Maybe the mixup was because we ordered at the counter before sitting at table instead of sitting down first. After sitting down, three other parties sat down and received their orders over the course of 20 minutes. When we went to inquire if somehow our order didn't get put in, they realized they gave our order to one of the other tables because the order was similar to theirs. Earlier on they brought us an order that wasn't ours and we turned it away, so the same must have happened again. No harm - they hadn't prepared any food yet, and even if we received the food immediately, we would have had to leave in 10 minutes since we were on a tight schedule, so we just left at that point. read more

Previously, inside the same space that is now El Sol, there was another Mexican restaurant in Point Richmond. I never tried that other place because, to be honest, it had too many poor Yelp reviews. But recently, I noticed that the previous Mexican restaurant went away (looks like the Yelpers got it right) & El Sol replaced it. Intrigued by the renewed possibility of good Mexican food in Point Richmond, the girlfriend & I wanted to give it a try. Walking in & looking around, the decor is nice, warm & inviting. The area inside the doorway, where there are a couple menu boards, was poorly lit but the remainder of the restaurant was brightly lit. I thought that was odd. Service was prompt & friendly. Seated & with menus in hand, the 1st thing I noticed was that the food selection was mostly of the generic Americanized Mexican food variety: tacos, burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas & tamales. Keeping it simple is perfectly fine as long as you serve a quality product. I ordered a Carne Asada Plate, described on the menu as "a plate filled with grilled steak, served with rice, beans, salad, and tortillas." The girlfriend ordered the RG Special, which is very similar to the Carne Asada Plate. We both also ordered Hibiscus Blossom Drinks. After ordering, chips & salsa, along with our drinks, were brought to our table without much delay. The chips & salsa were decent & the Hibiscus Blossom Drink was very good. Things were getting off to a good start. But then there was a long, long... long wait before we got our entrees. There were only 2 other patrons in the place at that time (we noticed they waited a very long time for their food too), so it was hard to figure what the problem was. So what was the reward for our patience? The salad was fresh with crisp veggies. The tortillas were good & served scorching hot wrapped in tin foil. The beans & rice were just OK. The carne asada, itself, was a big disappointment. Tender, grilled flat steak cooked to rare or medium rare would have been ideal. What we both got instead was dried-out, shriveled-up strips of a brown, chewy meat-like substance. This carne asada was so bad that the girlfriend felt driven to write her own even more critical Yelp review of El Sol. My plate was $11.95, so not worth it. Hoping that a really good Mexican restaurant had arrived in Point Richmond, the girlfriend & I gave El Sol a try. I guess we'll have to keep hoping & still have to go outside of Point Richmond for good, authentic Mexican food. read more

My rule of thumb with Mexican food is The dirtier, the better--clean places like chipotle are not going to give you good authentic food. This place adds to my evidence. It's clean, well-decorated, bright, and friendly. However the food is boring, at best. Nothing tastes fresh or flavorful or memorable. At the same time, nothing is offensive--this might be a good place for picky eaters--but I'm still very underwhelmed with the menu overall. They do serve potatoes with chorizo, which was new to me and seems great as a hangover cure, if you're into that sort of thing. The staff is nice so it's not a bad place to go, just don't have expectations of satisfying your craving for Mexican food. read more

Easily some of the WORST tacos I've ever had. I tried 3 kinds (steak, fish and shrimp) and all were equally flavorless. The meat was dry and chewy, the shrimp was shriveled, and the fish was like mush. Salsa seemed to be out of a jar. It took a long time, adding insult to injury. We had a quiet lunch here today. We were greeted warmly by the woman in the kitchen and told to sit where we wanted. Service was prompt. The atmosphere was very nice Mexican with interesting photos on the wall. The music was fun and upbeat. We were given complimentary chips and salsa. I had the chicken tortilla soup. The small size is a bowl so I am glad I did not order the large! My husband had the chile rellano and churro. Then we added guacamole. All in all the food was good though spiciness was lacking with everything we ordered. We used the table condiments to add hotness but it still wasn't the same. read more

Taco Tuesdays!! They actually have a taco Tuesday special (3 tacos for $6). I tried the carne asada street taco and a hard shell (shredded) chicken taco. All were pretty good. Will return for more! Came here for lunch on 4/10 and ordered off their large chalk menu board above the cash register. When the cashier rang me up, the price was more than what was posted. When I pointed this out, the cashier said (regarding the menu board), "Oh, that's, like, 7 years old." I said, yeah, well, people come in and order off it. She then said, curtly, "Do you want it?" Meaning my order. I asked for my card back and went to eat elsewhere. I did reach out to the owner to describe the incident and to suggest they update their menu board, but received no response. It's not really legal to post one price and then charge another. I've now submitted a complaint to the county. Buyer beware. read more

