    Lamb Kebab (10)

Sure it probably has become a bit pricier but the menu has everything I want on it. Delicious morsels of meat on skewers, cold side dishes, dumplings/bao, hot dishes. The lamb kebab was great quality and I love that in true KTown fashion, banchan came with. I know it's not new technology but the self-rotating skewer contraption amazed me.

Feng Mao Lamb Kebab - Koreatown's Fresh-Meat Skewer House with Rare Highlights Koreatown has no shortage of BBQ, but very few places where the meat itself is fresh enough to define the entire experience. Feng Mao is one of those places. This isn't Japanese yakitori - no binchotan, no choreographed precision. Here, you grill your own skewers over a hybrid heat system: a clean gas flame underneath for consistent baseline heat, and compressed briquette charcoal on top for radiant heat and a touch of smoke. It's the classic LA Korean-Chinese skewer setup - stable, predictable, and perfect for guests who want control. Meat Quality - Surprisingly Close to "Warm-Butchered" Fresh I don't know where Feng Mao sources their proteins, but the lamb, beef, and chicken all behave like meat that has never seen a deep freeze. The signs are unmistakable: * tight grain, not the loose texture of thawed product * clean aroma, no oxidation or freezer edge * low-melt fat that renders quickly on high heat * zero "thaw drip", the usual giveaway of frozen proteins It reminds me of the warm-butchered lamb you occasionally see in the Bay Area, where small processors handle animals daily and deliver meat with a sweetness and firmness you simply don't get from commodity frozen cuts. I can't confirm if Feng Mao uses a similar supply chain - but the behavior of the meat strongly suggests a very fresh cycle. In short: they're buying good meat, and it shows. Lamb Kidney - Rare in LA, and Done Right You almost never see lamb kidney in Los Angeles, and even when it appears, it's rarely prepared well. Here, the exterior is lightly crisped, the interior stays tender and mineral-sweet, and the fat renders cleanly without metallic edges. If you appreciate offal done correctly, this is a specialty worth ordering whenever it's available. Pan-Fried Dumplings - A Genuine Surprise Most potstickers use thin, factory-tight skins. Feng Mao uses leavened dough - a Northeastern technique rarely seen in LA. You notice it instantly: * the top is soft and airy, almost bread-like * the bite has elasticity * the interior holds an impressive amount of juice * the bottom is pan-crisped without hardening the shell A simple dish, but shockingly well executed. Pickled Cabbage Lamb Soup - The Correct Winter Ending After grilling through skewers with a cold beer, the natural ending is a pot of pickled cabbage lamb soup - milky from long simmering, brightened by the lactic acidity of fermented cabbage. It resets the palate and warms you from the inside out - the ideal winter closing dish. The Koreatown Experience This isn't curated dining. It's lively, smoky, and filled with Korean and Chinese regulars who clearly know what they're here for: * fresh lamb skewers * beer * conversation * and the satisfaction of grilling to your own preference It's straightforward, unpretentious, and uniquely Koreatown. Service Friendly, fast, and attentive - quick with charcoal, quick with table resets, even during peak hours. In Koreatown, that alone deserves credit. Verdict If you're searching for: * Koreatown lamb skewers * LA Chinese-Korean BBQ * fresh lamb kebab in Los Angeles * rare lamb kidney * compressed charcoal grill in K-Town * pickled cabbage lamb soup * Olympic Blvd skewers Feng Mao is absolutely worth a stop. Not a precision-grilling restaurant. Not chasing aesthetics. Just fresh meat, the right heat, and a surprisingly strong supporting menu. 4 stars - earned exactly the way a Koreatown skewer house should. - Dr. C Only writing for what truly earns the stars.

Such an interesting experience, I loved the Lamb, Chicken and especially the eggplant. I loved the concept of this restaurant, it was only just a little hot but the food was amazing definitely recommend

My first time coming to Feng Mao in Koreatown for dinner and this place has been around since the early 2000s. The corner reminds me of an old school spot that would be a great setting for a movie. This place is a skewer spot that is serving up more than just lamb! They have pork, steak, chicken, and even random pieces like gizzards, kidneys, and heart! So if you haven't tried those maybe just order one stick at a time to just try it out. The meat comes out raw to your table and you put it on the rack which cooks the meat. It rotates it and just depending on preference then you can eat it. Overall my favorite is the beef, cucumber salad, potato pancake, and also the seafood pancake with the sauce! It is perfect! The place is small so come early to beat the rush!

So delicious and I loved the self rotating grill! We arrived a bit after 5 pm on a Sunday and snagged one of the last available tables. We ordered a variety of skewers and some fried intestines. All delicious and would love to try more items next time!

I hadn't been to Feng Mao in over 10 years, so it felt nostalgic to come back. Back then, there was always a long line, and from what I could see, that hasn't changed much. This time, a friend picked the restaurant. While they don't have their own parking lot, you can park across the street at Hanmi Bank on 5th, so parking wasn't an issue for me. We ordered a variety of skewers -- lamb (their specialty), beef, and octopus. The first thing that caught my eye was the self rotating grill. Such a cool upgrade! It rotates the skewers for you, so the grilling is even and effortless. I don't remember them having that back in the day. The skewers all came out perfectly cooked if you pull them off at the right time, and the flavor was solid. We also tried the marinated cucumbers, grilled chives, and sweet and sour pork. The cucumbers were light and refreshing. The chives, grilled with sauce, had great flavor, though a bit on the salty side (easy fix: just dip less into the sauce). The sweet and sour pork was different from the typical Chinese style -- heavier on the batter and with a lighter sauce that leaned sweet without much sour. The pork itself was crunchy, so it was still enjoyable, just a different take on the dish. Overall, the meal was satisfying. The service was fine -- not overly attentive, but things ran smoothly, especially if you can speak Korean or Chinese. I'd recommend Feng Mao if you enjoy skewers, especially lamb. Just keep in mind that dinner time, especially on weekends, can come with a wait.

