For all I have heard about Ezell's famous chicken I was pretty disappointed. I stopped by last night got the 3 piece white snack. (not sure how its a snack). Opted for the spicy chicken. Well where do I start. Bit into the chicken not much cruch to the skin at all. The batter was not crisp and tasted cakey. No spice either. Not a hint of what would be considered spicy. My wife and I were in the area and decided to stop and give Ezell's a try, even though I've heard that Ezell himself no longer works for the company and has lost the rights to the name. This is the chicken company that Oprah raved about, but not the recipes or the same people. The service was fine, the cashier was friendly when we placed our order (8 piece meal with coleslaw and mashed potatoes and gravy as well as a large order of fried okra, classic recipe on everything). The food, on the other hand, was horrible. I've had a lot of bad fried chicken, but this, by far, was the worst. Everything smelled like old, over-used grease. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that they haven't changed the oil in their vats since they opened last August. The chicken was warm, but not hot and steaming. The breading was inconsistently flavored. Some bites would taste like seasoned breading, some would taste like old grease, and some wouldn't taste at all. The chicken itself was moist enough, but bland. The coleslaw was overly wet and overly sweet. The mashed potatoes were ok, but a little salty. The gravy tasted just like the grease that they've been frying the chicken in and nothing else. Even opening the gravy container to pour it on the potatoes it smelled rank. After hearing so many rave reviews of Ezell's Chicken (not necessarily this location), my husband and I finally decided to give them a try. Unfortunately, it pretty much sucked. I ordered the 1/2 pound chicken strips, and they were totally flavorless. The breading wasn't crispy, and did I mention flavorless? I also got a small order of coleslaw, and it had too much mayonnaise. My husband ordered the 1 piece breast meal with fries and a roll. The fries were HORRENDOUS. The only flavor they had was just.... weird and gross. His chicken was way more browned and crispy than my strips, but he also said it was flavorless. To their credit, chicken was cooked well. I can't deal with the current 2 1/2 star rating. In my experience the food is terrific and the service has always been great to us. Ezell's deserves much better. Whenever we have a game at French Field or Kent-Meridian HS, it's an excuse to eat at Ezell's. Sometimes we eat in, if there's a table available. The store is always clean and I like being able to watch the food being prepared. If it's busy, we take it to go and make people jealous with our picnic meal in the stands. The chicken is consistently cooked perfectly, crisp and crunchy on the outside and juicy and flavorful inside. I agree that the original is a tad bland, but the spicy is near perfection. The fresh rolls are a treat, light and fresh. I always intend to try the side dishes, but usually choose to eat my fill of chicken and rolls. We've twice made large orders for team dinners, and the staff has always been professional and helpful. This week we ordered 120 pieces and rolls, which they delivered to our location for $20. They were great to work with, delivered right on-time, and helped us set-up. There's no better crowd pleaser, especially for a mess of hungry teenagers. Highly recommended for events and catering. Stopped for the very first time for a take out. So glad we did, it was fabulous, the chicken is not greasy, the mashed potatoes are real, the close slaw a little tangy and the portions are really nice and big. Just got done devouring a 3 piece tender combo and a two piece chicken thigh order. I don't eat much fried chicken so I have nothing to compare it to other than KFC, and let me tell you this place is better! That's coming from a man who loves kfc. If you're in a hurry, be patient. It's worth the wait, Ezell's chicken is the best in the nw! The people who were blasting this on yelp all said it tasted good but took too long, or whatever. I've been to a lot of great places that take a little longer to get served or food fast. This may be one of those places, especially when busy. Best chicken ever! Seriously, I am from the South and I judge chicken harshly. This stuff is tasty, juicy, more meat than breading... you can't say that about any place around that gets it to you just as quick. Honestly, my husband and I chose this place over Red Robin, which supposedly is some chicken expertise place. They are always fast, very down to earth, helpful... the only thing I will say is that I don't exactly think it sanitary to see the staff eating while behind the counter. It kinds breaks the rules of food safety standards, guys. I don't really care though, as the only time I saw it happen was a day when I am pretty sure they were short handed, so who knows how long these poor guys went without a break! I love this place. I went here for my lunch break today and grabbed a meal for my coworker who had never had Ezell's before. I was talking it up as amazing chicken. Now I am sorry to say I am embarassed with what I brought back. Ezell's is the only place I go to get fried chicken. My usual is the Spicy Chicken Strip meal with ranch. I grew up going to the Renton Highlands location and my experience at this Kent location was really disappointing. I feel ripped off here and the service was awful. FYI, I still support this product, I just want people to know you can get it a LOT better elsewhere. I'm used to paying about $8 for half a to go box of hot fries, the signature sweet roll, and about 4 LARGE pieces of fresh chicken, Drink included! I paid the same amount today for about 5 chicken nugget size pieces, stale fries, no drink and no roll. I don't know if each business can set their own menu, but what I got today didn't feel worth what I paid. To add salt to the wound, they didn't have ranch that day. Also, the cook was in a fit arguing with his cashier while two other employees were walking around doing nothing. They had mixed up some orders and one man almost left before they could finally fill his order. The only savings grace was the spicy flavor was still on par. But I'm still hungry! Which has never happened before because the portions have always been way bigger. i don't see myself coming back here. I had to give a star to even write this review . I went to eat at Ezells on Wednesday . I ordered a 3 piece original with a roll. There was only 3 pieces of original. Don't know how long they had been there but it was 5:30 pm so I was wondering why there wasn't a lot of pieces up. Around 12:00 midnight I wasn't feeling well, stomach was hurting. I got up the next morning and started vomiting, had diarrhea, and a mild headache. I had diarrhea for 3 days multiple times thru the day. I've talked to some friends and they said it happened to them too, I'm done , will never ever eat there again. Then I heard some disturbing information from someone who used to work there. Have heard good things of this chain and how great their fried chicken is. Finally got a chance to visit this location with my son. We both ordered the three piece dinner combo with a side order of fried okra. Well honestly, the chicken wasn't up to our expectations, though crispy on the crust but lacking flavor and seasoning. The spicy okra hardly gave any heat to make us sweat. The roll, cole slaw and mashed potato were average. We are fond of fried chicken, and from experience I would say one of their competitors in the same line of business has better chicken with richer flavors and better quality. I asked him if I could speak to the manager and he said it was her day off and left it at that. Instead of trying to help remedy the situation, was just gave attitude. I got there and my order STILL WASN'T READY!! Again, I had to wait 10-15 min!! Are you kidding me???? I've been going to Ezell's for years at their original store near Garfield and always enjoyed the people there, friendly service and the attention to detail....OBVIOUSLY with the brother's splitting up the business, whichever one has the Ezell's side doesn't give a rats ass about CUSTOMER SERVICE or the attitudes of his employee's. They were all too busy coordinating their social calendar's w/each other. Maybe they should do some extra training on how to take care of people who are spending $$ there.
