I work in Clayton and have been to the original Crushed Red a number of times. The food is excellent as is the Malowi Red tea. I was out running errands today and decided to see if the Kirkwood location had opened. Somehow I missed that it opened at the end of May. This location is bigger than Clayton and has a lot of outside seating. it is decorated in the same style and lots of seating. But this location has the same problem as Clayton. You have to place your order at one register and that line gets bunched up if the people getting salads don't move it along. If you are just ordering pizza you can skip the salad line but it is awkward since they have it roped off. I am not sure why they think this is a good process. It didn't work well in Clayton at least from my perspective. The other thing that is a problem in both location is the noise. It gets VERY loud in there and it is not a peaceful place to eat in my view Now on to the food which is very flavorful and tasty. I love the BBQ Chicken Chipotle Pizza even though it has quite a spicy bite to it. It makes my tastebuds sing. I also adore the Malowi Red tea which I have been unable to find anywhere else. They also have a green tea, sodas, local beers on tap and wine. I have never gotten a salad here but they offer varying sizes and you can pick what you want on your chopped salad. I talked to a manager on my way out. She says this location is busy all day long since the community walks over to their location. Clayton is more of a lunch place. One plus about Kirkwood is they can keep their front doors open and a nice breeze comes through. Food is 5 stars. Setup and noise factor is a 2 so I compromised and gave them a 3. read more

After many recommendations to try this establishment, we finally got a chance for a date night on a Friday. Upon entering, we saw a long line and not many open tables. The rule is you cannot "save" tables due to limited availability and there is a staff member standing there to make sure you abide by this rule. Having never dined here before, once we reached the first station, they happily informed us of how this should work. At the first station you order your hot items, then you do your salads if you choose then drinks and pay station. People who suggested this to us suggested we each order a pizza and salad for plenty of shareable food. I ordered the mushroom, pepperoni & sausage pizza, minus the mushroom and their caesar salad. Hubby did a craft your own pizza that he topped with sausage and jalapenos with their health nut salad. We went back and forth about their artichoke appetizer but decided to wait to see how full we'd get from the other food. They do have alcohol options but we stayed with water and salad. Luckily there was an open table once we made it through all the stations. All your silverware and napkins are on the table in cute jars and there is a station for parm cheese, etc. We truly enjoyed the food, there wasn't any left. The only reason I'm not doing 5 stars is because I felt rushed. The staff members are constantly staring at you, running around to try to take things and I felt like they wanted us out of there just so they could get the table ready for the next guest. Crushed Red has taken over a constantly revolving restaurant space on the corner of the Kirkwood Station retail space. It was a pizza place, a Mexican place and a few other places before it became the latest incarnation Crushed Red. The space has been redone to accomodate Crushed Red's style of service, which is choose your own pizza, chopped salad (hence the name), soup, etc. and move along the line telling the chef what you want in your entree as they make it in front of you. It's all laid out against the wall on the left as you walk in the door, and the dining area takes up the right side with booths, tables and chairs. Mellow vibe inside, and the staff seemed friendly enough. One thing that's really nice is that you can choose what size of salad, pizza, etc. you want - which was perfect since I wasn't starving at the time we went. I ordered the Emerald Coast salad that comes with pesto roasted shrimp, avocado, cucumbers, mushrooms and bacon, size small. And it was just the right amount, which I watched the staff prepare right before my eyes - he tossed it all in a salad bowl and mixed it up before chopping the salad a couple of times with these giant knives and putting it into a bowl for me. Good deal. The only thing I wasn't so impressed with was the price for a small salad. Almost $9 seemed a little high to me for such a small bowl, but oh well. My experience was ok, and I might go back in the future to try another salad or pizza. We'll see. read more

I absolutely love this place! I have tried several of the chopped salads, which are prepared fresh on the spot. You can add or subtract ingredients as the chef prepares it in front of you. The dressings are freshly made, as well. They expand on the flavors in the salad with a dressing that complements the vegetables. No soggy salads, here! There are Texmex, American,tofu, bean-based, and other style salads. The ambiance is a warm contemporary with booths and tables. Staff are always welcoming and accommodating. After several visits, this place deserves the big 5! read more