If you are looking for a hearty, good South-of-the-Border authentic meal, this may not be the best place but it is acceptable. The tiger prawn Super Burrito that I just ordered had only six ( 1 inch ) small prawns inside the burrito. I found a fly cruising around where I was seating. It would been a 3 star for this restaurant but the presence of a fly in the restaurant costed them another star. Price is just about average so your pocket will not suffer a lot. read more

I had made an order thru Doordash. In the options section, I requested that onions be placed inside the enchiladas. I received a e-mail from Doordash saying the my order was being increased by approximately $4.00 due to my "special request". My request was that onions be added to my order. $4.00 dollars for ONIONS!! SERIOUSLY!!. On top of that, the instructions were not followed. I asked that the $4.00 onions be placed inside of the enchiladas, however the $4.00 dollar onions were sprinkled on top. I had ordered from them several times in the past with a request to add onions and never experienced any issues. While I think they're food is the best around, I won't be ordering from them any longer. I always ate inside the restaurant, but due to the pandemic I ordered thru Doordash. I wanted to support my local business, hoping they would not have to close their doors. Also, I always recommended them and spoke highly of them. Unfortunately I won't be doing that either. I had been to El Sol about a handful of times in the past; while the food was fine, I chose to go today more for convenience....Little Louie's was too busy and I needed to eat within the lunch hour as I was working and couldn't wait. El Sol does not have a large seating area, probably about 10-15 tables at most - it took them about 10 minutes just to get a seat, and another 15 minutes to get anyone to take our order. I ordered a burrito and so did my companion. Nothing complicated. After what felt like a really long time a server quickly rushing by asked in passing if we were ok. I stated that No, we had been waiting a long time and I had not received my food she did not really say anything other than "OH!" A few minutes later we went to the front counter to ask where the food had been. My lunch hour was LONG over and I had to race to get back to work. The lady behind the counter said "Your meal is in the microwave, it will be ready soon". I am not quite sure why my meal had to be microwaved, The lady behind the counter then proceeded to tell me that they were really busy and that was why our meals took so long. Honestly, while the seating area was full, it was not what I would call a lunch rush of any kind. By the time we had mentioned our meals, it was past 1PM and the seating area had cleared out considerably. I had to leave without eating, by this time I was frustrated, not only were they not at all apologetic for their service, but during the entire time we were there we had been ignored - no water refills, nobody stopping to check on us. For me the words "We were really busy" should never be an excuse for slow or poor service from a place that serves meals during lunch especially when a majority of their patrons are there during their lunch break. I wont be returning, the food is mediocre at best and it wont break my heart not returning. read more

I really don't like to leave small, family-owned businesses bad Yelp reviews. Really, I don't. But this place just doesn't seem to listen to its customers... so here goes. I had to hit the Post Office so went here to grab a quick bite. I don't remember it being anything special on a previous visit but thought I'd give the place another try since I didn't feel like cooking and had never been here at night. I ordered a steak quesadilla which came with chips/salsa. The chips were average but the salsa tasted like it had come right out of a jar. I make a really good salsa so I was not impressed with what they served. It's not that hard El Sol! I asked for the quesadilla to be spicy but it came to me bland and boring. The meat was chewy and it was covered with globs of sour cream and diced tomatoes. It tasted like something you might get from the frozen food section of your local grocery store. Cardboard. The waitress was friendly and nice (hence the 2 stars) but the food was, em, gulp, horrible. I was starving so I managed to eat it but I will never go back. How places like this stay in business is beyond me. I should have checked Yelp before dining here. In short, this white boy can make some killer (and spicy) fresh Mexican food... so next time I'll just bite the bullet and make it myself at home. El Sol owners, PLEASE listen to the feedback here. The food was ok and the prices were reasonable. We tried a fish taco, a prawn taco, a quesadilla, and guacamole, plus a can of coke for about $20. After we paid for our food, we sat down at a nice table close to the sunnier front of the restaurant and began eating our guac and chips. A staff member asked us to move to a different table. We demurred, saying that we would rather not sit in the back where it was dark. She returned with a manager who INSISTED that we move. My friend and I felt like we were being scolded for being bad kids, when in fact we were just looking for a locally owned restaurant to give some business to. The table we vacated remained empty until we finished our meal, so I'm not really sure what the point of making us move was. I doubt we will be returning. The staff and owners could benefit from some customer service training. Or at least they should put signs on tables that they don't want customers to use. read more

