A Boise tradition in my family. My dad loves this place and has been coming for 20 years when we visit in the summertime. It's a memory- and walking in the door you can tell a lot of people have memories at this place! Murals, customer art, and a giant foil ball add character to this place that you can't get many places. We've done the lunch buffet in the past, but this year we opted for salad bar and a few pizzas to share during dinner time. Their salad bar has a lot to choose from- 4 varieties of lettuce, 6 or so dressings, and many other salad toppings and sides. Th pizzas do takes some time, but they're yummy! We got sour dough crust on a chicken/garlic/white sauce pizza, ham/pineapple, and some sort of pizza covered in meat. Their sausage looks a little like ground beef but it's definitely sausage. I am on vacation for a baseball tourney and I wanted to stay in the hotel and eat. I got a ham and cheese pizza, my mom got a vegetarian pizza, and my dad got a Samoan pizza. Right when they were brought in the hotel room it instantly smelled like nice pizza. Right when I opened the box it looked like a REAL quality pizza with real cheese and ham. Immediately when I bit into my pizza my mouth was watering because of the melty cheese and warm ham. My dad said he would give it 5 stars and said the cheese was amazing and my mom said her salad was great, it had a lot of dressings to choose from which come on the side and all do the croutons. "Whirled Famous." Ha! One of the best things about ordering pizza from here, is that I actually have left-over pizza, that I'm not in a hurry to eat. Why do I have leftover pizza? Because, it's gross and didn't leave me wanting more. So, I'll have a reasonable representation of something pizza-like that I can heat up over the next few days, and not feel like I'm over-indulging, as I'm prone to do with pizza. Simply put, I don't get the LOVE for this place. I've been trying off and on for 30+ years to like this stuff, so I occasionally order once every few years when I decide to mix it up and try something different. Note to future self: "Don't be an idiot! Quit ordering from here!" I ordered a pepperoni pizza, and the pepperoni is just barely warmed up enough to be greasy. It's not crispy, or cooked enough to fully get all the grease to mix in with the cheese, sauce, and dough. Whatever cheese they use is that long stringy kind, but that just means it all ran into a thick cheese puddle in the middle of the pizza, leaving the crust end of each slice to look a little lonely, almost "scalped" as it were. I ordered some sourdough-crust bread sticks with cheese and bacon, and these were actually pretty good- FAR better than the pizza itself. Although I don't usually need any kind of sauce to dip bread sticks in, these came with some marinara-looking stuff in two little cups. After trying it, I can only assume it was tomato paste with Mrs. Dash, or some kind of Sysco-brand Italian seasoning mixed in. Straight to the garbage went that poor excuse for dipping sauce. And, straight to the garbage, will likely be what happens with most of the pizza. For what I paid, I could have had two pizza from Idaho Pizza, which is far superior. Heck, I'd rather have had 8 frozen Red Baron pizzas. Sorry Flying Pie. I simply don't get it, even though I really want to. read more

My husband and I ate out on their patio and I stepped in a giant pile of dog crap (side note I love that a lot of Boise restaurants allow dogs on patios ). The waiter just laughed and said "oh how did that get there hahaha" and handed me a paper towel and empty bucket to clean it up?! I asked for at a wet towel to wipe off my shoes. After we left I called to talk to the manager because the employee did not handle the situation well (not because of the dog poo, sh*t happens I get it). The manager didn't apologize but instead just made excuses for the behavior and laughed as well...it wasn't funny...it was straight sh*tty, literally. The pizza was just not good, with a bean pizza that tasted horrible and the basic cheese pizza having a "off" taste. Just not good. We ordered pizza from Flying Pie on a Saturday night hoping to enjoy some yummy food... Unfortunately that's just not what worked out. We ordered two chicken pizzas and for the price of a 10 inch I certainly expected a lot more. Firstly, the crust was undercooked. There was absolutely no color to it, it looked like raw dough. I thought maybe it was a fluke but it was like that for both pizzas. Secondly, no matter how amount of salt added onto the pizzas they honestly had no flavor. I took a bite of chicken all by itself, and it was flavorless. On top of that when eating the pizza as a whole it didn't taste like anything, but in some weird way even though we got two different pizzas they tasted the same? Lastly, I could only eat two pieces before my stomach started acting funny, and let's just say Saturday night did not go as planned. Whether it was a combination of undercooked dough or some thing else, both husband and I had upset stomachs. Unfortunately, whether we got unlucky or not, I will not be back to Flying Pie nor will I recommend it. read more

