I don't normally review plumbers we've used because most that I've hired simply get the work done and charge higher prices than I would have anticipated -- which is neither positive or negative in my view. Truly exceptional plumbing experiences for our many homes over the last 4 decades have been rare. But the last few weeks I've been using Express Plumbing out of San Mateo and one of their OG plumbers, Will Perry, as a result of a wet crawlspace in our 50+ year old home that we just moved into -- which also had sewer pipe and HVAC issues in the crawlspace. Will took his time and gave us a careful estimate of not only the crawlspace, but other things in the house we just bought that might need attention while providing a thorough explanation of what needed to be done and why -- but also what could be done later. Will's approach reminded me more of what he'd do with his own house to make the plumbing work best and last a long time. Their pricing is not cheap, but not expensive either and so I felt good value in their services, especially when they offer Sunday service with no overtime charge. It's nice to see a company conduct its business so well that is also led by a professional representative who is honest, transparent, knowledgable and so pleasant to work with. These guys are VERY good. We needed a sewer main installed in Los Altos Hills that required over 500 feet of directional drilling, including under a significant stretch of paved roadway. We spoke to numerous contractors, and originally selected a different contractor whose bid was a little lower. But, we ended up switching to Express Plumbing as a result of issues with the other contractor. Nick B, the owner, is very knowledgeable and a nice guy. I've had multiple plumbers try to unclog my kitchen sink and they were able to do it, but a few days later it's clogged up again. Called to see what hours they kept and said I would probably be needing a plumber the following week if I could not accomplish it myself. Called on Saturday to say Please book me for 7:00 p.m. on Monday, even though it's after hours, I'll still need to have the service of clearing a clog In my kitchen sink pipes and installing my new kitchen faucet fixture. Did not hear from them on Monday to confirm 7:00 p.m. Monday appointment so I called them and they had no record of their answering service sending this message to them, although answering service was very thorough. So Express said they could come on Tuesday. I said okay. Edgar, the plumber called me and asked that I call him back. I did at 5:00 p.m. And said I'll be there at 7:00 and he said up front it would be 450 for the clog and $500 for the installation of the faucet but ALSO THAT HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO BOTH BECAUSE HE HAD PLANS. His girlfriend or wife was practically on the phone to me with him and I guess they didn't know I understand Spanish and she was asking him to cancel the appointment so they could keep their plans. I guess he thought inflating the price would take care of getting rid of the appointment I booked. I told him I'm calling Dittman so cancel the appointment. I did call Dittman and they were amazing and done in 1 hour and beat Express plumbing's price by OVER $400. It seems Edgar does not put his employer first when he is on the company clock. I called around san mateo plumbers and Express Plumbing, true to name, was the easiest and most responsive to talk to. The technician came within 30 mins of the call. He gave me some options - cheapest is to do a snake, and more expensive is to create a a clean-out. Ended up going for the latter, and the team did a great job replacing some old pipe. He was very professional and walked me thru a somewhat complicated process and quickly gained my trust. Once we decided to move forward with the work, Kim in the front office worked out all the details and obtained all the necessary permits from the city. Recommendation up front: there aren't enough stars to describe how happy I am with the work done by Express Plumbing (Christian & Greg). Our bathtub filled with sewage late on a Sunday night. A frantic Google search resulted in a call to Express Plumbing. Christian answered and said the earliest he could get someone to our house was Monday morning, at which time, they rooted our line. However, Christian wanted to run a camera through our line, at no cost to us, just to check some concerns he had. Our line is very, very old and the camera, along with a visual inspection of the main line under the house showed that everything from under our house to the city main had to be replaced. We were unhappy, but not too surprised. Christian quoted us a price that was fair, based on what neighbors had spent for similar, but less extensive work. The work (including permits) was completed quickly, efficiently, and neatly. I am giving 5 stars (I would give more if it was possible) for the following reasons: - fair price - excellent workmanship - timely response and completion - honesty: Christian and I had agreed to the scope and cost of the work verbally. However, a few of the details were not included in the written agreement and were charged as extras in the final invoiced work. I reminded him of our verbal agreement, which included the couple of extra items in question. He told me he remembered our agreement, apologized for the error and corrected the bill. These guys are a rip off, and incompetent. I called on Sunday afternoon because both my toilets were backing up, with sewage also backing up into the showers. The plumber came out and had to remove one of the toilets to get his snake in. He snaked the main line out only 50 feet, then put the toilet back. Then on the bill I was surprised that he had added an extra $250 for toilet removal/replacment! I asked if there was any warranty on his work. He said no. Then about 6 hours later my toilet backed up again. I don't trust these guys so am going to call someone else. read more

