We are relatively new to this area, and ordered takeout from Daimonji for the first time tonight. The staff are incredibly kind, the service was timely and professional, and the food was delicious! We ordered the California roll, Ebi tempura, and the Dragon roll. The rolls were fresh, but I have to give a special shout out to their sticky rice that really pushed the quality over the top. A pleasant surprise. The Thai place down the way was closing. They close at 8pm and say they stop taking orders at 740pm. Well I walked in at 738 and they seemed reluctant to serve me. Maybe if you're doing that well you can afford to be snobby and turn away good business even when they are willing to take their order to go. Many businesses i know of continue taking customers as long as the door is open and the light is on. Not apparently in the Pacific Northwest. But that's ok, I had a much better night at Daimonji. I was greeted pleasantly and seated immediately. They offered us waters and have beautiful menus. We started with a seaweed salad and a hand roll then ordered our dishes. Everything came out well plated and delicious.The salad that was included in the meal felt a little rushed as mine had mostly cabbage and my partner had mostly lettuce however the dressing was light and pleasant and not typical of your run of the mill sushi joint. I would have to say if you're flip flopping between the Saba and the Black Cod, go for the Cod. The flavors on it are unparalleled. The Saba was still quite good, there were a lot of bones in it but overall I think the cod was a star dish. Also opt for the miso soup. This place has had the best miso soup I have had outside of Hawaii. Service was polite and attentive while not being overbearing. Daimonji is a true hidden gem in the community and well worth what they charge for the dishes. I would be happy to return anytime. read more

This place was great! The fish and everything was fresh. I tried uni for the first time and Alex the sushi chef prepared it with some greens and avocado. The plate he made looked amazing and I he was so nice! He conversed with me and really got to know me while I was waiting for my sushi. This was my pre-Yelp Open Event dinner-of-choice and it was a nice one. I believe it's run by a chinese duo husband & wife: Alex and Stephanie(sp). Alex is the sushi chef. Over the course of dinner, he was very cool and a friendly person to simply chat with. I think I had the 4 Season roll, Healthy Roll and Chicken Tatsuta (still not sure, or atleast didn't taste, the difference with Kaarage). I skipped the tomato in the Healthy Roll and he put a surprise veggie in there. I joked how thankfully it wasn't mushrooms. I must've just beat a stream of customers as people started coming in after I did. I asked Alex if he knew an old high school chinese friend, who used to work there, Yin C, and he said yeah. Had a major sushi craving, so last minute my friend and I decided to visit this place for our first time. When we got there, they were cleaning up so we thought they were closing. They said they had been slow that day and were deciding to close early, but they insisted we still come on in! So courteous and sweet. We ordered a rainbow roll, a spider roll, and the eel roll. Out of the three, the eel roll had to be my favorite. I always get a rainbow roll at any sushi joint, but the color of my sashimi was kind of... Dull? Made me question the freshness. The spider roll was pretty good. Their rice is a little different though. It just has a texture that I'm not use to... Idk if thats bad or if thats just the kind of rice they like using. However, we received exceptional service. The owner gave us free fresh watermelon with our meal and gave us lots of attention. Our plate looked really beautiful! I will be back when I'm in the area and randomly want sushi. Forgot to mention that I was sweating bullets because there is no AC but there were a few fans blowing at us. I really want to give this place a 2.5 star rating, but that's not an option so I'll do my usual round-down to 2. We had: albacore, yellowtail, and salmon sushi; spicy tuna roll; four seasons roll. Everyone was just shy of okay. The temperature of the sushi was a bit warm for my liking and the salmon was super "fishy". The rolls were ok, albeit small, but nothing to write home about. Must say service was excellent. Weird though because the sushi chef took our order and explained they were short handed, and there weren't even that many patrons. So, I can imagine if there were more customers then service could turn crappy pretty quickly if they didn't have any more servers. read more

