When my mother told me we were stopping here, I thought she was referring to me and my brother, but I digress. Their fritas are delicious. They have a sign at the counter that tells you how fritas started and what are in them. It turns out fritas began in Havana in the early 1900's by "firiteros" on portable carts and they were a hit. They are lean burger meat with chorizo, paprika and other spices (although the burger is not spicy at all). The delicious crispy tiny fries in the sandwich and onions make it amazing! Haven't been here in quite a while but the food is still as good as I remember it to be. The service is fast if you're looking for a quick place to eat lunch or take-out. I chose a regular frita today with cheese but my usual go-to was the vaca frita bowl with little cubed plantains, rice and beans. Writing this is making me want to come back for it this week! They have daily specials which are nice on the wallet and allow you to try something different depending on what day you choose to come. It's tasty and I love the little diced maduros & julienne fries. I do agree with a previous review mentioning the overwhelming lime taste in the vaca frita. But this can be hit or miss. The first time, it was excellent. Then the last two times, it was lime and rice. Their Tres Leches is yummy and I also love that they have that soda machine with a ton of options. The place is clean with both inside and patio seating. The staff has been friendly so far. Hopefully that will continue. And there is plenty of parking. I really like this Cuban fast-food type of restaurant. It is surprisingly good quality and they have very decent prices. I really like the food and the portions are perfect (not too big, not too small). My favorite so far has been the vaca frita sandwich. I have also seen the cuban bowls and they look great too! I wouldn't recommend coming here if you want to experience a nice night out for a date or a nice gathering, but it is definitely a great lunch or take-out spot. So hubby and I are a weekly regular. They have $2 Pan con Bistec on Mondays, $2 Fritas on Tuesdays. Their specialty is the Pan con Bistec. It didn't stand out to me, although for $2, Its great and the $2 Fritas is a great price for a classic Cuban sandwich. Don't get me wrong, its not Rey de la Frita, but its still good food. After hearing comments such as, "Cuban Guys can easily put Pollo Tropical out of business" and "Cuban Guys is better than Pollo Tropical," I gotta say that my first reaction to those comments was to judge them as biased. The reason being is that as a Hispanic and living in Miami, I grew up with Pollo Tropical and I love it. But aside from those comments, I've been hearing a lot of great feedback from others on Cuban Guys. So I had to go and try this place out and see for myself what all the hype is all about. I will say that upon arrival, my first impression was that this location was quite clean, which was a big plus for me. Now as for their service, I definitely think they need more training! It is not the best service what so ever (and main reason behind my giving of just 3 stars). To be very honest, it would be great if they had bilingual employees too. I speak both English and Spanish well, so it's not a big deal for me. But if you don't speak Spanish, you may have a hard time ordering or requesting something from some of their employees or even have a hard time understanding what they are saying. On to the main event, the food. I went ahead and ordered their Cuban bowl which is the equivalent to Pollo Tropical's Tropichop. It comes with white rice (they also have brown), black beans (no other choice of beans), diced pieces of fried plantains (which was awesome lol), and your choice of meat (whether it be chicken, steak, pork, etc). I chose white rice, beans, plantains and steak as my meat. (Side note warning! - bowl comes with grilled onions though it's not on the description of what comes in the bowl! So if you don't like onions, you will have to ask for them to not put it on). The bowl was pretty good. What I loved the most was the steak! It was cooked so well, and came out nice and hot, cooked to order and was very juicy and decently seasoned. But as to the hype and it being better than Pollo Tropical... No. I believe both places have their unique style and both are good, but that is all. As for dessert, I had their flan and it's pretty good but nothing too special. Is this a place I'll come back to? Yes. I wish their service was better but I enjoyed the food, even though the hype took it way too high. I actually look forward to going back and trying their sandwiches and their other desserts. I measure by three different things in comparison to Taco Bell: DECOR: Cuban Guys is easy to spot on Sunset Dr. You can't miss their giant blue and red sign welcoming you with its fantastically unique choice of font type giving Comic Sans a run for its money. Inside Cuban Guys looks like your average fast food establishment: plenty of plastic seating and fluorescent lights. Makes me feel I'm at home at Taco Bell. A star for it's familiar and clean decor. SERVICE: I picked a busy time here as there were a few large groups of people in front of me. I was eager to get going. After a failed attempt trying to find a sports bar that didn't put all screens on the Florida State/Florida College Football game I retreated to getting fast food to watch the Cubs baseball game at home. The service was quick enough that I made it! A star for the quick service! Sweet! FOOD: I ordered the Vaca Frita Sandwich and Yucca fries. The Vaca Frita sandwich was pretty good, but I have to say it wasn't the best. It did the trick for satisfying my junk food craving. The Yucca Fries were pretty good and tasted very buttery. So buttery in fact that I questioned if I was in fact eating a stale stick of butter. The food here is decent, but that's about it. One star for food. FINAL VERDICT: Is Taco Bell better? Somewhat. At Cuban Guys the quality resembles the price. I do love my Cuban Food, especially shredded beef Cuban food, but here I wasn't blown away.
