After a Dr. appointment we needed to refuel and Dunston's was the right choice. As you enter you are brought to the days when delicious food and excellent customer service is the norm. Our server Tim was polite, friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. Now the vibes here is comfy grandma house cozy plus you have front row seat to the open grill. When you walk in the door you're greeted by a huge fireplace that looks warm and welcoming. You enter into a large room that reminds you of the old timer restaurants your grandparents use to take you to. We had a lovely attentive waitress. She was great. The dining room was pretty empty for a Monday 5pm dinner. But it was our first time here so we didn't mind the quiet atmosphere. While sitting in the dining room you see a wood burning grill. So you get to see your steaks being cooked over an open flames. We ordered calamari and fried mushrooms. The calamari was very crunchy and I wasn't a fan of the breading. The mushrooms were battered and fried. Not much to report on that. They were what you would expect. We both ordered the 10 oz ribeye. I got potato soup and he received a Caesar salad. The potato soup was not homemade. But tasted like it came from a can. The Caesar dressing on the salad tasted like thousand island with a twist. It was definitely not what we were expecting. I didn't eat the soup and my partner ate half of the salad before giving up. Now observing the grill master pull the steaks out of the fridge. That just made me want to walk out. I observed him pounding the meat on the counter, remove it from a plastic bag with his bare hands then toss on the grill. After man handling the meat he proceeded to touch tickets , cooking utensils, his body, other produce before disappearing into the back. Not once did he wear gloves or wash his hands. Now on to the food. The green beans and spinach definitely came from a can and had zero flavor. The au gratin potatoes are cubed potatoes in a cheese wiz type of sauce. The sautéed mushrooms are whole and have zero flavoring. The steaks were bland but cooked at the perfect temp. We ended up taking the food home to our dogs. read more

This place is totally outdated, but the prices are unbeatable, and the food was a reasonably priced and delicious. I didn't enjoy my brisket and they were happy to replace it for me with something else. They definitely need a little facelift in this restaurant. For the price, you cannot beat this Dallas staple! This is not the most elegant steakhouse around but it has been in business for many years for a reason. The steaks are cooked in an open kitchen inside the restaurant which gives a lovely smell throughout. I got the bacon wrapped filet with a caeser salad and a baked potato. My husband also got some fried okra and i think mac and cheese. Solid food and a nice family restaurant for a great price- it was something like $17 or 18 each for everything. The lady that helped me (Desiree, I believe) was kind, helpful, extremely professional and friendly.....the food, I rated a "1" because it was horrible and not good, not at all (grilled pork chop, baked potato and a green salad. Without any exaggeration, the pork chop was "bloodly" and very hard to slice, the baked potato was dry-like it was baked a few weeks ago, the salad was "satisfactory". I have never experienced a meal of this nature in many years from this restaurant; I was/am extremely disappointed and saddened by my experience on last night. I have so many negative things to say about last night's meal, however, dealing with Desiree, allowed my overall rating (3) to slightly rise (she is always so kind and delightful. I really want a refund from last night's meal. A call from one of the Dunston's would also be appreciated. Honestly, it saddens me that this meal was really so bad for $23 ($18.35 + tip). I rarely leave five star reviews. This is an absolute gem. This is the best value meal that I have enjoyed in as long as I can remember. A filet mignon with mushroom caps and potatoes and green beans, accompanied by a glass of Cabernet. The waiter apologized and brought me a second cocktail, since he did not mix it according to my specifications. The Cabernet was a very generous poor. The steak was absolutely delicious. This was an absolute swing and a miss. Two stars only because our server was nice and attentive, and the restaurant was clean. Food was one star, if that. I think I ate maybe half of my dinner. Salads were soaked in dressing (what I get for forgetting to order it on the side). We both had mac and cheese as one of the sides (just okay, nothing to write home about). My other side was mashed potatoes, which were somehow both moist and dry at the same time? Flavor was okay. Fried okra was fried okra, not much else to say on that front. I had the salmon and it was the most dry piece of fish I've ever eaten. It was almost inedible. My husband had the ribeye which was cooked fine, but in his words, "if they offer A1 sauce, it means they don't have faith in their own steak." I was honestly so disappointed. On the way to the airport & wanted a good steak. Luckily Dunston's was close. Old school steakhouse. The smell of the mesquite wood grill greets you before you open the door. Entrance is modest, dining room is dimly lit & cozy. Music is a mix of old country music legends. Think Willie, Waylon, Loretta Lynn etc. The salads came quick & wer8e decent sized. The bacon wrapped filet was tender but should've ordered it one stage more rare than medium. The baked tater was delicious & a good size but not huge. I added the fried shrimp as the combo was only with NY strip. Shrimp was $2.50/each but appeared hand breaded & was wonderful! Skip the rolls as they may have been in the saddle bag too long. A little hard. Maybe they should make some fresh yeast rolls to fit their style better. Linda was friendly but needs to relax a little & enjoy her guests. I am a fan of the Lover's Ln location so I thought I would try this location. I was very disappointed. This location is large but lacks the atmosphere that the other location has. I don't know if this location was built specifically for Dunston's but it looks like an old gentlemens club on the inside. The waitstaff was attentive but we were not offered any bar drink menu and we were only provided the dinner menu. The food was just ok. The steak was cooked to the right temperature but it lacked flavor. The mac and cheese was like something from a frozen dinner. It was also disappointing that they do not have the little salad bar like the other location. Instead you are given a very wet salad. If you like dressing more than you like lettuce, then this is for you. Overall, this location is very disappointing and I recommend avoiding this one and go to the Lover's Ln location. read more

