I'm not a beer drinker, but after checking out Emmett's fine-looking menu I decided to stop in for dinner after a haircut on Main Street tonight. Glad I did. Emmett's is more than just a pub. Half the place is indeed dedicated to the bar atmosphere: dimmer lighting, with smaller tables and, of course, the bar to belly up to, as well as the brewing equipment in the window. The other half of the building, however, is a restaurant proper: brighter lighting, larger tables, and table service. The room is a mix of sophistication (with cocoa-colored walls, curlicued chandeliers and dark wood accents) and rough-hewn accents, such as the unfinished ceiling beams. There wasn't anyone at the hostess stand so I hovered for a few minutes, not sure if it was a seat-yourself situation, but one of the waitresses came and took care of me after a moment. My waiter was a nice fellow, and I quickly figured out what I wanted: the first thing on the menu, Baked Pretzle Twists brushed with garlic butter and served with cheddar cheese spread, as well as a cup of corn chowder, and a root beer. The root beer arrived first, as drinks do; I kinda figured it might be home brewed, as it often is at these brewery places (Goose Island, Gordon Biersch, etc.), but if so there wasn't a lot of pomp and circumstance about it, and it wasn't mentioned on the menu. In any case, it was rather flat and also tasted rather sweet. So I hope it wasn't representative of their own product. The food was much better. The chowder was happily hot (oh how I hate to get a bowl of soup in a restaurant that is pathetically tepid!), and had the taste of fresh corn, the bracing flavor of peppers and the smoky essence of ham. The pretzles were nothing like your shopping-mall-Auntie-Whoever concoctions. Tightly twisted and burnished brown, they bore the kiss of garlic and salt. There was no need for the cheddar spread. Carboholics unite: this was a fabulous feast, though $9 seems a bit steep for 4 pieces of bread. Overall, good food in a nice setting; would be a suitable place to bring the beer connoisseur in your life. read more

For those of you have read my other reviews, you know I try to be fair and subjective regarding my reviews. I never give a bad review on a singular experience, that sort of thing. This was our second time there, the first was somewhat forgettable so we thought we'd try it again. It was busy on a Friday night at about 8, but not crazy busy. We ordered drinks and food pretty quickly, and my first clue that our waitress was not very professional was when she wrote our food order on a cocktail napkin. No kidding-we waited 50 minutes for our dinners. Really? A salad and their all you can eat Fish Fry??? A couple of excuses from our waitress as table after table around us were seated, got their food, ate and left. Finally we asked for a manager and she said she would check on it real quick and after 5 or so minutes, out comes the food. The food wasn't bad but when it takes that long, really, who the heck cares? The one that really got my husband is they seated a very large party near us so the chairs were right up against us, and the waitress at that table kept plowing into my husband with not word one of an apology. BUT, the manager took the beers off the tab since we waited so long. I was impressed that she even knew that we had waited. I am going to do my best to point out both the good and bad. Let me start with the good, because I don't want to forget the good points. They have a parking lot out back in case you can not find street parking on Main. Their restrooms are pretty nicely maintained. And the overall interior of the bar/restaurant is clean and very comfortable. The hard wood and dark tile make this place very relaxing and probably a good after work hang out for the locals. Now, sadly, I have to let you know the crappy stuff. When we got here, I went right to the washroom. My fiance and his sister grabbed a high top table in the center of the bar area and planted themselves so we had a place to sit. When I returned from the restroom, my fiance's sister had a beer in front of her and my fiance had a mixed drink in front of him with a bill sitting next to it. I asked, "why is there a bill? Can I order a drink?" At no fault of ours, the extremely unpleasant cocktail server dropped the bill with his drink, did not ask if we wanted to run a tab or if anyone else may want to order a drink that is joining them. Right when I sat down at the table, this woman walked up to my fiance, lifted up the bill for his drink and slapped it back down on the table and said, and I quote: "we can close that out now." WTF?!? Hello??? Do you not see me? Am I invisible?? Well, let me tell you. I ordered from the bar. Ran a tab with them and let them earn my tip. I was appalled by her behavior. Could not believe that she treated this in such a manner. My fiance, who rarely complains about anything, even was shocked. In no hurry to return. read more

