Fast friendly service with a large indoor seating area. Food comes quick and hot. Food is reasonably priced for Cambridge. Best dish by far were the Cold Northern Noodles in Chili Oil (A9). This dish is one of my favorite noodle dishes and I liked their take on it: lots of veggies, could have used a little more noodle, plenty of delicious spicy sweet salty peanutty sauce. We also had A10 the red oil chili wontons: sauce was great (not quite as good as A9 IMO) but the wontons were just ok- wrappers too thick. The pan fried dumplings came out hot and fresh- no wings but decently crispy. Filling could have been juicer. The soup dumplings were disappointing: skin was way thick, the dumplings themselves had spread out and stuck to the bottom so they tore when we took them out, overall flavor was lacking. The sizzling beef was a good portion with tender beef and well cooked still crispy onion, but not sizzling at all (the metal plate it came on was actually cold!) and no wok hei flavor which was disappointing. Street parking was easy to find. Will be back to try more dishes and eat more liangpi. Hopefully will find more hits than misses. read more

Stopped by for a weekday lunch with one of my friends; we ordered xiaolongbao and two lunch specials - a mapo tofu and kung pao chicken. Overall, I think Dumpling House is definitely one of the better Chinese food restaurants in the area, but a little pricier than I would like - so I'd strongly recommend coming for their much more affordable lunch specials. The restaurant wasn't very busy at the time, so we got our orders reasonably quickly. The lunch specials came with a nice seaweed/tomato/egg drop soup - a little thicker than I am used to but quite nice to warm us up on a rainy day. Xiaolongbao were larger - with much thicker skins - than the more traditional ones that I'm accustomed to, but were pretty tasty with a flavourful soup/filling. Chicken and tofu dishes were both fine - portion sizes reasonable, and generally I'd just say it was pretty good standard Chinese fare. It's in a fairly nice location, close to Harvard Square, and again their lunch specials are a pretty good value, so I think I'll be back sometime soon :) read more

Quaint restaurant close to the Harvard Square area. It's an authentic restaurant with a mix of Asian and non-Asian customers. We didn't get a chance to try any dumplings and just sampled their lunch specials which were quite good. We had kung pao chicken and beef with mixed vegetables. We liked the beef with mixed vegetables very much. The kung pao chicken was pretty good too but I think I would try something else on their lunch special menu next time since it's a pretty standard dish. Lunch specials were about $11-$12 each and come with rice and a soup. It really hit the spot and was a tasty meal. Service and decor were great also. Servers were friendly and their are lots of tables and natural light. If I'm in the area again, I would definitely come back to try their dinner menu! read more

Not a place that you will notice if you drive past. This place was recommended by my friend who studied here. Lots of selection for authentic Chinese cuisine. If you are a spicy food lover this is definitely the place. If you are daring enough do try the "Fermented Toufu" (direct translation it's smelly beancurd.) A menu, with great variety of choices. In general their dumplings skins are way way too thick - the XLBs had wrappers that were too thick and a bit too doughy - could be much more delicate. These are hard to make, and this is a common complaint I get with XLBs in this town. The whole fish with tofu was decent but could have taken on a more interesting flavor. The fish meat sort of fell apart and didn't seem like it balanced softness with a sense of integrity of the meat. The chicken with vegetables was well stir-fried, but the meat slices were too large. Not sure what the distinguishing flavor was either. The spicy sliced pork came off as overly greasy, and not particularly flavorful. The spicy beef tendon with chili sauce had a much too monolithic flavor, sitting in too much oil, without enough mala or garlic flavor to balance out the oil. Nice that they have tables suitable for large groups. Service was quick and efficient. Overall a decent place to get Chinese food in the Cambridge area, but specific dishes pale in comparison to other areas of the country. read more

