Don't waste your time. The worst staff ever. Waited 40 minutes for a food and had to go track someone down and ask them where it was and it had just been sitting out for more than 20 minutes and was cold and the staff ignored us when we tried to get their attention. As a frequent goer of Doomie's next door, I have to admit I like NextMex a bit better. The reasons why? They are far more consistent than Doomie's and WAY more affordable. This is the case of 'less is better,' and it shows. With a more concise menu that the ten plus burgers, sandwiches, and done-up fries next door, NextMex seems to add all the necessary love to their vegan Mexican creations; it tastes like authentic Mexican food. What I've had. The Wet Burrito: You Can order this with 'carnitas, 'chicken,' or 'asada,' , wet or regular style; I went with the carnitas and wet because I like salsa (as spicy as I go with anything,). The burrito also has refried beans, rice, veggies, lettuce, and comes wrapped in a flour tortilla. Verdict: awesome. From the frighteningly tasting to actual pork 'carnitas,' to the fillings (good retried beans,), and the topping sauces; this burrito is 'muy bueno!', as my non-Spanish speaking friend said to his burrito. I also tried "The Quesadilla" from another friend's order. It was as authentic in vegan quesadilla imitating real dairy' as it gets. Feed it to a non-vegan, cheese connoisseur and is guarantee they won't tell the difference. I probably like this dish better than the burrito, but both are delicious in their own quality. Only reason why this is a four-star review and not five is because I love guacamole; NextMex has none. But I am sure once they're more grounded, it will come about. All in all, I recommend to all lovers of Doomie's, affordable vegan grub, and Mexican food at that. NextMex does it right. read more

Let me start off by saying I love this place! I love the festive vibe, I love the large food portions, I love how you order off of an iPad, I love the food! I've eaten pretty much everything on this menu: flautas, tacos, chimichangas, burritos, chile relleno... everything is tasty and portions are huge, but why is my good always cold when I get it? Well, not always, but most of the time the food is not piping hot (the way I prefer it), but it is rather lukewarm- cold. It's weird! I came with a friend it was her first time. We walked in and it was freezing so we quickly ordered and sat outside in front. At the time the order was placed the only person in the restaurant was the cook. After about 10 minutes go by , my friend walks in to confirm the accuracy of text message notifications. I popped in the small joint in a two story corner outdoor shopping mall at the corner of Vine and Fountain Avenue. The interior is very colorful and festive as I approach the computer monitor to place my order. That is my first complaint. As someone who has gluten intolerance, I sometimes have to ask a lot of questions since I need to know every ingredient of everything I eat be free of gluten. So, I had to wait until someone came out of the kitchen. I will jump to the food I ordered, a carnitas taco and a Tamarindo soda. The taco was very tasty and I love the sweet and tart taste of Tamarind. So why the Three stars. Besides the necessity of using the monitor to order your food and pay which requires the menu ordering to be very precise and clear, which doesn't work for me, the three stars is because the Carnitas taco was the only taco I could order. This is the first Mexican restaurant I have ever eaten in where my choices were so limited. When I was diagnosed 21 years ago with celiac, my one go to type of food was Mexican food. At this joint, they apparently put flour or other gluten in all of their meats except carnitas. So on that basis, coupled with the fact that it's next door sister restaurant Doomie's used to serve a number of GF dishes that they have ALL eliminated, this restaurant's doors are closed for me. read more

