I wrote this on April 22nd and forgot to post it :') I randomly stopped in this place while walking on grand street and don't know how I've never come across it before. I got the roast pork bun (a little after 7pm so not sure if yelp hours are right) and at first thought $2.50 was a little expensive compared to other places, but I've been trying to find my favorite pork bun place. I brought it home so I could heat it up and then realized that this is a pretty large bun so the $2.50 price seems very reasonable. Also!! I think this is my favorite roast pork bun place now : ) the meat is flavorful and tastes more fresh than other places. The bread is also buttery mmm I find the filling in most other places to be too sweet (or almost candied if that makes sense). This one feels more savory and like a proper light meal. My favorite item at Double Crispy Bakery is the kaya bun. With a sweet, crumbly, perfectly textured shell on top and sweet--but not too sweet--creamy filling inside, the kaya bun is oh-so satisfying and worth the $1.75 (25 cents more than the very good version at Tao Hong Bakery, whose kaya bun is excellent but whose exterior bread is just slightly inferior). However, the cheese twist ($2.25) was extremely disappointing. The bread was slightly sweet, but overall there was not enough cheese and meat. Overall, it was bland. I walked away feeling like I had just consumed a lot of carbs, my stomach full but my taste buds craving something more. I'll stick with the sweet buns in the future. The prices at Double Crispy are generally on par or slightly more than other Chinatown bakeries. It does offer a larger selection of breads and pastries and has a larger, more well-lit, and more welcoming interior than many of their hole-in-the-wall counterparts. read more

I went by this bakery and decided to go in. Tried a regular egg tart and a bee nest cake. The egg tart was cold and was just okay...not that tasty. I would go elsewhere for egg tart. The bee nest cake had a chewier layer full of holes like a bee hive and a cake part beneath it that was soft and bouncy. It was okay, not too sweet. The egg tarts look a lil smaller but there's more egg filling so it kinda evens out. I prefer more custard than pastry. Big plus, they're a lot cheaper than the ones in Queens so I also bought a loaf of bread and a lil bag of cute mini cakes for my mom. My parents eat them for breakfast or with coffee. It hits for spot if you're craving egg tarts. These egg tarts taste almost exactly like the one from Tao Hong Bakery a block away so I don't think you can go wrong with either bakery. Coconut bun was 5/10. It was dry and a little bland. The moon cakes were 6/10. The filling texture was more sticky and chewy -- different from what I'm used to. I liked that they were not too sweet and greasy. Points off for my lotus moon cake because it tasted like durian. We grabbed a dozen of the Portuguese egg tarts (Po Tats), known to be their specialty. Word on the street is they're some of the best in Chinatown. Also got some wife cakes (pastries filled with candied melon, sweetened nuts and other goodies), and hot dog scallion bun. The egg tarts were perfectly flakey, custard was smooth and creamy.