All the fish is so fresh and light at the same time and you can tell how much effort they put into their rolls and cuts. I don't think anything we ordered was a miss. My buddy purchased a restaurant.com coupon so we decided to try out this place. Passed by it many times, but never thought twice about stopping in. The employees and owner there is pretty nice. Considering that this is a Japanese restaurant, I was expecting the portions to be small. But that wasn't the case, it was actually alot and fulfilling. I love sushi, but my co-workers are more teriyaki / tempura fans. It is so nice to find a restaurant that can appease the entire group. Daimonji is a small restaurant with a few tables in addition to counter seating. Every time I've gone here I've been promptly greeted and seated. They're very conscientious that the lunch crowd only has an hour to spare so they do what they can to get you in and fed within an hour. The owners and servers are so nice! Complimentary miso soup on cold days and hot tea always ready. The sushi is fresh. The salmon is fantastically buttery quality and much better than any conveyor belt sushi. If you're a sushi fan ask the sushi chef to surprise you - he's very good at what he does! There is plenty of parking but be wary during lunch hour as everyone is trying to get into this complex for any number of eateries there. The restaurant's ambiance is perfect - bright and balanced there's enough room to comfortably sit without feeling squashed. It is by far my favorite lunch time spot. read more

This spot is da BoMb!!!! Like another Yelper, my husband and I moved from Hawaii three months ago and are HUGE sushi fans! I mean if you live on an island you are surrounded by water so fish is pretty much what you eat all the time. We live 10 min away and decided to hit this place up after discovering the great reviews and not to mention photos of "traditional nigiri." There are way too many places in Seattle that only specialize in rolls and are not authentic for our palettes. This place is a cute hole in the wall restaurant who delivered much more than great food. We were immediately greeted by the owner and sushi chef, Alex, at the door. We chose seats right at the bar so we could talk story. Not only was the fish fresh but we enjoyed listening to Alex share how he learned how to fillet fish and become a sushi chef then eventually a restaurant owner. He is very knowledgable of the taste and texture of each fish and is very passionate about what he does. The selection of fish is great and for those that aren't too adventurous he also makes rolls, donburis, and other awesome combos. We are so happy we found a go-to sushi place to satisfy our fish and rice cravings. The service was top notch and the food was fantastic! Meh. Ok, that's not totally fair. The "meh" just applies to the food. It's not bad, but as said by a previous reviewer: "it's not going to change your world", and although the fish is reasonably fresh, it's not excellent. However, what saved it from 2 star-dom is the fact that I had the most excellent service. Cheerful greeter who asked how my day way (not so good, but better when encountered with such chipperness). The waitress is awfully nice too, but it's very far from my house, and the lure of their tuna tataki salad (supposedly so good that people drive 50 miles for it) is not much of a lure for me... 'cause it's frankly not that good. Not to mention that the overall value of the meal ($42 with tax and tip) was really bad - I left slightly disappointed, unsatisfied and hungry. Meh. We went all out here and purchased numerous apps and entrees to get a feel for this place. The words that come to mind are skimpy and not-so-fresh. While the staff were very nice, the prices are way way too high for the amount of protein you're paying for. The chicken katsu was the thinnest I've ever seen, nearly paper thin. It was as if you cut a chicken breast horizontally into eigths. It's the first time there was actually more breading than there was meat. I got this dinner combo and the California roll was gross... the cucumber in it was like days old from the refrigerator (gray and slimy). The black cod (which was an extra $4 over any other protein) was smaller than the palm of my hand. That was the headlining protein of the dinner and it was tiny. We wanted sushi so our friends ordered take out to eat at our house. The sushi overall was ok - I wouldn't say it was amazing but it wasn't bad either. Mediocre is what I was looking for. The menu online was a bit confusing so luckily our friends have ordered online before. There's a dinner menu and then separately a sushi menu. Off the dinner menu, I ordered the sushi combo since I love nigiri although the menu didn't seem clear if it was sashimi or nigiri but it sounded good so I got it regardless. It said it comes with miso soup and salad but it wasn't in our order so I was really sad about not having my miso soup.. The agadashi tofu was good like most places - again nothing to scream over. The lucky maki roll and four season hand roll was good. If I could redo the whole order again, I would have made sure they included the miso soup and salad in my sushi combo and I wish I had ordered way more food since what I ordered was not enough. read more

