This place continues to delight. And there really isn't a better way of starting your evening that will be filled listening to the Philadelphia Orchestra by enjoying a beautiful meal at Estia before the concert. One can order off of the Theater menu (my recommendation is to order the lamb chops...they are delectable) enjoy delicious wine and cocktails and relax knowing Estia and the staff understand everything about serving delicious food in a relaxed dining room in order to get you to the theater on time. Steps from the Kimmel Center provides convenience without skipping luxury. Saki is an iconic figure at this place, so if you happen to be seated in his section your night got off to an even BETTER start. Estia is a Philadelphia establishment that shines in this great city. Service: Service was really thoughtful and fast. They gave us great recommendations on what to order and move our seats to accommodate our party. Food: I ordered from the Theatre Menu and got the Octopodi appetizer which came with capers and a red wine vinaigrette which made it a refreshing way to start my meal. Every time I eat at Estia I am glad I did - it never disappoints! We went tonight with a party of six and were seated in the right side of the restaurant and despite having a table of 20 seated near us, it was quiet enough for us to have a lovely, long conversation without it being hard to hear each other. The $40 prix fix theatre menu is the best deal in town, hands down. For only $40, you can choose from I think six different first courses, eight different entrees ranging from vegetarian to chicken to two different kinds of lamb, to fish, and one of three desserts. Our final bill for the six of us including ordering the Estia chips (a must have - deliciously light, crisp eggplant and zucchini chips with a side of tzadziki), fried calamari (also lightly battered with a marinara sauce, super yummy), cocktails and wine, coffee came to about $100 per couple. It's not hard to imagine that amount of high-quality food plus extra appetizers and drinks costing twice as much somewhere else. NOTE: This theatre menu option is NOT available at the Radnor suburban location which was a huge bummer, because it means it is, indeed, twice the price! I always debate between the lamb chops or fish of the day as my entree choice, and typically choose the horiatiki (just like we had in Greece, so fresh!) as my first course. And end with the baklava (at the whole big piece) and a cup of coffee. Tonight I opted for the Mediterranean sea bass prepared simply with olive oil and lemon juice and it was sensational. I didn't care as much for the cooked vegetable side and stole three of my husbands fries from his lamb chop selection (and had two bites of his lamb chops too). But I had polished off my horiatiki earlier so already had plenty of vegetables in my dinner. We went to Estia for restaurant week and came away super impressed. The food was all very good and the menu was pretty varied (we ordered from the theater menu) and the atmosphere was excellent as well. My lamb trahana and octopodi were both fantastic, though potentially smaller portions than other places. Will also add that the downstairs area (probably for events?) looked super cool and worth investigating - we checked it out after finishing the meal. Good spot! read more

Tasty Greek food. We visited Estia on a Saturday night, and the restaurant was about three-quarters full. Estia was loud with vaulted ceilings and lit candles placed at each table. I ordered the Greek old fashioned to drink, and we split the cheese saganaki, fried calamari, spanakopita, and salmon. Without asking, our dishes were served one at a time which was our preference. Before anything we ordered arrived, we were brought four slices of bread with a delicious hummus. The Greek old fashioned was decent, but I have had better. The cheese saganaki was served on fire and was perfectly done. The filling of the spanakopita had a great flavor, but the pastry was too thick. The fried calamari was paired with a delectable dipping sauce and the squid tasted fresh, but the breading left much to be desired. The salmon was perfectly cooked and was paired with a lovely sauce. Estia is a larger Greek restaurant right in Center City Philadelphia with a beautiful atmosphere, delicious food items, and attentive service. The space is well designed. They have separate spaces for the dining room, bar, wine cellar and event space downstairs. I liked the old elevator, too, and you can tell the building harkens back to an older time. We got the pre-fixe menu. I was most impressed with the dipping sauces and how complex the flavor was. That was the included appetizer. Even the complimentary bread came with fresh hummus. The waiter was able to explain everything in detail. The whole evening ran smoothly, and we were satisfied. We would go back. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because the place feels a little corporate to me. It certainly does not have the intimate feel of the family owned Greek restaurants I used to frequent in Greektown in Baltimore or actually in Greece. Estia's restaurant week menu is hard to resist. Year after year, it's pretty much the same but we are ok with that. I even ordered the same thing I ordered last time because I liked it so much. For our 1st course I had the grilled octopus, while my husband had the mussels. The portions for both were generous. The octopus was served cold and not as tender but I still enjoyed it. After trying some of my husband's mussels, I wish I ordered that instead! Well, I guess I'll have to come back for it another time. For our 2nd course, we both ordered the lamb chops. You just had to! The dish consisted of three (I repeat, three) large pieces of lamb chops, fries and tzatziki sauce. It was so much food and so delicious. For dessert this year, I thought I would switch it up and go for the Semolina Lemon cake which I don't normally go for. It was a mistake. The texture of the cake was coarse, not what I would have imagined a cake from Estia would be like. I didn't finish it. My husband stuck with our usual Baklava Rolls and shared his with me. The wine selection unfortunately was not extensive. With a large wine cellar downstairs, we expected to see a whole booklet for the wine list but were disappointed to see it was less than a page long. Overall, the lamb itself is worth coming back for every year, and Estia still remains one of my top choices for Restaurant Week. read more

