Offerings: - Miso soup: very solid, not too salty as many places are doing. - Hokkaido roll: a good sushi roll with good toppings. This was made well and what you expect for mid-tier sushi. - Jackpot Roll: My partner's pick, covered in crunchy tempura flakes. A good roll but with more mild flavors. - Katsu curry plate: this was good and exactly what was described. We expected more curry but it was more of a drizzle on top. The curry had no vegetables in it, just the sauce. There were a few blanched veggies served on the side. This meal could not have cost them more than $8 to produce, so good on them for selling it for $20. - Beef Udon: This was surprisingly good. Exceeded my expectations. The noodles were a great texture and the broth was very flavorful and complex without being overly salty. I also enjoyed the stir fried beef in the dish. I've visited a handful of times since my last review and wanted to follow up with more recent experiences. It seems that there have been some changes at Ebisu (change in management?). While the menu remains mostly the same with offerings, I did drop a star for my overall review, mostly for ambiance and service, a little bit for quality of the food. Most recently during our visit, the restaurant had an overwhelming smell of cleaning products, which was unpleasant. I asked the server if a restroom door was left open, and he went back to check and apologized that the janitorial closet was propped open. Despite closing it, the smell still lingered throughout the space. The sushi rolls have still been consistently tasty, which is what I tend to order anyway. However, the entree dishes seem to be on the drier side (katsus, chicken), and moreso relying on sauces for flavor. My mom introduced me to Ebisu and we enjoyed our dinner here. The salmon teriyaki was delish and the gyoza appetizer was good too. Love that you get a choice of having it deep-fried or pan-fried! I liked the steamed veggies, rice and miso soup that came with the salmon dinner plate, as well as the portion size of the salmon itself. Our server was great and everyone was super friendly. The blue dishes are a nice touch. The only thing I'd say they could improve on -and this is subjective- is that there was a little too much salt on the veggies for my taste. This place has become my go-to sushi place. The quality of the fish is quite good. And the prices are reasonable. I've dined in 2-3 times and had takeout a couple times. The dining room is a pretty good size, and they have a couple private rooms for parties which is nice. The decor and ambiance is nice enough. Not super fancy but definitely doesn't feel like a hole in the wall either. Aside from the menus online, there's a board of 8-10 additional items (oysters, various fish like bluefin, etc. ). Stuff I've tried: - Rainbow roll: a pretty standard roll but it's a good sign when this isn't one of the cheapest rolls on the menu, and that's bc the quality of the fish is actually good, not that weird neon orange and pink salmon and tuna you'll get at a buffet. I would've liked a bit of cucumber for some texture and brightness but still a good rendition of this roll. - Crazy roll: this was a nice spicy roll though it wasn't all that spicy. Tasty though. Would order again. - San Juan roll: now this is a spicy roll. They put a fairly large slice of jalapeño in the middle of this roll which may be good or not-so-good depending on your preference. Personally, I liked it quite a bit; though, I did avoid chewing on the jalapeño pieces towards the end. - Sacramento roll: I liked the soft shell crab. Good stuff. - Ebisu roll: I'm sorry to say that the namesake roll is probably the worst thing I've had here. I got this as some part of a combo (super combo?). And while it isn't horrible, I generally don't like cooked fish in my rolls. - Happy combo: a nice sampling of nigiri. The pieces aren't particularly big so don't order this is you're really hungry. - Sesame chicken: pretty good, but inferior to other places I've gone to. While I'd order it again, I wouldn't go here specifically for this dish. - Tonkatsu ramen: the broth is very porky (which is good!). It's an enjoyable bowl of ramen. Servers have always been nice and attentive. And the last time I dined in, they had a barcode to scan on the receipt where I was able to pay for my bill on my phone, which I think is great. read more

It's conveniently located close to the 1-5 exit on EG Blvd. I had the Sesame Chicken Entrée (lunch) and tried the Elk Grove Special Roll & Rainbow Roll. Everything was good. The chicken was cooked perfectly. I did prefer the Elk Grove Special Roll over the Rainbow (but I seem to like rolls with more sauce in general, which isn't traditional for sushi). We had dinner here yesterday and didn't disappoint. I like the place and the vibes of the restaurant. Many varieties of nigiri and sashimi but not always available. I think thats one of the downside of it. The nigiri is good and fresh. We really like the wagyu roll since this is the only resto we tried that has it. Food was great. Our second time back. We really enjoyed the Elk Grove Special Roll and the Sacramento Roll; the Hokkaido Roll was good too! I did find some of the rolls a little sauce heavy, but it was easy to just slide it off. Next time, I'll remember to ask for lite sauce. The service was good. But I'd not say it was excellent. We kept calling our waitress over when we needed something. I think the other waitress felt sorry for us and kept refilling our water and helping us. OMG one of my favorite Japanese places has changed owners and management. Not for the better. It happened 2 weeks ago. I went there last night with the family. I started off with the oysters on the half shell. I asked if they had the Kumimotos and they said they did. When I got them, they were big and were not Kumimotos . The server checked and said they were. She saw the box. They oysters were plain and had nothing on them. It usually comes with roe eggs and sauce on them. Instead, it came with hot sauce and 2 other sauces. It didn't look very appealing or fresh. I ate one and it wasn't good. Not very fresh. I was so disappointed that I sent it back. The manager came by to apologize. I asked if he changed vendors of their seafood and where he got the oysters and he said they didn't. He wanted to give me another the old way it used to come. I really didn't want to since the oysters would probably be the same. He insisted and they came out looking ok but still some were larger and not Kumimotos. They were better. The Chiriashi Don