This was the worst Mexican food I've had in quite sometime. The queso sauce was more like a cheap nacho cheese. It didn't even have a cheese texture. I love El Fenix. I've been going there my whole life starting with the original one in downtown Dallas. The one in McKinney is up to par. Although I love the food and so does my husband, he always makes fun of me when we go because the clientele in there is usually um, how do I say it, mostly seniors. I tell him they have tried everything and still know the best. They chips are crispy and light and the salsa is flavorful with a good amount of heat. I have to be fair I don't love their queso, but the chips and salsa makes up for it. I usually get the combination #2 which is a cheese enchilada and a crispy beef taco. The cheese enchilada is covered with a zesty chili con carne. The taco shell is freshly made and the beef filling is a yummy beef taco meat. The wait staff is always attentive. The restaurant is clean, but the decor is dated, but thats okay because it has always looked that way. read more

A friend had me meet her here for lunch. What a freaking mistake. There's poor service and then there's El Fenix. Our waitress had an attitude the entire time, and when I pointed out that she brought out our entrees but never our appetizer she responded with "it happens." What? Ten minutes after the appetizer shows. Dude...we don't want it now! She refused to take it back or off the bill. Fine. Consider that 7.99 your tip then. She never came back after that. No drink refills, no checking on our food, nothing. The lady asking if food was ok whom I thought was a manager never stopped at our table. She talked with her friends at the other table for a good bit. I finally got her attention but she help up a "be right there" signal. We waited almost 15 minutes. Apparently she disappeared with our waitress. Wong be back. The food was horrid (Other locations are great) and service is beyond repair. We only typically go here when they do their kids eat free promotions, and while the service is typically fine, the food is always incorrect. On our last visit I ordered tacos, yet I got enchiladas and had to flag down a waiter as ours disappeared. My biggest complaint is the recent health score this establishment has. 30 is failing and it scored 27, the highest in the city. That's unacceptable. With so many other options for Tex Mex in McKinney, an almost failing health inspection is not on my menu. Clean up your act! Pretty much nonexistant customer service from my waiter "Wilson L." From the time I said I would have water. Apparently by beverage choice wasn't correct and he pegged me as someone who wouldn't be tipping. From that point on he did not provide any service other than to plop my plate and check in front of me. El Fenix had a nice atmosphere that resonated with its Mexican origins. There are paintings of homes in Mexico and a group of people farming to go with the traditional Mexican music in the background. In terms of our order, we got the complementary chips and salsa and we ordered queso with it. The queso was good but was probably more milky/creamy than the other queso I've had. I got enchiladas and I wasn't impressed to be honest. I thought they could use more quality cheese and do more with the side of black beans and rice. I wish they would add more flavor and seasoning to the black beans. They also had a creamy sauce on top of the enchilada that was alright for the first bite but I soon became sick of it. My family loves Mexican food and we decided to give El Felix a try! Rustic colorful setting with nice music to listen to. Greeted quickly and they got us a great table. Our waitress was Martha and she is a delight! She worked hard and she's a bit quiet so it was nice to see her start chatting with us. The manager was all smiles and very solicitous about our needs. We never ran out of drinks, salsa, chips, because they paid such close attention. The queso was delicious as were my beef tamales. The frozen margaritas were yummy. I was really happy with our visit here. I came with my mom and grandma, since we take grandma out for Mexican food every Saturday. We were served very quickly and politely by Leopoldo (Leo), and all of our orders, including special requests, were accurate. My grandma asked for extra onions in her enchilada and he did that plus brought out extra diced onions in case, which was a sweet touch. I got the veggie fiesta burrito with ranchero sauce, and it was fantastic! It was an item on special I think (it was on the inserted menu, not the main menu) but I definitely recommend it! The veggies in it were grilled, but were also still crisp, which is a positive in my opinion. We'll definitely be back! read more

This place was practically empty on a Friday evening and I wondered why. The service was slow, the waiter forgot our drinks and it took a long time for food to arrive. My wife had ordered tilapia and although the outside looked nicely seared, the inside was cold and uncooked. Yuk. The waiter did apologise and took it back to the cook to show him. Called in yesterday to reserve a socially distant table for my family. They were super accommodating and loved that the whole staff was wearing masks. Our server was Martha. This location however has a serious problem with their staff which makes it almost not worth going to (this is however only since they re-opened after COVID closed them down for awhile). People here seem very uninterested in helping you, wether it to be seated, answer the phone or basically anything besides stand around. Twice we have been left waiting for an order over 30 minutes to only find out it had not been made yet. Our last visit we called the location and the phone was answered with "can you hold on?" and the receiver placed on the counter. I got several minutes of listening to various conversations and banter before I decided to go in instead of waiting. We got our order, and noticed the phone still off the hook. Had to ask for another bag. Salsa the same. Had to ask for more. Service at the restaurant was just terrible. Asked for a margarita while I waited (for about 30 minutes) and it came out just before the food so they put it in a styrofoam cup to take with me. Just disappointed. I know Covid has affected operations but there's no reason to skimp on normal quantities and ignore proper service to your customer.
