I've lived in the neighborhood for years, and Flora King is the gem we have been waiting for. Coming from a cattle ranch background, I eat steak often and I know my cuts. Too many places these days try to pass off 'Upper 2/3 Select' as Prime, but not here. ​I had the New York Strip tonight, and it was a true Prime cut--cooked to a flawless medium-rare. On my last visit, the Ribeye was equally spectacular. ​The attention to detail here is incredible. The steak came with these unique house chips--somewhere between a kettle chip and a french fry--that were absolutely addictive. They also brought out 4-5 different sauces (spicy, smoky, aioli) that complemented the meat perfectly. ​I've dined at International Smoke (the Mina/Curry spot), and honestly? Flora King beats them on service and value. While the service at the big downtown spots is 'correct,' the service here is warm, intuitive, and friendly--like going to a best friend's house for dinner. ​This is an incredible Argentinian steakhouse with fair prices and top-tier meat. This spot has seen a lot of turnover across the years and now it hosts an Argentine restaurant. Sadly, it wasn't that busy on a Saturday night. The food was delicious though, so I hope word gets out. Vino La Provoleta: If I'm at an Argentine restaurant and I see provoleta, I must get it! I'm a huge cheese lover, duh! While I'm used to an oversized cut of provolone from the loaf, theirs was more fondue-like. The spices and veggies gave it some good personality. New York Strip (Happy Hour): After an afternoon show, got in a little after 5pm and happened upon Happy Hour. It was $45 for a steak meal and a glass of malbec, which seems like a good deal nowadays in San Francisco. The steak was a thin cut, but high quality. It was cooked quick to get a sear on the outside and still be a little pink on the outside. While it won't win any steakhouse awards, it did remind of the thin cut grilled style of Argentine meat that I like so much. The side of haystack carrots was so nice! It kinda tasted like they were deep fried then sauteed. The Brussels Sprouts were seared, so had that nice caramelized taste. It looked a little small at first, but was quite filling. Cuatro Leches Trifle: Why settle for Tres Leches when you can have Cuatro Leches??? The fourth leche was dulce de leche, another must at Argentine restaurants. Also check for their lovely happy hour special for wine and cocktails -- they were also very patient as we asked lots of questions about the different beverage options. Dinner definitely did not disappoint -- was delicious and fresh! they have a variety of options on the menu, but are also true to their Argentinian meat lovers roots. So thrilled to see Flora King thriving! This Argentinian gem has seriously delicious food, and the owner and chef are absolute sweethearts. I went when they first opened, but on my latest visit I was gagged (in the best way) -- the menu has totally expanded, especially the starters, which now have so many fun, exciting options. As a vegetarian, I was living for the cheese plates -- three to choose from? Yes please. The mains blend European and Argentinian flavors with fresh, high-quality NorCal ingredients, and everything we tried was a total hit. The staff was so friendly and made the whole experience feel really warm and welcoming. The portions were a little generous for me (I like to leave room for dessert, what can I say), but my friend cleaned his plate like a champ. I'm genuinely so excited to see this place continue to grow -- it's already a neighborhood favorite for us locals and a perfect spot to show off SF's fabulous food scene to out-of-towners. The new space here where Firewood was has been updated to be more of an upscale experience with a large bar across the back wall and small tables along the front window where there used to be a high bar looking out. The interior is bright and cheery, including the back dining space which has skylights to brighten the area. Service was excellent and genuinely warm. We started with a house made beef empanada, very nice as a shared starter. The Greek Andina salad was excellent! With warm quinoa, drizzled with chimichurri and lemon-tahini dressing, ripe tomatoes, pickled red onion, spicy fresh cucumbers, Kalamata olives, and tangy feta. For our main dish we shared the Barcelona pizza with prosciutto, pear, applewood-smoked ham. This also was very good. All in all a great dinner out, slightly off the main hustle of Castro Street. Chef Angela Garat of Flora King hosted my birthday party for around 90 people last weekend. It couldn't have gone better. The food - charcuterie plates, salads, pizzas, and ice cream