There used to be a local chain of pizza joints where I grew up in Arizona called Pistol Pete's Pizza. They had the absolute best pizza. It was fluffy on top, crispy on the bottom and tasted heavenly. My dad used to take me there on Fridays, and it was also the venue of choice for honor roll luncheons. Then the franchise all but disappeared, its prior establishments now occupied by the average Peter Piper Pizza or the below average Chucky Cheese...and I've been on the search for the perfect pizza ever since. Then my husband told me about this place in Boise I just had to try. We walked in, and there was something familiar about the smell (besides the obvious.) We placed our order and they gave us a playing card. I remembered that Pistol Pete's used playing cards, too; purely coincidental, mind you...in fact, other unrelated pizza joints in other states utilize similar methods. Still, I had a good feeling. Sure enough, when they brought out my hand-tossed cheese pizza and I took my first bite, I was all but showing my "O face." It was like my beloved Pistol Pete's pizza all grow'd up. The sauce wasn't as sweet, but the crust was that perfect blend of fluffy on top and crispy on the bottom, and the cheese was wonderfully gooey. Service is negligible but the pizza is consistently great, at least when you dine in. We only ordered takeout once, and it didn't seem to be up to their usual standard. They even deliver beer, but we've never taken advantage of that. The restaurant is fairly family friendly, and often rowdy. Today we were sitting near an especially colorful group that liked to sing and speak loudly, but I can't complain about the noise considering our little angels were on less than angelic behavior. Parking is limited so I'd recommend giving it a try on a quiet afternoon instead of the busier evenings. It's pricy but wort a try. read more

Review is based on delivery. Can't say I've ever been into the restaurant before. HOWEVER, it is fantastic for delivery! Not gonna lie... I actually had it two out of three nights. I had a personal size pizza the first night, and it was so good that I got another one ordered to my hotel room a couple nights later. Speaking of hotel, they deliver to the Hyatt Place nearby, which I found to be quite nice. In terms of the pizza, it was loaded with flavorful toppings, there was a good amount of cheese, the delivery guy was friendly, and it was NOT greasy. Whether on the phone or in person, they are always friendly and helpful. Plus...when you go in, they are downright enthusiastic about their pizza making. There are hoots, bells being rung, and orders zipping along a clothes line to pizza flingers in the back....it's very chaotic, in a totally cool way, you know, NOT in a chuckecheese sorta way. -Their Pesto Primavera specialty pizza...pesto, artichoke hearts, garlic, SHARP cheddar...seriously, it's just freaking ridiculous. -Their Mesquite Chicken pizza. This one isn't for everyone as it does have a light BBQ sauce as it's base--so nothing traditional about this pie--but my gosh, for a pizza with a decidedly American flare--yum. I like the Garlic Chicken and Bermuda Triangle (three onion) pizzas the best, but the Broccoli & Tater is growing on me! Hubby likes the No-Veggie Pie-Way (all meat). I make a point to try at least one bite of every flavor offered at Gourmet Pizza Night, and I'm often pleasantly surprised that I enjoy pizzas that I normally would not have ordered. Check their Web site for the listings of which pizzas are available at which location on a given Tuesday. They also have an all-you-can-eat option at lunch time on weekdays. Yum! The salad bar has a modest number of selections, but plenty of goodies to make a fresh & tasty salad. The "It's Your Day!" is a total blast. Keep an eye on their sign or Web site to find out when it'll be your day. They have a person's name or an attribute (Dad & I went on "Been to Switzerland Day"). You get to make your own pizza, for free, any way you want it. Lots of beer selections, and they can even add beer to your delivery. In my experience, they've been pretty generous with samples to let you try how the various beers might go with your pizza choice. They layout of this particular restaurant is odd. It seems to be pieced together -- maybe they acquired different parts of the building at different times? However, the chopped-up nature of the place makes it perfect to get a fairly private area of 10 or so tables if you come with a large group.
