Diego Pops is a healthy & trendy American-Mexicanoption. It's not that the food is bad, it's just not traditional Mexican. Since I am an out-of-towner, I was craving authentic Mexican and this just wasn't it. That being said, the corn queso dip was out of this world, and using plantain chips was different for me, but a good-different; can't wait to recreate that option at home. I came with a group of maybe 10+ people and not only did the workers do a phenomenal job with us, I saw that there were SEVERAL large parties at the same time! A+ for their attentiveness to all the customers and ability to handle so many people. Note: this place is NOT somewhere to go if you're aiming for intimate, formal meet-ups, etc. It's very loud (not in a bad way), good for parties, celebrations, etc. I forgot the server name but she did an amazing job handling our party from when to bring out the drinks, getting our orders, answering our questions, etc. She was extremely knowledgeable and allowed us to make modifications/adjust our pre-set menu to how we wanted it. Food came out SO QUICKLY (and everyone's dishes were correct/none had to get sent back!) Portion sizes are good. Lots of variety with the tacos, salads, bowls that it can really suit anyone. I thought the plantain tacos sounded weird but somehow it works. I got the Brussels sprouts tacos and skirt steak (100% recommend). The meat is a little dry but the sauce/condiments make up for it. Overall this place was average compared to the hype. It's very cute ambience in there and good for big groups. But the drinks were watered down for it being $13. According to the Yelp wait time estimate, there would only be a 5-min wait at our arrival time; however, when we arrived, we were informed that it was an estimated 45 min wait for a party of 2. Thanks to some recommendations I found on Eat Gluten Free AZ on Instagram, we stopped at Diego Pops near our hotel in Old Town Scottsdale for happy hour where all apps and margaritas are half off. They have a marked gluten free menu which is important to me as a Celiac. I was told that their fryer is dedicated but flour tortillas are stored near it, so to avoid potential cross contamination, avoid the fried foods. After being put on a 15 minute wait list, we were seated outside. The weather was fantastic so it was very comfortable in the outdoor dining area next to the bar. On the table are 6 different sauces. Try them all - my favs were the pink one and the light green serrano one. We got a frozen house blue raspberry margarita, 2 Diego (house) margaritas, a cheese quesadilla (not GF, but my husband loved it), elote (great), a bowl of tortilla soup (12/10 it was delicious), a corn cheese dip (fine) with tortillas rather than chips to avoid potential gluten cross contamination, and a pineapple pork bowl with coconut rice (not a fan.) Between ordering our drinks and when our food came out, it was like maybe 40 minutes. We didn't mind because the weather was good and we were chatting and had our drinks, but our waitress kept updating us that she was on the kitchen to bring out our stuff. We were like, "it's fine." She came out 2 more times and said the kitchen had lost our ticket. Whatever, we were in no rush. Stuff happens. She was super apologetic even though we didn't complain and the manager came over and gave us vouchers for 6 free tacos and comped our entire meal!!! We told them it wasn't necessary and we could pay but the waitress said it was thanks for being so nice and understanding. That made me feel sad that they clearly deal with a lot of rude, unreasonable people. It wasn't necessary to comp our meal or give us free taco vouchers. We did tip her in cash an amount that would have been 1/3 of the original bill. Please don't go expecting free food but if you're in Scottsdale, please go check out the food at Diego Pops and get the tortilla soup for sure. read more

Happy hour boasts $6 select (maybe 8oz) margaritas (two of us ordered the blended strawberry marg) one had the wine (she was not overly impressed.) This spot is in a great location and is a cute little spot. We went with a group of 9, for dinner the week after Christmas. The food was ok not great but not horrible. The staff was not really present so I am not going to judge them and it was packed. I do have one note, if you go in a large group they will only split the bill and not take separate orders. We ordered the Chips and Guacamole which was pretty good and the addition of plantain chips was nice. I had a crispy shrimp and a charred flank steak taco. The shrimp was not bade but I did not feel the crispiness of them and they were covered in cabbage(not my thing). The steak taco was just not good, the meat was dry and not very flavorful.