After being treated very poorly by the Ballydoyle (see my review), we went across the street to Emmett's with a party of 11 and were seated right away. I forget the server's name, but she was the best. We had four kids with us and she was great. We had the brussel sprout bruschetta and it was outstanding. We also grabbed nacho apps which were very good. Everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the caprese turkey burger and its was fantastic. The bison burger looked great as well. Overall a great user experience for all. I would like to see a gluten free option for a meal and a beer. I usually don't go to Emmet's but I will start going more now. read more

Emmett's is in downtown Downers Grove with on-site microbrewery. It is upscale, but not too trendy. The menu is on-line, please check it out. I've tried the Reuben, mustard dill salmon and the grilled chicken bruschetta which were all very good. Although Emmett's does have a fully stocked bar--go for the beer. You can get a sampler pallet--2 oz. of 5 beers, if you don't know what you want. They do have some seasonal stock which means you can be in for a delightful surprise! read more

The environment was decent but the food was not too impressive. They did have a separate room for the event so kids got to meet the Santa and took the pictures as well. We sat in the lobby and ordered lunch. The Seared Tuna was an disappointment. Tuna was not in the best condition so they kind of over-grilled it. It was dry and had no taste. The side salad was fine but only have two-three bits of shredded cabbage. Fried fish fillet with fries was fine except it had too much breading and too much grease. The service was fine. They was too busy with all the tables filled up with young kids and their family. It took a bit time to get a menu and then get the food. I hope you could have or had a better experience there. I hadn't been here since it was Founders Hill (or Founders-as I enter middle age hood, I tend to add words to titles) many years ago. We went on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and there were mixed reviews within our group. It's a nice, cozy place and the bar area is well set up with TV's, high tops and plenty of bar stools. We didn't have any drinks, so will likely update this review down the road when I do. Good service overall and the food items were either very good, or in some instances, subpar. The ale cheese soup was a hit, as were the soft pretzels, which came with a honey mustard sauce and horseradish cheese spread. My wife's Reuben, son's shrimp boursin pasta, and dad's rigatoni pasta were well liked, as were the homemade chips. Two of us ordered tacos-my ahi tuna ones were o.k.-the fish was good, and I like that they offered corn or flour tortillas (always corn for me!) but overall, they were dry-recalled reading about a chipotle or similar flavored sauce, which wasn't there. My mom's steak tacos were a disaster-there was almost no edible meat present. The server and manager were understanding and handled the situation well. Overall, pretty good place. Next time I'll try some of their beer(s) and venture within the menu for food. read more

My boyfriend and I have gone here several times and we will keep going back. It's a nice bar with pretty good food and great drinks but the prices are a little high for the food. The bar staff is really friendly and they even remember us from coming in. :) We are considering joining the beer club which comes with some nice perks. I was very happy and full from the Cobb salad I ordered and my boyfriend ordered the roasted rack of pork and he enjoyed that. So overall I personally give Emmett's a two thumbs up! WOOHOO read more

