This is a classic Chinese pastry shop. Except it looks very clean, spacious, and organized. I recommend their Portuguese egg custards here.. so delicious! Amazing amazing Cantonese pastries. Beware it's cash only but the egg tarts that they're so famous for are literally only $2 so just...bring some cash and get a bunch! Service is prompt and fast, and there's a small space to eat your freshly baked tarts. Highly recommend coming here - it's right off the Grand St. subway stop so you can bring a bunch of goodies home after easily! read more

My favorite item at Double Crispy Bakery is the kaya bun. With a sweet, crumbly, perfectly textured shell on top and sweet--but not too sweet--creamy filling inside, the kaya bun is oh-so satisfying and worth the $1.75 (25 cents more than the very good version at Tao Hong Bakery, whose kaya bun is excellent but whose exterior bread is just slightly inferior). However, the cheese twist ($2.25) was extremely disappointing. The bread was slightly sweet, but overall there was not enough cheese and meat. Overall, it was bland. I walked away feeling like I had just consumed a lot of carbs, my stomach full but my taste buds craving something more. I'll stick with the sweet buns in the future. The prices at Double Crispy are generally on par or slightly more than other Chinatown bakeries. It does offer a larger selection of breads and pastries and has a larger, more well-lit, and more welcoming interior than many of their hole-in-the-wall counterparts. read more

I went by this bakery and decided to go in. Tried a regular egg tart and a bee nest cake. The egg tart was cold and was just okay...not that tasty. I would go elsewhere for egg tart. The bee nest cake had a chewier layer full of holes like a bee hive and a cake part beneath it that was soft and bouncy. It was okay, not too sweet. There are some long aluminum tables and stools for seating inside. Of the myriad of Chinatown bakeries, I don't think I would come back. Cash Only. read more

Casual Chinese bakery that seems popular with the locals. I came in on a Monday afternoon and the seatings were packed with Asian uncles and aunties chatting with eating other. This place is known for their egg tarts so I got some to try. The egg tart tastes good, the price has increased to $2 each and size is a bit small but they definitely don't skimp on the egg filling. Not to be confused with dirty laundry that's been in your gym bag for 3 weeks (Double Crinkly), twin animals scuttling across a country road at night (Double Crittery), or my jokes lately (Double Cringey). This is an insanely popular and busy and adorable bakery in Chinatown Manhattan, right in the busiest part of the area and usually packed wall to wall and counter to door. Double Crispy is underheralded and underrated, a local gem popular with those who love traditional authentic Asian bakeries, and one which has a bunch of great stuff and made me detour from my pre-ordained plan to come here and sample the wares... and the wheres too. I got 4 Portuguese $1.75 each and 4 reg egg tarts $1.50 each. I mostly bring Chinese pastries to my parents but this time L wanted some for ourselves since they were so highly rated. I completely agree.. I think the Portuguese ones here are one of the best egg tarts I've had and prob better than the one in Flushing. Nice, flaky crust, egg is really creamy, perfect amount of sweetness. The reg egg tart is good too but just a lil dryer, not as sweet.. Eat the reg first, then the Portuguese... The egg tarts look a lil smaller but there's more egg filling so it kinda evens out. I prefer more custard than pastry. Big plus, they're a lot cheaper than the ones in Queens so I also bought a loaf of bread and a lil bag of cute mini cakes for my mom. My parents eat them for breakfast or with coffee. I got half a dozen of the egg tarts and I think they were particularly delicious when you heat them up a little. I also like how you can get a box for the egg tarts if you are looking to get some as a gift. This is definitely a stable place to grab some Portuguese egg tarts! read more

A nice place to come get some cheap buns, pastries, cake, or bread. Definitely more of a grab and go kind of place, though theres seating available inside. Service is no-nonsense in a pleasant, efficient sort of way. Almost everything here is around $2-$8, which is very nice for the city. My friend and I tried their egg tarts, pineapple buns and steamed buns. Though this place wouldn't be a priority on my list of places to come back to, everything was pretty good. I was especially happy with the steamed buns since I'd been craving them that day! read more

