Dishes is across the street from my office building so it makes sense I'd grab some quick eats prior to hitting the office or running out and grabbing something for lunch. I typically prefer the mornings just so I don't have to elbow some admin to get to the deviled egg salad. The mornings are a bit quieter and less tumulty. The food's good and freshly prepared and restocked quickly (so you don't need to spoon out the last dregs of the egg crostini thing). Only two minor caveats: first, the place is typically busy (prohibitively so) and: two, the prices are 25% higher than most local breakfast/lunch places. To the first: can't complain if everyone else knows that this is a good source for well-prepared, relatively healthy food. The eggs are great and the aforementioned deviled egg salad rocks. I also like the noodle dishes and pretty much everything else I've purchased from Dishes. And since I'm so close it's not like it gets cold. The second part, the prices, doesn't seem to deter people from waiting ten or more minutes on a line that snakes around the back/seating area, and while I sometimes go elsewhere just to avoid the line, the prices aren't much of a deterrent. Occasionally they are, especially when I score one of the flourless chocolate mini-cakes or a chocolate chip cookie. But overall this is a good location to score solid eats, provided you don't mind waiting in line and you don't mind the occasional elbow or blowout/drama from two of your fellow Dishes patrons. This place gives me a heart attack during lunch hour. There is no rhyme or reason to their lines!! Also, the food is rather pricey. The set up is not very efficient, resulting in utter chaos. I admit the food is pretty tasty and they have tons of options. The decor of the place is brightly lit and very awakening...you're blinded by the white walls, bright lights, and huge fake fruit. Looking inside the restaurant already wants to go into the Dishes, as the bright ambience and healthy vibe reach my appetitie. For my lunch, I got a cup of Chicken Corn Chowder and seven grain roll. There are other different types of special soup you are welcome to try--just ask--and they look very hot and delicious. Other dishes like sandwich, salad, dessert, entrees are also there enticing your love for food. Cam here recently to meet a friend for lunch. It's located in a very busy section of manhattan ( I guess which block isn't?). Tons of office workers, finance type folks go quickly in to get a salad, soup, sandwich and then fly out to go back to their office buildings. Dishes has a few locations in manhattan. They offer a nice selection of fresh foods. I decided on the "salad bar" and grabbed grilled veggies, chicken coconut and a chicken breast. All well made and tasty. Chicken was moist which is rare for a salad bar. As for the price, Dishes is a tad more expensive then conventional delis but the place is more upscale and food quality is quite good. So I came here for lunch today and the food totally did not meet my expectations. I had the chicken stuffed with goat cheese and sweet potatoes (first bite and I noticed the chicken was not fully cooked and was pink in some parts, yuck!), the orange roasted sweet potatoes was good, the salmon was very dry and tasteless, the uzbeki carrot and raisin rice pilaf was good. The pasta and veggies were average and I def make them at home. Bought lunch from the salad bar today. I had marinated tofu, greek salad, roasted beats with walnuts, no mayo coleslaw, grapefruit quinoa, and roasted eggplants and peppers. It was delicious but expensive. $16.15. I realized I put a lot of heavy ingredients into the salad but still it was more than I expected. I go to Dishes pretty much everyday, even though there is a very nice (and much cheaper) cafeteria in my office. Why? The sesame noodles with tahini sauce. Don't get me wrong, everything they make is fresh and (usually) delicious, but I am seriously addicted to those sesame noodles. Wouldn't recommend ordering from here if you're doing delivery for 5 or more. Ordered the Beef Pho off their menu. They literally just brought me a bin of beef slices. No noodles, none of the other ingredients listed. How disappointing. They forgot some other items as well (1 soup and 1 sandwich), but I thought the Pho incident was the most bizarre. The food is always delicious but the service negates almost every delicious morsel. I placed an order online at 8:54 a.m. and when it was received an hour later it was incorrect. It is now 10:41 and the corrected order is no where to be found. And to pay $22 for pancakes and eggs is ridiculous to begin with (my kids wanted pancakes for Bring Your Kids to Work Day!). Their lack of any customer service or urgency kills the experience. Basic rule of business: Do what your great at. And Dishes, you're great at food, AWFUL at delivery. Skip delivery. Hands down the best grab-and-go breakfast spot in the area. The hot buffet has so much great stuff I always get too much just because I can't pass it up... Brioche French toast, pumpkin pancakes, scrambled egg whites with stewed tomatoes and roasted mushrooms... And for hand-held goodness, try one of the