They need to update their hours on Yelp... Epoch *was* one of literally two 24 hour coffeehouses in Austin (and the other, Bennu, is nowhere near as good). Sadly that seems to no longer be the case. We were at their single 24 hour location on North Loop Tuesday night when they abruptly announced to the full store that they were closing in ten minutes at midnight. If you check their hours on Google it now says closes at midnight so it doesn't seem to be a one night exception like I was hoping womp womp. I still love Epoch but we are late late night regulars so this is a blow. I don't know why it's so hard for Austin to have 24 hour spots considering its size and number of students and other young people who would be inclined to frequent them. Now it's just Bennu and while we go there a lot out of necessity their ambiance, food/beverages, and customer service fall far short compared to Epoch. read more

Decent coffee here at Epoch which is located smack in the middle of a neighborhood. How convenient for all their neighbors! I've driven by this neighborhood coffee shop a number of times and have been curious to try them out. The theme they're going for, I think, may be Thrift store in the mid-1980's meets modern hipster baristas. Old furniture and fixtures throughout. But that helps give the place its cozy, worn, neighborhood feel. Kind of like going to your grandma's house. She's had her furniture for years and it's what you've grown up knowing. Yeah, kinda like that. Insert Head nodding here. So I tried their Bagel Dog which cost me $4.50. The dog was a decent polish-type sausage but the toasted bagel was quite tough. Meh. I think I'll skip it next time if I return. It was a good try though. I forget what the barista recommended for the coffee, but I agreed to it and my total for the caffeine and dog was just short $11. read more

SMELLS LIKE GEN-X SPIRIT When the old Mojo's on Guadalupe folded ca. 2006, three baristas from there opened a coffee shop in a disused Laundromat--Epoch on North Loop. They brought the Gen-X spirit of 'whatever' and a louche approach to service with them: here the server is in charge of the transaction and of the vibe of the place, the customer be damned. Read all the one-star reviews: it's always some disaffected older barista who bears his teeth at you if you don't tip adequately in his view, and throws your coffee or your card at you. If the coffee here were really stellar, it might be worth it, but...it's not. The question here is 'how much caffeine do you want with your sugar?' They don't offer a selection of dark chocolates to go with their coffee as they invariably do in Italy and most of Europe, or Turkish coffee, or New Orleans-style chicory coffee, or French press coffee, or Italian Moka pot coffee: which brings us to their 'espresso'. The espresso here (which is what I usually prefer) is thin, acidic, and watery, and sometimes not even hot; and more expensive even than Starbucks' espresso, which is--I hate to say it--better than Epoch's. If you want acceptable espresso in Austin, this is not the place. Bennu and Caffe Medici have much better espresso, hot with a nice crema, made by people who have been trained to know what they're doing. Some times you might even get a smile out of them! The music here is barista's choice: usually loud enough to interfere with your work or your conversation. The place is dated in a grunge-inspired way, the way Mojo's used to be (not a good thing!). The place is dirty with really dirty bathrooms. It even smells funny. Could it be that it smells like...GEN-X SPIRIT? So be sure to wear flannel when you come in. And bring your earplugs! read more

One of my favorite coffee spots in the city. Each location has a unique style, but the drinks are consistently well made across each location. This is overall chill and quiet coffee shop good for meetings or working. I come here when I want to read or focus on work. If you're in a rush, I recommend arriving early, because it's usually busy and has a bit of a wait. read more

I have been going to epoch since 2010, and in the last few years, esp since Jessica was more present at North Loop to the present day, no coffee shop in Austin does more for the community. It is a welcoming space in a way that no other coffee shop is, which is clearly something reviewer Liz K does not understand as nobody "driving through texas" would go to this epoch location, it is far away from the highway and not near much food or things you would need while driving. Semi-bald fella with graying beard behind the counter was extremely rude and condescending and has no business being in a customer based industry. Going to this location for years, this is the first time I've been treated like this by any worker. Normally I would give this shop a 4* rating but because of this incident with this particular worker, have given a solid 1* . This place is always packed whenever I pass by this coffee shop. Went to meet up with some classmates here on a Sunday and parking was hard to find, tables were almost at full capacity even with the vast amount of seating they have (indoors and outdoors)! Their hazelnut latte was kind of a disappointment, more creamer than espresso. Saddening for any of y'all who are coffee lovers! Their pastries looked enticing and I had to snag one of their chocolate croissants. The pastry was fluffy and huge but after a few bites, I couldn't taste any hints or pieces of chocolate. I noticed as I got towards the center, only 2 pieces of chocolate appeared. For $4, you get more bread than decadent chocolate!! For a coffee shop, I like the hipster vibe and the amount of seating that is available. I probably wouldn't resort to this coffee joint first as the coffee/pastry didn't meet up to my expectations especially for the price! Checking out at least couple new coffee shops while in Austin was also on my to do list. Epoch was only about 10mins from where we were at, and stays open 24/7 made it the perfect pick. It took us a few minutes looking for a parking spot in their small lot. We gave up and decided to park on the street, ur best option. The coffee shop was packed at almost 11pm on a Thursday night, not too big of a surprise since it's not far from UT, swamped with night owls was completely understandable. We each got a hazelnut latte. I was a lil disappointed to see somewhat of crappy latte art on both, but the delicious, smooth latte made up for it, along with their delicious strawberry rhubarb pie, making my first experience with rhubarb pie a great one. We would have stayed here longer if the mosquitoes didn't like me too much and started munching on me. First coffee shop on my list for this Austin trip was a win and a success in my book, regardless of the disappointing latte art, I'm definitely looking forward to the next time coming back here! read more