sundaes - was top-notch. My guests absolutely LOVED it. Service was terrific - folks felt welcomed, the atmosphere was friendly and very comfortable, and food was delivered over a period of about 3 hours in a timely way, but we never felt rushed. Kudos to both the kitchen staff and the servers for pulling off such a great evening in a way that appeared effortless. The price was reasonable, too. The restaurant lends itself to events of various sizes. There's a bigger room in the back, and a smaller room on the side. Lots of options. Angela was a joy to work with. Organizing this event together with her was an easy as could be. We are lucky to have a talented chef like her running the show here now - for many of us who have lived in the neighborhood a long time, the space brings back a lot of good memories. My husband and I also had a couple of meals here myself before the party. The food is very good, and it's nice be able to get something at a lower price (like pizzas and salads) or splurge a little (with a steak, say), depending on what you are in the mood for. read more

This is the third time back at Flora King. We stopped by for a glass of wine but ended up also adding on two awesome desserts that I managed to snag pictures of: cuatro leches cake and the affogato with the most delicious ice cream I have had in years. On our other two visits we opted to do a full sit down dinner. Some of the food items that were standouts included the empanadas, lamb steak, and pizza with goat cheese. Every single item that came out was more delicious than the previous one. I don't say this lightly, but its the kind of place you come home from (like I did a few hours ago) and you keep thinking about the food and wishing you had brought home more for the following day. It's also exciting to see new dishes getting added in between our visits. It keeps every meal exciting. I want to give an extra shoutout to the empanadas. I have had empanadas from so many different countries and so many different restaurants. You never the country and the corner of the world, and I have tried it. Hands down, Flora King's empanadas are within the top 3 for me. Tonight's visit we also had the pleasure of meeting Angela, the owner. Her candor, the restaurant's story, and the feeling she puts into every single dish was so touching to hear about. I especially loved hearing about the way in which every dish is both traditional but includes small family owned enhancements that make them unique / personal to her family. Our conversation turned what was supposed to be a quick night cap into an extremely memorable experience. Overall, every time everything has been absolutely delightful every visit. From the Argentinean boleros playing in the background, to the friendly staff, to the delicious food. As someone who grew up working in a Latin American restaurant, it made me feel so at home and nostalgic in the best kind of way. Third time back at Flora King, & compelled to write a review. The ambiance is great, whether sitting at the bar, or in the front against the huge windows, or with the gorgeous skylight in the back area, it's a great place to have a meal. The food takes notes from Argentinian cuisine, but the Chef has her own spin on this. The empanadas are delicious, and the pastry is very reminiscent of my visits to Buenos Aires, but the fillings are adventurous, delicious, and high quality. They have a classic rotating meat-filled empanada, but thePurple empanada filled with goat cheese & blueberries is unlike anything I've had before (and is great as a pizza, also on their menu), and there's even a pecan pie empanada. The Provoleta cheese appetizer truly did transport me back to the Parilla restaurant in BA. But they also deviate even further. My partner got the Chicken Breast, which was wonderfully boneless, had a very crisp top crust, yet was still very juicy. This was paired with a large helping of an orange-kale salad, with subtle asian flavors. The Lamb pizza I got had punchy savory flavors, & with a generous drizzle of a creamy mint sauce. That sauce was everything, I'm so glad I got a side of it. As for Dessert, would highly recommend the Cuatros Leches, with a fresh strawberry coulis, as well as the new dessert: Choco Torta. The Choco Torta had crunchy cocoa cookies, layered with a creamed Dulce de Leche that was so rich, but I couldn't stop eating it. The wine list is fairly extensive, and the glasses I've had so far are delicious. No full liquor license, but they are creative in using low-proof alternatives to make cocktails. Considering the dearth of quality dining options in The Castro, I was excited to try out Flora King. While the ambiance