This place used to be South Ocean Seafood! To sum it up, we had a very amazing dining experience here. Visited 2x in week. Once for dimsum, and the next for dinner. On both occasions, the place delivered beyond expectations. For am dimsum, they are having a morning special from 9-11am. Small, medium, and large sized dimsum only $6.88. Cant go wrong with that! Cheapest offer in richmond, and possibly the whole of vancouver. Each dish was amazing and delicately made. Fresh and excellent. Specialy mention to the truffle siu mai. So good. The saltiness of the truffles complimented the shrimps so well. Another honouralr mention is the baked bbq pork buns. The pastry had a hint of pineapple ( same as bolo pao) and the filling was hot and packed full of roasted pork. The har gow was equally amazing. Thin skin enveloped the succulent shrimps in side. I loved every dish. Service was outstanding as well. Servers were attentive and easy to call. Food came quick and hot and no upselling at all. For dinner, we trued the dinner special. peking duck 2 way plus 3 dishes. Again, all the dishes except for the beer brisket with tendon and daikon, all were exceptional. The duck was present roasted perfectly to the table. Carved table-side for the meat abd flour crepe entree. Perfect balance between meat and skin. Skin was crispy and had crunch to it. The fish in pot was another winner. The fish chunks were huge and meaty. No skimping or cheating by adding mushrooms. The sweet and sour pork was also so delightful. The sauce was had the right amount of sweetness and tartness. The pork was deep fried perfectly and had just enough coating to give it some crunch. Combined with the sauce. It was a masterpiece. The beef brisket was average. It just lacked more essence and flavour. Tasted a bit bland by chinese standards. My guess is, the beef and sauce were cooked seprately or nit simmered long enough for the beef to absorb all the flavour of the spices. They also had a lobster special. 2 lobsters on too of noodles for leas than $50. Amazing deal!! Just ask the manager for it to see if its available. You wont regret it. Lobster was chunky and meaty. Sauce was thick and packed with flavour. Definitely a winner!! Again, service spot on. Manager very nice by mentioning the lobster offer. I already made another reservation to go back. Cheers! Dragon Group Seafood Restaurant is located on the busy corner of Alderbridge and Garden City Road in Richmond - and I've got to say, they have a really confounding parking lot - I kept driving around trying how to find how to get into the parking lot before figuring out I had to enter from the backside (that's why she said). When we finally managed to get into the restaurant, I didn't start off with high hopes because the place seemed small and the tablecloths seemed to have seen better days. Thankfully, the food actually turned out better than I expected. The Steamed BBQ Pork Buns ($6.98) weren't very saucy on the inside but the bbq pork filling was nice and tender (with some fatty bits too). The Stuffed Eggplant came out nicely with a light and crisp exterior but with the eggplant turning out nice and tender. We also ordered the Rice Rolls with Crispy Bean Curd and Fish Paste ($7.88). Is it me or am I seeing this dish pop up in more places now? This turned out really good with tender fish paste and a very subtle crisp to the bean curd sheet. The Beef Balls with Tangerine Peel ($6.88) turned out pretty good too. We originally wanted to order their country style vermicelli but they said that they were having a special on crab for the same price so we did that instead. Let me tell you, this Crab with Country Style Vermicelli ($19.88) is a pretty good price. Sure, the crab is on the smaller side but this dish was very flavourful and the crab was super fresh. I could literally suck the meat out of the shells without using a cracker. Speaking of which, they didn't give us a crab cracker (or wet napkins). We went with the ginger and green onion sauce and it was perfection. And bonus that the innards under the shell were good as well. We finished off our dim sum with the Truffle Siu Mai ($7.88) which turned out nicely as well with relatively large and plump dumplings. Came here with my family when we were up in the BC area. It's my first time here so I was looking forward to seeing how their dimsum was. FOOD: We ordered a good amount of dishes which included the classics like siu mai, baked bbq bun, hai gao etc. I thought that the classic dim sum dishes were pretty good! Pretty generic and well made. My mom wanted to try the abalone porl shiu-mai so that was a twist on a classic dish. It was also pretty good. I did think that the chicken feet was a bit lackluster? There wasn't a lot to eat and it felt stringy to me. ENVIRONMENT: Clean place and loud as it should be in a dim sum place on a Sunday. I do believe that Richmond has some of the best dimsum places, and I'm happy that I can add this to my list of go to dim sum places for it's reasonable prices and pretty good quality dimsum! read more

