There are people in Johnston who have been eating this pizza for most of their lives. They don't just know what it tastes like. They know what it's supposed to taste like. I had none of that. No childhood stake in this one. No fourty year memory to argue with. Just a thick, square pie and an open mind. The first surprise was the crust. This is a substantial pizza, but it didn't eat that way. The top and bottom had real crunch, crisp and golden brown, buttery, with the bottom almost looking like it had been fried in oil. Then you get through that shell and everything changes. Soft. Chewy. Light and airy. Delicious. That contrast was the best thing about the pizza. The cheese was harder to figure out. It never really browned, even around the edges where the crust was getting dark, and the flavor wasn't quite mozzarella. Sharper. Fuller. If I had to guess, I'd say there's some provolone working in there, blended in rather than announced. I could be completely wrong. Whatever it is, the cheese tasted like something. That's not as common as it should be from a lot of pizzerias. Then there was the sauce. On this particular pie, there just wasn't much there. Thin. Almost apologetic. Salt was the only note that really came through. I didn't get much tomato. I didn't get much herb. Nothing really pushed back against a crust and cheese that were doing most of the work. And that's where Rosa Mia and I probably part ways a little. Plenty of people talk about this as some of the best pizza in Rhode Island. After eating it, I understand why. That crust is excellent. The cheese is distinctive. If those are the things you care about most, this is a genuinely good pizza and absolutely worth trying. But I'm a crust-and-sauce guy. I need both. Maybe that's also the difference between discovering a pizza and growing up with one. If Rosa Mia had been down the street from my house when I was ten, maybe this is the pizza I'd spend the rest of my life defending. I understand how that happens. This is exactly the kind of neighborhood pizza that gets wired into people that way. But I didn't grow up with Rosa Mia. I got to meet it at 59, with no memories attached and nothing to judge except the pizza in front of me. Great crust. Really interesting cheese. A sauce, at least this time, that didn't give me enough. Really good pizza. And close enough to great that I understand why somebody else might have spent fifty years insisting that it is.

We had kids with us and their food came out so fast I actually laughed. Our food followed shortly after and the pasta was truly exceptional. Just genuinely high quality, generous portions, and completely worth every penny. We were shocked at how affordable the bill was for what we got. Our server Envy was an absolute gem. Friendly, attentive, and so kind. But honestly the whole staff was like that. Other servers who weren't even in our section came over just to joke around with our kids. The table was never cluttered. A dirty dish sat in front of us for maybe ten seconds before it was gone. Joe and Esther have been building serious Italian restaurants in Rhode Island since 2002. Pane e Vino on Federal Hill. Massimo, also on Federal Hill. Bar Lino is the newest, and they've built something that has no business looking this good in a Johnston strip mall. Red leather barstools, black tile floor with white cross inlay, globe pendants, warm light, a full liquor wall. Walk in and you forget where you parked. Start with the meatballs. Two of them, in sauce, with a dollop of ricotta on the plate. Tender, dense, moist all the way through. The sauce and the meat came from the same place of intention. Sunday dinner The ricotta cooled things down just enough. Get these. We went for the grandma pizza. Fior di latte, pepperoni, black olives added. It arrived on a sheet pan looking exactly right, cut into squares, edges golden. The crust looked like it would crunch, somewhere between focaccia and Pizza Hut visually and in its golden brown texture, but it didn't deliver in either direction. The sauce soaked into the dough. The cheese separated from the top. The pepperoni carried the pie, crispy-edged and punchy, and did it well. The grandma pie has four versions on the menu. The one with pink vodka sauce and roasted garlic might be worth the next visit. If I come back again I am probably going to shoot for a chicken or veal parm because I think they probably do an excellent version of that based on all visual cues. Service was professional and well-timed. There when you needed them, gone when you didn't.

I ordered a Small Vegetable LoMein ($6.95 plus tax) and Detroit style Ocean State pizza ($18.95 plus tax). My order was ready to go in about 18 minutes after ordering online. The Vegetable Lo Mein had broccoli, carrots, cabbage, & onions tossed with soft noodles, packed tightly into a pint container. The Ocean State pizza was loaded with red sauce, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, onions, peppers, parmesan, mozzarella cheese, on top of a thick, soft chewy crust (oiled), 6 thick slices-rectangle pizza. Both the lo mein and pizza were pretty good. The pizza crust became very soft in the closed box due to the steam, so I ended up reheating in the oven a few minutes before eating. I want to try the Shrimp Broccoli pizza here, if I return to the area.