I was super excited to try this place out after perusing the menu online ahead of time. I'm trying to lose weight and when friends said we were going to a pizza place for dinner I thought "Oh, crap, what am I going to eat that won't be a billion calories?" Usually you can't find nutritional information for restaurants unless they are chain. So I was pleasantly surprised when I went to their website that not only do they provide complete nutritional information, but it is completely customizable. And because they use all organic, locally farmed food, the majority of their menu is quite healthy! So on to the restaurant itself. My friends and I got there and the line to get through to order and pay was a bit chaotic, this really being my only complaint about the place, but the staff was super friendly. I ordered the Shrimp and Artichoke pizza and a mini Salad-Kopita. We sat down and before I barely touched my salad the pizza came out. The salad was very fresh and delicious, though due to my own personal taste I will next time order it sans cucumber. The pizza was FANTASTIC! Large shrimp, artichoke, fresh sliced tomatoes, and yummy pesto. SO GOOD. And my entire meal was less than 550 calories! I was really disappointed with Crushed Red in terms of quality, quantity and price. I heard good things about their gluten-free pizza but found the crust was really not good. It was chewy but felt underdone even though it was browned. I think the dough is made from rice flour and it would really benefit to have tapioca starch to give it a crust. There's also no flavor. The serving size for a gluten free pizza is small, just enough for one person who isn't that hungry. Think of it as 1/3rd of a 10" pizza.the toppings are good, thw sauce ia slightly sweet and there's cheeae to cover from end to end. But with the insubstantial gluten free crust it simply isn't filling. For a gluten free pizza and a bottled root beer I paid $14. Others at our table expressed disappointment also with their portion sizes and talked about getting something filling on the way home. read more

I read so many unhappy reviews, so I was a little anxious walking in. We had no trouble at all understanding the process. We had the Hummus, each had a salad, The Spiced Pear and The Farmers Market, shared a pizza, The BBQ Chicken, and a bottle of wine. Yum for sure! Why do I bother with this place? It has gone from being my favorite place to being the worst. The customer service is always lacking. The last time I visited, they were out of all but one of the ingredients for the De-LUX Berry Crunch salad (the lettuce), but didn't mention it until they literally chopped up the lettuce and nothing else. Am I really supposed to eat a bowl of lettuce and dressing? Was that a real expectation on their part? The workers seemed annoyed that I didn't just want said bowl of lettuce either. I'm wondering if this is a management-level issue, because Crushed Red is now replete with rude, under-trained workers. I wish this experience was an anomaly, but sadly, Crushed Red is at a 0% rating for accuracy, availability of ingredients, and friendliness over the last 12 months of visits. I wanted to try Crushed Red when it first opened up in Clayton because it looked like the closest thing to Plutos out here in the in Midwest. (Please google Plutos on your free time.) I had the chance to try the one in Kirkwood this past weekend with a friend. The atmosphere was very fun and contemporary. I also thought the menu looked delicious. Looks can be deceiving. I went back and forth on salad or pizza and ultimately settled on the Health Nut Salad. The regular size bowl was plenty big and very filling. I was eager to dig in . First bite...........was disappointing. Second bite.......was just as disappointing. There was absolutely no flavor at all. Craft salads are not supposed to be bland and boring. I would have made my own but the selection looked borderline subway and went with a crafted one. I now regret that decision and should have made my own. Regardless of the lack of flavor I ate the entire salad because I was starving and I did not want my $8 to go to waste. I thought the prices were on the high side considering that the selection of salad fixings were not more and grand. They are your standard salad fixings. If you have hopes for carved meat, feta cheese and assorted fruits, please look else where. I am sure the pizza is good because you cannot really mess up pizza. I might come back again and try the pizza or make my own salad. Maybe this first experience was just a fluke. read more

Went with Stewart P. and Sean H. a few odd weeks ago. Maybe more like a month ago. Damn. I really need to get back on top of my Yelp reviews. I have a huge backlog to process and my memory is fading fast! Anywayyyy. Place is pretty spacious. You go up to the first counter when you walk in - it's to your immediate left. You tell them what pizza you want and then you proceed down the line. Reminds me of a corporate cafeteria, only fancier and WAY better tasting. I wanted a margherita pizza but was a derp and didn't read that theirs doesn't actually have red sauce on it but rather pesto-y stuff. It's really not at all what you'd think of as a traditional margherita pizza. It wasn't bad per se, just not what I wanted. I ended up going back in line and re-ordering a new pizza with red sauce. It was much better. But the star of the show, IMHO, was the salad. Yep. I think a pizza place has better salads than pizzas. Go figure. :-P Would I go back? Maybe if I was in the area, but we had a hard time finding a place to park as Kirkwood was pretty crowded that evening and despite finding free parking in the garage behind them, the place wasn't lit at night (odd?) so we had a hard time seeing in the dark. How cool!! A quick service, healthy and fun salad and pizza restaurant in Kirkwood. I was seriously impressed. The ingredients to our salad and pizzas were SO FRESH! We split a South of the Border salad, which had delicious fresh corn and avocado. I got a shrimp and artichoke pizza, which was light and refreshing, and cooked well. Peter got the Steakhouse pizza, with Parmesan cream sauce, Gorgonzola, steak, and red onion. Wow, these were good!! I thought it looked small when it came out, but it was the perfect size; filling, but not overstuffed. Good value for the money overall; it's not fast food, it's a great alternative to a sit down meal for less money, but the same comfortable environment. We're so coming back! read more