egg white wraps with turkey sausage or one of the monster scones. Also great coffee and smoothies. The reason why the proportion of highly-rated reviews and number of reviews seems low is because midtowners want to keep this place a secret. (Myself included, until now.) Simply put, Dishes is amazing. Sushi Fridays, Coconut chicken fingers, Asian noodle soups, mac and cheese, kale salad....basically EVERYTHING they put out is incredible. The hot/cold buffet is delicious, it's so easy to spend $20 on lunch here because everything looks and tastes SO GOOD. This place literally can do no wrong. Doesn't matter what you decide to get...create your own Salad, by the pound prepared food or noodle soup ... You cannot get a bad dish. It's more expensive than the regular delis but that because it's way better. I'm a huge fan. Their delivery is prompt too! This place is convenient but does not live up to other dishes locations. This is a express version of the store where they sell sandwiches, smoothies, yogurts, danishes, and soup but I still expected the level of satisfaction from other locations. Got a turkey avocado hot sandwich that was pressed on a panini maker. It was too salty and very little avocado. Bread was soft and fresh. Was $11 pretax, but size is very large. I hear there is some serious craziness during the lunch rush so I really can't be bothered with any of that, thus I order delivery, which is why I rate dishes three stars. The delivery takes FOREVER. Usually you will receive your lunch order over an hour after your order is made. Be advised. But the food is GREAT! This place is absolutely racist!!! I went into the store to request a sandwich. The person making the sandwiches asks that I pay first. Fine, no problem. (I don't see anyone else paying in advance). Fine, maybe he wants to expedite things. So, I pay and come back and he asks if I paid. I say yes and he asks for my receipt. I show it to him and he walks over to the cashier to ask if I paid!! He DID NOT ask anyone nor did he triple or quadruple check anyone else! The manager was no help and said he would "talk to his employee" and said the employee was wrong for continuing to verify payment when not doing it for anyone else. I demanded my money back. Best serve yourself 'salad bar' in midtown. Always an excellent variety that changes day to day with high quality dishes you might find in more upscale restaurants. Love the coconut chicken fingers, sliced steak, salmon, Vietnamese spring rolls, & sushi Friday's. Always recommend filling up on proteins and veggie sides. When you're paying by the pound, a savvy New Yorker navigating the ubiquitous salad bars knows to stay away from rice dishes which end up weighing more and aren't worth the price per pound. Restaurant is super busy especially during the lunch rush which is to be expected in most midtown eateries. Their breakfast bar is definitely impressive with a large variety including my favorites...perfectly not overcooked scrambled eggs and delicious turkey sausage. Coffee is also excellent. read more

It is unfortunate that yelp restricts your rating of a place to all encompassing metric of 1 to 5 stars, because if it were possible, I would give this place 6 stars for the food and 1 star for the service. There is a reason, that despite the most inefficient service possible in the ultra competitive food landscape that is Manhattan, this place is still in business. I eat salads often for lunch. Not because I think salads particularly taste good, but simply because the rest of my meals leave much to be desire nutritionally, and if I want to have some semblance of hope of living to see my grandchildren, drastic measures must be taken. So I eat salads. I've had almost every salad in NY you can think of. From the awful deli salads to the just as awful but more expensive salads from Chopt or Just Salad. The salad from Dishes destroys them all. Using fresh and tasty ingredients with some of the most delicious dressings you can conjure together, Dishes actually makes me enjoy eating salad. Tough feat. The rare times that I eat from their prepared section, it's always a hit. The food is top notch and they always have an interesting selection of food. Granted this food is expensive. But it's not that much more expensive than eating a good deli sandwich, two slices of pizza, or even a horrific salad from Chopt. So with food quality being top notch for even Manhattan, you'd think whomever owned this business would be busy finalizing the financial statements so they can flip this place over to a private equity firm, but I have a really difficult time seeing how they can possibly make that much money. Why? In one word, staff. Imagine a staff that never consistently opens on time. Imagine a staff that sees a long line queing up during lunch and just stares back at them. Imagine a staff that works as hard as possible to do the least amount of work. Yeah that's the staff that can sink what would otherwise be a sterling place to have lunch. Good job. Dishes would get 5 stars if lunch wasn't wall to wall people clammoring around the buffet and getting angry with one another for 'cutting' even though the sign clearly says there is "no line"... But I digress - this food is fantastic. The buffet has perfect chicken tenders with a green coconut or sweet chili dipping sauce. Then the balsamic mushrooms, cole slaw, guacamole, israeli eggplant salad, morrocon salmon, fried chicken, miso salmon...great. The sushi on fridays is also awesome. But luckily I had a bag of change I was intending to take to the bank, so I figured, hey, annoying to count, but at least I can get some lunch! Nope. