I love this place. Super affordable. The chicken is so juicy. I usually get the #1 or #2 -- and it's got a whole spread of chicken rice beans fries with hotdog and a salad. But most importantly that green sauce is amazing! I usually order for takeout and it's ready 15-20 minutes when it's not so busy, maybe 30 mins tops when it is busy. Good Peruvian food in Rego park area. Don Alex is a cozy little restaurant that is making some pretty good Peruvian dishes. Came here for lunch on a weekday and there was no wait. The restaurant seems to do mostly deliveries but no reason not to sit and eat here. We ordered the mix grill for two that came with grilled skirt steak, sausage, shirt ribs, and chicken. The meats were cooked to perfection but they were very heavily seasoned with salt. Other than the salt, the meats were awesome. We also ordered the plantains which were great. Fried enough to have crispy edges and carmalezied coating. The rice and beans were just as we expected. Soft tender rice with flavored beans, can't go wrong with that. When I walked in the girls were nice but one seemed confused where the orders went. It was packed. The place itself is really small. When I got to the office to eat I was disappointed. I an fortunate enough to have experienced Don Alex's food via two branches located not too far from where I live. This made me especially happy to find one not too far from where my mother lived. Chinese food is great, but now and then you want something different! This Don Alex is right near the Rego Park train station on the R line, meaning if you get out at the right exit it's only a few steps away making it a perfect location for grabbing food after work or when visiting. This Don Alex is smaller than the two other ones I know, but they make the most of their space. When you enter it's dimly lit but in a nice way. There are enough seats for at least 25 people if not more. Towards the back is the cashier station and bar. The place is nicely decorated and has a nice, comfortable feel to it. The staff is very welcoming and quick to take your order. Generally when I order a combination with a whole chicken, beans, rice and salad it takes about ten minutes to come out but I'm okay with that because the food is always fresh and the chicken is never dried out. The food at this branch of Don Alex may actually be slightly *better* than the other two that I normally go to. The chicken is moist and very well seasoned while the side dishes (including boiled yucca, rice and salad) all taste great and never seem like they've been sitting around. The yucca is not mushy, it's just right. The rice is perfectly cooked and the salad is crisp. The green sauce included with the chicken is no Pio Pio sauce, but it's still really darn good! Another great thing is that the aforementioned meal is only little over $20, which is a bargain for an outside meal that can feed four people. Good prices, nice location, great food and a pleasant atmosphere make this one of my favorite places in the area. read more

1/31/18 Went in there with every intention to get a to-go plate for myself. Love their chicken and yucca... But left due to a spiffy Server who asked "what EXactly do you want" when I tried to explain that I'd like to order their $10 meal of a half chicken with rice or salad or French fries. I asked if I could replace the sides for Yucca Fries. To which she acted as though it was an incomprehensible statement... to which I repeated myself.. and she said it'd be extra. Sure. How much extra? To that she said again "what Exactly do you want"? If you want to stay in business, please check the way in which your employees speak to your patrons because I am 100% certain I was not being difficult but I was spoken to very poorly. Saddened we didn't ask for the Amarillo rice... aside from that blip, it was all smooth, auspicious sailing. The large salad was bright with avocado, red bell peppers, cucumber and iceberg lettuce with creamy Italian dressing. The yucca was chopped roughly and fried hard, served with spicy yellow sauce that hit the hungry spot on the head. And the chicken, roasted a dark honey brown with perfect salt and fall off the bone tenderness, over white rice with spicy yellow and BBQ sauce put us into an unavoidable, food-induced coma. Delicious, filling and well-priced family meals, it's no surprise why there are 3 locations within a 5 mile radius. Typically they don't have a problem with giving more green sauce as we eat a lot of it. Parking is difficult and restaurant can get busy. Disappointed at the last time I ordered (03/23/21). I know this might sound petty, but they're using cheap seasoned fries now instead of the regular fries. This is no good! I hope they change it back to regular fries soon, or this is the last time my family and I order from here. I'm Peruvian and this is a BIG no no. As a regular patron, I am absolutely appalled by what they deem as acceptable customer service. After receiving a delivery missing white rice, totaling all of $3, I called the restaurant immediately to see if we could have the missing item we paid for delivered. The woman who who picked up the call claimed that we never ordered said rice, then proceeded to call me a liar, all during a ten minute negotiation over a $3 dollar item. Once I let her know I would write my complaint on Yelp while walking to pick up the $3 she owed me, the magical missing rice appeared and is now being delivered to my door. Voila! I Am currently on my couch... Immobile due to the food coma after ending dinner at this place, and it feels sooooo good! Don Alex is slowly becoming one of