I cannot say much as when I stopped by in my search for a particular machine ( on Yelp they are regarded as a retailer as well as repair). I stopped in on a Friday mid-day sign said open. I walked in and not a soul to be seen. For as small as the little store front is- it is kept quite tidy. The parking you need to know it's right basically backing out of a spot on to Hwy 12 type- so not always the easiest or safest to do. I wanted to leave with some sort of actual interaction but left without. I didn't even see a bell to ring or a door chime to let someone know There was a body in the store. I have a Kenmore sewing machine (circa 1968) that was not working. My husband tried to fix it and we thought it was the motor so we bought one on ebay. It still didn't work so we took it to Max at Discount Vacuum and Sewing. Like all the other sewing machine repair shops during this pandemic, they were booked solid for about a week so we dropped it off. Exactly as promised, Max called and told me that it was a loose wire and it was fixed. I doubt that he would have charged me but I decided to have it serviced anyway. Family have purchased from Discount and I was underwhelmed by big box stores as I just wasn't finding helpful sales folks. I had spent a lot on a Dyson vacuum, but it wasn't doing the job. I have pets (dogs and cats), and an old home - it's sort of a war zone of dust and pet hair. I saw some new, cool vacuums that I thought were cool, but that isn't what they sold me - they sold me a reburbished Electorlux and explained how it would do a better job for less. Their explanations were clear and made good logical sense, but of course I would only know after I got home. I have to say-Very Disappointed- I had to wait over a month to write this review, because everytime I think about this place I get mad, I have always chose the local businesses to take my business to. I have gone to Discount Vacuum in the past. In Fact Last year I bought a Kirby Diamond Edition Vacuum from them. So Imagine my surprise & disappointment 1 year & 1 week later, I take my Kirby Vacuum to be fixed, It lost power- I just wanted it fixed. Owner treated me as if I was blaming him that the Vacuum was broken, He plugged in the Vacuum and his first words was this was unfixable, I explained he hadn't even looked at it. He proceeded to take apart a similar Vacuum, that was behind the counter and show me all the components, and said "see how intricate this is, How do you expect to get this fixed? I explained that its a Kirby, I was raised on them, My Grandmother's Kirby worked forever that he should at least look at it, since he was the one that sold it to me, So he reluctanly took my name & number, and took my Vacuum. I then turned to Facebook for Recommendations, where I was referred to a Kirby dealer. So I then called Discount Vacuum told him I was picking up my Vacuum, That I didn't feel confident that he had it. When I went to pick up my Vacuum, it was in the same place it was when I dropped it off (3 days prior) he hadn't even bothered to look at it. As I was retrieving my Vacuum, I told him how disappointed I was with his Customer Service, If he felt he couldn't fix it, he could of recommended someone. His Response was it is unfixable. My Response-It's a Kirby one of the best Vacuums in the world, I was told by Kirby Totally Fixable. Service Guys Response- Kirby is only going to try to sell you another Vacuum. Worst Customer Service Ever- Knowledge of product he sells, minimal I work in the Customer Service Industry- So I expect good service, Not No Service As a Side Note Kirby Fixed my Vacuum, -Same Day Service- Just needed a brush replacement, My Vacuum works great now. This is a follow up to my post of 3/27/19 I picked up my Simplicity vacuum from a repair shop in San Rafael and I am extremely pleased. My vacuum runs as it did when I first purchased it 4 years ago. ALL parts were covered under warranty. New handel, new wiring harness everything needed to repair my vacuum PROPERLY. I was shown pictures of the melted wires in the handle reason why handle was getting extremely hot. (Handel had NOT been hot prior to new cord installed by Max ) The person at this shop recommended I purchase a new brush roller, that this one needed to be replaced and noted that the new cord which Max had installed was not a genuine Simplicity replacement part. I about hit the ceiling.... first I had just purchased a new brush roller from Max for $65.00 maybe 3 months ago. (After Max replaced the brush roller that is when the problem of my vacuum shifting from carpet to floor by it's self began.) Second I had just paid Max $84.00 to replace the cord and it's not even a genuine replacement part!!! The final nails in the coffin was when I was asked if I knew why there where all these "extra" holes in the handle and if the person who did these so called "repairs was a certified Simplicity dealer. From now on for ALL my vacuum bags, filters, repairs needs I will make the trip to San Rafael to support HONEST business dealings. read more

I had two older vacuum cleaners in need of help. One of them just needed a tune up and the other one did now work at all, possibly the napkin inside the machine did not assist in its operation I got them back within a couple of days and they looked practically new. The "napkin" one only worked for a short time and started to make a terrible sound. I took it back to complain and figured I would be in for fight but they very graciously tested and fixed the vacuum cleaner. It was ready the next day and they did it free of charge! I love a place that stands by their products and service. I would and will go back ... probably the sewing machine next time since both vacuums are operating very well. read more

