Reading the other reviews I stopped by for 2 glazed and a coffee during an afternoon. It looked abandoned but I suppose this place caters to the morning rush. I just moved from the east coast where dunkin donuts is standard, but since they aren't here, I haven't had a donut in awhile (I've been buying McDonalds coffee with their apple or cherry pies as a substitute). I really like the feel of the inside...coming from a colonial state one of the weirdest things about socal has been how stale the commercial style is here. This place gave me a hometown American vibe. The donuts were a bit too sweet with glaze that was a bit generous, but the coffee tastes pretty normal and the price was $2.75 for 2 donuts and the medium coffee. The donuts I got are a bit more cake-like than bread-like, but I've only tried one kind of donut here so thats just more of a note than a their style. I have driven by DK Donut's hundreds of times in my life and always referred to it as Dead Kennedy Donuts (what can I say, I'm a punk rocker on the inside). I finally decided to give it a try -thanks to Angela C's review- and now I am kicking myself for not trying it sooner. Grant it, I went early on a Saturday morning and they were busy serving and making donuts so everything was super fresh. The raised glazed donuts were still warm and I have yet to try a warm donut that wasn't heavenly. J was so impressed with DK's offerings that she proclaimed DK Donut's "The Doughnut Plant of Orange County." I think that might be a little bit like calling Saddleback Mountain the Mt. Walk in, do not drive through. I love this place. It is close to my house, delicious inexpensive donuts, and nice staff. The donuts melt in your mouth and you can always find them baking something throughout the day. The drive through is almost always busy in the mornings, however inside there is hardly ever a line. It will take you far less time to hop out of your car and get your stuff and go back then wait in that line. They do not have one person dedicated to drive through, it is whoever is next. So you might as well get out of your car and get served quicker. My favorite is a nice, hot cinnamon roll from here. Yummy! I strongly recommend it. read more

My god I love this donut place. I don't know if it's because my grandpa, who lived with us for a short time, always brought us donuts and coffee from here, but the donuts here are seriously bomb. I don't know about any of the new concoctions, but my go-tos - chocolate twist, maple bar, plain old fashioned - are always fresh and so perfectly fluffy (not the old fashioned, obviously). With a handy-dandy drive-thru (which is usually pretty busy during peak hours), DK Donuts offer a wide selection of donuts, doughnut holes, other pastries, beverages (coffee, milk, etc.) and even sandwiches! The variety of donuts are in abundance and always super tasty. At times, they are still warm fresh from the oven! We've seen them in the middle of the night inside the store getting the product ready for when they open at 3am. And let me tell you, they are extremely busy! But it is worth the wait and people are usually really good about waiting and placing their orders accordingly. They also make breakfast and lunch sandwiches (they close at 2pm), which can be made to order or specialized to your liking. The staff is always friendly, helpful and quick to fulfill your order. If you don't remember what kind of doughnut you're looking for, they're able to usually figure it out and get you on your way. They take credit/debit cards, which is really rare in the doughnut industry. But so welcomed in this cashless society we're in. I gotta go 5 stars for these guys! I am not here all the time and I know they often have a line around the building at the drive thru window on weekend mornings. Thats right, drive thru window. They open early, sometime before 6am and they're really nice! Primarily, I am there 3 times a year for a large garage sale event in West Irvine. When I say large I mean I usually order between 15 and 18 dozen donuts. I almost never call ahead (I'm sure they love me for that!) and they always handle it great! I'm spoiled ... can no longer go to other donut shops because they just don't compare. The maple bacon bar and maple bacon cronuts are amazing ... the freshest turkey sandwich around and I always order it on a bagel which is always fresh, they just have limited selection on bagels, but hey it's a donut shop not a bagel shop ... still, these are the best sandwiches around. These are always the best tasting donuts, high quality ingredients, best flavor ... my only wish is they would make more cronuts, especially the basic cronuts with vanilla glaze, because they almost always run out before I get there as I'm not an early morning person. DKs is good stuff. They open at 3am, which is awesome, as sometimes my work requires me to be up at the crack of dawn. They have tasty donuts, even better croissant sandwiches and also a decent cup of coffee. You can come at lunch for a good cheap deli sandwich as well. They are busy all the time for good reason. Let me tell you what donuts you MUST get. You MUST get the ube(purple yam), blueberry, and ample & bacon. These are the only ones I come and get. Now let me tell you why. This place is unique because they have specialty donuts such as red velvet, ube, and carrot cake donuts. I personally love the ube and couldn't believe how amazing they taste. This is my all time favorite donut and even tops my previous number one ranked donut - blueberry donut. The blueberry donut used to be my all time favorite for a year until I was introduced to DK Donuts and their ube donut. Trust me you don't want to sleep on the ube donut. Next in rank is the blueberry donut. This donut is delicious and you can taste the blueberry added with a dash of sweet from the glaze. This donut is still probably the staple to most people and some may argue that this donut is the only donut you ever need to get. Now the maple & bacon donut comes in third because I like the taste of the maple, but the added bacon on top just makes it so much better. I know it sounds like a weird combination, but give it a try and you'll see how many flavors are bursting inside your mouth. Also their customer service has been spectacular. The young female, Katie, assisted me on a special order. She made me donuts that looked like poke balls and even made me donuts that looked like pickles. I came here for the donuts and they are delightfully delicious but I keep returning for those breakfast bagel sandwiches! The bagels are made in-house and truly are just so delicious. I love that they soft and easy to bite into and just taste wonderful with egg, cheese, and bacon. I sometimes leave a little early for work just so I can grab myself one of these beauties along with a cup of joe and a french cruller. We stopped by on a Wednesday morning, the inside was pretty dead, drive through was pretty busy, and the selection on donuts was getting pretty sparse. Donuts - a twist, chocolate, and sugar was just ok, nothing special. Croissants - the ham and cheese croissant is HUGE! When I first saw it I was amazed by the size of that thing. We also had a ham, cheese, egg, and bacon croissant which was ok. Overall - The ham and cheese croissants are worth coming back for only if I am too lazy to make the drive to Seaside Bakery in Newport. If I had to I would get the donuts. read more

We came here specifically for the ube donut, but there were only two left. We brought those two and a glazed with chocolate frosting filling. The glazed ube was disappointing, not enough of ube taste. The really sweet glazing overwhelmed the mild ube flavoring. They replaced the sprinkles with fruity pebbles. Fruity Pebbles!!! Best thing ever! I get one of those and a bacon maple cronut. So good! I'd also recommend the tuna sandwich on a croissant. Buttery flakey croissant with moist tuna, lots of mayo and crisp lettuce. One of my faves! A lot of people prefer the DK's on chapman, but I like the donuts here a little better. This place has GREAT donuts!! They quite literally melt in your mouth! I don't stop-by here often (though I'd like to) but occasionally when I've been working all night and want a quick snack for the drive home I'll stop-in and they never disappoint!