was made differently too. It tasted good and was fresh. We had the garlic salmon which seemed not as fresh as the ones I had in my Chirashi. Oh well. The Yakisomba which is one of my favorite here was soggy. The noodles were over cooked. It was ok. Hopefully they get better. A lot of the staff left so some changes. Fresh fish is the key to any sushi place so I hope they get the quality back otherwise this place will just be an average place and not make it. I've been here once last year and heard it changed management. Decided to come and try it with the partner who also came with me last time. He ordered the sashimi and salmon teriyaki bento. He enjoyed the sashimi and said it was good but would gave preferred a thinner cut. I prefer a thicker cut (more bang for your buck). We shared the fried oysters and we both liked them. They were nice and plump; not soft and sad. I really enjoyed the unagi claypot. I love claypot and this place did it right. The eel was cooked well and not too saucy. The egg was good, but I would have it a bit gooier to eat with the rice. Probably best that it's gooey to maintain the claypot rice's texture. I was very very impressed by the crispy rice. It was cooked perfectly for me. None stuck to the pot and was still very crispy like rice crackers or chips. The partner on the other hand liked it but said it was too oily. How else will it maintain the crispiness without sticking to the claypot?? I also ordered a large sake for myself since the partner doesn't drink but the server, I think her name was Nicki, brought 2 cups and said in case I coerce him to drink. I didn't mention how many cups to bring, but apparently we both were on the same wavelength because I did want two to try to have him drink. He had half a cup lol. The rest of the staff were very attentive and asked us how we were doing and removed empty plates out of our way. The owner was there too and asked us how everything was. I shared my satisfaction on the Unagi Claypot. I enjoyed the food and overall experience. If they have a happy hour menu in the future, I'll be there more often. We also got a double toro roll, which had good flavor however there was wasabi in each roll, which I did not like at all. I do not like eating wasabi so it honestly ruined the role for me. However, when I removed it, it was really good yet still lingered a wasabi aftertaste. The assorted Nigiri was the biggest letdown. Most of the fish tasted pretty chewy and was super fishy. The only thing that was good on the nigiri was the Toro and salmon. But the sashimi in the back was so amazing. The salmon and crab baked rolls were fire too, and a good filler. The food was super good. We enjoyed the rolls, and tried a little bit of everything. The hamachi was delicious as was the salmon teriyaki. I think what made me rate it 4 instead of 5 stars was the service. Everything made it feel like we were inconveniencing our waitress. One example was when we asked what the different types of fish were that we were served and she just said she didn't know and left. She would run in and drop food off and take off again so we weren't able to order dessert, and when we had to finally track her down for our check (we had been waiting for about 20 minutes after all of our plates were cleared) , she seemed very annoyed that we were asking about it. She half tossed it on the table and quickly walked off so we had to track her down again to pay, where we were once again met with almost indifference/annoyance. It could've been a bad day for her, and the other people seemed nice. I do feel like service is a huge part of what I look for in my dining experience, so that was incredibly disappointing. We saw in yelp this place has a high review. So we thought of trying it. We ordered the Teriyaki Salmon and chicken katsu bento box, 2 sushi rolls and unagi don. The bento box and the 1st roll came after 15 min which is ok. But the other roll and unagi don came 15-20 min later. Bento box came with dry, wilted salad with no dressing at all. Salmon was questionably undercooked. Our waitress wasn't attentive and didnt even took the time to offer any water refill. The sushi rolls, unagi don and the included miso soup was just ok. Not something I would order again. Lastly, in their men's toilet customers were not able to wash their hands because of mulfunctioning faucet. Overall, it was not a good experience. read more

It seems there may be new ownership since my last visit, because the quality and consistency have definitely declined. The Double Toro Roll didn't actually contain salmon toro--just regular salmon with noticeably thin fat marbling. The toro itself had an unexpected bite to it and tasted more like akami than true fatty tuna. The hamachi was bland and had a citrusy note that felt like it was covering up an older fish smell, which was disappointing. The curry itself was super hot (microwaved?), but the rice AND vegetables were actually...cold. My wife was OK with me eating. Over two hours later, around 9:45, she received her salmon roll. She enjoyed it, and said ot was delicious. So, yay on them for that. About 20 minutes later, we asked them to cancel the sashimi platter. We left after a total of three hours, on a reservation, while waiting forever. Another disappointment was the unequal customer service: a gentleman next to us was seated "late," and was offered complimentary beverages to his table as an apology. For a reservation, not our whole order with a RESERVATION, we were offered nothing, and with our server, went over the check to see which items to take off before we paid...because we hadn't received them. While busy, there was not a huge crowd of people waiting to get in, and it seemed like a typical busy Friday night. I still spent a good amount of money on an incomplete sushi order and a subpar Japanese curry dish. Again, only leaving a 3 because I'm honoring the day of love. Hmmmm... The restaurant itself is undeniably well-lit, nice and clean looking, and has kind staff! I'm just not sure if the food itself is up to my taste... And... the yuzu hamachi was super super super unpleasant. I think it's the fault of the yuzu sauce itself.. The fish is drenched in an overly sweet, syrupy yuzu sauce. It tastes like candy which is really unsettling to say about raw fish LOL. The fish itself was good on its own but the yuzu was just . really too much . Also our food honestly came out super slowly. We got like one or two dishes at a time and had to wait a long while for each one to come. I think the table behind us had the same problem.