I came here for my dad's birthday dinner last night and was blown away by the hospitality and service we received. We came in for dinner and were seated at a large table towards the back. For a Wednesday night, it wasn't busy at all. Right from the beginning Steven and Pamela took care of us. There were 7 of us dining and between all of us we got the lobster in cream sauce, fried shrimp (my fave!), Peking duck (close second fave!), and the mixed vegetable lettuce wraps. Yes, it was a lot of food. Yes, we left with plenty of leftovers. Yes, I had a pretty great lunch today kudos to yesterday's dinner. I've been to this restaurant before when it was under different management, and thankfully the only thing that has changed in the last few years is the restaurant name. Other than that, the food quality and service is the same. The lobster in cream sauce is the way to go. It's a little bit expensive (lobster is by weight, more expensive by the season), but hey, you're eating lobster), but it's a must try here. The fried squid is also some of the best I've tried at a Chinese restaurant - the spice is perfect. The peking duck is also a fan favorite, served on top of fried shrimp chips, with rice based crepe type wrap and hoisin sauce. Turn that into a mini wrap, and you're in foodie heaven. Throughout the night, Steven served us along with the assistance of Pamela, and both of them were superstars. At all times, Steven had a smile on his face and even sang happy birthday more enthusiastically than all of us. I was very impressed. Haven't been to this dimsum place for a long time! Just ordered some basic dishes of course. One special thing I noticed was that there were some dishes that combined three dishes into one like a BBq pork, chicken and egg yolk bun in one. This is great for one or two people eating together. There was a lot of pieces of meat in the rice rolls, but the rice rolls itself was a bit soft/soggy. The egg custard tarts were very fresh. This place used to be the one of the most lit dim sum joints in Richmond, with lines out the door every weekend. However they seem to be under new ownership or something, and it seems like everything has changed, especially their prices! Me and my family decided to come back here for dim sum, and the first thing we noticed was that the restaurant was not packed like it once was - not a good sign. Once we saw the menu, we could kinda guess why it dropped off in popularity, as the prices have increased quite a bit. However, the quality has improved a bit, with everything tasting really nice and fresh. My favourites were definitely the shiu-mai with truffle, as it had a really unique and delicious flavour. The egg tarts were also great, fresh out the oven and super silky. Everything else was fine, not really amazing or anything. If your looking for good quality dim sum I would recommend this place, but I'm sure there are other places with better value for price elsewhere. read more

Family was in Richmond visiting the temple, so we thought to have lunch in the area before leaving! Saw this new place have their "Grand Opening" sign up, so we decided to give it a try, it used to be the location of South Ocean. There wasn't a long wait in line for tables although it looked crowded, we were seated after about 15 minutes of waiting. The inside is quite nicely furnished now, but still the same small space. There is a $1/person charge, and the tea quality justifies this surcharge, it was very nice tea-- fragrant and light. I was looking through the menu while we waited, so we could place the order right as we sat down (hungry peeps). First to arrive was the Halibut with Scallions and Ginger in Premium Soy Sauce ($8.25). The halibut was cooked perfectly, juicy and flakey inside with a crispy exterior that was evenly coated with the soy sauce. Not overly seasoned, I quite enjoyed the piping hot fish. Wish there were more pieces considering the price we paid. Rice Roll Wrapped with Donut ($5.25) was an utter disappointment. The rice roll itself was mediocre, chewy but not quite "smooth". The Chinese donut was hard as a rock and over-fried. Normally it should be crispy on the outside with a bread-like interior. At least they put the soy sauce on the side. I saw the Beef Ball, Spare rib, Chicken Feet combo ($4.75) and was sold immediately. Sadly, this wasn't quite up to standard. The chicken foot was nice, and the beef ball was a good size and average texture/taste. The spareribs were actually seasoned nicely but more than half of it was tiny bits of meat with chunks of fat. There was ONE piece with bone in it (I like the ones with bone). So basically this was one super oily dish. Deep Fried Sesame Ball with Seasame paste ($4.75) wasn't freshly made to order, but was still relatively warm. Crispy outside but the dough inside wasn't chewy enough. The sesame paste was too gritty and sweet that it didn't flow nicely. I ordered Beef Omasum in Tom Yum Sauce ($5.50). It was like any other omasum dish, but I like their concept of putting in Tom Yum. I'd say it's a rather personal taste, since I enjoyed this dish, but my mom said it was weird. Didn't settle for regular shrimp dumplings, so we got Meat Rissoles with Crab ($5.75). Probably the most disappointing dish of the whole meal, possibly my whole dim sum eating life. The wrapping was soft and soggy, fell apart when touched, not chewy at all. The filling did indeed contain real crab, but it also did not hold and so... the dish just all fell apart before it reached any bowl. Similar to any good sushi, your dumpling is not meant to break apart before it reaches your bowl, the wrapping should be strong enough to hold it, yet still be soft, smooth, and chewy. Another combo dish, Steamed Tri-Buns ($4.75) should contain a custard bun, a BBQ pork bun, and a chicken bun. I say "should" because I got double of the BBQ pork bun *sadface* I asked a waiter to confirm I wasn't being stupid and not able to differentiate the two remaining buns (custard is round and easily distinguishable from the other two). These were good, the custard bun had flowy filling, as advertised and tasted pretty legit. The buns themselves were good texture and taste. I just wish I had a taste of that chicken bun now. Something with a fusion twist to it, since I don't think truffle is commonly in Chinese dishes, the Pork Shiu-Mai with Truffle ($5.50) arrived. These looked normal, with some truffle sauce on top. I did not like the taste of the truffle, it was slimey and tasted like concentrated Chinese mushrooms. The shiu mai itself was made with ground pork and had good bite to it. Average size. Lamb isn't commonly in dim sum, and I'm a sucker for lamb so...Pan Fried Lamb Pastry with Leeks ($6.25) was ordered. These buns were not worthy of the price we paid. Pan fried to a golden exterior with the bun being soft and moist, and the filling being all lamb, I liked the flavors. However, there were only three small buns. THREE. Still hungry, we ordered a Wonton Noodle Soup ($7.80/bowl) expecting the usual wontons, but were surprised when they showed up more like pork and chive dumplings with no shrimp. The meat wasn't very fresh inside the dumplings, the wrapping was chewy and smooth though. Noodles weren't anything special, but I like the added touch of greens. I got the Pan Fried Tofu with Shrimp Paste ($5.25), the tofu was a big chunk with shrimp paste on top. Nicely fried, it was crispy and I like how they placed the sauce on the side. Shrimp paste met average standards. When I saw our bill was $124.74 I freaked a little. Then I looked to see that they had charged us 55 people's worth of tea-- no wonder! Luckily I caught it, and they changed it. But still, paying more than $10/person for dim sum is a rarity for my family, so this was a surprise. My parents are big into Dimsum, and I've probably gone to almost all the 3.5 up dimsum places and I've just been mostly disappointed except for 2 restaurants. The first is Yue by Alexander, but it's not an everyday place because of its price, but then this place is probably the best dimsum for its price! We went there because someone online said this restaurant provides big portion and authentic Cantonese food. Food was OK, not that impressive. The beef amount was quite disappointing in a big dish. Liked the clean table cloth and utensils. The taller one of the waiters was quite rude. He arrived late (we got there at 5pm right after they opened for dinner) and began to talk to us while putting on his uniform. No smile or courtesy at all. He pulled a chair from the table close to ours and started to write down our order on the table. He didn't put the chair back and it was later put back by another waiter. You could hear the taller guy clearly yelling loudly to his co-worker in the back and complained about him. The co-worker was actually quite nice to all customers and unfortunately might be his apprentice. When the third waiter brought me the credit card machine for me to pay, I believe I heard him reminding me to pay for tips on the machine. Unbelievable! read more

