There was quite a line on a Friday night and I now know why. Food was delicious and presentation was top notch! We ordered quite a bit between the two of us - sopes, chicken tamale, birria tacos, pescado and the farmers market veggie taco and managed to eat it all. The birria taco didn't come with the traditional dipping sauce like we had expected but per my husband, the meat was seasoned well and was flavorful, that was his favorite. Mine was the fried fish taco which tasted so fresh. It came topped with aioli and I was hoping for a few more salsa options on the side which would have paired really well with the tacos. The sopes were quite tiny for the price but worth a try. My only other complaint was the wait time, we waited close to 40 mins for food to arrive and got pretty hungry but also realize they were busy. Will return to try other menu items. read more

Donaji, where have you been all my life? There are lots of good Mexican restaurants in the Mission, but Donaji just hits the spot in a different way. I ordered a lot of things and can say that practically everything was good. The sope (basically a taco on top of fried masa) with the steak, guacamole, and hints of citrus on top of the fried and not too heavy masa was one of the best things I have eaten all year. The chicken tamales were also super flavorful. For seafood dishes, the fish taco was perfectly cooked and the ceviche had the right amount of acid and heat. They also serve beer and sangria so I treated myself to a red and white sangria in these cute cups. The service and overall ambiance of this place is so welcoming. I'm surprised this place has not been packed the last few times I have been here. Guess this might be a hidden gem for now, but hopefully they get the recognition they deserve. read more

Unassuming small restaurant front in the Mission district of SF. We ordered a Jamaica and we're pleased to taste that it was fresh and made from scratch (not overly sweet). The Oaxacan hot chocolate was much sweeter than I'm used to, but still had a pleasant taste. The tamale with chicken tinga and a side of mole negra on top was tasty and hit the spot, though not outstanding. The chicken pozole rojo was good but lacked body. Although my daughter was craving it and she was satisfied. The star was the staff, they were all very helpful and the service was swift. We will have to try them out again and order the tlayuda! Only knock was that service was a bit slow because it was a busy Saturday and they seemed short staffed, so I can't fault them too much for that nowadays. Had the tamal, quesabirria taco, chicken mole enchiladas, and the churro donut. Really liked the tamal and enchiladas. The quesabirria taco was a bit different than other places, and I think I prefer it the other way being crispier. Still good though. Donut was good but I would've preferred a sturdier churro as opposed to a softer one, to make dipping in the chocolate hold up better. Purely my own preferences. There is usually a long line at their booth at the farmers market at Ft Miley, aka the Veterans Hospital. I can see why people lineup for these delicious tamales. The next time I am at this farmers market I will plan on having them for my lunch and bring home some for later in the week. S had two chicken tamales and I had the cheese with chopped hot peppers. I wish I had ordered two. The masa was not dry, a big plus I find that tamales are often to dry or for me to enjoy. When I first saw that the pepper was chopped in mine I was worried that the cheese would be too spicy, it wasn't, the heat spread in the cheese I was much better that than one big bite. S like his chicken, his minor complaint was he expected more filling for $4.00. The tamales are served with pickled onions, cabbage, and salsa. I think the price is reasonable. read more

Update: I returned for my second meal. 5 star service and 5 star food once again. They def have a repeat customer. This time, we made it for a later brunch, before they stopped their brunch menu 2:30/3pm on a Saturday. I had the breakfast tacos, nothing crazy (scrambled eggs layered with refried(?) beans with queso and avocado served with salsa on the side) but very delicious. I tend to prefer simple food for breakfast. We also tried the mole totopos. Basically it's their mole sauce on top of chips with crema, pickled onions, and avocado. YUM. I can't get enough of their mole sauce. The hot chocolate was hella good as well, again, nothing crazy or special but it just tasted right. Idk if it's vegan. Next time, I will try their tamales and the churro donut! Also, mom is back to work already! Please support them so maybe mom can spend more time with baby?? hopefully lol read more

A Oaxacan joint, has the best mole I've had in CA. Not to sweet and balanced heat. Also the fresh tortillas are incredible, and apparently their tamales and quesobirria are off the charts. We had the tlayuda with chorizo and it was 5/5. Tortilla was crispy and meat was cooked perfectly. The cheese was so melty too. Very filling too. Pork tamale was 4/5. The maza was very moist and flavorful and pork tasted great but was a tad dry. Overall good though. Maza pancakes with plátanos were 5/5, very well cooked and plátanos were delicious. Also the dried chili oil salsa was amazing. I ended up buying a jar because I spooned so much onto my Tlayuda. It does have peanuts though. Overall a great place and worth trying. We started with the sopes, which could have been warmer but were pretty good. Standout dishes were the chicken mole enchiladas and the fish and chicken tacos. The mole sauce was rich and excellently balanced. The tacos had a great combination of flavors. We ended with the churro donut, which came out piping hot with a thick chocolate sauce. Decided to try this for the first time last night. We were walking with friends and they had an outdoor area which was not so welcoming but did have heaters. Ended up sitting inside. It's counter ordering with a sit down pricing. I made the mistake of ordering a prefix meal which was a single ceviche tostada, four slices of chicken breast in a decent Mole sauce/side of rice and a doughnut/hot cocoa. It was $45. On their menu is a full-size ceviche appetizer which was ordered for the table for around $15, they had an enchilada Molé dish for about 15. Those were a normal proportion in comparison to the items on the prefix menu for double the price. It was just so weird, I kind of felt taken advantage of. read more

The arugula jicama salad was a good complement to the rich mole with its bright hibiscus dressing. A great addition to the Mission and I'll return to try their tamales next time! read more

The host of the restaurant was rude. Would not give us a wait time when we asked to be seated for a table of 2, there were 4 tables open, the host said they were all reserved (the website says nothing about taking reservations, or an online wait list), put my name on the list, and he laughed and said good luck, not going to happen. We never got a callback, (again visibly empty tables) even though there were no other names on the wait list. Not sure if the host was just homophobic as it was my partner and I that were going to be dining, or if they just didn't want our business on a Thursday night. If you try to dine here, hope you are treated with some respect, as we received nothing but hate and disrespect as a couple just looking for some good oaxacan food on a Thursday night. read more
