For the past two years, I have stopped in David's once a week religiously after hump-day morning conference. It's a small, simple place with not much flare, but a great midweek picker upper. Their whole wheat bagel is one of the best tasting in NYC. For the health conscious: I usually order whole wheat everything bagel carved out with egg white and cheese. It's GREAT! For the days I feel like splurging the calories, my favorite option is the cinnamon raisin bagel with strawberry cream cheese. Yummooo! I have nothing bad to say except I will miss this place when I move to Cali. Thank you David's bagels for making the work week bearable. read more

Ups: awesome ham/egg/cheese on whole-wheat everything bagel. They also make a great lox with tomato/onion. Those are my two defaults. They are also open on holidays that Essa is not. Downs: Sometimes there is a line out the door, but for the most part (before noon) it's only about 10 people deep and moves very fast. They take CC, but only for purchases over a minimum amount. Final thought: Along with Essa, this is the go-to spot in Gramercy for bagels...I think Essa has fresher bagels, but David's is def. a top choice in the area. read more

Very strong bagel place for the area. There's usually a small line on the weekends but it moves quickly, and they have ample seating, which is really nice given that there's not really a park nearby to sit down and eat. More of a soft, bready bagel, probably average size. The shapes of the bagels were all different...gotta keep life interesting, I suppose. read more

Bagels are delicious but cream cheese was mot fresh. It smelled stale, I could not eat it. Not a very crowded place.

My everything bagel had about as much character and density as a slice of government bread. Staff had zero enthusiasm. Probably more spark and good customer service attitudes could be found at a soup kitchen. Heaven is a place on earth! I wish I could give this place 10 stars instead of just 5. These are BY FAR my favorite bagels in the city, (and I have tried many places). The bagels are a culinary delight- light, fluffy, with just the right amount of flavor. Although, the bagels stay delicious all day, the best time to come to David's is in the morning, when the bagels are fresh out of the oven. The bagel toppings are also extraordinary. At first, I really wasn't a fan of David's Bagels (but my boyfriend was obsessed!) However, I'm giving David's 4 stars- because I have come around (and started ordering something completely different) Anytime I go out for a bagel- I order an Everything bagel w. Lox spread & an Iced coffee. Unfortunately, the lox spread at David's is pretty bad - almost tastes papery? Not sure why this may be... Now a days [at David's Bagels Only *disclaimer], I order a Whole wheat - Everything bagel w. Chive cc. MUCH BETTER. The place itself is nothing special; Tucked away on First Avenue- there is limited seating, and close quarters as the line doubles into, and then out the door. The people behind the counter are nice - the same two checkout girls always wear smiles, and my order has always come out correctly (ever notice how bagel places are crazy?) My bacon, egg, and cheese is a standard good sandwich. I appreciate the ample amount of bacon on the sandwich. I definitely should have asked for salt and pepper on the sandwich though, because my whole wheat everything bagel toppings do not include salt, which I enjoy. The bagel itself is of an appetizing texture, and I would likely return just for a bagel with spread. The iced coffee is like that of a standard deli iced coffee - nothing special. The sandwich and coffee were a bit expensive for not crazy higher quality than a regular deli, so I'd likely go to a deli instead next time. read more

I was super excited to try out David's Bagels due to a Reddit post I saw at some point (the OP claimed that they have the best bagels in the city). I live right across the street too - super convenient location for Stuytown residents - so I figured it was time to give them a try. I ordered my classic whole wheat everything bagel with low fat vegetable cream cheese, and was thoroughly disappointed. Positive things first, it's a clean and large store, nice employees, and there was decent texture / coating on the bagel. However, when I bit into the bagel the cream cheese tasted exactly like the fridge - you know, when you leave something in too long and it picks up all the nasty flavors of the foods it's surrounded by. Maybe the store doesn't make the low fat versions of the cream cheese as regularly, because this definitely tasted as if it had been sitting around for a few days. I couldn't eat more than 2 bites, but the actual bagel seemed to be just fine, if not a little burnt around the edges. Not too keen on coming back, but if I do, it'll just be for a plain bagel! read more

David's have become my go-to bagel shop. I found David's about a year and a half ago and its been my Saturday ritual ever since. You really cant go wrong with too many things there. I am a sucker for flat bagels as of late and one of my favorite things to get now is a plain flat bagel with their light scallion or light vegetable cream cheeses. As an added bonus, the people that work there may not be the most friendly, but they are insanely fast! Even if you order a sandwich off of the grill, like a bacon egg and cheese, you are not stuck waiting around like most delis and bagel shops. By the time you get to the register, your food is already waiting for you. They are an extremely efficient group of folks. If you can get there before 11am on a weekend, you can usually save yourself from waiting in a huge line. read more

We heard this bagel shop was one of the best in the city and were pleased to learn how convenient it was for us. Stopped in for a quick lunch on a Saturday. The place is pretty simple. Walk up to the counter to order your bagel or sandwich of choice, pay at he register, and sit wherever. The tables weren't cleaned down but just needed a quick wipe with a napkin. Casual dining area. The bagels were delicious! We got an everything with light cream cheese and tomato as well as a sesame bagel with garlic and chive cream cheese and tomato. I'm not sure I'll need to try any other bagel place in the area because this really hit the spot. Looking forward to trying a breakfast sandwich next time. read more