was bright and welcoming with abundant natural light and beautiful detailing, the excess of hard surfaces conspired with the lack of any apparent sound dampening and the too-loud music to made hearing my fellow dinner companions--and our friendly but soft-spoken waiter--utterly impossible. Considering the restaurant was only about 1/3 full, I can't imagine the noise levels were there to be a full house. Prior to our arrival, I spent time with the menu on their website, and I genuinely looked forward to this meal. My group ordered a good blend of starters and entrees, as well as one of their signature (virgin) cocktails, but at every turn, every single item was an utter disappointment. I don't know if the chef is under the guidance of a medical professional who's instructed them to refrain from consuming salt, but the utter lack of it in every dish meant that we were struggling to taste anything. I know that different folks have different salt tolerances, but its absence was notable. APPETIZERS: Mendoza Empanada I love empanadas. Truly. But Flora King's offering didn't even clear the low bar I've come to expect in SF. Dry dough, bland filling, and an absence of seasoning. "Made without lard, using butter and egg" should've been the warning. Not offensive, just completely forgettable. Provoleta, California Style Described as "Thick-cut provolone, slow-melted in the pizza oven until golden and bubbling." What arrived resembled a manhole cover of provolone floating in an oil slick. The pizza dough "bread" meant for dipping was limp and ineffective--less a carb and more a casualty. House Fries with Dips Fries were fine. The dip, however, tasted like off-brand BBQ sauce mixed with mayo. If you've ever been babysat by a bored 5-year-old with access to condiments, you've had this dip. MOCKTAILS: We ordered the "fresh strawberry" drink, recommended by our server. What came out looked--and tasted--like spicy tomato juice in a Tajin-rimmed martini glass. The lime wedge garnish mocked us. It was barely drinkable. Vodka wouldn't have saved it. ENTRÉES: Capresse (as Calzone) My friend ordered the "Capresse" pizza in calzone form. What arrived was a dry, joyless hot pocket missing both tomato and basil. He had to request marinara twice--and when it came, it too lacked flavor. Also, "Capresse" is not a word. Not in Italian, not in Spanish. Maybe in Esperanto? Tornado Tournedos "Delicate slices of small pork tenderloin, wrapped in bacon and pan-seared to perfection." What arrived: dry, muted, miniature discs of pork with no flavor. Even the bacon couldn't save it. The plating promised more than the dish could ever deliver. Francisco's Pork Tenderloin 'Milanesa' A thin, crispy breaded pork cutlet that managed to look both sad and severe. Tasted like a compromise. "Argentine style" in the same way ketchup is a vegetable. Don't cry for this "Milanesa." Just pass on it. Mendoza Lamb Steak This was supposed to be my moment. I love lamb. What I received were three sad, overcooked riblets--not the leg the menu promised. Six bites, max, including chewy connective tissue. No gaminess, but no seasoning either. The "zesty mint-apricot chimichurri" was neither zesty nor memorable. Even the side slaw had more taste. FINAL THOUGHTS... At ~$60/person for our group of four, with no alcohol, Flora King felt like an unnecessary extravagance. However, if the food was actually delicious, I would gladly return. But, in the end, the verdict of the group was unanimous: we look forward to seeing which restaurant comes into this space next. read more

Flora King is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. We've ventured in a handful of times and have had a great variety. I highly recommend dropping in for a meal or even sitting for a cocktail or app just to pass time. The space is vibrant and the staff is very welcoming. Heading into the food. The empanada dough is flakey in a great way and the filling is packed with flavor. We've had lamb (lamb burger and the bariloche from a former menu). The bariloche was unreal and one of the best lamb dishes I've had. Their lamb menu has rotated but I wouldn't look past the additions. We've also had both types of their Milanese and both had a crispy seasoned crust that are worth the try. French fry lovers will not be disappointed with their generous portion of fries which are well seasoned. In addition to fries with main entrees, we've had the scramble gramajo--pure comfort food with eggs, bacon, fries, and cheese. Despite all of the items getting tossed in, the texture was excellent and held up for an enjoyable shared dish. The love doesn't stop with the main entrees. Their desserts have consistently been refreshing. The Cuatro Leche Trifle has several layers of flavor that I could eat any day. Cake, cream, dulce de leche, and strawberry? Can't go wrong. The flourless chocolate cake is also rich and the ice cream is a perfect addition. If you love coffee and ice cream, why not drown each in the other with the affogato. I'm sure I'll frequent just for dessert on more days because these have been great. My exposure to drinks hasn't been as extensive. The Buenos Aeries Spritz caught my attention the first time and that's all I've had. It's really refreshing and worth getting on a warm day. read more