Usual local asian bakery and sandwiches. They do have bubble tea and different teas. Heads-up cash only at the moment. It's hard to get seated. To-go place near the park. I tried the egg tart (not Portuguese), coconut bun, pineapple moon cake, lotus moon cake, and winter melon moon cake. The egg tart was 7.5/10 and good for the price! It hits for spot if you're craving egg tarts. These egg tarts taste almost exactly like the one from Tao Hong Bakery a block away so I don't think you can go wrong with either bakery. Coconut bun was 5/10. It was dry and a little bland. The moon cakes were 6/10. The filling texture was more sticky and chewy -- different from what I'm used to. I liked that they were not too sweet and greasy. Points off for my lotus moon cake because it tasted like durian. They do sell durian moon cakes so I'm pretty sure my lotus moon cake got mixed with the durian filling. It was sadly disgusting. read more

After being left with a bad taste in our mouths from another bakery in town, we decided to stop by this bakery for egg tarts. We chose it because the decals on the front window were close ups of egg tarts. It was a sign from above, figuratively. These egg tarts did not disappoint. While we did not order anything at Double Crispy Bakery, the food looked incredible. It is difficult to find mooncakes, and this place had so many different flavors for sale. Also, the homemade breads looked incredible. I will need to make another stop here in the future and actually buy something. We definitely missed out on some good food. read more

Popular Asian bakery centrally located in Chinatown, at the busy intersection of Grand/Bowery. We came by earlier in the year, when all the food items were on tables around the perimeter of the shop. Rows and rows of baked goods still being offered. The place was bustling with locals and tourists, so it's a prime spot. We grabbed a dozen of the Portuguese egg tarts (Po Tats), known to be their specialty. Word on the street is they're some of the best in Chinatown. Also got some wife cakes (pastries filled with candied melon, sweetened nuts and other goodies), and hot dog scallion bun. The egg tarts were perfectly flakey, custard was smooth and creamy. Very good Po Tat, though not more distinguishing in taste than many other NYC bakeries. Classic milk buns and pastries we tried were all good, making it a good carb stop in Chinatown. read more

The Portuguese egg tarts are very good, it's $1.6 each, and highly recommend the pork bun also $1.6 each, the bun is big and filled with BBQ pork. Recommend to eat it warm, you could warm up in the oven to bake again. Service on the other hand is very bad, the lady threw my Egg tarts in the bag and I saw that she crashed one of them, so I kindly asked her if there's a box, since I bought 6 of them: she argued and unwilling to give me to box. And I asked for plastic bag and was also very bad attitude giving me one. read more

Do not leave this place without getting the macau egg tarts ($2). I've had a lot of egg tarts in my life, and these were easily the top of my list. Flaky crust without being a crumbly mess, rich and creamy egg custard without being overbearing, and reasonable price for the size. Pastries aside, the bakery was bright, clean, and spacious, with picnic-style tables that you could eat at. I highly recommend you visit this place! read more

Personally, I would have preferred more of the tiramisu flavor without the full tiramisu texture mixed into the drink. That said, it was an interesting concept and I'm glad I tried it. I'd definitely be open to coming back and trying another latte on a future visit.

I've worked in restaurants and bars long enough to understand that staff drinking happens, but this was on another level entirely. I came in with a group of friends and one of the bartenders, Will, was so visibly drunk that it made the entire experience uncomfortable. Slurred speech, wobbling behind the bar, taking orders while chewing food with his mouth open -- it was honestly embarrassing to watch. He looked like he absolutely did not want to be there. At one point, my group had been trying to get his attention for another round for quite a while while he stood around talking with coworkers. We then watched staff take a shot together, and when he finally came over he burped mid-conversation and literally had whatever he had just been drinking dribbling down his neckbeard. That was the moment where the whole thing went from unprofessional to just gross. What made it worse was that it didn't seem isolated to one employee. Throughout the night we watched staff openly taking shots and drinking behind the bar like it was a house party instead of a business. There's a difference between bar culture and complete lack of professionalism, and this crossed that line hard. One of the friends I was with actually frequents the DUMBO location and said that the last time she was there, the same bartender also seemed intoxicated, which makes this feel less like a bad night and more like an ongoing issue. The DUMBO location itself is in an amazing spot, which makes it even more disappointing. But ownership seriously needs to get control of what's going on there before someone gets hurt or the place develops a reputation for having drunk staff on the clock. Unfortunately, the experience was uncomfortable enough that my girlfriends and I won't be coming back. I genuinely hope the employee mentioned gets help if this is a regular thing, because nobody should be working service in that condition.