Big spacious venue, this place looks like it has been planted here for quite some time. The interior design is very homey , and comfortable. We were seated pretty quickly for a party of 4 around lunch time. Traffic here seems busy but not so busy that seating will be a long wait. Social distancing seems like it is enforced and staff are wearing masks. To start, the waitress seemed like she was in a rush, maybe because she had several tables to account for which foreshadows what I will describe here shortly. Sale was good, regular hose sale with croutons and ranch. Rolls were nice and soft. However when it came down to my steak I was pretty disappointed. I ordered the medium well done steak with a baked potato. My coworker had the well done. My steak tasted so burnt I couldn't believe that this was a medium well done steak. Apparently what happened was my coworker had my steak which was prompting delivered to her instead of me. I hope that the waitress will pay more close attention next time and that there won't be any mishaps like this again. Solid 3 stars. read more

After hearing about Dunston's for years we went for my 65th birthday last night. I made the reservation on Wed for 6 called the restaurant on Friday to change to 7. Got updated email. Showed up at 6:30 pm checked in. At 7:05 pm asked why we were not seated. She said we were only showing a party of 6. I showed her the changed reservation code, she said she would have to ask her manager. Finally, we got seated around 7:15pm The worst service, couldn't get the correct count of ice teas, finally got the drinks and our adult drinks still have not taken our dinner orders. Asked for a different server. Did not happen. Still at 8pm just taking dinner orders. Salads were wrong , forgot one salad and potato had to get another person to go get that order fixed. We ate and open gifts, the only good part of the evening except the company at the table. If this is supposed to be a 4 star restaurant it's not up to par. Don't waste your time or money. For a $400.00 bill it was not worth the trip. Drive the miles to Four Winds in Wills Point where it's still a 4 Star all the way. Very disappointing. read more

I've been eating at Dunston's for over 40 years and usually I'm pleased with the food. But a recent trip has me reconsidering how soon, if ever, I'll return. The server was rude and disrespectful to our entire group of 8. I ordered the filet well done as usual. My steak was closer to medium rare. It even had blood drops on top of the steak. I told the server the steak was not well done as ordered and I wanted to send it back to be cooked longer. She refused saying their new policy due to Covid is they can't put a steak back on the grill once it's served. She said I could order and pay for another steak. Totally ridiculous policy. She also got argumentative about the sides. I wanted something instead of the potato for dietary reasons. She said it was a potato or nothing. I've never in 40 years had such bad service and food at Dunstons. If I ever go back, it'll be a long time from now. Worst experience ever! read more