Two weeks ago I spotted this place on Instagram one morning before heading to the Balloon Museum, and the second I heard "milanesas," I knew we had to check it out! I was craving something cozy, like a real Sunday dinner -- and wow, they delivered. The food was as well i've been wanting to try this new restaurant and walk past several times but I thought it was a great opportunity to go when they first open. For King is decorated very beautifully in transition from one restaurant to another and made it its own. The decor was warm and welcoming and made me feel like I was in a different part of the world. We started out with an appetizer and empanada and had ordered a pizza where we shared it along with ending the meal with a great dessert that was recommended by Nico. Can't wait to go back to try other menu items. Our Sunday dinner at Flora King was splendid! The atmosphere inside is so welcoming, open, and relaxed, and the staff are so friendly. And the food is SO good. The lamb steak special was some of the best lamb I've had in the city and the cuatro leches cake we got for dessert was absolutely crazy good. There's awesome flavors on the menu that go beyond what I usually have found at Argentinian places around the bay - the empanada appetizer with blueberries and chèvre was incredible! There's a great wine list and a good looking cocktail menu too. We're definitely coming back soon to try the pizza and more of the desserts! I really cannot get over how unique and comfortable the vibe in here is, I can tell it would be awesome for brunch. read more

I've now been to FK about 4 times, and all my experiences there have been excellent so far. Food: I always appreciate things that surprise me, and that's been a huge part of my love for FK. There's some takes on classic Argentine food, but always with their own twist - like the Pork Milanesa, or the Scrambled Gramajo (which was a great dish to try during their weekend brunch hours, with scrambled eggs and crispy fries all mixed up like a delicious hash). And their recent addition of the Provoleta made me extremely happy. I had the simpler California version, basically a large hunk of semi-melted slightly-crispy cheese with bread; get it to share unless you're an absolute cheese fiend. The Pork Castro Tournados have been a favorite since they first opened, and they've never disappointed me. And their pizza is also quite delicious, just slightly more bready than ultra-thin neapolitan, with great inventive flavors like the Purple Blue Pizza (blueberries, blue cheese, chevre... yum!), or the lamb one with a mint chimichurri drizzle. For dessert, the Cuatro Leches Trifle (with an almond cake base) is an absolute must-have! And their ice-cream from Angela's is great. Drinks: I've found their cocktails quite interesting, with some creative use of non-liquor alcohols. The wines I've tried have been consistently good, and the staff has been really helpful when choosing either option. Service: We've always been treated very warmly, but things were a little slow during the soft opening while they worked things out. I'm really glad to say things have improved a lot, and we had the perfect amount of attention from our waitstaff throughout our meal. Prices are quite fair for a new restaurant that's aiming for high quality and good service. Ambiance: I don't pay much attention to ambiance, but the place looks a lot brighter now compared to the old restaurants here. There's a lot of additional seating in the back patio, and it feels cozy and inviting. If you like having new and unexpected gems in the Castro that make for a nice dinner out, please support this place! So glad I dined here early on because I know that it is going to be very popular. First of all, you walk into a bright, open, high-ceiled space that is most welcoming . . . and then there are two other very different spaces to enjoy including a light filled, spacious room in the back. All who works here -- especially Executive Chef/Creative Director Angela Pryor Garat -- make you feel like friends rather than customers.
