Our new hang out spot after we got crappy ass service at The Office. Three of us came out for some dinner and ended up getting some good food and beer along with some very friendly service. We started out with two pitchers of strong (8.0%+) beer and ordered two 12 inch pizzas (buy one, get the second one half off). A few minutes after we sat down, we got complimentary breadsticks. The beer was great - and before long, our pizza arrived. We got the "No Vegy" and "Triple Pie" - I liked the triple pie - sausage, bell peppers, and jalapenos with red pepper baked into the cheese AND crust. Mmm... The place seems to close relatively early on weekdays (10:30pm), but if you're already inside and just want to have a drink until they finish closing, the staff is willing to let you chill for a while. I'm thinking we'll be dropping by this place more often =) UPDATE: $20 growlers + servers that remember you is AWESOME. This is the best pizza in Boise. I am always trying to find an excuse to hit up Flying Pie. All of their pizzas are top quality (especially my favorite, the Garlic Chicken). We've eaten at the restaurant and have had take out numerous times and always have great pizza. The sourdough crust is amazing and they have a great local beer selection on tap. The Fairview restaurant is the original and it's definitely got character. Connor has made us several of his creations including a chicken garlic with cream cheese pizza along with a honey drizzled crust. Amazing. I ask for so few things in life. One the simplest things a person can ask for, is a large circle of dough, with NO vegetables and a heck of a lot of meat. I ordered a pizza and salad through Yelp for delivery. The pizza arrived as ordered, though the salad had none of the items I had requested, nor did it arrive with any salad dressing, and the restaurant added charges to my order for the extra items that were not included when delivered. It is apparent that whomever packaged this order for deliver took NO care to actually read the order and attempt to include what was ordered. When I called to inform the restaurant of its mistake, not asking for the ordered but not received items to be delivered, but requested a credit for extras I had not received, I was greeted with a very rude person who told me it was not their problem and to call Yelp to complain. Very poor employee training on filling an online order, and worse training and expectations for customer service. Order elsewhere. read more

My buddies and I took the risk and stopped here on a whim. That was probably the decision we've made in Boise so far (we're here from California for work). The vibe is very, very chill. The service is fun and personal: they actually care about their customers, which is a rarity these days. The pizza was delicious, and the nitro beer that was recommended to me was heavenly. On top of it all: they have vintage arcade games in the back and play great music. Any place that plays bands like Less Than Jake and Rancid are great in my book. I found this very local pizzeria less than a mile from my hotel and decided to give it a try. There were several options on the menu and the smell from the outside was an authentic pizzeria (not a chain). Though I can't remember exactly what I ordered, I think it was a #1 w/out mushrooms and it was perfect. An order of breadsticks with marinara was also brought to the table, must have been complimentary. The scenery was also very warming with some pretty hip music playing as well. So. I love flying pie. Their pizzas are wonderful. But i have a special review. It is New Year's Eve and my son who is 7 and I are both sick sick sick. In bed sick. My mom, who lives in grants pass Oregon, loves flying pie from her visits here. She wants to send us a pizza. I love my mom so much but things like this become a big hassle with her because she is legally blind and she has a hard time reading her credit card number. Long sorry short, 5:30 on New Year's Eve, I'm CONFERENCE CALLING my mom in with a busy busy pizza shop--because he can't get the number to work, waiting while my stepdad gets on the phone from a holiday party to read the correct credit card number... Long-time Boise native. I really enjoy Flying Pie's pizza, this review isn't about their food it's about a terrible online ordering and delivery experience. First of all it would appear that Flying Pie doesn't really deliver themselves, they have a relationship with DoorDash to do their deliveries. This fact doesn't appear to be disclosed in their new online ordering capability, at least not in any obvious way if in fact it is. Anyway so after ordering online every thing seems cool. I get a text from Flying Pie that my order left the store. Awesome, right? Actually not so awesome. The next thing I hear about my order is from DoorDash. Huh? When did DoorDash come into the picture? Whatever, my pizza is supposed to be 10 minutes away, I'll let it slide. The problem is my pizza actually isn't 10 minutes away. I get a text from DoorDash, apologies but my delivery is delayed. Ugh, whatever, I want the pizza so what I am going to do? Yep, wait. Another text, please tell me my pizza is coming. Nope another delay. Ok so now I'm getting really bummed, I look at the map and see my pizza flying the opposite direction of my house. What the heck! I text DoorDash and hear back, oh sorry delivering another order ahead of yours, but don't worry I'm keeping your pizza under my seat so it'll stay warm. Wow, excellent news, my pizza is being kept warm under the seat of someone's car I don't know who has now had my pizza for more than 30 minutes. I know you're probably thinking the same thing I was at this point, I hope this person is a clean freak because if you've ever looked under the average car seat, well my car seat at least, it's not a place you'd want to put anything you intended eat. I'm over it all at this point. I gather up the family and we head out in search of decidedly non-Flying Pie take-out. There are a lot more details I haven't conveyed in this story but it ends with a text from DoorDash letting me know they managed to deliver the pizza 