This is the most authentic Chinese restaurant in Boston. The food was great and service was quick. I highly recommend the soup dumplings (the pork or lobster are the best). The scallion pancakes are stuffed with beef and crispy on the outside. They have unique dishes that are fun to try like the "stinky tofu". It's an acquired taste but an authentic dish. I have been here a number of times and I think "A-OK" is a good description. The menu has a wide selection of stir fry and dumplings. It could use more pictures on the menu. Regardless of where you sit, it is hard to hold a conversation with your friends during dinner times because it is so packed. Lunchtime is slightly better but still gets pretty loud. I have lived in NYC long enough to not let poor services bother me (i.e. slam the dishes in front of you). You are better off come here knowing what you want and just place your order with the waiter without expecting too much. However, the inconsistency of the bill confuses me. The first time I was here with two friends (one Chinese and one non-Chinese), we paid with the credit card. The second time I was here with a Chinese friend, the waitress told us in Chinese that it would be cash only. I was surprised and we barely had enough cash to cover our 20% tips. The third time I was here with two non-Chinese friends, the waitress told us if we pay cash, we get 10% off the bill. So which one is it then? Not sure if I'd return here anytime soon. I visited here on a Friday evening with a group of three people. There wasn't a wait at 5:45pm, but when we left around 7pm, the line was out the door. The prices are alright for a typical Chinese sit-down restaurant, but I DO NOT recommend any rice or noodle dishes. We ordered vegetable fried rice, and it came out very bland and... moist. It didn't seem like it was cooked and seasoned enough. However, the dumplings were good, and the crispy spicy chicken was great as well. As I was happily eating my dumpling to my surprise I found a baby roach in my food, .That means that there's probably a whole family of roaches in their kitchen. I went back for a refund and they immediately gave it to me as they can confirm with their own eyes that it was a roach. So unless you like extra protein (roaches) in your food this is the best place to go. I should have called the health department, but I hope that the owner of this restaurant find this review and takes action. You can't make reservations, it's first come first serve. So make sure your entire party has arrived before trying to get a table. The service is super quick and the food is delicious! I've been to Dumpling House several times now and I can honestly say it gets a thumbs up. They shoot for a much more authentic Chinese food experience as opposed to the joint in your local mall. So be sure to keep this in mind as you'll see a lot of menu items you might not have come across before. Since it is called Dumpling House I, of course, had to go with the dumplings. And they are darn good. There is quite a selection and all the ones I've tried (I've probably had 5 or 6 different kinds) have been great. And in case you're not feeling the dumplings, there is a lunch menu. This is a great place to break from the norm and really try something more authentic and adventurous. To be honest, I love Dumpling House. I eat food from here probably an average of at least once per month (either Uber eats or dine in) and they never miss. Huge menu selection and every item I have ever gotten has been decent. I have tried: - A29 Shandong Style Pan Fried Dumplings: despite the name of the restaurant, I think the dumplings are one of my less favorite items to get here. Good enough to order if I am craving them, but the flavor of the meat/texture of the skin are nothing special. - A30 Mini Soup Steamed Dumplings with Pork: same opinion as the dumplings ^ - A33 Pan Fried Buns with Pork & Leeks: these are also not my favorite to get here--the outer bun is too thick so the ratio to the filling is off, and the flavor is just okay. - A16 Scallion Pancakes: fried items here are very crispy, which I personally love. - A17 Sliced Beef with Scallions Roll in Pancakes: same as above, and the flavor of the beef + sauce is so yummy. - G16 Sauteed Black Mushrooms over Greens: mushrooms over bok choy in a thickened brown sauce, a fine veggie dish. - G18 Ma Po Tofu: not actually spicy in my opinion despite it saying so on the menu but flavor is good! - E17 Sauteed String Beans with Minced Pork: love this dish! Quite oily but really tasty. - G12 Braised Eggplant with Basil: solid - G13 Shredded Potato with Vinegar: fine, maybe a bit lacking in flavor - B12 Sauteed Rice Noodles: Good rice noodle texture, generous portion! - D11 House Special Lamb with Cumin: super flavorful and delicious, also surprisingly very spicy. - B2 Northern Chinese Style Lamb Soup: One of my go to Uber eats orders when I am feeling sick haha. It is a clear and extremely flavorful meat broth, heavy on the white pepper and generous with the lamb slices. The price is probably a bit higher than it should be for the quality/quantity of the food, but I feel like that is a concession frequently necessary for popular restaurants in the Boston/Cambridge area. Best Chinese food in Cambridge!! Dumpling house has a incredibly long menu including all of the most famous Chinese dishes as well as really authentic deep cuts. Their normal dumplings are amazing, as the name would suggest, but I think the real gems are their soup dumplings and their pork buns. Both are to die for. Food I've tried: - MINI SOUP DUMLINGS WITH PORK AND CRABMEAT ($15 - 7 pieces): the dough is nice and chewy (though on the thicker side), and the soup inside is not overly salty. Flavor wise, a pretty standard soup dumpling. Nothing remarkable, but exactly what I expect. - MINI SOUP DUMLINGS WITH PORK ($14 - 7 pieces): tastes pretty much the same as the option with pork and crabmeat, except without the flavor of the crabmeat (obviously). Again, pretty standard soup dumpling. - Price is higher than comparable restaurants in Chinatown, but compared to other restaurants in Cambridge price is ok. Usually I am not full with just one order, so I would say personally each meal is ~$25. Atmosphere: - Decent number of seating. - I visited during off peak hours so the restaurant was pretty quiet. Service: - Among my friends, this place is known for solid food but terrible service. And indeed in the two times I have visited, it did take perseverance to call upon the attention of the staff. There were moments when we made eye contact but I was still ignored. Perhaps they were busy, but we were one of the few parties in a very quiet restaurant. - But at the end of the day, I don't usually expect the same degree of friendliness from staff at Asian restaurants v. non Asian restaurants.
