The chicken is always good. The service needs work. If I order and you tell me it will be ready for pickup in 15 min and i come 25 minutes later, why isn't my order ready? Had dinner here on a Friday night and it was so busy. The wait wasn't too bad, we were seated in about 5 minutes. There seemed to be only one waitress for the entire dining room but she kept her composure and handled every table professionally. She gave each table the attention we needed and didn't rush us to order. She answered all out questions have her suggestions and was very patient. Overall the food was delicious. So checked out this place cause I wanted something different. Let me just say even thou I picked up my food, the restaurant was pretty nice; nicer than I expected. Now for the food, I was really disappointed because it's your classic chicken and rice and salad type of food and it just wasn't that good. The chicken didn't have brought flavor and they gave you TOO much rice for a quarter chicken. And on top of that the green sauce was a little too liquidy and not even spicy. I love everything there is to love about this place. The waitstaff was nice and attentive. The establishment was very clean and the food was reasonably priced. We ordered the whole chicken, which came out hot and succulent. I requested the fried rice, which was a mix of eggs, carrot, beef and chicken. This was also another excellent dish on the menu. Super pleasant surprise! The place is small and intimate (a tad too crowded for my taste but not unusual for NYC restaurants). I will take the atmosphere here anyday over Pio Pio's loud, boisterous club like ambiance but I'm also in luck because the food is decent, as well. Love to start my meal with canchitas and aji and they were willing to refill our portion. Few things deflate my anticipation like dry, chewy anticuchos but these at Don Alex were a solid 4 stars. Yummy "shakes" with just the right amount of creaminess and fruit. Ceviche was fresh and care was taken when extracting the lime juice as the sauce was not bitter at all! Delicious juicy maduros. The causa was super tasty (came with chicken salad) and it was big enough to serve as the main if you are not starving. The sangria always kicks butt, so far, is the best I've tasted and it has a serious kick, we also hold the record of pitchers consumed between 3 people in one sitting . We have been to many different Peruvian restaurants all over NYC, this is definitely our new favorite plus an added bonus in our neighborhood. The ceviche mixto - the fish tasted fresh, onions were cut very finely and it good amount of spice. It's so amazing, how this, business address is located on border line of Rego Park and Forest Hills but they don't deliver to Forest Hills. They keep changing their policy from one week to another, first they accept credit cards on delivery then they don't; they charge you extra now if you have yellow rice and they also would do grill chicken, steak but NOT pork chops. They went from not charging any surcharges to adding an automatic gratuity without notifying the customers ,at times customers end up paying double the gratuity. I would not recommend this place to anyone, POOR customer service. read more

After waiting almost an hour on a 1/4 of chicken and Entraña a la Parrilla with tostones and avocado, we found that my cousin received a chicken leg and a lot of rice and I received a SMALL piece of meat that didn't look like an Entraña and five pieces of tostones. Immediately I called back and they say they would send the right meat and amount of a meat that cost almost $20, again they send the wrong meat smh at that moment I was so hungry I didn't care and to top it of I was called a liar by them saying they send the right meat and amount. Needles to say that restaurant is OFF my list. So my review is if you want to wait a longggg time for your food, get the wrong order and get very little amount of food by all means order from them. I've been to this restaurant a couple of times only because it's the only latinamerican restaurant close to where I live. After I had lunch today I decided that I'm not coming back. Why?: 1)The beans were hard and the portion was pretty small. Colombian restaurants are definitely more generous with portions and their prices more reasonable. 2) Same story with the rice. It tasted like precooked instant rice. 3) We were given old menus with old prices. The owner/manager should at least correct with pen the menus they have while they get the newly printed ones or have their waiters inform the customers of price changes. 4) The tip is included on the bill. Cool because you don't have to do the math but not cool that you are imposed a tip regardless of the service. 5) You need to spend a minimum to be able to use credit cards.
