Martinis are great! The major issue is that online they advertise Martini hour from 3-5, however that is only the west village location. It is extremely misleading as this location still says "martini hour" on their menu. This location has a Negroni hour if you're into that! Food: really good! The ricotta with focaccia was so fresh and bread soft. The mushroom flat bread and the buratta were delicious. For entrees I had the chicken parmigiana and it was huge, but tasted great. Chitarra all'uovo with black truffle was also good. Such a find: charming space, awesome service, and delicious food and drinks -- what more could you ask for?! It's quintessential Greenwich Village, but even though it's been around since 1915, it feels current, new, and casual. We had a nice table towards the back so it felt like we were almost in a private nook, but we still felt attended to and part of the lively vibe. The Dante Martini and the negroni were some of the best I've had, and the pasta was so good! They even subbed mushrooms for the guanciale, and it didn't feel like it was a substitution at all. I was visiting NYC from Southern California and was walking in Greenwich village w/ my lady and we stumbled upon this place. Learned it was awarded a lot of high accolades!! Sat at the bar and spoke to Sebastien who took incredible care of us. We ordered the iceberg salad (w/o cheese or meat to make it vegan) and a delicious flatbread Also ordered the beef tartare (for me) -- Incredible. We also mentioned to Sebastien that NYC holds a special place in our heart, as we come back every December to commemorate our engagement (I proposed to my now-fiancé here last year). "There must be more to life than just Target and playgrounds." This is what I said to my friend. As soon as the words came out of my mouth, I instantly regretted it. I didn't want to offend her. She, being a mom of 3 kids, working full time and dealing with a sick parent right now. Her coming to NYC after not being out with for a year ...well. Here I am. Looking like an ass, blurting out the honest to goodness damn (!) truth. "Ugh, I agree!" Came her immediate reply. "But it's so hard..." immediately followed. She had to arrange for a sitter 2 weeks in advance, request for the day off, beg her husband to cook for the day and arrange for transportation. I'm truly blessed to have friends like her! Sitting at this legendary circa-1915 cafe with my university friend from the Philippines, our time together couldn't be more special. Dante was revived in 2003 by Australian couple Daniel Patterson and Annie . They've certainly done everything right because Dante was the recipient of the world's 50 Best Bars list twice in a row, as well as James Beard award winner. They've successfully rebranded Happy Hour to aperitivo hour, but made it truly their own by sticking to their roots in creating the most authentically Italian menu, but with a twist of modern. I mean, have you seen the 12 different variations of Negroni on the menu? How about the wildly popular fluffy Garibaldi? It's just a mixture of OJ and Campari, but when you're in Italy and you're not downing Aperol spritzes or vino Rosso, you'd naturally get a Campari with a splash of OJ. My friend's not much of a drinker these days, but I know her taste and the ultra fruity and refreshing Clever Clover Club suited her: gin, raspberry liquer, Prosecco, egg white , bitters. I absolutely loved my Negroni on tap, but I think the Chocolate Negroni is wonderful too: creme de cacao, Campari, gin, chocolate bitters with Valrhona chocolate shavings brings it over the top. While our black ink linguini and chicken Parmeggiano were both solid dishes, these are things that I've had much better in SF. Their house made focaccia with the soft burrata semigiglio was fabulous and worth the $10 appetizer size. We were blessed to catch one of the last Jazz Fridays at Dante last fall when the weather's supposed to turn but still have the warm sunny afternoon when we dined outside. This created the tantalizing afternoon of two friends catching up and sipping the afternoon away in the quaint West Village. I love history. I'm all about appreciating what used to be. Those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it, and all that jazz. I appreciate Dante's landmark status and historical gastronomic/alcoholic legacy. If the NYC restaurant scene were high school, Dante would be MVP and prom queen all at once. But visiting Dante now is like seeing your high school prom queen at your 20th school reunion--and she looks washed out, strung up, and totally eager to bring you into her pyramid scheme. Let's start with the food. The Black Ink Linguini was tiny, had two pieces of seafood total, and was way too salty. The Roasted Romanesco Broccoli wasn't bad, but the Roast Fingerling Potatoes were mini, bland, phallic-shaped potatoes drenched in cream sauce (I know, I know, the sex jokes write themselves) that was confusing to the tongue. The drinks were pretty but nothing remarkable. The Spring 2022 is the prettiest, most photogenic cocktail that ever was--but it was watered down sugary nonsense, taste-wise. The Dante's Highball had a weird stripe of icing on the outside of the glass--I kept licking it because I was so bored with the drink itself. The Pineapple Pimm's Club was pretty too, but had no complexity. And the Dante Manhattan was the only drink I liked because it came with extras and was appropriately strong. They were filming something in the next room, so we struggled to get consistent service after the first half hour. I have no idea who the celeb du jour was--some British white guy, from the looks of it--but everyone was fussing and fawning over him like the second coming of Jesus, so maybe we dined next to the Messiah? If so, I wish Mr. Savior had turned our water into wine, so we could've had a more memorable dinner. read more

My fiancée took me here to celebrate our one year being of engaged. The aesthetic is gorgeous. Sage green is one of our favorite colors so we were in love as soon as we walked in. They play good music too. This is known to be the best cocktail bar in the world for a reason. Each cocktail we had was incredible. Our server recommended the Summer 2023, the supergreen, & the cosmo spritz. We tried them all. They were all very different but so good. Our favorite was definitely the Summer 2023. The star of the night was the burrata and tomato dish - that TOMATO. Our server told us it's slow roasted overnight. The tomato is so sweet. If a bar is described as "legendary" and is ranked among the world's 50 best bars, I would've expected a little more. I thought New York City tap water had more flavor than my cocktail (I ordered one of their US Open specials over the summer). And skip on the flatbread and pasta. We opted for one of the smaller tables outside- I would wait next time, it was pretty cramped and basically on the sidewalk. Their Happy Hour ended at 5pm so we were too late to get those negronis. Finally went in person to Dante after living off the cocktail delivery for most of the pandemic. As we were for the last couple years, I was wowed by the cocktail menu, cocktail presentation, pretty much everything having to do with the cocktails. Every drink that passed us by when we were at brunch was a work of pure art. Our bloody marys were phenomenal and the little olivette drinks were delicious and the perfect size martini for someone that wants one with brunch without going home and passing out afterwards. Drinks aside, it was an average brunch experience at best. The service was absolutely abysmal - we were seated for around 45 minutes before anyone even greeted us to bring out water. At that point, we were starving and had had plenty of time to peruse the menu, so we knew what we wanted to order for our full meal. I got the kale salad and my friend got the frittata and we split an order of the scones to start. We also placed our drink orders at that time, and our meals came ~15 minutes before our drinks. There was no apology or indication that the staff was aware of the terrible service. Everything was paced bizarrely and was extremely inattentive. The food was fine - not bad but absolutely nothing to write home about. The salad did come with a perfectly cooked softboiled egg. All in all, it was simply an average brunch with incredible cocktails. Cool vibe and on Fridays - not sure about other days - they have a Gypsy Jazz Band that is terrific. They have a large cocktail menu. We loved the Dante martini because it tasted really fresh with the lemon; the Dante's Manhattan because it came with an additional beaker, and the Gingerbread Negroni which had a good amount of sweet and spice.