my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. The sangria is great and a great pour. It's tasty and hits the spot every time. The Peruvian toasted corn they serve on the table to nibble on is complete crack with the green sauce. I asked the server how I can make this and he told me I had to get special corn from Peru first. Love it. The food is awesome too. The chicken is juicy and is cut into four pieces. The combo plate comes with yellow rice (fluffy), bean ( served in a sauce), and I usually request sweet plantains (the bomb diggity), oh and the salad topped with a sliced avocado. All it was eaten with my bare hands and maybe a fork for the sides. This place is also very appealing with its romantic ambiance and wide front windows. Reminds me very much to the original Pio Pio, and some might shoot me for saying this, but they are equally good. Bring a date, as long as u don't mind getting a bit messy with the food. I didn't like that the menu is very playful looking sort of like a take out tex-mex joint. If they changed the menu to crisp white paper with black print, would definitely give the place a boost in class. Can't complain about wholesome good food, clean bathrooms and nice service. This review is mostly based on Don Alex great food taste. I lived around the area for sometime and I can honestly say the chicken is phenomenal, as well as the price. Things they need to improve? The whole idea of putting 18% tip on the bill without asking bugs me. I am not a cheap person but the tip should be earned (by default everyone should leave at least 14% or more) and not feel like it is established. Like other yelper's have voiced out, if you don't look carefully on the bill most likely you will end up tipping double..... Not bad at all! For a restaurant that doesn't specialize in russian food, this place is doing pretty well in this neck of the woods. I went to get take out from here on a Friday night and it had a good number of people there both eating in and picking up take out orders. Even though it looks like a primarily eat in restaurant, I don't think this is a great place for a sit down meal. The ambiance is nice, but it had a cramped feel to it, and with all the people walking in and out to pick up their orders, Id feel a little unsettled eating with all the nearby foot traffic. The employees that worked there were really nice. I got my order in a timely manner, especially given how busy it was. On to the grub, I was pleasantly surprised given the previous reviews. I had a quarter chicken which was very tasty, nicely seasoned, maybe a teensy bit on the drier side, but most chicken by nature either winds up being on the drier side or else undercooked and who wants that? The rice and beans that came along with it were great. I tried some of their breaded chicken entree as well which was thin, light and not too oily. The prices here are perfectly reasonable. For 7.62 you can get a quarter chicken with rice and beans, a good amount of food. Just think this is only 2 bucks more than a value meal at McDs but its exponentially better. No brainer folks. I would totally make this a regular take out place if I lived around here and by the looks of it a lot of other people have caught on to this welcome addition to the rego park scene. I use to come here all the time when I lived two blocks away. It's been a few years since I ate here. The service was usually good and the food just as good. I can't say the same for tonight. Went to eat here and my s/o 's chicken was completely raw, the sweet plantains were over cooked and barely edible. We use to be able to bring in beer and tonight we were denied to do so. The service was terrible. The waiter had no idea what he was doing, very unfriendly, was too busy talking to the woman at the cashwrap. It took him forever just to come take our order. Two guys who walked in 10 minutes after us and ordered after us, the same exact entrees, were served before us. The waiter never came around to refill our water glasses. I sat eating my food with a dry mouth. We did not even get offered any drinks until after our meals came. Even after that the waiter only took my s/o's drink order and didn't even bother to ask me if I wanted anything. He never checked to see if our food was okay or if we needed anything more. We had to flag our waiter down to tell him we were finished. We complained about the food and the waiter said nothing,didn't even acknowledge we were speaking and just cleared everything away. He had an attitude when my s/o refused to pay for his entree (the only thing cooked was his rice). We never received an apology, compensation or a thank you for even trying the place. I'm beyond disappointed in this place and will definitely not be returning. I do not recommend this place to anyone, as the customer service had plummeted to rock bottom along with the food. I am fan of the food, the service? -not so much. The food here is delicious and better than all the other Peruvian places that I have tried. The skirt steak is delicious, so is the Calamari, the seafood cerviche and their chicken is hands down the best and most addictive Peruvian chicken you will even have. Their green hot sauce hits all the right spots, too bad they started charging extra for it. I have dined in and ordered from this place numerous times, the food quality is always consistent and you get what you expect. The staff is not the most warm or helpful but mostly depends on their mood or how the day has been. The ambiance is nice and cozy and its right off of queens boulevard just as you get off the subway station. Great food and great location!! Definitely worth a try. read more