In the hub of downtown Downers Grove lies Emmett's Brewing. A true bar / restaurant with ample space for friends, family, parties, etc... A seemingly appropriate sized menu to choose from; not so large that you cannot decide but not so small that you are limited to your decisions. Good beer selection and a well put together drink selection. The burger is the way to go when visiting here. Not to say you cannot try anything else, but they are about their burgers (actual quote from waitress). Cooked to order burgers with a nice selection of sides and even a decent dessert menu (carrot cake was carrotty and the creme brulee was flamed nicely). Best time to visit here is during the summer/fall months while the car show goes on downtown. Come here for a drink and meal and then walk it off looking at a lot of nice classic autos. Too inconsistent and won't be going back! Make a commitment, post a couple signs- either dogs are allowed or not! I've been on your patio many times with a very small dog with no issues- then on at least two occasions (tonight being the last) after being seated told "no dogs allowed" and had to leave. It's never fun being called out in front of others- especially when the manager has told me in the past, dogs are allowed. I'm surprised in today's environment you want reasons to turn down customers. There are plenty of other choices downtown that are welcoming and amenable, maybe your just not local enough. I would think people who are out walking, including dog in tow, are your locals, hmmm must not be in your business plan. For the non-dog lovers, in general, I find Emmett's to be just an average pub- food, drinks and service- all of it- a bit of hit or miss. read more

On a Friday night, my friend and I decided to grab dinner here while exploring Downtown DG. There wasn't a table for us so we killed time at the bar with a beer in hand until our table was ready. Service was a bit slow. It was a full house and it took awhile for the waiter for get our orders. I ordered the firestarter burger and the burger was decent, nothing out of the ordinary but since I was so hungry, I inhaled it pretty fast. The burger was pretty big and I had about 1/4 left of the burger and I couldn't finish it anymore. Overall, this is a good place for a big group to enjoy burgers and beer. Lots of brew pubs are offering "beer pairing dinners" now, but Emmett's in Downers Grove (formerly Founder's Hill Brewery) seems to have perfected them down to a science. We signed up for Emmett's annual Spring Brewmaster Dinner on April 18, a five-course menu chosen by the chef (not available on the regular menu), served with different varieties of Emmett's brews specially chosen to complement each course. After an on-the-house beer and a tour of the small but busy brewery by Brewmaster Rob Hunter, we enjoyed: * An appetizer of thin slices of pan-seared duck breast (nice and rare) served with orange-cranberry chutney and a tabbouleh patty of roasted tomato quinoa topped with black-peppered goat cheese, paired with Emmett's Belgian Abbey Ale. Nice balance of sweet and smoky flavors. * A lobster and arugula salad with slivered jicama, served with a hoppy Citra IPA to complement the tartness of the lemon thyme dressing. * For a palate-cleanser, a scoop of sorbet flavored with Apple Pucker schnapps, garnished with a slice of green apple and a drizzle of caramel (could have used A LOT more caramel!) * An entrée of rosemary roasted lamb chops in a basil pesto demi glace, served with candied baby carrots and purple potato puree garnished with a leaf of fried basil, paired with a hearty, malty Dopplebock. (This was my first taste of purple potatoes. Yum. Gotta find me some of those in my grocery store.) * A Chocolate Bananas Foster dessert of caramelized bananas and chocolate ice cream garnished with mint leaves on top of a slice of vanilla pound cake, washed down with a chocolatey Java Stout. (This dessert was a little heavy on the chocolate and a little light on the bananas, but no complaints from me since I'm a chocolate lover.) What I liked the most about this dinner, aside from the great cooking and beer choices, was that the portion sizes were just right. We left pleasantly satisfied, but not so overstuffed that we couldn't enjoy a few more after-dinner beers. The only thing keeping me from giving this dinner five stars was the price -- $60 per person. While this is not overly-expensive by any means, it's still $20 more than the beer pairing dinners we've had at Tribes Alehouse in Mokena, with the same number of courses and much bigger portion sizes. Since we also signed up for Emmett's Beer Club, however, which gives us a 10% discount on future Brewmaster Dinners (along with free lunches on your birthday and a special Beer Club mug every time you visit), it's not a bad deal at all! read more

