We got food and we couldn't finish it at all, thats not the bad part, we told the lady if we can get boxes to take our food home, she took our plates which we thought it weird. But now we know why.. she put these BIG plates of food into little containers into a big tall brown bag, and we noticed when we got home that more than half of our food is missing. they make decent cantonese food here bt you got to special order it. i was really scared to eat here when i sat down and noticed i was the only chinese person in this packed place and they offered chop suey and egg foo young on the menu! looked like everyone was gobbling down the food with good cheer though. but the staff was friendlier than average chinatown and they were willing to make stuff not on the menu. they make a really good sauteed watercress. the chilean seabass dish is pretty good too. i liked the portraits of the various emperors on the walls but thought they should've been more grand looking. they looked more like portraits of imperial ministers rather than the actual emperors. read more

This is my second review of this restaurant, but my first review of the current, new mmanagement. The newer, intended to be hipper, decor actually took the whole romantic notion of a Chinatown restaurant away. It now has an "awkward" vibe; a kind of an identity crises, if you will. The food might be the same as before on the most part, but it doesn't "taste" as good because the atmosphere doesn't quite fit the food and the mood. They also raised the prices, which causes you to be more critical. This used to be our go-to, nice-dinner, special occasion, take-your-time-and-enjoy-it kind of place even you did already pay more than your average Chinatown restaurant prices. And it used to remind me of the same kind of nostalgic, old school（in a very good way）experiences you'd get from places like the Palmer House, or Marshall Field's. Now, it's ordinary at best and has totally lost its original charms. You used to also feel they'd take good care of you when you dined there, that's gone too. What a shame! read more

My fiancé and I ordered from this restaurant last week. I have been trying various Chinese places in the city to find a great one! To me, the food had highs and lows. We had the crab Rangoon which I thought were really good. The pork lo mein was also excellent. You could tell the veggies were really fresh. The General Tso chicken was not quite what I expected, the sauce was very thin, but the chicken itself was good. The dumplings were very doughy. At first, I thought the food was kind of expensive, but you do get a lot, we had dinner for two people for two nights. I would recommend ordering food from here, but may skip the general tsos and try another entree next time. Also be prepared for a bit higher price. read more

First time being here it's a small but comfortable place to eat. Food was great with good distinct flavors, we ordered com pow chicken and Lo Mein chicken. Plates are usually one size and they are a pretty decent size plate for two or three people. We had to take our left overs to go. Place is a little pricy on some things but it's well worth the money, average plates are $10 and up. I guess I really don't go to Chinatown as frequently as I thought, because the restaurant that I've always visited (to be honest, it was the first place I went and I never felt like I needed to try anywhere new) was closed, and the people in a nearby store said that it had been closed for a while. Really sad. So I was hungry and felt that if emperors would choose a place, it's good enough for a pleb like me. It was okay. I think I've heard people talk about Emperor's Choice as being awesome, and they have good reviews in the window, but I didn't think it was that great. My food was alright while I ate it, but as I was walking with my leftovers later, I couldn't stop wondering who was farting, if it was that old woman next to me who smelled so bad, and, later, if I was somehow shooting off silent-but-deadlies so silent I didn't even know. Then I realized it was my food. It seriously smelled really bad. I don't know. Yuck. My companion also felt that her food was less than awesome, and said that the meat was overcooked and too tender. I don't think that that's really a problem, but I guess for her it was. Different tastes. Anyway, I wouldn't discourage anyone from going there, and I think a lot of other people like it (we were there at a very non-peak meal time and the dining room was probably around half-capacity), but I think that next time I head to Chinatown I'll go somewhere else. read more

Although I was born & raised in Chicago, I haven't eaten here in over 20 years, I have too many friends that own restaurants in Chinatown that are my usual stops. A friend mentioned that Emperor's Choice had changed hands & the food was very good, so we dined there tonight. The food was excellent, we only ordered the authentic Chinese dishes & found it to genuine & high quality. The salt and pepper seasoning is great and exactly what I hoped. It is not spicy as listed which was actually perfect. The lo mein was also delish and the serving size was large. This is the worst Chinese food I have ever in my life tasted. My boyfriend and I ordered the fried shrimp appetizer, veggie dumplings, sweet and sour chicken, and general tso chicken. The fried shrimp was soaked in complete oil. Although the batter tasted good it was only because of how much oil was left inside of it. I can literally taste the grease all around my lips after each bite. I was extremely disappointed with their veggie dumplings. They were completely dried out and just stuck to each other and on the cabbage. As I tried to take a piece, it kept on falling apart. Both of the chicken dishes were extremely disappointing. The chicken tasted completely dried out and had a taste as if it had been reheated. I'm not sure if we came on a day where the chef was lazy but I would never return to this place. It was just a total fail and I wish I could have had a good food experience in China town but that wasn't the case. Either these reviewers don't know what good Chinese food is or we just came on a wrong day. I feel bad for giving this place one star because the service was good and our server was really nice so I had to add an extra star. As far as the food goes I would rate it one star.
