Flaming Ox has quickly become our go to spot for beef noodle soup! I like the mala beef noodle soup with the thick noodles. The noodles are fresh and perfectly cooked with an addictive chew. The broth is jam packed with flavor and reminds me of Beef noodle soup in Taiwan. They don't hold back on flavor or spice! The beef is super tender and generously thiccccc. I would also highly recommend the cold eggplant appetizer. Super unique and refreshing! I see a lot of people eating the braised pork and rice dish so I had to try the smaller portion. The meat was super flavorful and comforting. I'm a noodle gal but next time maybe I can convince other people in my party to order the rice and splitsies. Best of both worlds! If you are looking for a clean place to eat this is the one. Their food taste healthy, not too salty like many other places. Their scallion pancake is super tasty. 5/5 I would come here again. My favorite is the Mala beef noodle soup with thick noodles. I have ordered it around three times already. I love that noodle soup because it actually fills me up. Usually when I go to restaurants to eat noodle soup, whether it is pho, beef noodle soup, or other hand pulled noodle places, I usually still need to eat at least half a bowl of noodles after eating my first bowl. However, this place does not skimp out on its portions. I also ordered the pork chop over rice to share one time and I really like the meat. The appetizers also really hit the spot. I was very impressed with the tofu and egg dish. Usually most places really mess up that dish, but they did a really good job on this one. I am going to come back here soon. We got the Mala and Bone Broth Beef Noodle soups, both of which exceeded expectations. Honestly, everything about the dishes were exceptional. They gave a good amount of tender beef. If you like tendon, I would recommend the Half Tendon, Half Beef add on. For a dollar extra, this is super worth it because the tendon was the most tender tendon I have ever had! The thick noodles had such good chewy texture and the portion of the noodles was perfect! I was super full with the last bite. For side dishes, I highly recommend the pickled cucumber--it serves as a refreshing complement. I cannot overstate how amazing this place is! We have been searching for the best Taiwanese beef noodle soup and we've definitely found it. Their broth (especially the traditional hong shao rou noodle soup) is extremely savory and tasty but it's not oily! The broth still tastes super light and clean but still flavorful. We've had their noodles delivered before and felt that it was decent enough that we would want to try the place in person. Unfortunately, when we got there, we had a terrible experience just trying to get a table. We had checked in at the kiosk to put our names down and were 2nd in line, an estimated 13 minute wait. When two tables had finished, the waiter skipped over us and sat the next group after us without even calling us. This was super frustrating, and the other party was already seated, so we did not want to make it a big deal. The thing is with this place is that it is small, the waiting area which we were in the whole time was cramped, the tables in the dining area are also pretty cramped together and the air con inside ia probably not enough for the space. Waiting for the next table while sitting in the heat was not something we wanted to do, so we left. We got a notification that our table was ready 30 minutes after we had put our names down, and by then we were already home. I don't think we will be coming back or ordering from this place again. read more

I grew up in Taizhong, Taiwan. I grew up in Taiwan and lived there for 30 years before coming to the states. This is a great spot for Taiwanese food. The portions are generous and the food really reminds me of home. I come here for the Mala beef noodle soup and it is extremely delicious. I took my family, which included my wife who is born in Taipei. She really likes the food and wants to come back again. My sons and I ordered the Mala Beef noodle soup, while my wife ordered a minced pork rice with pork chops. We also ordered all the appetizers. I went and spoke with chef is super talented. Turned out that the chef lived in Taiwan and trained under some chefs there. I am super impressed with the dedication. I am going to bring my family back here when the time comes. read more

I highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the area. I've been a big fan of Eric Chung since his 333 Truck days so I was very excited to hear he was finally getting back to his roots and opening a Taiwanese restaurant. I'm also glad that the Bay Area is finally getting more Taiwanese restaurants again. After the most recent wave of mainland Chinese immigrants, most of the Taiwanese beef noodle restaurants seem to have been replaced by LanZhou beef noodle spots. The menu at Flaming Ox though small, does a great job covering all the staples needed in a Taiwanese restaurant including seasonal vegetables, bento options, and the cold appetizers. My first bite of the beef noodle soup, I felt as if I were transported back to Taiwan. Everything I tasted that day captured the authentic Taiwanese flavor. As a bonus the braised beef chunks in the beef noodle soup was literally melting on my chopsticks. I am looking forward to coming here more often! read more

