To be honest with you, the only reason why I go to Dan's Cleaners is because it's so close and convienent to my house. I'd much rather be going to someplace that is more organized, does their cleaning in-house and smells less horrendous than Dan's. For a place that is supposed to clean clothes, it smells really bad inside. Regardless, 95% of the time, they don't screw up and my shirts and pants come back nice and laundered. They did sort of ruin a vacation day because of their lack of organization which led Tim and I to spend 4 hours in the mall when we could have been with friends and family in Boston. Uggh. Also, the lady there did offer to call me when my clothes were in so I could go get them right away. That was awesome. read more

The address of Dan's is a little confusing because their storefront and awning face Cortland but their entrance is on Gates. Therefore, a Gates address. This a family owned cleaners that does fantastic work . Really some of the most personable people you will meet in the city. Even when we are just walking by the shop and not dropping off any clothes, the owner will wave and chat with us. We have never been disappointed by their quality of work. The only reason full five stars not given is due to the fact that they only take cash. I am not sure how many times I have had to leave the store and walk down to the ATM. This is my now go-to place for dry cleaning and alteration. The shop owner is very friendly and easy to work with. The place is not very organized but they seems to be able to find things through their messy piles. I only wish they could take credit card soon and will be able to finish their work on time. I've had a few incidents that the clothes weren't ready for pick up on the date specified on the ticket. read more

My husband left me years ago and Dan's cleaners made the most gorgeous pillow cases out my Chinese silk wedding dress.They outlasted the marriage (smile) I lost 30 lbs. and D.C. Altered everything perfectly + gave me lots of compliments all the while! And they gave my my favorite albeit "tired" Rock star leather jacket a second life. And they make everything affordable. And Dan remembers everyone often by name. She makes it a warm interaction I've never seen grouchy people there... And she rescues all my stained items and returns them looking almost new... HI! when i'm in the cleaners i get to share a smile with a neighbor and make the world, our hood called bernal heights, a bit smaller. these things matter. Long and short is that they work hard, they're friendly, but they take a long time. For example, I bring some shirts in on a Monday and they'll suggest a pick up on Saturday. If I ask for Thursday, then it might not be ready. They're nice enough to call to say that it won't be ready, but then they'll say Saturday morning. So I've learned to give at least a week to get things cleaned. But they're nice, they work hard and their prices are fair. read more

I'm so happy this little cleaners is in the neighborhood! The woman behind the counter, Dan, is absolutely lovely. She knows my name and my family. She asks when she hasn't seen someone in a while. She waves whenever I walk by and has my drycleaning wardrobe completely memorized. (It's not big, but still, she notices when I get a new sweater!) Dan's prices are great- best I've found nearby. I have learned never to have anything drycleaned if I am going to absolutely need it in less that a week. There are definitely times when clothes take longer, especially if they need any fancy pressing or whatever. read more

I went here to have 2 pairs of pants hemmed ($8/pair) and picked them up a day late. They told me that they'd only finished one of the pairs that morning, which is why they hadn't been pressed. I have to ding them a few stars for would-have-been tardiness and unfinished work (I *hate* to iron!). I give them a few stars for location, super-friendly service and good quality workmanship. Note: I recommend knowing your inseam size in advance to avoid having to use their icky restroom as a fitting room. And bring cash or check -- they don't take debit/credit cards yet. read more

Update: The price for wash and fold has gone up to .80 per lb. but we are still addicted to it. I have also gotten some alterations done and to be honest I would only give two stars for that. I had asked for a pair of jeans to be hemmed and to have the original hem kept/replicated (I know places do this all the time) and we had totally agreed on that but when I got them back it was a regular hem. I'm going to bring them back and talk to her about it but I was pretty disappointed. For regular wash and fold and drycleaning this place really is great though and they are super, duper friendly. Its the customer service that brings us back. Original review: SB and I have a bit of a problem, we can't stand the laundrymat and I actually made a promise to myself that I would never go to to one again, ever. I really can't even stand the coin operated ones they have in apartment buildings (thought I haven't seen one of those since college thankfully). We just moved into a new place with no washer/dryer and haven't purchased them yet. Faced again with the dilemma of what to do with our laundry we started taking it to Dan's. For the small price of .70 a pound you can get your laundry back washed and folded to perfection. I've had dry cleaning done there too and it was fine and pretty reasonable. Also they display their alteration prices on the wall which is nice. Other places make me think the price can change depending on who you are. So we say live a little and spare yourself from that skank laundrymat on Cortland (no Bernal Bubbles, we are not talking about you) and take it to Dan's:) read more