Wow I really wanted to like this place. But it's a classic example of how to do vegan food wrong. It's not a place that tried to mimic the original taste of the non-vegan (and while there is nothing wrong with that) did nothing but make it worse. The biggest issue was it seem to decide that being vegan was most important than being a quality good food. I'm sure people born and raised in LA would disagree with me. Let's me preface by saying I absolutely LOVE nextmex and I'm so happy to have another awesome vegan place nearby. This review is solely based on my experience tonight. Everything was as normal until it came to receiving our food. On the same ticket, my partner ordered a burrito, and I had ordered a quesadilla. My name was called for the order, but it was only my partners portion of the meal that was completed. Not a huge deal, I'm very familiar with the restaurant industry and realize some items take longer than others. However, the gap between our two meals was 15 minutes. When I asked the guy at the front how my quesadilla was doing and he asked the kitchen, he didn't necessarily get a rude reply, but the woman in the kitchen with red hair and glasses just said "it's still cooking". No apology, no empathy, no ownership, no ETA, just "it's cooking". I don't mind waiting for good food, but at least try to time it better so we can get our meal at approximately the same time. By the time I got my food, my partners food was already cold and not as enjoyable. Maybe better communication between the front and kitchen, or even with me as a guest. The situation could have easily been made better if I didn't have to ask the status on the food and there was some kind of ownership or being a bit proactive. read more

After moving from Houston I miss Tex Mex food often. And vegan Mexican food can be hard to find. I love a lot about this place. 1- it's open late 2- there is parking 3- there is a sister restaurant next door if you want options - but not sure why you'd want that 4- the decor is super cute 5- the FOOD. So I went with a couple of people and we ordered the taquitos, flautas, with rice and beans and the nachos. The food was awesome. We couldn't decide as a group if we liked the tacos or taquitos more. Just delicious. I don't like avocado (yeah, let's move on) but the people with me love it, and they were bummed at the lack of avocado on the menu. You can't even get guac which seems like a big miss on this menu. I'm not a fan of the ordering system. You are supposed to order at the counter, on tablets but the dishes are not super well described so it seems everyone ends up asking the person on the counter, which created a bottleneck. I personally would prefer a full service restaurant experience but I'm happy they are making awesome food. Can't wait to go back. Delicious. Try it out. Even if you love meat you will love it. Not a whole lot of vegetarian, much less vegan, Mexican eateries that I have found. Doomies provides a really good option for Vegetarian (nee Vegan) Mexican cravings. I had the carne asada burrito and really enjoyed it. Wife had tostada & taquito combo; since the combos come with a side salad, beans, and rice (a fact somewhat hidden on the menu) she would get something other than the tostada next time. But what she had was good. My only comment is the salsas are on the sweet (vs. spicy) side; they do have whole jalapenos available. I'll be getting one and cutting it up to add to the salsa in the future. Since this is personal taste, and they do provide the means to address my tastes, can't really complain. They don't open for lunch til noon, and there is a modest sized parking lot (a big deal in Hollywood). We went here tonight on a recommendation from a friend. I'm very upset. They have you order on your own at the computer. I clearly checked off "no onions and no cilantro" on the dishes (that allowed me to do that. All had the job cilantro option. Of the three options we ordered 2 did not let me check off no onions, so I specifically sought out the man at the counter and said, we cannot have raw onions on our meals and I could not check that off on the taquitos and chili verde plate. He said "that's because those do not come with onions". I asked- are you sure it's not in a salsa or anything on top? He assured me it was not. We take our food home and about a block from our home- 15 minutes from the restaurant- we smell onions in the car. We get home and sure enough, those jerks, put it all over the dishes. And Everything was covered in cilantro as well. What is the point of asking if we don't want something, if you're not going to follow the order? But this seemed to be intentional as we were like the only order they were working on and I had a specific conversation with them about this. On top of this- they charged me for their spicy salsa but did not include it. Now to the food- after we scrapped off the onions of the food we could, it was whatever. We had to toss the chili verde plate as they literally mixed the raw onions into the top. The burrito was all beans. The chips were decent. The taquitos did have a chicken taste of the ones I could eat. The sauce on top soaked up most of the disgusting raw onions. read more

What a disappointment. Paid $16 for an asada burrito with guacamole. There was hardly any asada and just a small dab of some green creamy substance, assuming that was the guac. Also requested no lettuce and no tomato, that request was ignored. When I cut into it, it was basically a pile of bland salty mush.