Alex is the best non-Japanese sushi chef I've ever encountered who is making very traditional sushi. His sushi rice is always cooked and seasoned perfectly unlike some of the non-Japanese sushi chefs'. Bad and unharmonious sushi rice ruins sushi no matter how fresh the seafood on top of the rice is and Alex does it right paired with high quality seafood. I highly recommend Omakase nigiri or just ask Alex what's fresh. He will never disappoint you. Besides the excellent sushi (especially nigiri), I also enjoy their oysters on half shells from Taylor's Shellfish. Alex dresses the oysters with ponzu sauce, green onions and spicy graded daikon radish. It is my favorite way to eat oysters. As they don't have the oysters every day, I suggest you call ahead to make sure they have it. Alex occasionally has chawanmushi which is as authentic as it gets with a very delicate flavor. Their prices are very reasonable for the quality you get. Very wallet friendly compared to places in downtown. read more

I ended up here because my tire went out while i was driving home from downtown Seattle. I felt so embarrassed having to sit here and wait for slow AAA to pick me up. The people that work here couldn't be nicer!!! I am a vegan so i couldn't try the amazing sushi plates i saw going by me while i sat and wait for over an hour. I tried the edamame and drinks . I'm perplexed by all the great reviews. We came here at lunchtime and ordered some spicy tuna rolls and the Daimonji Sampler (1 hand roll, a salmon roll, salad, 2 nigiri pieces) -- both of which were severely disappointing. We eat sushi at least once a week, so we know what to look for. When my rolls arrived, I was surprised how loosely they were wrapped; they were falling apart and poorly cut. (You can see this in other reviewers' pictures.) The rice wasn't sticky enough to hold. The nori was also not dry enough: it was oddly chewy and difficult to bite through. These are basic elements that I would expect a seasoned chef of a Japanese restaurant to nail in their sleep. On to the fish: A chewy texture, somehow. Not fresh. Not flavorful. This is a dealbreaker for us. Good points? Great service. The miso soup was good, too. But all the rest was very, very wrong. read more

Boring as far as sushi goes but if they can make good cali rolls the rest of their sushi is probably good. The rolls were good, perfect size, not too big. For a sushi place, it's a bit odd that my favorite item is their crème brûlée. It's quite amazing though. :) I would suggest making room for dessert so that you're able to try it. The service was fast and friendly for the most part. The only part I didn't appreciate from the night I went there was the waitresses comment about me not eating the tuna. For the first time, I got a combo plate that included some raw sushi pieces /fish that I don't normally eat or haven't ate at all before. We ordered quite a bit and ate a lot. I had 2 pieces of fish left on my plate when she asked if we were done. After telling her yes she said, "I see you're not a fan of tuna. Oh, yeah, well it looks like she gave you the good piece, too. Very expensive." Is that not what happens at a restaurant usually? Especially when ordering a combo? People are going to leave some things behind, not finish it all, and yes, they may even waste the "good tuna." I paid for it, so hush. The comment was just unnecessary. Nothing too special. More like a 3.5 out of 5 stars. If I'm not feeling like going to a busy restaurant or to the city, I'll head over to Daimonji for some good sushi. Don't expect anything spectacular, but it does the job! I usually order udon, hot plates, or bentos from here. I personally think that the price is a little higher than I would expect since it's not to the standard of other popular Seattle sushi restaurants. As I said, I come here for convenience. The restaurant is tucked away in the Georgetown area in a plaza. There's plenty of free parking in the lot, so that's a plus :)! I have never had to wait during regular dinner hours, but there's always a consistent flow of guests that come in. The couple who runs this restaurant are friendly. read more