This store is cramped, there's often a line of customers that makes doing business there a little longer than you had planned, but Dan's has good karma. The person behind the counter (who I know is NOT named "Dan") is always friendly and cheery no matter what. I don't really care that, unlike other cleaners, they don't have a database that all my info and preferences are in, or that they ask me for my phone number each time I go there, etc. This is a family business run by nice people that feels like part of the neighborhood. read more

Wow, I can't believe all the bad reviews. I've been taking my dry cleaning here for years and the only problem is that sometimes it's ready a day late. I've just learned to budget in an extra day and everything is fine. Dan (the lady who runs the place) is one of the most pleasant people I've ever met. She remembers my name even when I haven't been there in months. The dry cleaning service has always been great, and at a very reasonable price. A tiny neighborhood gem! The girl who works here can always be counted on to brighten my day. She's efficiency with a smile. Their prices are extremely reasonable and I have never had a problem with the quality of their work. Others have complained about items being ready on time - - - it's never happened to me in the 2 years I've been coming here, however I will admit that I have never requested a "rush" service. One star deduction for two minor things: 1) the place itself is very cluttered and looks disorganized and unprofessional 2) they don't take credit/debit cards. * * * bonus stars however, for their graciousness and hospitality - - I don't carry checks on me, and on one occasion I didn't have enough cash with me. Other businesses would hold your things hostage and point you in the direction of the nearest ATM. Not here - -she actually told me to go ahead and take my items home and just pay her the next time. The lady who runs this place is super-friendly and a real sweetie. I once told her that the building used to host a bar called Fuzzy Hagen's in the 1930s and she said she'd try to dig up some information on the previous owners for me. I don't have enough fancy clothes that need dry cleaning very often, but I bought a great dress at a thrift store that was too big for me and needed altering. She took me through to the back of the store to a teeny bathroom, where I put on the dress and she pinned it up. Picked it up a couple of days later and it fit like a dream! It's now my glamorpuss dress. My husband had three or four pairs of pants lying around the house that were too long for him -- we took them to Dan's and now they fit just right. So, anyone out there who is procrastinating about getting clothes retailored -- bring them to Dan's! read more

The outside of the store looks great, and it's good to have a new business anchoring that end of Cortland. Once inside though, the neatness disappears and a cramped, extremely disorganized looking operation greets the customer. A delivery of hangers lies on the floor, clothes from the morning customers are piled all over the front counter and spilling onto the floor. Nearly noon and lunch is being served in the back. The air smells strongly of the noodle dish the employees are eating. No one comes to the front. I run my hand past the sensor to make it buzz again, say "Hello!". Nothing. On the way out the buzzer finally gets someone's attention, too late. Dan, take a look through the customer's eyes, ask some friends about feng shui, take a seminar on management and organization Don't cook food where clean clothes might pick up the smell. This cleaner wants to take at least a week for anything. Further when I returned on the pickup day half my order was not ready. If you scroll down to the yelp review by Emile it looks like I am not the first customer that this has happened to. I really wanted to like this place because it is near where I live, but once I hopefully get the rest of my order back, I will not return. read more

I'm sure this place is fine under normal circumstances. They were friendly, as other reviewers have mentioned, but not more than other cleaners in my experience. They really do take a long time though. But more importantly I site the incident that led me to leaving this review. They totally ruined a shirt. Which is awful enough but when I pointed out that the shirt was now a totally different texture than when I brought it in and had some strange waves due to inconsistent shrinkage, the proprietor kept saying that's what it was like when I brought it in. Over and over. If she had explained what happened and apologized, I would not have been that upset, just sad. But oh my god, don't they know that it is better to apologize instead of lying to my face? So frustrating read more

