This restaurant serves one of the best Vietnamese dishes I've ever had. The pho was top notch and surprisingly tasteful and different. The wings were amazing and drinks good too. There were a few dishes that ended up being okay but the pho was what I was here for. The Bo Luc Lac wasn't what I was expecting and was pretty dry for being the priciest meal. The Bun Bo Hui was decent but that's probably because it was vegan and I'm more of a meat guy. One thing I'd suggest fixing is the order in which the meals and drinks came out. We ordered appetizers, entres, and drinks. The entres came out first way before the appetizers did. Oddly, the drinks all came out last when we were already done with the entres. read more

We ordered Pho and they were kind of thrown on the table with a loud noise. Excellent and reasonably priced new addition to the Dumbo restaurant scene. The food and drinks were prepared with the attention to detail that makes eating fun. The chicken wings were really flavorful. We tried 2 kinds of clams, for me the butter clams were the hands down winner, they were fantastic, The sauce was so good I kept it to put on my vermicelli that was served with the pork chop (succulent). Our last dish was the Hu Tieu Kho, a dry version of their signature dish with minced pork, shrimp, fish balls, quail egg, chives, scallion, fried garlic and chicharrón. When moistened with the soup that came on the side this dish came to life. The quail egg which was soft boiled and marinated was silky with a bunch of subtle flavors, it may have been the best bite of the entire meal. Normally I don't order non-alcoholic drinks, but they're still waiting on their liquor license so we tried their Pineapple Express (drink) a surprisingly refreshing pineapple juice slushy with mint and lime. And a shockingly fabulous smoothie made with avocado and condensed milk appropriately called the Green Dream. Together with a very pleasant and accommodating staff and a lovely walk around Dumbo this made for a terrific evening vacation out of Manhattan that I would certainly recommend. read more

Ordered take out from here, very much like life itself, it was filled with hits and misses. Hits: the grilled pork sandwich was delicious as the meat was nicely charred! Fried spring rolls also were good and came with all the right necessities (lettuce, pickled carrots and dipping sauce). The restaurant is clean and staff is nice and made me feel very welcomed. Em Vietnamese Bistro provides a great option for Vietnamese food right in the heart of Dumbo. After taking a stroll along the Brooklyn Bridge Park you can head right to Front Street and grab a solid bowl of pho. I got the Pho Bo which included the most tender and flavorful pieces of beef I've ever had served in pho. The broth provided a deep and rich flavor profile that tasted like it took hours and hours to develop. I also tried the spring rolls which were pretty good but not the best rendition of the dish that I've had. The service was friendly and they checked in on us the perfect amount of times. Note that the prices are Dumbo prices and are definitely more expensive than your typical Chinatown eatery but that is to be expected. I for sure will be returning to Em Vietnamese Bistro when I am in the area and need my Vietnamese fix. I can't wait to try the butter clams which I hear must try here. read more

Pho sure you should try the Pho. It's pretty good, standard Pho. The thinly shaved meats were reasonably tender. My coworker got a Banh Mi sandwich, which he *swore* he enjoyed but also only ate half of and left the other half at my other coworkers place. The restaurant week menu also looked intriguing, but if you just want a nice, hearty bowl of pho, just go for that. read more

Excellent new restaurant serving up Vietnamese food in DUMBO. I ordered the Pho Ga and it is the best chicken pho I've had! The flavor of the broth is savory and the chicken and noodles are cooked just right. I enjoyed dipping pieces of chicken into the side sauce for an extra kick. Me and my husband were in NYC for the weekend, and decided to walk the Brooklyn Bridge & half way there decided to grab something to eat in Brooklyn. Searched on yelp for the closest place near us and Em was the 1st to pop up. This was my first time trying Vietnamese food and everything we ordered was AMAZING! We had Pho Bo (short rib beef noodle soup), the ly's chicken wings, the Thit Kho Tieu (braised pork belly) and I ordered the pineapple express drink, which was so refreshing for a hot day. Everything was 10/10. I totally forgot the name of our server but he was so nice, super attentive and I loved how he told us the story of the owner and his wife on how they opened up the restaurant. So we decided to visit this place given that there aren't lots of options around Dumbo and the pictures and reviews about the food and the place were decent. The food was good, we were a group of 5 people and we all liked our plates. Now, the place itself looked kind of dirty, our reservation was at 4:30pm so they had just open after the break and I guess they didn't have enough time to pick up a few napkins that were on the floor. But the part that REALLY bothered me was the service! Our server had this face the entire time like he didn't like us or he was having a bad day, we would ask him for anything and he would almost roll his eyes. They added a 20% tip to our check so I guess the server really didn't care to give us a good service because he knew about it. Would I go back? NO. I have left maybe 3 reviews in my life. This place was so good I had to leave one. The ambience is neat and unique -- with lovely photos. We tried non typical items on the menu and were blown away with each one. Highly recommend the pork belly appetizer and the dry noodle with soup entree. Our server, Randall, was so sweet. I ordered a coconut smoothie that I didn't like (too sweet for my palette) and he removed it from the check for us. All in all, great food and experience. Would highly recommend! read more