I'd been wanting to eat skewers, and ChatGPT recommended this restaurant. My family of four went on a Sunday around 2:00, and we were seated right away since there was only one occupied table. There was a QR code posted on the wall that you could scan and place the order. It was nice to have the automatic turner cook the meat right at the table, and all the food tasted good. We got the lamb skewers, marinated beef skewers, spicy mara skewers, and pork belly skewers. We also enjoyed the fried pork with sweet & sour sauce. There were a lot of dishes I wanted to try, so I will be back next time! The only thing was that you could get hot with the hot grill so close to you. I would avoid to go on a hot day.

I love to go here when I want to eat lamb. On Myeon(hot noodle) is so good match with meat. I like this vibe. Service is just soso. Servers are fast though they want people get out earlier. Feel bad.

Was finally able to try Fend Mao despite living so close in the general area. The stir fry vegetable was an amazing accompaniment to the assortment of skewers we got (lamb, gizzard, beef). Service was quick and efficient and we came when it was quiet so it was nice to just enjoy the food in relative peace

Whenever I want Chinese skewers in LA this is the spot I go to. Small spot but tasty quality food. Had to get some greens and they were soo good.

My first ever experience having this type of experience. Why have I never heard of this place?!? The lamb kebabs were delicious. Not gamey at all. I love the rotating skewer concoctions, I know, I know, I'm late to the game! We also tried the beef skewers which were really good but I'd still choose the lamb if I had to. Large prawns were also delicious. The cucumber salad was a nice, refreshing side to order. The servers were constantly around to make sure none of our meat burned. It's also nice to have the ordering system via QR code. Once you enter your order, the good comes within minutes. The restaurant itself is pretty small so there's likely a wait but tables seem to turn over fast. Parking in the area isn't as bad as other parts of ktown. You can also park in the back lot during dinner time.

    Marc N.

There's usually a bit of a wait since seating is limited, but it's worth it for the experience. You can order a mix of lamb, beef, chicken, and cartilage, and everything tastes great. The seasoning is heavy on cumin, which fits the style. They cook everything for you, and the setup makes it easy to keep things warm while you eat. Pro tip: use the skewer holder to push the meat off, it makes eating way easier. You can also sear the meat yourself for extra char. Service: Efficient despite the crowd Food/Drinks: Great selection of meats, flavorful with strong cumin, nice setup for grilling and eating Ambiance: Small space with limited seating, casual and lively 8/10 Tasty skewers and a fun, interactive dining experience despite the wait

Lots of places these days for Chinese skewers, Feng Mao is among the oldest and still one of the best. Inside is not large, street parking is still the thing, and their skewers are generously cut compared to most of their competitors. For a while they had stiff competition, but as of late their competitors have gotten more skimpy, while Feng Mao has retained their original quality. Service is pretty good, as are some of the cooked dishes, especially the eggplant, which is delicious. Cold cucumber is good too, maybe skip the green onion pancake, which felt insufficiently crispy in the middle.

The pork ribs were not your typical saucy, sweet, fall off the bone type. These were more dry style with a bark that can be a little tough, but the meat itself was still juicy underneath. The cornbread bibingka was also really good. It felt like the perfect mix of classic cornbread and bibingka, slightly sweet and soft, and the sugar on top was a nice touch. Portions were solid too. Immediately, there was parking available. That alone felt odd. No line. Plenty of parking. Not a single customer inside. That should have been my first sign. We ordered beef ribs, sliced brisket, mac and cheese, and dessert. They were out of the banana pudding, so we settled for peach cobbler. The total was around $50, which isn't bad for dinner for two. The excitement really started to hit when we got home and opened everything up. Unfortunately, that's when reality set in. The mac and cheese was terrible. Completely flavorless, watery, and mushy. The pasta was so overcooked it practically fell apart and blended together like baby food. It tasted old and had absolutely no seasoning or richness whatsoever. First and last time ordering that. Next was the brisket. The slices were gray, dry, and looked like they'd been sitting around for a while. I took one bite and immediately said, "Absolutely not." Another disappointment. But I wasn't too worried yet because I came for one thing: THE RIBS. The flavor was actually still there. The sauce and seasoning reminded me of the Woody's I remembered. BUT THE TEXTURE... A completely different story. The ribs weren't tender, weren't juicy, and definitely weren't falling off the bone. They were tough enough that I found myself working for every bite. At that point, the empty parking lot, empty dining room, and lack of lines made a lot more sense. By the end of the meal, I ended up rinsing the remaining ribs off so my dog could enjoy them as a chew toy. What hurts most isn't the bad meal--it's seeing what was once a legendary BBQ spot become a shadow of what it used to be. I almost wish I hadn't come back because it tarnished some really great childhood memories for me. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but I also believe in being honest. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but based on this experience, Woody's is not the Woody's I remember, and unfortunately, I won't be returning. If it's any consolation, the cobbler was okay. But not worth going out of my way for.