Wanted to try a new sushi spot close to where I live so gave this restaurant a shot. First impressions: the owner/chef is very friendly immediately welcoming us to sit at the sushi bar and kick it with him. However just walking in, I felt like I was walking into someone's messy kitchen at home. There is nothing fancy or dressed up about it. If you can get past the unappealing decor, your dining experience will be just fine. All of the sashimi was deliciously fresh and it was nice that the chef snuck in a few extra pieces to our order :) The restaurant is a husband and wife operation, which both were very pleasant to talk to; they certainly wanted us to feel like we were dining in their own home. The cost of the meal is pretty average for a Sushi restaurant in Seattle, but it's not a cheap meal option. We racked up a $100 bill between my boyfriend and I after ordering ~4 sashimi plates, okonomiyaki and sake. I would definitely come back though! read more

It's been awhile since we had visited this restaurant. About 10-15 yrs ago, I remembered Daimonji to be a low key family style restaurant where you could find a hearty Japanese meal at a good price. Today's experience, food was ok. Ordered a couple of lunch combos about $13.50 each. Chicken katsu was bit dry (over cooked) and the Saba was bit bony. I felt like I have to pick out tiny bones from Saba which seemed a bit odd for this type of fish. Service was pleasant but felt like we were suppose to order sushi. Value: Given the price it seemed like the portions were bit on the small side. Miso soup was included but tea was not ($1.65 ea). Total bill for 2 was around $40 including tax. I just moved to South Park / Georgetown area and I'm so excited I found this place. Apparently they have been in business for almost 30 years! The quality of the fish was amazing. I had a very good experience here at Daimonji. My coworkers had said it wasn't the greatest place, so I kept putting it off. I got the special which included all of this, amazingly: *chicken yakisoba *edamame *california roll (6 pieces) *veggie and shrimp tempura All this for the low, low price of $9.95. And they threw in some hot tea and miso soup to boot. This was seriously the best valued meal I've had in years. It tasted pretty good too; it wasn't too greasy or hastily made. Daimonji is a dissapointment. Their previous owners had excellent REAL Japanese food with real Japanese chefs. Now the food is fake and the employees think they know Japanese food and they really don't. If you want some real Japanese food go to the International District and check out better quality food somewhere else. read more

Jesus Christopher Robin. I passed by this place hundreds of times but the location never really excited me when thinking of sushi/sashimi/nigiri and Georgetown. Well, I went here after receiving a Restaurant.com coupon for $25 off if you spend at least $37.50. The service was f-ing ridiculously horrible. After presenting our coupon, we were treated as if we were a nuisance. If you do not like people presenting these coupons then do not market with an online company like Restaurant.com. I would have never gone to this place without the coupon so cheer up. Throughout our time spent here, we were continuously asked if we wanted anything else. Trust me, I know when asking if we'd like anything else is the norm in the experience of dining in. This older lady, who I believe is most likely the owner/manager, made the whole experience extremely uncomfortable and uninviting. I would not be surprised if this place goes under within the next 24 months if something doesn't change here. Oh, and the prices were much too high for the quality and quantity of servings. Save your money and go to Umi's or Japonessa. Hell, go to Sushi Land and get better service from a teenager. At the end of our meal we were presented with a bill with an 18% gratuity already added to the bill. We were a party of 3 so I guess that's normal if you are in hell. I probably would have tipped her more just because I will never go back there again. Don't get me wrong, the gentleman behind the sushi bar was absolutely hospitable, welcoming and filled with cheer. Too bad I had to experience the lady with the snakes on her head. Fu#k what I say, yeah? Go give it a try for yourself. The owners were so kind and you can tell they really believe in their menu. The woman made great recommendations to try some things I hadn't before even though I eat Japanese food regularly. Highlight? The agedashi tofu! I really am not a fan normally and never find myself craving the stuff, but after eating it here, I can't wait to have it again. The tofu is made organically and locally by the owner's sister. The prices were about average for sushi (IMHO). The rolls were all delicious. I definitely look forward to returning! read more