Called today at 9:30 AM after seeing decent reviews and the emergency services we need listed on their website (sewer pipe repair & clean up). Answering service said someone would be getting back to me shortly. Didn't hear by anyone, called back around 12 noon. They said someone would be in touch. Finally get a call back, tell the tech our issue (suspected sewer pipe leak under house). He asks our location, doesn't say anything. I sent pictures, don't hear back. I call him back, he says "We don't service your area." Also, he informed me that in fact, Express Plumbing does not do sewer leak clean up (why is this listed as a service on their website)? A) Answering service should have informed me about this at 9:30 AM - I've wasted 1/2 the day and am no closer to having this emergency repair fixed. B) Why didn't he tell me that when he asked my location? Unacceptable. read more

Top performers in every way. I needed my entire lateral sewer line replaced and Express Plumbing Services (EPS) was one of a few firms that I received price proposals from. I chose EPS because their written work proposal was very detailed, covering every aspect of the job, and their price proposal very competitive. Additionally, I had watched them work in my neighborhood a few months ago repairing the city's main sewer lines. At that time they impressed me as a company that worked quickly, to professional standards, and did a nice job of closing up openings. Joe, the estimator and project manager was quick to understand the scope of work needed, and the important details than needed attending to. He oversaw the project from start to finish, and even did a follow-up after the project was finished, just to make sure that I was pleased with the work. Ivan and Alberto were the two guys who did the actual work. They were assisted at times, but these two guys worked hard to do the actual work and to also make sure that I was informed of the work they were doing and how the entire project would come together. Additionally, they were very pleasant to work with, and - like Joe - asked from time-to-time if I had any questions and if I was pleased with the work. The last day Alberto even asked if I wanted to go under the house (crawl space) to see what they had done to tie all the drain lines to the new 4 inch lateral line. I did, of course. One important point.... a previous plumbing contractor had done some exploratory work, excavating around the 4 inch vertical section of cast iron pipe to assess its integrity. In the process they broke through the decaying pipe, thus allowing some grey water to flow into the hole they had excavated, and they didn't tell me they had done so. This created a potential health issue, and Ivan and Alberto handled it with good humor and great professionalism. They cleaned up the mess created by the previous firm, and Joe had factored that part of the job in his proposal. Well done! Amy was my office contact and she was also amazing. read more

In January 2025 Express Plumbing helped me immdiately when my bathroom sink faucet began issuing a stream of water without anyone turning it on! I had a visit from Greg within 3 hours of my phone call to the office. Greg diagnosed the sink's problem and returned the next day with a new faucet he'd volunteered to pick up after the vendor kept rejecting me because I wasn't on the Secure PIckUp list. (Why would I, a retired person who never worked in construction or plumbing, be on a Secure PickUp list?). He installed the faucet quickly and, answered all my questions. Greg was perfect -- courteous, articulate, patient, thoughtful with his suggestions, he even had shoe covers so he could walk on my white carpet. He even helped me find the Amazon part number for the driain filter I'll need now that the new faucet is installed. I would be happy to have Greg help me again anytime. True my unit is on the third floor but there is an elevator negating the need to bring it up the stairs. Al was aware of the elevator. I even asked him if he wanted to take the elevator or the stairs. There are also special dollies that enable a water heater to be installed by one technician instead of two. Extremely rude, very unprofessional and disrespectful. We asked Express to give us a quote for a job - they didn't know we had already had another company come out prior to compare. The person they sent did not knock, just tried to walk right in. He did not ask any questions, did not look at the marked off area (we have a leak & had a leak specialist come find & mark the area - we requested 2 options/estimates), he took no measurements- the first & only thing he said was "what's your budget". Then when confronted about it later on the phone he had the audacity to tell me my husband lied about the exchange (I have cameras Everywhere). And continued to berate me & tell me I was wrong. Do Not Use this company unless you want to pay more & need to have everything redone. * 5/9: The owner called this morning after seeing the review. Tried to make excuses for his worker (maybe he was having a bad day, he lives far away, etc).