The supervisor at this location speaks to patrons in an imperialistic, condescending tone. Following multiple issues with my Uber order with regards to Crushed Red menu options and pick-up time, I called the store for assistance. The agent that answered continued to repeat "Like I said to me", interrupting me several times and told me I could go on Uber myself and figure out how to cancel the items Crush Red has listed on the Uber menu like the IBC rootbeer that 'really arent available' because - as she said "I know it sucks but thats the best we can do" with these third party vendors. I do not appreciate the lecture or being talked down to when I am not a stakeholder in Crushed Red's business relationship with Uber. If you can't figure it out, or its difficult, or know that Uber is not working out and causing issues with your customer, fix it or maybe even discontinue it. But don't get frustrated with others and put it back on them. read more

We ate there on a Sunday at lunchtime. The place was packed. Literally, we got the last table in the house. This was our first time eating there, and I admit, the stations were a little bit like Subway, but a bit more intimidating. However, since it was our first time there, we stuck to the standard menu and navigating the stations turned out to be a smooth experience. We ordered the Mushroom Medley pizza, and the Five Cheese pizza, then made our way to the salad station. My son got the Farmer's Market salad, and my husband got the Welcome Back Cobber, minus the bacon. We went to the next station, paid the ticket, and got our drinks. The Berry Green tea was yummy. We sat down & ate our salads. Both were just fantastic. We people watched, impressed with how busy they were. Our pizza's came out just when we finished our salads, perfect timing. The pizza crust was crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and there were lots of little air bubbles making it taste delicious. The toppings were a mix of cheeses that, to be honest, I was unsure about. No need though, because they complemented one another perfectly! Salad was great, but all chopped salads are great in my book. Pizza was small but decent...but really a pizza person. The negative: the staff was pretty rude. I read other reviews saying how helpful and cheery the staff was, but I must have had the B-staff. It was my first time there, but I was unsure of the counter service flow...I'm not an idiot, but the lady at the front sure seemed like it when I ordered a salad and she snipped "You don't order those here, you do it down there", and I looked "down there" and saw no one so....thanks for that. More rude service as I made my way down the line...even at the soda fountain. An employee from the kitchen literally cut me off so he could make his custom iced tea concoction. The staff is courteous and attentive. It's a bit pricey but for the quality it is worth it. The location is challenging for parking. Parking is free. Three or four times and not a bad meal yet. I've not had their pizza (am on weight losing diet), but have had their Southwestern Chicken salad twice. Customers stand in a brief line, select their food from a fairly extensive menu Then a selection of beverages including wine and beer, seat yourselves and dinner arrives lickety-split. St. Louis weather is such than sitting outside may either roast or freeze you, so I've only eaten inside. This location has hosted a number of restaurants over the years; this is the best yet and I hope they stay for the long haul. read more

This place is really good! Salads are always spot on and I really like some of the pizzas that are available. Also like the fact they are a good size for one person! Ok, maybe a slightly overweight person, but definitely not too much!! Not had the problem with staff mentioned in some reviews. They are younger (seems most people are getting younger than me!!! Lol) so maybe they are not that experienced...though that's not an excuse for being rude as one reviewer mentioned. One rub they seem a bit expensive for a salad and a flatbread pizza...but not nearly enough not to go!! And the quality is really good and consistent. Seems I'm there at least once a week! This place is tops! Great for when you are really hungry or short on time - food comes out so fast! The warmed goat cheese is amazing! The salads come in 3 sizes and even when I was very hungry post-workout I couldn't finish the large. A Regular is enough for a full meal.