Great place to study! Inside is spacious with lots of seating and tables. There's chargers everywhere and no password WiFi! Don't be dumb like me and not notice the extendable chargers that are attached to the ceilings. They pull down so you can charge your stuff even if you're sitting in the middle. Very cute interior with nice art on the wall. Not too noisy and has unisex bathrooms! As for the coffee I had the cappuccino as well as a chocolate chip cookie. The coffee was nice and strong and came fast. The baristas are also very nice! They have a small assortment of pastries like cookies, brownies, and muffins. We loved spending some time at this café. It was obvious that it's a local haunt. The coffee is very good, the table space is plentiful, and there are a lot of outlet extensions too - so, I can see why it's so popular. We shared a table, and it was delightful (as an East Coaster) to meet so many friendly locals willing to have a chat. Would definitely come again, and highly recommend. The first time our lips sipped on that coffee, we knew it wasn't just infatuation; it was meant to be, baby! Epoch Coffee is a quiet but cozy coffee shop open 24/7 (a dream come true if like us you like to stay up late!) They serve great espresso, latte, a killer mocha, soda, tea, delicious pies, pastries, bagels and East Side Pies pizza slices. They have a large indoor and outdoor space, free wi-fi access and lots of tables and chairs for all. Many people visit Epoch Coffee night and day to work or study on their laptops while sipping on a flavorful espresso. My husband and I usually go there to chitchat and relax, which seems to be counter-current to the local working-hard-with-my-coffee culture, but we feel welcome in the space nonetheless. I honestly have nothing negative to say about Epoch! The cafe and the restrooms are clean, the staff is nice, they're always open, and the food and drinks are good. Epoch is a great place to study, read, or just have coffee. The atmosphere is very relaxed. I came here with a friend to study and stayed here for plenty of hours. Pros: Great atmosphere, good location (close to campus), has plugs located through out the cafe, great selection of coffees and pastries (better than bennu in my opinion). On my first trip here I asked the cashier if she would recommend for a drink for me, I was looking for something cold and sweet, she suggested the Mojo (only available at Epoch) and even gave me a sample. It was the perfect blend between something coffee/mocha/sweet, I loved it and it is go to drink every time. The ice they use in the drinks is the perfect, it has a texture between shaved and crushed ice. They have a very nice selection of pastries, and I would have to recommend the cinnamon roll. It is the BEST cinnamon roll I have ever had, imagine a croissant with cinnamon sugar in-between its layers then rolled up, baked to perfection, topped with just the right amount of icing and then some. If you get the cinnamon roll be sure to ask them to heat it up or your experience will just not be the same. They also allow you to keep an open tab at the cashier as long as you give them your card to hold on as collateral, just make sure you close your tab before 24 hours or else they will charge a 10% tip on top of your tab. Cons: They keep their air condition on and running, this place is COLD, make sure you bring a jacket or your will end up freezing your pants off. (I love the cold, this place is even cold in my standards, but I like the cold, still bring a jacket). There is a smell in the restrooms that personally I have a hard time getting over. It smells, used and dirty, not to mention there is graffiti all over the walls, and not very stylish graffiti if I might add. Parking kinda sucks, but then again it sucks at almost every 24 hour place, on the upside I was able to find parking here a lot easier than at Bennu. Overall, this is my new goto study spot around UT and will be coming very often. read more

I like to support local business, but you would probably get friendlier treatment at Starbucks. I've been many times, leaving tips every time and the service is preferential. While there is a lot of space in this coffee shop the cozy coffee shop feel is not lost. Through the space there are several nook areas to sit and enjoy whatever you might be doing. The baristas are knowledgeable and very friendly with very little delay in service. The hot chocolate was extremely good and my son is a connoisseur. They have dairy and non dairy options for their coffees and a nice pastry display. We took home some coffee beans roasted by Onyx sold by epoch. Everything was reasonably priced and tasted great. This is by far my favorite cafe in the North Loop area. I used to live nearby, and before they moved up from the old MoJo's on Guadalupe, there weren't a lot of options in the area. Great coffee, great staff, awesome decor and comfortable chairs. Other reviewer comments about the staff are unwarranted, unless you are an entitled, self-important, demanding asswipe to them, and then I guess you get what you deserve. The outdoor spaces are shaded and ample. The decor and furniture create a comfortable vibe. Breakfast burritos and East Side Pies by the slice. As with much of Central Austin, a good mix of hipsters, old hippies, techies, artsy folks, musicians, good tunes, and....me! (at least when I'm in the area, which is not often these days :( ). But I will have to say that of late there has been a noticeable increase in the quantity (if not quality) of student patrons. Take that as you will. read more

A latte art is fantastic, I had an oak milk latte each time that I went there and it was so perfect, but beyond that the staff are so energizing and sweet, I love the inclusive vibe that's clearly communicated throughout this place and I love that it's open until midnight. I'm always trying to knock out work later into the afternoon and it's so amazing to have a coffee shop that isn't going to close at 3 PM. This is a wonderful spot to be productive and knock some work out remotely, there's tons of seating an outlet plugs and just a very kind inclusive vibe from the staff as well as the customers.