Update: the general manager contacted me extremely apologetic and seemed to truly care about my experience and inquired in depth about the mishaps I experienced. To me that is a sign of a good business. It seems I had an abnormally bad experience. I will continue to keep Emmett's in my normal rotation of places to frequent in downtown Downers I really want to like this place but as far as food is concerned I would not recommend. I've come multiple times and the food options always sound good but the execution is lacking. Last night my date and I ordered the pretzel twists and the margherita flatbread. The pretzel twists were lukewarm and rock hard. My date and I were actually joking about who would be responsible for the dentist bill of our cracked teeth. The honey mustard dipping sauce that came with it was actually making my eyes water to where I almost cried a tear. Then the other dipping sauce we were given was butter? Very strange. The flatbread was edible but nothing to write home about. I have been here multiple times and always hope I just had a bad experience but I am disappointed every time:( As far as a place to drink I like it. I met my new manager here for lunch and my nostrils were assaulted by the "hoppy" smell upon entering. I understand that they have their own brewery here but I don't remember Goose Island ever having such a pungent odor. I had the French dip sammich with sweet potato fries - the fries were delicious but the beef was pretty dry and the au jus was wayyy too salty. I will definitely come back here though and try some of the other signature dishes on the menu because I think I just ordered the wrong thing and I would love to try some of their house beers as well. read more

Disclaimer: I worked at the Emmett's Oswego location in 2006, and while I loved the people and food, and the overall company is great, I feel that was long enough ago to review. Also, my review is mostly based on the 11/21/2013 Brew Master Dinner. I've eaten at Emmett's many times before, but never felt compelled to review. Then, I took my boyfriend to the Brew Master dinner in Nov 2013 for his birthday, and that changed. The brewery tour was nice, and while I know a bit about brewing, I found it informative. The beer pairings were well done, and the explanations by both brew master & chef were useful and clear. The tops of this meal, though? The food. WOW, was it good. Flavor profiles melded throughout, nothing was harsh nor overbearing, and I was left satiated but wanting more (because it was good) after each course. If you have a chance, get to one of these dinners - they happen a few times a year. GO. read more

Had the lettuce wrap for an appetizer and the chicken was great as well as the peanut sauce. I would recommend this to start as it is light but very taste. Had the baby back ribs and they fell off the bone and where fantastic. Had the cream of mushroom soup instead of the salad and was very pleased I chose that option. I hosted my boyfriend's 30th birthday party here. Kirsten, their event coordinator, was very helpful with answering any questions I had. My boyfriend and his friends play live music, and we asked if they could bring their own instruments and play through out the party. It's great that Emmett's could accommodate to musicians! Their only "rule" is that the band could not start really rocking out until after 8pm, which is understandable. We opted for the cash bar option for our guests and our server for the night, Samantha, was so sweet and made sure she got all of our guests taken care of. Any time someone new walked in, Samantha was nearby and ready to take an order. We also ordered appetizers for our party and had chicken wings, corn beef sandwiches and cheese quesadillas. They were very good and and the guests were eating them right up. We brought our own cake, but for $1 a person, Emmett's staff cut the cake and served it for us. I would highly recommend Emmett's for any type of event. My boyfriend had such a fun time with all of his friends and family in our own private room, and the fact they allowed the band really sold us. For a very affordable price, Emmett's was well worth it. We even had balloons everywhere and the staff told us not to worry about it, they will clean up for us. 5 star experience! read more

I am a huge fan of wings (and brew pubs). I went here with a friend after work and got a very good heavy stout. While there, I learned that they had a $0.50 wing night on Wednesday. Given my positive initial experience, I had to come back. We decided to come back to watch the NHL playoffs. The atmosphere was great: lots of TV's, friendly staff, and great food. On Wednesday, they have $0.50 wings as long as you buy a drink and buy 12 wings. They have daily $4 specials of their freshly brew that varies by the day. I got a McCarthy Red, which was fantastic and went well with the wings. The wings (see photo) were as big as I've gotten and they were very meaty. There was just enough sauce and the sauces were great: I got bourbon, a peanut sauce (I think), and hot sauce. Since I went with my buddies, I traded to get their BBQ sauce too, which was equally impressive. These are some of the best wings I've had, which is saying a lot. $0.50 a piece is a great deal (although, you have to buy a drink). The atmosphere was lovely. Lots of great TVs playing all sorts of games. During the course of the evening, we saw the Heat Boston game, our hockey game, the US vs Brazil soccer match, and the Sox and Cubs games. The atmosphere had some kids and many older adults, which allowed us to enjoy the game. All of us had a great time: great beer, great food, nice atmosphere. We will definitely be back! read more

