I was excited to try this place after seeing how popular it was on yelp. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. How can I put this appropriately...these are gentrified tacos if you know what I mean. It's a very Americanized version of a taco. We asked for a lime and they didn't have any. A taco place with no limes? They were TINY and pricey! More like an appetizer taco. The place is super small and feels crammed. In addition, it took like 40 minutes to get our food. We got the Baja taco and coconut shrimp and both were too sweet. Last weekend, my wife and I decided to check out Fish Guts. We knew there'd be a wait, and although 35 minutes was a bit long - we've waited longer for other places. Once we finally got seated, things started going downhill. My wife asked the server about the fish sandwich. She bluntly said, "I don't know," and then added, "He doesn't tell us anything," gesturing to the chef in the back, continuing, "I'm sick of people asking." She even said she wanted to put up a sign telling customers to "stop asking about the sandwich." We were pretty stunned, especially after waiting so long in the heat. By 1 PM, they were already out of three menu items. We went ahead and ordered the beer-battered fish tacos, coconut shrimp tacos, and hongos tacos. The server warned us that the dishes would come out separately, but we didn't expect each dish to arrive 20 minutes apart. Each plate comes with two fish tacos, which we split. The shrimp tacos were slightly better than the fish tacos, but not by much. The toppings were exactly the same, which was disappointing. The hongos tacos were forgettable, to say the least. Living near San Diego, Tijuana, and Rosarito, there is no shortage of good fish tacos, and Fish Guts just didn't measure up. The food was good, but their recipes, presentation, and service is not game-changing and is in no way worth the wait or the rude service. What should've been a quick 25-minute lunch turned into a 90 minute ordeal (including the 35 minute wait outside). Roughly 15 minutes of eating tacos and 45 minutes waiting for the next taco, sitting on very uncomfortable stools. Plus, with half the restaurant unshaded, we ended up getting sunburned. The whole experience just wasn't worth it. With service like this, I doubt this place will last long. I'd recommend skipping it and saving your time. read more

We went here on a Friday evening for dinner. When we got here, they were sold out of the Al pastor and coconut shrimp tacos. I was disappointed since it was only 6pm and they have a very small menu, but understood. It happens. So we ordered the Espada and Baja tacos instead. Here's where the one star review comes in - i cannot believe why the wait for 2 orders of tacos took so long. We were told that the chef makes everything fresh, but for a casual dining place, it really shouldn't take that long for an order of tacos. We finished our margarita and beer and the tacos order wasn't even out yet. No joke, we checked the time and it took 45 mins for the first order of tacos to come out and another 15 mins for our second order. I don't think I've waited that long for food at fine dining places. I'll give it to them - the tacos were good, albeit small. Overall, two tacos orders and two drinks came out to $43 after an hour long wait. Food is decent but service needs lots of work. Not sure I'd go back...unless I've eaten beforehand. read more

I'm a fish taco person, and I just found my favorite place. Delicious. Worth it completely. I had the blackened swordfish taco - so tender and flavor was spot on. I then had the coconut shrimp taco, amazing, perfect crunch and slaw. Then the Baja fish taco, perfect. Homemade corn tortillas made the tacos. I had the hibiscus sweet tea so refreshing. The ambience great and the bartender was so nice. Great service. A must go to. Opens at noon. There will be a line. I recommend getting there by 11:45 a.m. Fast service. read more

I've been passing this place while walking to my car from work. Back when it hadn't opened yet and after. I have been wanting to try it for a while and I think I had low expectations coming in but it was so delicious everything was fresh and thoughtful and the drinks were so refreshing. Rating the food turnaround time- It took 45 mins to get our first taco order served (1 coconut - two tacos) then 30 mins for second order( 1 baja - two tacos) after server took our orders. Realizing it was going to take that long - I figured I better place a second order. We were third in place at the door on a Saturday right at noon opening. I do not understand why it took so long, apparently chef makes every taco individually so it's fresh. (Similar experience as other bad reviews). Some people got their food before us although they arrived after us. Something is amiss on their ordering and/or prepping stations. I saw at least five people in the kitchen, so not sure why they can't get it right. Cocktails kept coming though - hahaha. Maybe that's their model - get you drunk before you eat your tacos. Coconut shrimp tacos were very crisp and yummy. Baja tacos - not impressed. Basically same fixings and sauce flavor on both types of tacos. Don't go here if you're hungry. I can't imagine if this happens to someone that waits in a long line. Bring a snack- no chips and salsa - which normally I don't expect from a taco place. If they're going to take that long to bring out food, then they should consider this- you can charge for it. I wouldn't mind paying if I am hungry. read more

I came here for lunch and was surprised that they only had one menu item available for lunch, a fish sandwich. The price was $10.00 and the sandwich was delicious with a flaky fish and chips type center. The sauce was a type of tartar but I think it had capers in it, very delicious. I would like to try dinner. The dinner menu was more extensive and looked like a fun exploration for the next time. Suggestions: 1. Make it clear how you pay, have a sign that either says "be seated" or "wait for a hostess". I could not figure out if you ordered at the counter or how it worked. 2. You carry sodas but no diet? When I asked for a Diet Coke I was told that "our philosophy is, if you want a soda, then you get a real soda, no diet." This is ridiculous. Give the customer what they want. I almost left as I was restricting my sugar intake and there were plenty of sugary sodas but no diet. 3. Put your hours of operation on the door or window. There is no way to tell when the place is open and the hours and days are unusual. Something like Wed. through Sat. In any case, post the hours. We arrived at 11:15 A.M. for lunch and didn't know you don't open until noon. There are no signs. Also what days are you closed, it sounded as if you are closed on Monday and Tuesday. read more

So after a long day of undergoing some minor surgery in Coronado, my beautiful wife brought me here for a late lunch/early dinner. It is definitely a fish taco place though they do have a mushroom taco for the vegetarians. My wife had the al pastor with opa; I had the blackened swordfish (sorry I don't remember what they named it). All of it was a perfect flavor balance and I believe excellent for people who THINK they don't like fish. All the tortillas are made in house fresh when you order and are some of the best you can find anywhere. We did try the mushroom tacos too. There were 3 different kinds of mushrooms along with manchego cheese 2 ways. One of the best mushroom dishes I've ever had. We don't make it to Barrio Logan often but I have a feeling we'll be back! read more

We waited approximately 30 minutes. We were seated inside at the bar/counter. We were helped by one of the owners, her husband was working in the kitchen. She was extremely friendly & helpful. We decided to order: Estilo Baja, De Coco, De Espada & Fish & chips. Each plate comes with 2 tacos. We ended up sharing in order to try each. They were all so good, but my personal favorites were the De Coco- coconut shrimp and the Estilo Baja- beer battered white fish. Everything was super fresh from the corn tortilla, the fish to the sauces. I also tried the hibiscus sweet tea, refreshing & not super sweet.