42 minutes after Flying Pie informed me it left their store. The best part? No one was home at this point so DoorDash decided to just leave the pizza on my front porch because, you know, they were still warm having been tucked safely tucked under the delivery person's car seat. Wow - what a cool pizza joint! They're not reinventing the wheel by any means with their pizzas, but its just got a rad vibe inside the place. In an age where fancy-pants pizza parlours are all the rage, bench seating with red pew-like couches and napkins holders still have a soft spot in my heart. Reminds me of hitting the local pizza house after a job well done on the baseball diamond as a wee beeb growing up in Fallbrook, CA. These kind of pizzas are hard to categorize. They're not thin crust, and they're not deep dish. They've just some good ol' Americanized pies ranging from cheese the usual suspects like pepperoni, meat lovers, etc... to more sophisticated offerings that I didn't expect from Boise, like pizzas with smoked Gouda, Linguiça, Percorino Romano and homemade pesto and red sauces, along with an option for sourdough or whole wheat crust. Say what? They have a pretty vast selection of amazing draft beers as well. Delirium, Chimay, Sierra Nevada, Paulaner, and a ton more. They even go as far as to suggest a pairing for any of the specialty pizzas you order, printed right in front of ya on the menu at your table. In addition to the seriously quality eats/drinks, it has a quirky collection of hipster kids, families of 6-8, greasers, bikers and cool music streaming from the kitchen like Kings of Leon, Queens of the Stoneage, et al. I hear it was featured on the Food Network, which could explain the crazy lines to get your grub on. Do yourself a favor and visit during the week. Always a good call... even in Boise. read more

Oh. My. God. Yelp and Man VS. Food, YOU LET US DOWN for the first time ever. We planned to go out of our way on our road trip from WA-SD-WA to hit Boise just to go here (and Big Jud's- another Man VS Food place) on the way back. What a bust, man. We ordered a #1 and a #2 from their menu, 12 inches. The place was pretty much empty, with a few tables who already had their food. We were told it would be 30-35 minutes. So, we sat down and waited (and I checked in on Yelp to help keep the time). And waited. And waited. I watched the guy making pizzas...and waited. I did see him put two pizzas in the warmer after about 55 mins, but he never called my name (I was watching and listening like a hawk) and then said he needed an order of breadsticks. Since we didn't have any breadsticks, I assumed it was for pick-up or something. I waited a few more minutes and then went up to ask someone. She said people usually check the warmer (which is behind the counter, where I would never feel comfortable crossing) themselves. Those two pizzas the dude put in the warmer were OUR pizzas and he NEVER called our name or thought..."hmmm...there are two people sitting at a table who have been there for an HOUR looking bored out of their f*cking mind...maybe I should ask them if these are their pizzas". I was really annoyed at that point. Had we not already paid, I would have left. Wish I hadn't given them a tip. Honestly, the pizza is nothing to write home about either. I thought it was average. Definitely not worth the wait. For the price, we could have gotten four Hot N Readies, which would have been equivalent aside from the extra toppings. The crust and sauce are identical to Little Ceasar's. They really play up the frat-esque decor and music to appeal to the college-age crowd. Great beer selection. One of the best in town. Pizza! The best...ever. Make sure you go in August and try the Triple-Pi pizza. Pizza tastes good. Yep. With that, let's take a look at the Flying Pie. The name comes from the fact that they throw their dough in the air. This place is a Boise landmark, partly because it was featured in that one show with that one guy. It's got a great personality and great employees. Cool things: - Every day they have a different first name on their sign. If you have that first name you get a pizza for free (idk if that's exactly how it works). - Great decorations and little details. The ice cube dispenser has a picture of Ice Cube on it. The ice tea machine has a picture of Ice T. - They have these "how was your experience" slips that you can draw pictures on. If the pictures are nice, they put them up on the walls. The interior kinda looks like if a music venue was under repairs and had to relocate one of their shows to Chuck E' Cheese. This is def a place you go to for the friendly experience, similar to Dutch Bros. And just like Dutch Bros, the product is a little bit disappointing compared to the experience. We got a med pepperoni and med Sam I Am. It cost $25 with drinks. Not the best price but reasonable. They gave us complimentary breadsticks which was very nice. The breadsticks were pretty regular. Imagine the crust of a Pizza Hut pizza. Nothing super impressive but for free! That made us happy. Pizza took a while, roughly 25 mins. We had the breadsticks though and were busy nitpicking everything anyway and talking about nerd stuff. -Pepperoni- It tasted like a Red Baron pizza. The cheese was very gooey which was nice, but also very oily. Just tasted like salt; there was no real cheese quality to it. Sauce tasted like generic tomato paste, like at a school cafeteria. Bread tasted like the breadsticks from before. The peps were the best part: crunchy with a classic pep flavor. -Sam I Am- This is a vegetarian za. Pesto sauce, tomatoes, garlic, and basil. Again, the bread was nothing special, but this time, the tomatoes on top were perfectly cooked. Tomatoes on top is always risky, sometimes they are slippery, sometimes they are all dried up. These were moist but not watery and they brought a ton of flavor. The roasted garlic was a really nice touch. Both of us liked this one much more but it still wasn't anything to be amazed about. -Verdict- Pizzas are nice but nothing special. The experience is important, however, and Flying Pie shares a wonderful experience.