Would have given 3 stars but had to subtract 1 for the sign inside that says there's a 10 cent charge to toast the bagel. Seriously? Years ago, when they were located at 1st Ave and 14th Street, one could easily argue this was one of the best bagels in NYC. That time has long passed. David's has always been Asian owned and operated, but in the original location, the same guy for many years, perhaps decades, was at the helm; rolling, boiling and baking. (I always thought he might be the David.) He either developed his own fantastic recipe or he worked for one of the 1960 masters who taught him well. In those days, David's Bagels came up on many "Top" lists, and in my opinion, it was far superior to any brick that was coming out of Ess-a-Bagel, which was winning all the accolades at the time (1980's). When the bagel shop moved further north, things changed. The bagels are still huge, ridiculously huge, but now they're absolutely flavorless. On some days, there is an off flavor to the dough. Impossible to explain for a freshly baked bagel. The owner (she used to pull up in her Mercedes) has never cared much for store design, presentation and cleanliness. For all these years they seem completely blind to good visual merchandising and great customer service. There was a time in NYC when producing a great bagel could get you by. Discerning New Yorkers care more about bagel flavor/texture than they care about anything else. But now, the fabulous malt flavor their bagels once had is missing, and it's like eating a large piece of chewy, tasteless bread. Given that the prices keep rising, someone needs to pay closer attention to the details and try to re-capture their youth. Although, in NYC, there are so many bad bagel bakeries, maybe it doesn't matter. Crappy bagels seem to still sell well here, especially on weekend mornings. Look at all the fools who line up at Bagel Boss and Tompkin's Bagels, both terrible choices. read more

I must say, the first time I went I was seriously disappointed. However, everyone I know that lives in the area suggested I give it another try...and so I did...and boy, am I glad! The first time I went it was a Saturday morning at 9:30 - and they were already out of everything bagels...strike 1. I ordered an onion bagel with egg and cheese on it..it was eh. It wasn't as 'ooey-gooey' as I would have liked it. My cousin then suggested that I ask for it toasted next time. So, thats exactly what I did. On another weekend morning, I walked over, ordered an everything bagel toasted with egg, cheese, and turkey bacon ($ .10 extra) and boy was this amazing. It was just how I like it. The most perfect amount of ooey-gooey and the bagel itself was perfectly fluffy and crunchy. There is usually a long line on weekend mornings, but it does move pretty quickly. Definitely my go-to for bagels on a hungover weekend morning! Does the trick! read more

Very good bagels here, but NYC is the epicenter of great bagels, so I would Rank it #3 (along with H&H, Tal & Zuckers) among bagels in Manhattan. In my opinion, Ess-A-Bagel is the #1 bagel in the city, followed by #2 Jumbo/Murray's and then #3 H&H/Tal/Zuckers/Davids. And if you like everything bagels, try Zaro's in Grand Central...not that the bagel is the best, but they put a ton of 'everything' toppings on both sides, not just the tops, which I love. read more

I stumbled across David's bagels while looking for a place to get a pizza bagel on menupages.com. Why I wanted a pizza bagel I forget... but I wanted one. I walked a fair distance from my place of work to this bagel place, but when I ordered a pizza bagel, they laughed at me (*sniff*) and said that they took them off of the menu a very long time ago. I guess I should have called before I trekked down there, but oh well. Lesson learned. I ordered a toasted bagel with tuna on it instead, and when I came back to work to eat it... there was a hair in the tuna. It was a disappointing day. read more

There is intense controversy over who makes the best bagels in the East Village area, and it basically comes down to David's Bagels vs. Ess-a-Bagel. David's Bagel makes a "lighter" product than their counterpart a few blocks down. In other words, eating half a bagel won't feel like a rock is sitting in your stomach for the rest of the day. Another important advantage David's has: THEY TOAST THE BAGELS!! Toasting goes a long way, especially when Ess-A-Bagel not only refuses to toast bagels, but they give you a nasty attitude when you ask. The staff consists of a friendly Thai family. Sometimes they get bogged down in the morning rush, but they are always pleasant and they know how to put a bagel together!! My personal favorite is getting a nice, toasted egg bagel with some whitefish spread. I'm also a fan of their sweet cream cheeses (strawberry, walnut raisin, etc). If that's not your style, they have more savory cream cheeses and they'll also throw together some bagel sandwiches with egg or a variety of deli meats of your choosing. It's a very casual venue. Sometimes the tables aren't wiped down, so you'll have to take it upon yourself to brush off some leftover crumbs from previous customers--no big deal. In summary, when you go to David's, you can expect fresh (toasted!) bagels all day long with a large variety of spreads and other toppings. This is my go-to spot for all things bagels. The bad thing I gave to say about this place was while I standing on line to pay for my bagel I did see an employee drop a bagel in the floor while refilling the bagel rack and he picked the bagel up and threw it back in the rack along with the other bagels. I've been going to David's for awhile now and the actual bagels are quite good. But the service and the price leave a LOT to be desired. When you ask for your bagel to be toasted they're either not toasted or toasted so lightly that they may as well not be toasted. The bigger problem however is the price. I just went today and got three bagels, 2 of which had whitefish. $16.00?!?! Are you kidding me? $16.00. I know whitefish is something of a delicacy but i think that kind of markup is WAAAAAYYYYY over excessive. So I think today, 12/26/2014 marks my last journey to Davids. Need to go where they pay attention to what i say and don't charge me an arm and a leg. read more