When I bought tickets to a show at the Kimmel Center, I knew I had to make a reservation to finally check out Estia beforehand, it has been on my list for far too long. We arrived promptly for our 5:45 reservation and we were seated right away. Upon being greeted, our server asked if we had tickets to a show and asked what time we would like to be out by. As someone who stresses out about being late, I really appreciated this. She let us know that she would keep our timing in mind throughout the meal. We ordered the fried calamari and Estia chips to start. The chips were perfection! My boyfriend, who is not the most adventurous vegetable eater, was a big fan. He also enjoyed the calamari. We were also brought a delicious plate of bread and hummus, and I even dipped some of my chips into the hummus because it was too good not to finish. For our entrees, I had the lobster linguini and my boyfriend has the pasta a la grecca with chicken. Both dishes had the same red sauce that was both sweet and had the faintest kick. I felt my lobster was a bit overcooked, which was disappointing. We were finished and had the check back by 6:30 sharp. I was truly impressed with the prompt service that got us out of there in less than an hour, without making us feel rushed. My boyfriend and I got 2 theatre plates, and it was beyond disappointing. When we were sat, nobody came to our table for 20 minutes. When the waitress greeted us, she got the order completely wrong. She tried to serve us the same meatballs 3 times, until eventually they gave it to us compensated. The food is great, I especially loved the octopus. Estia in Center City Philadelphia has been slipping in quality for awhile now. The tomato salad was tasty but heavily salted. The next dish was the octopus which had a heavy smell of an unclean grill. After returning it, the next replacement dish was fine after the chef cleaned the grill surface. What a find! We stumbled onto what I believe was the best Greek food presentation I've had in ten years. The Greek Salad was perfect, with fabulous heirloom tomatoes. The Octopus was the best I have ever experience, instead of of being cut into coin shapes, it was sliced into longer this strips and was tender like butter. The medium rare wild caught halibut was off the charts. And the beautiful room even felt Greek, with low contoured ceilings. I cannot wait to go back there. read more

My wife and I have been to hundreds of restaurants around the country, and this location is the first place in 6 years where she and I both were made to feel uncomfortable by a staff member. The bartender Adam made passes at my wife, asking personal questions and only looking at her the entire time. Not only being unprofessional, but disrespectful to my wife and I. I'm used to my wife catching the eyes of people, but those people typically have a level of self control higher than that of a 14 year old at the height of puberty. I spoke to a manager about this after the fact and they said they would "talk to him" and couldn't have seemed less interested in what I had to say. I would suggest people avoid this location altogether. But if for some reason you find yourself here, at least avoid sitting at the bar. Restaurant week review! I've come here before and wasn't that impressed, but I loved my meal today! We tried one of each appetizer, ordered two of the bass and one lamb chop, and tried both desserts. They let us have the fish whole since we didn't want it deboned which was nice. The lamb was cooked very tender and not overdone! I really liked the greek salad appetizer, and the baklava. The of stone work and dim lighting really sets the mood. The restaurant week menu had a wide variety of choices. The hummus was for the table but was never cleared away the entire meal (kind of odd). The octopus was grilled, Smokey and delicious! The mussels had a sauce to die for! The sea bass was tastey but didn't come with any sides so it was a generous portion of fish but nothing else to enjoy. Finally got around to trying this place and went during restaurant week with my two girlfriends. The ambience of this place is wonderful!! As you walk in you feel like you are walking into Greece. (The only thing is the part we were sitting was a little too dark but otherwise the decor is great). Love the decor and everything. The service was outstanding as well. Our server was very attentive. Beautiful elegant Mediterranean restaurant. Got a full bar and lots and lots of seating area. Service was good and it was quite on a monday evening so it felt like we had our own intimate space. Great dinner date spot. Drink: the pomegranate margarita was so good. I think it was made beautifully. The Dionysus was also very good and refreshing since it was sparkling. Appetizer: The complementary bread with the hummus was so good! Hummus was so light it was almost whipped and so creamy and complemented the nice toasted bread. The crab cake is a must try! It's not like most crab cakes I had because this one sits in top of lentils and it was so addicting. The crabmeat tasted fresh and soft. Everything on that plate was polished gone. Calamari was soft and chewy. It was a massive portion so I think it was well worth every dollar on the appetizers. Main course: the lamb trahana didn't look like much but it was all in the flavors. The lamb was tender and it was in bit size so it blended in. Despite being so full we could not help ourselves to finish this as well. Dessert: Karidopita is a walnut cake that is spongy. What a great variety / unique dishes here! This is such a solid and consistently good restaurant. Staff here take their time to memorize the menu and are prepared for questions. Many people may not have had Greek food before and I think this restaurant does a good job of meshing the food and culture together in a way that people will not be intimidated by when they dine here! The restaurant has a old school charm to it with the low lighting, clean sharp white tablecloths, and classic wooden chairs. The fried calamari has the right texture, the pasta a la grecca with chicken was nice, the lobster linguine was a perfect combo of sweet and bright! Great for large groups -- there was so much space and it was still packed! I went with a group of 13. We were seated immediately and everyone got their orders in right away. I sat at the bar and Bree made my dinner lovely, wonderful and not lonely. She was friendly, chatty and kind - just what I needed. The kitchen served up some delicious food.