The food and service were great. Very clean restaurant and I'm happy to have a Mexican restaurant in Point Richmond. It was me, the hubby, and the two teen brothers walking through the farmer's market and decided to catch an early dinner. I was worried we wouldn't be done in time to make it back to the Farmer's Market (outside the restaurant) in time to buy produce/pastries etc. We were seated right away, the place was full and yet we were able to put our orders in right away as well. We got: 1 Super Chicken Burrito with guac 1 Chicken quesadilla 1 Super Chicken Burrito's with guac (Wet style? it had mole red sauce on top with melted cheese) hubby love it and for me 1 Super shrimp burrito with black beans and guac. (Guac wasnt included in the super burritos) All the food was lovely, and the burritos weren't to small or too big so we ended up with the right portions for everyone. The salsa was super spicy hot but was still nice to have with the chips. The shrimp burrito was good because the shrimp was not overcooked and didn't have that chewy texture which was great since so many people get shrimp burritos wrong. The prices were pretty fair too and we made it back to the Farmer's Market with enough time to shop so I'm happy about the timing. It's always surprising to me when a Mexican restaurant can't prepare food as good as a taco truck. I had a Carne Asada "Super" burrito that basically came wrapped in foil as you would expect in a togo order. Unwrapping it was my first clue of the quality. Grill char "mystery bits" left on the flour tortilla was a good sign their grill probably wasn't cleaned anytime recently. The ingredients inside were as generic and non "super" as I feared. Overcooked "Spanish" rice (ie. Cooked with water and tomato?) No flavor detectable... Pinto beans, might as well have been left out. Chalky is the best description I could give to them. The Carne which is usually a slightly better cut of meat then the standard grissle tasted like it came from a freezer to the flat top with little if any seasoning. I guess the "super" in this burrito came from the sour cream? Table service is almost non existent. Refills? No way. It would seem the owner is of some ethnic decent. I'm not sure if she is Mexican though. She WAS friendly and I have to say the place looks the part with very nice hardwood tables and chairs. Very nice artwork as well. But I didn't come here for their art collection. Just a decent burrito. I didn't get that and don't expect a return. read more

This place is a breeze of fresh air in the Point. From a town that has two Chinese, one Thai and countless bars and delis, Mexican food is a welcome change. I've tried the chicken enchilada, a burrito and the Chalupa (some might call it the tostada salad)...all were very good. Most of the staff is family and Josephine puts her heart and soul into her cooking, which you can feel walking in the door and taste in the food. It's fun to watch her make the chile rellenos from scratch. She takes her time and makes sure everyone is taken care of. read more

I've been coming here for over 10 years and was surprised to find this new-owner version of Annie's getting so many poor grades (which Annie's got some of as well). I ordered a regular chicken burrito and a drink. The place was empty. I was politely told that I shouldn't sit at the window counter by the door as this was for folks waiting for their take-out orders. I sat there anyway, my favorite seat in the place when I'm alone. The burrito was the best I've ever eaten, no exaggeration. The tortilla was toasted on a grill and everything was pretty tasty. Very mild which I altered by adding some of my salsa from the bowl of chips. I would have given 5-stars if it weren't for the loud Spanish radio station dramatic announcer droning on, and being told that I couldn't sit at the window. read more

Richmond) and Louie's Deli was too crowded, so we came here cuz it was right next door and my time for lunch is limited. BIG mistake! The server was nice, but not server material...But the food.... The FOOD! Please stop calling yourself a Mexican Restaurant. It just ain't right! And you're serving stale chips. What the hell?! Even the flour chips in my nachos were stale. The beans are not home made, the meat was tasteless. Man! Ya'll need to step up your game for sure. Even my 5 year old, the salsa connoisseur, said mommy this salsa tastes bad. :( I feel bad that I subjected my family to that. Never again! UPDATE: I gave this place another chance because, again, I really want to like them. Also, their outward appearance would suggest that they're trying to step up their game since El Taco Feliz is stealing a good bit of their business. I sorely regret the second chance I gave them. Even the service I received (from some skinny younger girl who I had never seen in there before) was rude and awkward, I didn't feel welcomed at all. Her coworker (the daughter of the owners) seemed to sense this and did her best to be courteous. I got a carne asada super burrito and a soda and paid $11 for the meal. Okay. Got home ready to devour my food and the only way I can describe it is "mush". Seriously. Scant meat, mushy rice, mushy burrito all around. I probably ate1/3 of it before I trashed it. When you order a plate of carne asada, you're supposed to get a whole piece of carne asada steak, along with the usual beans, rice, and tortillas. Especially for about $12. Not at El Sol. We were served small portions of under-seasoned carne asada *strips* that were tough and had a tepid temperature. (So much for grilled -- which is what "asada" means.) There is one nice person working here (the owner?), but I was also turned away before closing by one of the workers--just didn't want a customer that late (so change the hours). Sorry, but the food is not that good. I know that many have spoken of "authentic" and "breath of fresh air", but, one problem with the world these days is there are so many self-defined "experts"; I have eaten in scores of Mex places in San Diego, and regionally they are barely a 6 out of a 10. Try TX, NM, or CO for better. Att least there are enough unsophisticated customers to keep them in business. Pt Richmond gets what it deserves, and the remark about taco trucks having better offerings is pretty true--demand more! read more

I have a hard time writing this because I actually like this place and have had good experiences until now. Today there was hair cooked in my food. It was wrapped around my shrimp. I have officially never had a worse burritto in my life, and the fajitas were a pile of muck in oil. I've visited brightly lit sterile corporate Mexican restaurants, and guess what - there, at least momentarily, the food tasted delicious ...not the case at El Sol.