We had the pleasure of working with Karen when my father and I stopped into this shop. We had been looking for a replacement belt for our vacuum for awhile and while driving down Hwy 12 towards Sonoma we spotted this store. It was convenient to pull right is as they have several parking spots right outside their front door. Karen greeted us immediately and was able to discern exactly which belt we needed right away (we just had the operating manual from the vacuum with us). We ended up buying two of them since she had them in stock - you just never know when we are going to need another one. She gave us some great tips on how to go about replacing the belt and certain things to make sure that we did when cleaning it out. Max knows vacuums! I was looking for a quality machine that would last a lifetime. My Kirby that burned in the fire did an excellent job but it was a heavy machine. He explained the differences between machines and guided me in getting a vacuum that would suit my needs. I love my new upright Sebo and it does an excellent job with my thick carpet! I highly recommend Discount vacuum and sewing if you want a quality vacuum! He even has refurbished vacuums if you can't spend the money on a new one, but still want a good machine. read more

I do not like having to do this. I believe in going to local, small businesses. I support them. Now, I'm not saying there was any bad intention but, I took my mothers sewing machine to this place. It needed a service as it hadn't been used in years. I left it there and was told it's $120 dollars to get it serviced and if anything else was needed we could figure out what and how much it would cost from there. They called a few days later and told me the cord that attatched to the pedal was bad, and that they are hard to find and if I went to eBay and could find one, there was no guarantee it would work. I was aware that he didn't really want to or have the time to search for one but maybe he could at some point and he would keep the machine. I went looking for one. Found one at a reliable site that deals with Elna sewing machines. I bought it and brought it in to try. It worked but then there was a problem with the pedal itself. I was told they had a pedal to try and that he would call in a few days, which he did. But then it was that something was wrong with the tension. He had tried to adjust it but it was a bad machine. He asked if I was the original owner. I told him it was my mother's and had worked well many years ago. He told me it was a bad machine and I told him I didn't want to keep spending money if it was bad. He told me it would be $150 dollars because he wanted to be fair to both me and himself. When I went to get it, he lowers the price to the original $120. Now this is my complaint, and it's not that he couldn't fix it. My complain is that I was charged$120 for nothing. And when I took it to another place, everything was fixed in 45 minutes and I was told that the timing had been set completely opposite of how it should have been set and that was why the tension was not working. It's possible that he did not touch the timing. But then why was I charged $120 dollars? Had I been told originally that they couldn't fix it or if it had at least been serviced in ANY way other that just telling me that it was a "bad machine" and telling all that is wrong with it I would not be complaining. Certainly a good business that wanted return customers would have not charged me. As I said, the machine works just fine and it took a knowledgeable person to fix ALL of it , in 45 minutes. I was charged $25 dollars for the part it needed. read more

i purchased a hose for my Eureka vacuum, of which i have 2 alike for both my home and guest house. Since i have 2 of the same, one with original hose that worked excellent, the other hose stopped working, so i purchased another one from this store. I noticed the new hose was not picking up well, i switched to the one that worked fine to make sure it was not the vacuum, but the hose, I took their hose back to the store, they took it in back, came out, said it worked fine. I returned home and again, it barely picked up even dust. I returned to the store and told the owner it was defective. He insisted i bring in the vacuum, i told him the machines both worked well with the hose i had, he refused to give me a replacement. I basically pushed the hose onto his counter, he threw it down on the floor at me, and i left it and walked out. I then went to another store, to buy a new hose, and mentioned to that owner what had happened, he said the guy is a "crook" and brags about ripping off customers.. i suggest people go elsewhere to do business. read more

The woman comes over looks at it for a second says nope its fine and went back to her computer. And that was it. I have been a customer of Discount Vacuum and Sewing for many years. They sold me my first high end vacuum and I have also purchased reconditioned machines from them. Both of the owners are very knowledgeable about their products and operate their business in a very honest way. They tell you the truth about what a machine can and cannot do!! I still own my original machine and even though I have suggested it might need replacing, the owner informed me after a service that the vacuum was still really good. They also sell sewing machines but I haven't had experience with those products. Discount Vacuum is a great choice is you are looking for a quality machine that the shop owners will stand behind. I recently had to decide if I should repair the vacuum I had or purchase a new one...so I brought my old faithful, but no longer operable, vacuum to Discount Vacuum and Sewing to see if it was worth the effort and expense to repair. There were two people working there, a woman at the computer and a man at the counter...He looked over my old machine and told me it would cost more to repair than to buy a new one. They offered me a number of different brands in different price ranges and didn't pressure me when I told them what my budget could afford. I retired my old vacuum and bought a floor model that was within my comfort zone and took my new faithful home and put it through it's paces...I am so happy with what I have that I want to tell anyone reading this that if you want to shop for a new vacuum, then go to this shop!
