First impression, looks and feels more like a bar than a pizza place to me. Parking on Fairfield Ave is almost always sketchy and sparse. The pizza itself was decent. Not great, not the worst I ever had. My typical test a place out large plain pizza... so I can taste their crust/sauce/cheese without any competing flavors. Hit me kind of expensive for what it was really. The fire engine gimmick is cute and all, but Fairfield and New Haven counties are screaming hot with great pizza places so better can be had for less.. That's my personal opinion. read more

My co workers and I came here for lunch because a percentage of our bill will be donated to juvenile diabetes. I love when businesses are philanthropic! We ordered French fries for our appetizer it came with spicy mayo and spicy ketchup. fries were perfect, not too greasy not too soggy they were just right. I ordered the cheese pizza with broccoli and spinach, I also tried the buffalo chicken pizza which was SO good usually it's not appealing to me but this was flavored perfectly, so was the balsamic pizza and I don't like balsamic vinaigrette. Came in last night with my boyfriend who has never been there before. Our waitress Jamie was one of the best (if not the best) waitresses I've ever had. She was attentive, friendly, quick and helpful with the drink list. Our pizza was phenomenal, half loaded mashed potato, half buffalo chicken. Firehouse decor is very cool. Sunday brunch with bottomless drinks is deadly. Plan to walk home!! Last night my wife ordered Carmine's eggplant. We laughed at the huge portion. It was enough for 3-4 people. She ate until she was full and brought home a huge meal. I had the crab cakes with Parmesan risotto and asparagus with spicy aioli. It was very tasty. I took home one of the two cakes and half the risotto. We are looking forward to eating our meals again tonight. Staff is very friendly. The bar is big and a fun place to hang out. My go to pizza. I've tried numerous pizzas in and around Fairfield. This is one of my top two places. Consistently good.

Given the slow pace of rebuilding I was not sure if they were ever going to re-open after the fire but I can say the wait was worth it. They really have done a great job not only with the renovation but also the menu. I prefer to sit in the bar area as they have a lot of seating at the bar , plenty of TVs to catch the game, and several good beers on tap. I have been a several times and find the pizza to consistently be delicious. The crust is just right for me (not to think or thin) and they have plenty of unique choices. I am a big fan of the Black Rocker (shrimp/spinach/tomato) and heard the Loaded Mash Potato Pie was really good. The Appetizers are also tasty with the Beef Tips being my favorite. The atmosphere is another thing I really like about this place. It is a mix of ages and due to tables in the bar area I have seen families as well but given the small size they are not overtaking the place. My girlfriend and I agreed that the bar is more high end which added to the charm. Fire Engine Pizza is now in my regular rotation and if you have not been I strongly recommend giving it a try. Given the review you may ask why not 5 stars? I took a star away because the city did such a crappy job with snow removal so that it was a hassle to park. With the snow gone this wont be a problem anymore as the big parking lot across the street (next to the Creek) usually has plenty of room. My only concern now is that once people start to hear about this place it is going to start to get overtaken. read more

I've been living in Black Rock now for about 2 & 1/2 years. My friends all live 20+ mins away, and when we do get together it's usually in our hometown Milford. They finally were coming here to see a show at Acoustic last night, so I was excited to show off my town! My boyfriend and I had explained that pizza is usually sold by the slice through the pizza truck, and my friends would be able to eat during/after the show. When we discovered the truck wasn't running last night (no big deal) we decided to grab some pizzas at Fire Engine. It was obvious that our server didn't feel comfortable serving us for some reason, and she seemed especially focused on one of my friends. We are all around 25 and were behaving in a completely normal, respectable manner. It was very strange and she was obviously staring and talking to her manager about my friend. I totally understand if someone is drunk and you don't feel comfortable serving them, but this situation was something out of the twilight zone. Finally when the owner came out, he checked all of our IDs again and basically said he had the right to refuse us service. Come on. As an owner, look around and realize that we are all calm and of legal age and there is no reason to treat us that way just because your server was paranoid for some reason. I'm disappointed that you wouldn't recognize that your employee was wrong here, not the customer. Also we were trying to get 3 pizzas, and only two people were drinking beer. It was just about midnight, too. It's not like it was 2am and we were ordering pitchers of bud light. Overall, I was embarrassed that I had bragged about this place to my friends and had taken them there to be judged. Firehouse is truly one of those places where the whole is so much greater than the sum of its individual parts. It is THE place to go in the area for a relaxed pizza, a drink, and fun times. The pizza is one of the best in Fairfield county, period. The standard red sauce and cheese pizzas is outstanding, thin crust but not too thin, it has some substance and chew to it. The speciality pizzas though really set it apart. The jalapeño polenta pizza sounds insane, but is one of the most delicious things I have ever had. It's truly a genius combination. Plus they serve pizza until the bar closes, so that's an awesome perk when you need something late night. The bar has the best atmosphere for a chill night. Definitely "bar like" but not rowdy, comfortable but not sloppy, nice clientele where everyone feels comfortable. Good for a casual date, friends, or bringing family from out of town. Good on tap selection and specialtydrinks. Love the staff too. Friendly, welcoming, attentive. You guys rock. I love that the place stayed open through all the blustery winter weather, and now that (hopefully) it's getting to be a bit warmer there will be some great opportunities for pizza and drinks on the patio. So we went across the street to the Fire Engine. The place was packed but we agreed to sit at the bar so we could be seated right away. The ambiance was nice. It's an upscale gourmet pizza place, yet you feel like your in a family restaurant. We ordered the Black Rocker. It comes with Cheese, Spinach, Shrimp and tomatoes. We substituted the shrimp for anchovies and added sausage. It was Delicious!!!!! We plan on going back to try the rest of their menu. This place will not disappoint. Stopped by a few times to check out the menu and thought the prices were high for Black Rock for pasta and other non pizza selections. Went in for dinner with the wife 2 weeks ago. The waitress in training was sweet and delightful. ...only wish I could say the same for the food. Brussel sprouts appetizer was bland, mushy, tasteless. Tasted like they used bagged frozen sprouts. My pasta entre was mediocre. Any neighborhood Italian restaurant would have done at least as well...or better. ..for a lower price. Finally made it here on a random Sunday to see what the hype was and oh yeah by the way to try a selection from there brunch menu.... The brunch menu is very very limited in my opinion I had the 8oz sirloin steak topped with blue cheese and served with 2 fried eggs and breakfast fries. Which was well portion. Nothing crazy and for the taste worth every penny. Only negative was how salty the blue cheese was. Oh yeah get your eggs fried medium you'll thank me later. My son had a small bacon pizza. And the bacon was far from goof which is hard to say because it's bacon and how could bacon not be good. This bacon had a ham taste to it. Our waiter was OK not great. Decided to try a new pizza place tonight and we decided to go with Fire Engine Pizza because their menu looked amazing and the pizzas sounded great. We ordered though yelp for pick up and requested 7:30 PM for pickup time. We called at 7:10 PM just to get an update when our order would be ready and they were unable to find the order we had placed. I hung up and asked my wife to call them and they were finally able to figure out how to work their system and found our order and we were told the "order has been ready for a while". I left immediately to go pick up our order and when I got home (2.5 miles away) the pizzas were cold. It also doesn't help that they put their "tamper evident" stickers on the boxes right in front of me. We're extremely disappointed in the quality of service and the fact that we have to turn on our oven to heat up the food because it was made way too early without even letting us know. read more

