There was a time when Meso Maya was the go-to for upscale Mexican in Dallas. The culinary scene in Dallas has changed so much that it is not longer the case. But the downtown Meso Maya remains an icon and continues to deliver consistently good food and service. The restaurant still has the warm ambience and remains in good condition even after all these years. It was too hot to sit on the patio so we ate indoors. The interior is smaller than I remember. The restaurant still starts you out with complimentary chips which are strips, and a smoky, spicy salsa. it was great. I started with the a mescal margarita and it was excellent. The kid had Topo Chico and the wife had Prosecco. Everyone enjoyed their drink. For entrees, the wife had her favorite, the vegetable budin, which is like a lasagna. The flavors were deep and rich. She loved it. I tried the carne tacos and they were excellent! The meat was tender and smoky. The beef had been marinated for a wonderful flavor. Good quality with no fat. I usually avoid ordering beef at restaurants because I often get more fat than meat which I detest, but not at Meso Maya. Our server Luis was very good. Present when we wanted and not when we did not. Overall, the restaurant was a hit on every level--ambience, service, and food. We like the downtown location the best and will return.

Culpepper (Deep Ellum Location) This Texas-themed joint covers all the bases: steaks, burgers, and Tex-Mex, all served up in a charming historical building. It's perfect for impressing out-of-towners, casual dates, or just kicking back after work with a drink in hand. Summary: You can skip the appetizers, but jump right into the entrées and definitely pair them with some of their ice-cold drinks or cocktails. Food: *Pineapple Coconut Shrimp: Not my personal fave. It gave off chain restaurant vibes, but my wife was all over it, especially with the pineapple sauce. *Meatballs: Solid, but a little on the salty side. Didn't leave me dreaming about them later, but the kids were happy to snack away. *Combo Fajitas: Cooked to perfection.
