I've been here several times now and it's a regular Saturday brunch spot when we're in town. The food quality and prices are still great and their service has improved. The people are all nice, but they were a little disorganized when they first opened, which is understandable. They've gotten it down pretty smooth now. Totally recommend as a place for a quick bite for breakfast or lunch a nice place to relax and sit with a coffee as well (they have a small open space outside that they sometimes put chairs and tables out for). read more

Me & my friend decided this morning to go out and have a meal outside our apartment. We decided to finally try out Effy's Cafe since we have been hearing good stuffs about it for quite a while now. Now, I can say I am very pleased. The cafe was so cute and fancy. Service was excellent. The server was really nice, always had a smile, attentive and cute too :) We had a grilled asian salad with salmon, french toast and greek omelette. Everything was well cooked and perfectly seasoned, the portions were perfect to start our day. For drinks, we had their freshly squeezed juice which was so good and healthy! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for good food and healthy place. This place is a gem here in the Upper West Side. This place was so cute!! Okay so first, love the pescatarian menu with a ton of vegan/vegetarian options too. I got an almond milk latte that was sublime - super foamy, cute latte art, best latte I've had in a hot second for sure. I also got the classic avocado toast which was simple but the bread was crispy and the avocado was seasoned really nicely. Great little Israeli spot that serves up eggs, wraps, sandwiches, and salads. Good selection of coffee beverages and fresh juices/smoothies to wash it all down with. Friendly service and very relaxed vibe. This is a great spot to pull up a table and get some work done. They have fast/free WiFi, plenty of outlets, and comfortable seating. During the summertime they open up the entire front of the cafe and it provides a nice breeze and a nice break to take a break from work and people watch. Recommended! read more

Deeeeelish!!!! We tried 5 dishes for 4 people ( they made a mistake when someone changed an order, but ended up comping us for it! Great deal and great people!). Two of my dining partners had the Effy's salad, avocado and kale, the dressing tasted great. I had the Effy's breakfast which had 2 eggs, and an accompaniment of side dishes, lebne, tuna fish, feta cheese, hummus and Israeli salad with pita. All were amazing. Another dining partner had the smoked fish scramble, which came with a salad, pita, he enjoyed it. We got the felafel dish as a "mistake". The felafel was cooked exactly a it should be, with enough parsley in it, as it should be, and spiced exactly like in the Middle East. I would definitely recommend this place for breakfast, brunch or lunch. You cannot go wrong here, enjoy! read more

Delicious! Ordered the green shashuka, came with hummus and pita. Amazing! Tasted so good. Loved the flavor of the tomatoes and eggs together, especially when eaten with the hummus and pitas. Only complaint was the slow service, even when the cafe was t that busy. Had to wait 20 minutes for the server to take my order, and roughly 20 minutes for the server to come by and ask for the check. I think I even saw one of them falling asleep on a table in the back. Just happened upon this place looking for a quick bite. Everything looked so tasty on the menu but we ended up getting the Smoked Fish Platter and Effy's Breakfast to split. Loved this very cute and delicious spot! Saw the good reviews on yelp and had to see for myself. I ordered the Mediterranean platter and my bf ordered the French toast challah and both were sooooo good! My platter was large and filled with many options such as hummus, Israeli salad, babaganoush (however you spell it), falafel, and an eggplant salad. The pita was warm and cut into fourth for easy eating. The French toast was so pretty and was even more delicious. So sweet and soft it melted in my mouth aha. The only thing I'd say was a negative was the slow wait staff. Came here for a Sunday brunch and it wasn't too busy so I was surprised on the lack of service. Had to get up and go to the cashier a few times to ask for water. I'd come back just next time be I'd be more forceful when asking for water/anything. Food wise though 5/5! read more

The food was terrible. We ordered the smoked fish platter where they gave very little smoked salmon and the other fish spreads were not good. The goat cheese omelet was flavorless. This little gem is a MUST-visit for all those in the area. If I still lived in the UWS I'd make at least a weekly trip to Effy's. I ordered the Moroccan fish and asked the waitress to substitute the potatoes, which she did with a recommendation of sautéed kale and a warm/genuine smile. Even though I was in a rush, I made sure to walk near the kitchen and request that the chef raise his hand so that I could thank him for the incredibly savory meal he prepared. He gave me a humble smile and proceeded with his mastery. Not only was I blown away by the food, but also the price. I scanned the menu before ordering and noticed that the prices were very reasonable. In addition, the staff is very hands-on and create a homey feeling in the restaurant. I got the Effy's breakfast (for $14) and thought how I could've made all of it at home. I actually enjoyed my experience here. You're def paying for the decor. I would've rated this place 3/5 but deducted two stars because.... I had to pull the waitress aside and asked if her she could check on my smoothie. This was when my friends were more than halfway done with their meal. Last time I checked smoothies were easier to make than 4 brunch platters. When we left a worker came out and yelled at us to "NEXT TIME CLOSE THE DOOR". If your establishment has an entrance where the door doesn't function properly, that's not on the patrons who are there supporting your establishment. It's on YOUR business to maintain and fix any issues to provide a seamless experience for your customers. That's running a business 101. Never forgot that. I'm not coming back here. Ever. read more