Fine until something goes wrong, in which case the customer service was very disappointing. I had been getting about $20 worth of wash and fold every week for four months, and the cheerful lady knew my name and hung my more delicate clothes up to dry (instead of putting them in the dryer). I was a satisfied customer. Then, one week, I got home and realized that some of my laundry was missing. Specifically, towels, bathmat, socks, sweatpants...I called and informed the lady, and she said she would look for them. I was not concerned, I was sure she would find them. The next weekend, I went back to pick up my laundry and drop off another batch. She said that if she had given it to a different customer, that customer would have brought it back because nobody wants to use someone else's laundry. I concur that other people probably wouldn't be interested in my towels or socks, but I can imagine someone being too lazy to bring back the laundry. She didn't give me any discount on the laundry I was picking up that week, and basically implied that I had never dropped my "missing" laundry off with her because it was impossible that she could have lost it. I reiterated that it had to be either with her or with one of her customers, because I knew exactly how many bathmats and towel sets I had, and I was missing some. She promised to look some more. Next week, same story: hadn't found my items, was sure that she couldn't have lost them. I stopped taking my laundry there. Six weeks later, she called me to say that she had found my missing laundry. Of course, by that time, I had bought new towels, bathmats, and socks. I am glad to finally have my original items back, but I have stopped taking my laundry there as I am too concerned about it getting lost. Additionally, I was very dissatisfied with the lack of good customer service when the problem arose. An apology and discount would have been nice, but what bothered me most was her statements that made it sound like I was crazy and she couldn't have lost anything. read more

Do not listen to any of the "enthusiastic" reviews about this place. Everyone in Bernal Heights is enthusiastic. I'll admit, I'm a little picky about my dry cleaning and where I take my clothes. But it was a green smoothie spill on the white sheets kind of emergency and I went straight to Dan's. ::wrong answer buzzer:: The lady you can see working like a slave all day long through the windows hands me a blue bag w my sheets inside. Immediately I notice black lint all over the sheets. I'm sure my face looked like I was smelling a plate of sh*t because she quickly grabbed a lint/dog hair sticky roller and started rolling. That's when I noticed an ink stain on the sheets. It was from a Bic Pen, much like the hundreds scattered all over the desk where she plopped my sheet bag. I pointed out the stain and- get this- she proceeds to roll the rolly thing on the ink stain for 2 minutes before I snap and say "It's ink. It's not going to roll off." She told me no charge. Fine. Fine, fine, fine. Deep breaths. Go home, take sheets out and to my horror, my newish beautiful white sheets are grungy and have lint balls everywhere. They were like one big WRINKLED BALL of grayish-white linen. Sick. (the price was going to be $8 for 2 sheets and pillow cases. The price of my sheets were $50 at bed bath and beyond. And now they're greyish. With ink stains. Thanks, Dan's. I don't even write on Yelp. This grievance was just too noteworthy. And don't trust the good reviews. Everyone in Bernal Heights is cheery about something, be it their dog or newborn or having a gym that allows all of them inside (BARFS). read more

She will let you stand there waiting for 5 minutes while she has a small talk conversation with a customer. After years of giving them second chances this is it. No more. It's worth the inconvenience of going over to the Glen Park Dry Cleaners where they are very buttoned up, always on time and quick in and out for pick-up. read more

Never go here. I went here to alter my bridesmaid dress, I wanted it a hem, a slit added and taken in. The lady there managed to talk me out of the slit and taking so i just agreed to a hem on the length. Tried my dress on and asked for it to be touching the floor, i picked my dress up and she took it upon herself to leave it 2 inches longer than i wanted because she said I'm wearing heels and its slimming. I then asked to take more off and aim for my ankles, she got upset and said we have to pay again because its not easy and if she continues to redo and not charge everyone then she goes out of business. At this point i need my dress, the wedding is 3 days away. I go today to pick my dress on and its still dragging on the floor. She refused to release my dress to me until i paid her the second time. She was yelling and saying its not her fault. I asked to speak to a manager and she said shes the owner. I asked for my money back to take my dress elsewhere and she refused. So now I'm having my dress done overnight by another cleaners and spending a ton of money because of such short notice. Horrible! read more
