problem! On a Friday evening I found myself out in the Kirkwood area and I was looking for a place to grab dinner. I did a quick Yelp search and discovered Crushed Red was only a few miles away. We found parking in the garage and made our way to the front door. The outside patio was pretty busy, but there were still a few open tables. We walked inside and were greeted right away and since it was our first time visiting she explained the process. We each ordered a flatbread with her and then made our way to the chopped salad station. This is where it got a little cray cray. I am not sure if it was just an off night or if the guy making my salad was just not in the best of moods, but he didn't seem to show any enthusiasm. I was waiting for him to ask me what I wanted to order (or at least let me know he was ready to take my order) but he just stared at me. So I said hello to him and placed my order for the mini fruit loop. He began making the salad and was chatting with the other workers. Not that I care about the guys all talking to one another, but it was kind of rude. While this was happening my date was ready to order his and thought the next person would help him, but instead she skipped over him and started working on salads for the family behind us. Ooookkkkaaaayyyyy. So once my salad was finished the guy started to walk away when my date said politely that he wanted to order a salad too. So the guy started making his salad and somehow the lady behind us and her family ended up ahead of us to pick up their salads and pay. This just seems like a crazy un-organized mess. We had to wait in line behind the family that was behind us at the beginning. I am okay waiting, but waiting for a family of 4 or 5 was a bit much. During this time someone came out from behind the counter to deliver our flatbreads....well, we hadn't even paid yet and didn't even know where we were going to sit. Anyways....we finally paid and found a table and the lady came over to deliver our flatbreads. I was able to grab some parmesean cheese and red pepper flakes from the table up front and then I was ready to dig in since the food did look tasty! My flatbread was delicious and the salad was really unlike anything I had ever had before. So fruity and sweet and refreshing. My only major complaint is that the bowl for the salad (cute bowl) was a bit difficult to eat out of since it was slanted a bit. Lettuce and other toppings were slowly falling out. Not sure how many other people think the bowls are awkward to eat out of, but that's just a small pet-peeve of mine I guess. FYI-there isn't table service so you order through the line to get your food and drinks. You fill up your drinks at the drink station and you find an open table. They have utensils, extra plates and napkins at the tables. Once you are finished you are able to just leave your plates and someone will come by to clean up (just don't leave a mess)! For the price (about $37 for 2 people after tax + tip) I am not sure if the food was worth it. I think it was a bit pricey for the amount of food we got. But I guess that's what you pay for fresh ingredients and a sustainable restaurant. I liked the concept and the food is good, but I don't know how often I'll visit. read more

I have been in downtown Kirkwood many a time and always see this place, but only recently went in for the first time. I somehow had the impression it was a fancy restaurant, so when I tried it I was pleasantly surprised at the open concept and more casual restaurant "make your own" feel it has. You start off at a cashier where you order any hot food (appetizers, pizza, etc.) and then a cafeteria style line for salads where they make as you request. I had THE best salad there, the farmer's market with raspberry vinaigrette. It is seriously delicious. I went again to get the same salad and split a pizza with a friend (margarita). I honestly wasn't as impressed with the pizza as I expected. It was a little small (it is a flatbread after all) and the cheese kind of kept falling off. Maybe it's that one particular pizza, but it just didn't wow me. I probably wouldn't get it again. For me, I'll definitely be back for the salads. Pizza, not so much. read more