I'm done Been waiting for over an hour for a simple breakfast (omlette with sauteed spinach). People canceled their orders and left because of how long it took. Pro: the waiter was nice and friendly. But they need to upgrade their kitchen staff. Update: They replied to this review (twice actually). First time they apologized, but the second time they blamed me for coming in on a day that the cook wasn't here. Said that the cook was on vacation. That's why there was only one person was in the kitchen. If they knew that the cook was gone, why didn't they find a replacement, or close down for a day? read more

Great options for lighter, healthy options. When we stopped in around 6:30 on a Saturday night, the place was not busy at all. One girl behind the counter also acted our server. Seating was where you like, so we picked a spot at the front by the window. We were brought water and menus, and the service throughout our meal was quick, attentive, and friendly. Breakfast is served all day, apparently, and was definitely tempting. In the end though, I went with the halloumi and fried eggplant sandwich. My boyfriend went with the grilled halloumi with avocado and tomato, and a bowl of vegetable noodle soup. My sandwich came with a choice of fries or side salad and I got the salad. Our food came out quickly and was fresh and delicious. The flavors on the halloumi and eggplant sandwich were bright and the pickles added a nice brininess I really enjoyed. The salad was simple. A little heavy on the cilantro, which might be a deterrent to some, but I liked it. My boyfriend's sandwich was also quite good. Halloumi doesn't really melt, so it didn't have that gooeyness you might look for in a typical grilled cheese, but it does warm up quite nicely, and the multigrain bread was hearty and toastey. The soup was also quite good, I had quite a few bites of that. Altogether, we really enjoyed our meal. It was very reasonably priced for the portion sizes, and it was nice to get something that I felt good about eating. read more

I've had breakfast/brunch twice here already and they serve a mean mediterranean brunch. I love the Middle Eastern Breakfast and the shakshuka, and had a nibble of my friend's avocado toast and can give it 2 thumbs up as well. Also their homefries + eggs + toast special is a STEAL for the price - it's listed as a snack but is a full meal, and only $5!!! I also like their selection of teas a lot. The staff has always been all smiles and very kind to me - even when I came with my mother who can be quite picky and had a lot of questions/notes for her order. We spent 3 days here in NYC. Before we go back today in Seattle, my family decided to eat in Effy's Cafe yesterday for lunch around 12:30. The place seems to be busy at that time. The server welcome us with a great smile and give us a good recommendation of their food. Even if we are group of 7 and she have a lot of customers at that time, she still able to manage everybody in the restaurant and make all of us enjoy our stay. The food here was so good and you can tell that everything was so fresh from the ingredients they use and the quality. The portion was huge with a affordable price. My children enjoyed their pancakes and omelette plus the smoothie was so good. She recommend the verry berry and green guardian and they loved it. I love the fact that she gave some crayons for my 3 kids while they waiting and I don't know what can we ask for about her great service. The great thing she convinced us to try their dinner entree plus they have HAPPY HOUR from 5pm-7pm, and we came back around 6pm. Where do I begin? There was a prix fixe special tonight that came with an appetizer, entree, dessert, and glass of wine. I have to say everything was absolutely amazing. Very good portion size too. Started with the falafel and hummus. Falafel was just right, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. For the entree I got the Grilled Chermoula Fish. You have a choice between tilapia or salmon. I got the salmon. It was sensational! Decent size piece of fish and very juicy and full of flavor. Really enjoyed it. The grilled vegetables on the side were also really good. For the dessert I had the baklava. I normally don't like sweets but it was delicious. Nice and crispy with a soft center. Also not too sweet for my taste. This was the second time in my life that I have not tipped. Terrible service, there were two waitresses, one was at least somewhat apologetic, the other one however had a terrible attitude. they forgot our coffee and when I asked for it they brought them without bringing sugar, I asked for it she rolled her eyes saying it is in the back. The same thing happened with ketchup. I had to get up go back and bring ketchup, sugar and extra plates which I did not bother asking for. No one came to check if we needed a refill for coffee or anything, and it literally seemed they did not care one bit about costumers. They then said they will give us the 10% off managerial discount because we were waiting forever and then they did not but this also is the least of my problems. Will never return... read more

When we asked what the hold up was, especially because people getting take-out were getting coffee instantly, the woman behind the counter rudely yelled "[you're] not the only customer here, you can wait!" Food: arrived after 40 minutes and it was cold (butter didn't melt on toast). Breakfast wrap was a dry pita with a smear of avocado, and a tiny piece of cheese - mostly tomato and tasteless egg white. Over priced. Ambiance: crowded, noisy, cramped.