Been to Flaming Ox twice and both times, the food was great! I ordered the 12 hour Bone broth beef noodle soup both times since it was so delicious and the broth had such a depth of flavor. Highly recommend to ask for the chili oil on the side; their chili oil is amazing, next time I'm there I'm going to ask to buy a jar of it to-go. I tried both the thick noodle and thin noodles, and for your first time, I'd recommend getting thin, but I did enjoy the thick noodles. I also got the 1/2 beef and 1/2 tendon for an extra dollar and both the beef and the tendon were capital T tender. The tendon was the perfect texture, not too tender, but not chewy at all. The service was amazing, Bonnie was very attentive and would check on our table a few times if we needed anything or refills on water. The place is a little small, so I'd highly recommend going in groups of 4 or less. I love the decor and the paintings on the walls, and the overall vibe of the restaurant. Recently had the pleasure of visiting this restaurant and had a great experience. I am so happy a place like this opened around where I lived. Food: I opted for the Malaa Noodles and Eggplant Appetizer. The highlight was definitely the tender beef slices and melt-in-your-mouth tendon, this dish surprised me with its quality at a great price. Sometimes beef at these places will stick to your teeth but this doesn't at all. I think it is worth it to get the 50/50 tendon because the tendon was pretty special. Its super soft and tender, I didn't know tendon's texture can be like this. The broth was delicious and boasts a rich, complex flavor that smacks you in the mouth. The noodles themself felt like the freshest noodles Iv ever had the beef was ever so tender feeling like it was slow roasted for hours on end and the MaLa soup base was flavorful and so deceptively spicy i didn't even notice until i drank water and my mouth was numb! The service was quick and friendly and it's definitely neat to be able to see everyone cooking and working so hard like an open air market complete with the hustle and bustle vibes, even with everything going on they never wavered in making sure my needs were met with water refills and extra napkins! There's plenty of parking in the shopping center and it's located right at the corner next to the Sizzling Lunch and Chipotle. The pickled cabbage was super refreshing, and the green onion pancakes were nice and crispy. Mala Beef Noodle Soup: Now for the star of the show. Let me tell you: it was AMAZING! My mouth is watering even thinking about it. The broth was spicy (warning) but in a good way! The beef was so tender, it falls apart when you try to pick it up and the best part is -- it doesn't get stuck on your teeth!! That is a huge plus. Absolutely blown away by the flavor of the Mala Beef Noodle Soup! The soup was super flavorful, the heat was just right, and the meat was break in your chopsticks tender. I finished my bowl before I remembered to take a pic . The eggplant appetizer was delicious. It was cooked nicely and the sweet sauce added great flavor. I honestly never had Century Egg outside of porridge before but it did not disappoint. One of the most unique appetizer's i've had and i'll definitely be ordering it again! I had this place bookmarked for a bit. And then they were closed for a bit for maintenance or an emergency. They finally opened up and went a couple weeks ago on a Friday. Fridays are a cluster f - in this parking lot. I think there's a lot of restaurants in this plaza, in addition to AA and City Sports. We found parking but a bit farther away. Anyways we arrived just before noon, and grabbed the second to last table outside. Inside was busy and the longer we sat there, more and more people showed up to wait. Anyways the menu is not too big. They have 4 noodle options, 3 rice options, some appetizers and drinks. We were all craving noodles, so I got the #C3, the plainer bone broth option and my co-workers got C1 the traditional (mild spicy) beef noodle soup. We ordered through a QR code and put in the order online. Make sure you hit submit or they won't get your order. And everyone can do it separately on their phone since the QR code is tied to your table. They will bring you one check at the end. Like I said, it was pretty busy so our food took a bit to come out. They pretty much came in, in the order that we put in our orders. I really liked my bone broth. Without the spice, it was still had deep and strong flavors. I also got it with the thick needles, which was pretty hearty. It came with 304 slices of beef and veggies. It was yummy and filling. My co-workers liked their spicy noodles. It also comes with a little container of chili oil, which they both added for additional spice and seemed to really enjoy also. Oh and we got popcorn chicken to share. I think we got it medium - a bit too spicy for me so I only had a few pieces but a good app. Maybe I'll come back to try their rice. Noodle soups were $16-17 and with the app,, tax and tip, it came out to be about $25 per person. A very delicious lunch. I hope they stick around. They kept telling us another 5 min but we didn't get seated until 40 min later. Their excuse was there was no table to fit 7 people, but eventually asked if we could split up since there was no big table (after such a long time of waiting?). The food was mediocre, mala one was very spicy, broth one was too peppery. Tendons were overcooked, pork chop was very dry. The braised pork sauce was minced pork sauce (false advertisement). The food is not authentic nor good in anyway. It says thick noodles are sold out but we saw a huge bag of thick noodles in the kitchen. Don't really recommend this place. read more

We went to Flaming Ox a few months back, and we found their beef soup noodles delicious. We all had variations of their beef noodle soup: mild and spicy. Their spicy isn't super spicy (I consider myself a middle-weight), but it had enough spiciness to give it a mild kick without dominating over the beef broth. The beef was good and tender. My parents and my family all enjoyed the food and plan to go back. I will add that my brother and his family all ordered rice plates (not sure what they ordered, but someone definitely ordered the fried pork chop). They felt the marination wasn't enough and considered the pork chop bland. read more

The beef was the most tender I've had at a restaurant without the pieces falling apart, and the broth had layers of rich flavor while still tasting light and clean. It didn't leave any oiliness on the palate or a yearning for water. Thick noodles were solid with the right amount of bounce. Scallion pancake was thin and crispy, not dense or oily.