Came in here the other night with a party of about twenty and it was a great experience! They sat us right away and service was very quick and they checked on us many times. For beer I had a beekeeper and worked end. Both good beers. They have lots of different kinds to try and I hope to get back soon for more. For an appetizer I had the pretzel twists and they were a little over cooked and the only reason for my four stars instead of five. I just wanted to spread the word of our terrible experience at Emmett's tonight. I've loved Emmett's for years, we have been regulars, we've brought our families there, our out of town friends etc. But this is no longer A FAMILY FRIENDLY ESTABLISHMENT. At 6pm tonight (HALLOWEEN) we were told our kids were being too rambunctious. They sat at our table 99% of the time, laughing, sifting through candy, coloring. Etc. We had one brief incident where my 1 year old hit his mouth and cried for ONE minute. At one point my husband played the ghostbusters theme song on his phone and the kids danced in the empty aisle by our table. AGAIN it is Halloween at 6pm, there were less than 10 people in the whole bar, rambunctious? Give me a break. We've taken our kids to probably every restaurant in a ten mile radius, white tablecloth restaurants downtown and have NEVER heard this garbage before, and I can promise you our kids were FAR from rambunctious. This led to the moms having to pack up the kids to leave when we could have enjoyed another glass of wine. So needless to say I'm pissed. We just so happened to be at Pierce Tavern earlier in the day for lunch, where our kids also danced a little in the empty aisle and managers, owners , wait staff etc. were coming over to take pictures of them. Now gee I wonder why NO ONE is at emmets anymore? Is this anyway to treat your REGULAR customers? Yet another reason why that bar is empty, literally no one there, while Pierce is seating dozens of families with a wait out the door. They advertise themselves as family friendly with their kids menu and 1/2 off kids meals on sundays, but it seriously seems as if their manager does not want kids around. If kids can't just talk and laugh on a Thursday night at 6pm, you seriously want people to believe they're welcome there on a football Sunday? If you're thinking of taking your kids there I would stop and rethink. read more

Took 1/2 hour to get our food (they forgot our appetizers), we never saw our server, when food finally arrived the burger was under cooked and food was bland, later found a booger on booth seat. Never gave us utensils, or napkins, I ate part of my food with tooth pick from my burger. We requested sugar for our tea twice and our original server never came back (till the end to give us the bill). A different waitress finally brought food.. Manager must be busy cause she took over 10 min to show up when we requested to see her and all that solved was at least getting our bill in a timely manner, unfortunately not willing to give this place a 2nd chance, probably worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant, cares more about drinks at the bar then restaurant patrons. read more

The Munich Light is a delicious beer! Light but flavorful. I had high expectations after going to Germany and having those beers since the word Munich is in the title and it did not disappoint. To start, we had the pretzels and potato skins. The potato skins could've had more sour cream in my opinion since I love a lot with mine. Both dipping sauces with the pretzels were good. I alternated each time I went to take a bite. For dinner, I ordered the firestarted burger and it was spicy! Sometimes I find burgers like that to not be very spicy but this one was and I loved it. The absolute worst ever... let's start with ordering drinks, a water, didn't show up, had to ask for it after 20 minutes. Then let's move onto serving us the wrong food, oops. Then let's serve the correct meal, pretzel sticks as hard as a rock, a salad to share with a filthy, I mean filthy plate! She finally shows up and I explain to her the whole circus act and she says " let me see what I can do with the bill"... she disappears and comes back with the bills and says " I took the pretzel rock appetizer off."