Sadly this was not good. I ordered the Yukon gold steakhouse pizza. The two main components were Yukon gold potatoes and sirloin. The pizza crust was the consistency of white bread. There was no crispness or chew to the dough. Nothing crust-like. The sirloin had lots of chew. So much so that I spit out a couple of especially tough pieces. My husband, SIL and I brought our kids here for a late lunch after a day at the magic house. Everything we ordered was terrific. I ordered the regular 5 cheese pizza. If you prefer pizza without red sauce, this is your go to. So good! I ordered my 2 year old the kids cheese pizza. It was the same size as my regular which was way more than she could eat lol! My husband got a chipotle bbq salad and shrimp chowder and they were both really good. There were 4 of us on a ticket and the total was $51 which included a 15% tip. Food was good despite them getting my sandwich or whatever its called wrong, however there was a short blonde girl who talked bad about me to another co worker right in front of me for explaining that I had a shellfish allergy and the gentleman who kept making food with shrimp and then wasn't changing his gloves or the actual pans was cross contaminating my food. If people use the same rubber gloves or change them once they have reached in a pan with shrimp on their hands the pan is contaminated as well!! As I was looking through places I have reviewed, I realized that I have not published a review here even though I have been here so many times! It's a very casual place, but I love the design. The outdoor seating is great because occasionally there is live music for everyone to enjoy! This is near the heart of downtown Kirkwood and is a great stop to eat before continuing your day. On the menu are about 8-10 salads, made to order right in front of you. Even if something on the menu looks ok, I think it is always fun to customize your pizza. After you pay (you have your salad and drinks/cups with you by now), you go to find a table and the pizza is out in like 5-10 minutes (this is brought to your table). I am very glad that this place is still in business because previous restaurants at that location tended to come and go. Had a BLT pizza was surprisingly different than anything I've ever had, mayo for the sauce was excellent. The crust of the pizza has a unique fresh flavor. First time here last weekend with my mother and we both loved it. This is a good substitute for when you've visited Panera, McAllister's, and that ilk and need a reprieve. The set up is Chipotle-esque. You step up to the line and first order your hot food/apps. We decided to share the artichoke dip (very tasty) as our starter. Next you move down to the "choppers" to order your salad. We both ordered mini salads (she the Chipotle bbq chicken and the deluxe berry for myself) which I found to be a good portion size and don't think I'd upsize when I return. Next you move on to the cashiers where you also order drinks (soft drinks, wine, beer). When the cashier rang our bill it came out to $31 (we also ordered two soft drinks). I thought this was off but I didn't question as it was my first time here. About five minutes after we got to your table the cashier came back and stated she thought she overcharged us. She took our receipt to verify and indeed had overcharged us as our bill was only $26. I thought this was incredibly good customer service to come over to verify our bill especially when we didn't even ask. Tasty, nutritious food (my salad was only 150 calories but completely filling), and awesome customer service, I will definitely return! read more

My first time here! I know, I know that's really lame since they've been in business several years. The atmosphere is hip and lovely, and the menu is well laid out and very easy to understand. The hostess was especially helpful as a newcomer explaining how their system works and suggesting the Pick 2 option. I had a This Pear is on Fire ($11.95) Spiced pears, dried cranberries, bacon, goat cheese, avocado with spinach and house mix.Tossed with habanero honey dressing and topped with candied walnuts. That was the large size and I had no problem gobbling the entire thing. There are plenty of tables and booths for two or booths for four people. I saw people eating alone and families of four. Since this is in Kirkwood Plaza downtown I assume they have outdoor dining as well but I was there when it was 15 degrees! I'll definitely be back. read more

I love the atmosphere, and that they have a nice selection of wines. Who would expect something like that at, say, Pieology? Not me. The prices are fair for the very nice ambience, and the employees all seemed to care that you were enjoying yourself. All good. Okay, now, how about the food? Well, pretty good, if maybe not amazing. We got one of their signature salads called The Emerald Coast. The key good stuff included shrimp and avocado. I like it, but wished it had more dressing when I got to the bottom half. My wife likes less dressing, so she loved it. As a side dish, we ordered the Warm Herbed Goat Cheese. It was really good, although it was exactly like a cheese tart we got at Schnucks the other day, so that kind of limited the excitement. It came with some soft pita-type bread and seemingly house-made crackers, all good. The pizza was a little disappointing. We had a simple pepperoni and jalapeno pizza. It really wasn't as good as a lot of places in town. Very soft crust, toppings were kind of meh. Maybe my hopes were too high. I really enjoyed coming here, overall. Quick decent food in a nice setting with a decent selection of wines, there is a lot to like. Maybe next time I'll try a more special pizza and let them show off a bit. read more