I'm a pizza aficionado so I'm tough when it comes to pizza joints. Got there on a Friday night with about a 20minute wait that went by fast. We waited by the bar which had a few TV's with sports showing. As soon as we sat down our waitress was attentive and took drink orders. Feeling adventurous we ordered the Jalapeno Polenta Pizza! Took about another 20 minutes or more for the pie to come out but it looked great when it finally did. The anticipation was a bit of a let down unfortunately. The first thing was that the red sauce was barely noticeable. The second thing that was lacking was the jalepeno and I like spicy food. The pizza was certainly edible but just not what was advertised on the menu. (PS-I did look at people eating regular cheese pies around me and they had enough red sauce from what I could see.) Ruth, the bartender, is very cool. So is the management. There's about 11 beers on tap here including some unique varieties. They are about $4.50 each, which is a little more than necessary, but the atmosphere makes up for it. The restaurant is clean and the environment is refreshing. Thin crust, hot, cheesy and some were pretty exotic flavored. We liked the clam pie, white pizza, buffalo chicken and bacon. The plain pizza was very tasty too. Have been here many times and always have a great experience. However just held a party here and now I know why I keep coming back! I reserved the restaurant side for a party for 35-40 adults and kids, and it was extremely comfortable. The service and food stayed at the same high quality that I had come to expect. We had our own server and she individually served and talked to each and every person at the party. They also allowed us to bring in birthday cakes and they even helped to serve. Management made the planning extremely easy and cost effective. Plus I was able to change orders or drinks during the party as well. We got an order of firehouse fries, a small Sunday Dinner pizza, a small Caesar salad pizza, and a large Mr Miyagi pizza. The fries were good, all sauces yummy. The Sunday dinner pizza didn't have gravy, we were expecting typical gravy on it but maybe we aren't sure what Sunday gravy really is, or it was missing it. The Ceasar salad pizza was good, basically a cheese pizza, with the salad in the side so it wasn't soggy as delivery. Very fresh salad. The Mr Amiyah I was good, lots of chicken, but not a lot of ramen. Was expecting more ramen noodles, but definitely interesting and good - good, not excellent. We ordered the Loaded Mashed Potato Pizza, Mackenzie Rose Pizza and a small Fresh Mozz Margherita Pizza. I had a slice of the Loaded Mash and Mackenzie each and LOVED the Mackenzie! Oh Fire Engine.... How do I love thee.... Let me count the ways..... Seriously though, this is my FAVORITE walkable restaurant for dinner/lunch/ late night drunk pizza. Oh, you didnt know? You can get pizza until CLOSING. Yes, yes you can. Two words: Beef tips. Seriously, get them, and get them medium rare and you will thank me later. They come with chipotle aioli for dipping, but the flavor of the beef tips is so amazing you dont even need it (but it's delicious, so you'll want it. you will DEFINITELY want it). The specials are ALWAYS awesome and so are the specialty pizzas. Homemade ricotta gnocchi is to to die for. If you're going for entrees, the lemon chicken is my favorite (but that's only because the chicken marsala isnt on the regular menu, just an occasional special!). Im allergic to garlic (sacrilegious, I know) and they are SUPER accommodating to that, which I dont ever find in a lot of other restaurants. That said, my favorite pizza is a modified Mackenzie Rose (no pesto, plain tomatoes instead of bruschetta tomatoes) but It would be delicious the regular way too! Oh and the Kung Pow Chicken pizza?