Horrible service. Would give -5 stars if I could. We arrived at 7 with reservation for the Peking duck set meal. At 7:45 we had nothing. I asked management what was up... They ignored us and said soon. By 7:50 I told them it's been 50 mins and all they said was there was 4 orders of duck ahead of us. Great... But could you not warn us 45mins ahead of time so we didn't just seat here. When mentioning that we would be leaving. They quickly produced a duck and started carving it saying that we couldn't leave now. Surprise we left. They kept on insisting the food was already there. No where was an apology, just telling us to wait. Sorry but that's not the customer service anyone deserves. We even offered to pay for the noodles that we order that had arrived so we could leave. The manager didn't let us. So we left without touching any of the food. Not paying for shit service. Rather stay at home. read more

Polite and good service paired with unnecessarily beautiful decor. Food was decent but the prices for dim sum are the most expensive I've seen in a long time. Dragon Group Seafood is where Garden City Seafood was. 5 dishes (shared between two ppl) used to cost a little under $20. The same dishes come to $45 now, and the flavours aren't quite as good. The extra money is justified by very fancy decor, ornate table wear and table cloths, cool staff uniforms and full colour printed ordering sheets - none of which are important to me. The locality is being 'gentrified', though, so I expect these upgrades may mean something to the newcomers to the area. Personally I really liked the shabby, rude-until-they-get-to-know-you with super tasty food vibe that Garden City had, but such is the price of progress. Oh, and #1 item at the top of the ordering sheet includes sharks-fin. I'll accept that my opinion is perhaps not valid with true Asian cuisine aficionados, but what I do know of sharks-fin anything is that harvesting it is barbaric and wasteful (if you're going to kill a thing, use as close to the whole thing as you can in my opinion). Even though we didn't check the bill directly, one day later that we organized, the 2 orders of Shrimp dumplings ($5.50 each), they charged and changed to be Lobster dumplings($9.80 each), we went there talk to them, and phone once politely, the cashier and waiter both refused us a chance to speak to manager, What's wrong with their service? The money is not the big issue, But, I don't think they know how to treat custom with the fair right! read more

Went to the old South Ocean once and it was cheap but dirty in my opinion but now this place has a better environment.