I'm Asian, and I'm pretty impressed. The service was AMAZING. Loved our waiter. Think his name is Chris. He was fast and attentive and offered great advice for our order. The food... was so flavorful and done so well, and arrived super fast (crucial when you have a 9 month old with you). The interior was super cute but we sat outside. They have a few outdoor tables. So glad Dumbo has a vietnamese option like this, esp during a time that its SO hard for restaurants to survive and even find help. When I first moved to New York almost 10 years ago, I was hard put to find good Vietnamese restaurants outside of a few blocks in Chinatown and deep Queens. It seems that since then, we've experienced a Renaissance of sorts of Vietnamese cuisine because now you can find stellar Vietnamese spot all over the city. Case in point is Em Vietnamese Bistro. Most of the menu items here should be familiar to any Vietnamese cuisine aficionado - pho, bahn mi and bun (rice vermicelli bowls). The pho bo, which is the classic beef pho, was fantastic - actual medium rare ribeye that slowly cooked in the piping hot broth, which was super flavorful and just loaded with scallions and cilantro (as broth should be), plus noodle that weren't overcooked. We also tried the dau hu chien, which is a great appetizer option for vegetarians. It consists of silken tofu that's deep fried (I've always loved that contrast between the crispiness of the breading and the soft interior) and served with perilla leaves and some secret green sauce. Based on my years of experience of dining out in New York, I can confidently say that you can never go wrong with "secret green sauces" because they tend to be spicy and addictingly delicious. The only blemish of our meal was the service. Unfortunately, we had a server who could not be more blase about his job and carried about his responsibilities as if he were ticking off a list. The food really is quite amazing though so there's definitely a return trip in the near future, just hopefully with a more engaged server. read more

I really liked Em and have ordered frequently from them since I live nearby. Today, I was however disappointed by the basil leaves that came with the pho. The basil was clearly going bad with large black patches and dots. Why isn't the restaurant doing a better job in ingredient quality? That's not really ok. read more

Vietnamese-American from California here! I grew up surrounded by the best Vietnamese food, having been in heavily Vietnamese neighborhoods my whole life. Em Vietnamese Bistro is the first and only Vietnamese restaurant in all of New York to make me feel homesick. While the exterior is unsuspecting and the wait staff is clearly not Vietnamese, let me assure you that the food and service are both phenomenal. We ordered the cha gio rolls, banh xeo crepe, and hu tieu kho dry noodles. Every dish tasted exactly how I wanted it to. It tasted just like what I had growing up and it really transported me back home. Even the ca phe sua da Vietnamese Iced Coffee was the best I've had (and I am a huge Vietnamese coffee snob). The food tasted fresh, full of flavor, and despite being called "tapas" on their menu, was fairly filling. The wait staff are so kind and friendly, and you can't beat the superb location near Dumbo. I can't recommend Em enough and I sincerely hope everyone gets a chance to try their delicious and AUTHENTIC food. read more

This spot is so freaking good! Food is ON POINT esp with the coconut mussels, vegan bun rieu, and beef pho. Beef was extra smooth and tender! Make sure to taste the broth, and taste it again AFTER moving the noodles and beef around for the deep bone broth flavor. Going back there for lunch again. Decor is so beautiful, spacious, and clean! Tried this place again after being very disappointed last time, and I'm sorry to say the same issue persists- the food is just too salty. We had the beef pho and the pork chop, and both were almost too salty to eat- like licking a salt lick. The unfortunate thing is, the pork chop actually had really good flavor underneath, and the beef in the pho was really tender. The Good: The pho broth is pretty good and I didn't taste MSG (or very little) which I really appreciate as I'm sensitive to MSG. The noodles were cooked perfectly with a slight chew. The usual accoutrements of sprouts, Thai basil, Jalapeño were fresh. The Bad: the portion size is small for the price. I don't mind paying $16 for good pho but there were 2 pieces of ribeye in the soup and the noodles were maybe 15% less than what I'm used to. For the same price in the lower east side, the portion of noodles and meat is more for comparable quality. With tax and tip that is over $20 for a small bowl of pho. Overall experience is 3.5 but I rounded up since Dumbo doesn't have the most exciting food and I do appreciate EM coming in to fill a void. If I'm in the area and need a quick nosh I'd likely come back. read more