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. The prices are ABSURD - no matter what you want to get, it's expensive. The food is INCREDIBLE - always yummy, always presentable. So I guess this is where one would say, you get what you pay for, but come on. 8-9 dollars for: 1 - black currant yogurt 2 - side toppings (diced strawberries, walnuts, granola) 3 - a banana This is my daily breakfast and it costs me more than it would for me to feed a child in Africa for a month and pay for his hospital treatments. I no longer go to Dishes for lunch, as I normally go for the buffet selection, but even being moderate, a single serving rings me up around $15 bucks. Fridays are hella worse, as they whip out the southern fried chicken and the mac n cheese which you have to get which makes things hit the $20 insane limit. The lines are usually long but their cashiers are extremely fast and you're out before you know it. My suggestion to them would be to drop the $ per pound to something more affordable. read more

Let me start this review by saying that I have been going to Dishes for at least five years. The options are plentiful, the dishes are creative and visually stimulating. It's a candy shop for the savory. I don't know what's happened over the last year, but I have consistently noticed the food to be over salted, and the quality has gone down. They say they use organic when possible, but I am highly doubting it. The prices are getting more expensive. I got a soup, and three small sides and the total came to $28!!! I mean... The clincher for me today was the fact that my schedule forced me to arrive there at 12:40. I have been vehemently planning my visits pre-noon to avoid the insanity, but today it was unavoidable. Forget the attempt at sushi. I got shoved and prodded more times than any jalapeno tuna roll is worth, but when I actually got my hands on the tongs to grab some sushi, I was literally shoved aside by an employee! I was so angry I got into line without sushi - a sin on Fridays...To be shoved by rude, disgruntled Manhattan residents is one thing - but by the employees???? I get to the cash register, clearly struggling with what's in my hand, only to be greeted by the rudest cashier (even for Manhattan standards). She makes no effort to help me, throws my food in a bag and shoves it to me and asks for my $28. I paid and I jammed my self outside back to the sanity of the streets of Manhattan, and took a deep breath, feeling like I just escaped the battlefield. This place is an EPIC fail. Placed a catering order for assorted sandwiches and salad for about 10 people. When to food got to us it came with the wrong dressing (after I specifically told them on two separate occasions that I wanted the ginger dressing). Some liquid had spilled onto about a quarter of the sandwich platter and we had to discard a quarter of all the sandwiches. I called Dishes on three separate occasions to discuss and was told each time that my call would be returned by a manager. When it wasn't, I contested my charge on my AMEX to get their attention. An adjudicator at AMEX got me on a conference call with the General Manager, Amy Meltzer. She was obnoxious and basically called me a liar claiming that I never called to complain. She then, reluctantly and insultingly, offered me a small salad the next time a came to Dishes. This women obviously does not understand the first thing about the hospitality business. Sometimes businesses survive despite the ineptness of the owner and/or manager due to other factors such as location. This is a classic example of such a case. Believe me, having managed the Food and Beverage Department of a 5,000 employee hotel, I know how the business is suppose to work. This annoying, inept woman has costs Dishes all of my future business. When all she needed to do was acknowledge the mistake and make a good faith offer. I have eaten dozens of egg sandwiches from this place- and enjoyed them- but the last few experiences have not been good. A couple of weeks back, I ordered a toasted bagel and I was served the smallest, flattest bagel I've ever seen. They put it in the panini press, which I clearly wouldn't ask for. Last week, they had run out of bacon very early which is my main reason for going here. Today we were denied service at 1025 because they "just started cleaning." All breakfast ingredients, bread, eggs, cheese, were out and they were ready to make the sandwiches but couldn't because they started cleaning a little early today? That makes no sense, we have been told on numerous occasions that they serve breakfast until 1030 and it takes them approx two mins to make an egg sandwich. Very frustrating. read more
