Great experience here -- came here mostly for the vibe / ambiance, was absolutely not disappointed! The walkway entrance in is designed like a classic theatre. Then, you're seated and a movie is playing in a big projector. There's little phone machines to listen to the movie, and there's heaters. Only downside is the strong wind gusts can make it a bit chilly at times (it's outdoors, but there's a cover on the rooftop), but with the heaters it's not too bad! Service was top tier. Wait staff were extraordinarily friendly, always checking in to make sure were good. We were never kept waiting long, and they gave good recommendations when asked. Our friend went to the restroom, and they even brought out a plate cover for her food to make sure it didn't go cold -- I was very impressed by how observant they were to this and how prompt the response was! Food was also very good. We ordered the lavender scented baked goat cheese, which was warm and creamy. Also got the tuna ceviche, which was flavorful -- lots of lime and avocado! Slightly on the more citrus-y end if you like that. Our last appetizer was the creamy corn soup. It has a dash of cream, and was a hit amongst our group. Little corn bits throughout. In terms of individual entrees -- I got the wagyu steak. A perfect portion for an individual meal, the steak was well seasoned, and the onions and tomatoes were grilled. The food is just OK, and it ain't cheap. The bavette steak was very good, tender with a nice salty crust. From there, not much to write home about. The duck was good, but nothing special. And the apps were downright meh -- the charcuterie was minuscule and uninspiring and the hamachi was boring. Topping it off was the dessert -- a boring crostata, which was dry and lacked a punch. We made a reservation for 7pm on a Friday a month in advance - it was the first available weekend slot given how popular this restaurant is. I don't think it lived up to the hype unfortunately: there wasn't a movie playing when we visited as it was still too light outside to see anything, the food was hit or miss, the service was slow and lacking, and the prices were very high. Our waiter visited frequently to check in on us and replace plates/cutlery, but she leaned in way too close for comfort (even without the consideration of COVID...) Among the four of us, we ordered bread, three apps to share, and an entree each. Recommendations: Bernal bakery sourdough bread ($5) - highlight of the meal; perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft and airy on the inside. If you don't get a seat outside by the big screen no big deal. You still feel the breeze. And the food. Yum. Appetizers - the beef tartare was so creamy and the calamari was so good with melted cheese. It's not fried calamari, it's better! Entrees: Duck breast was perfect. The chef recommends medium for the duck, but I like my meat a lil more cooked and it turned out fine. The porcetta had a zesty tang that really gave it a different flavor. When we arrived (early) the host immediately greeted us, checked us in, and wished us a happy anniversary. He walked us to our table in the outdoor area right in the middle where we were able to see the movie, were covered still but had a heat lamp overhead. For our food, we ordered the ACME bread, fried green olives, and brandade. The bread and butter, amazing as expected. The fried green olives with the anchovies were surprisingly delicious to me. Lightly fried and tasty. The brandade, oh my wow. We could have literally gotten a few orders of this dish and had been happy. Definitely suggest ordering it to begin your meal along with anything else that might peak your interest. For the main, I got the fried chicken and my wife ordered the pork chop. We "shared" our dishes meaning she had a bite or two of my fried chicken and we split her pork chop. The fried chicken with the curry flavoring was a hit for me. Different than other fried chicken I have had in a good way. The pork chop, recommended by our server, was also delicious. I really enjoyed this restaurant and will be back again soon. My friend and I went for lunch and the food was excellent. Their chef has great taste and I was impressed with how well the dishes use texture and unique ingredients. The omelet we had used truffle oil and it was not overpowering and was absolutely delicious. Staff were friendly and knowledgable about the sites unique history. I was impressed with how the large open space kept noise volume down. The restaurant was full but my friend and I could have a conversation at normal to low volume. Sadly, this drink just didn't fit my palate--it was a bit too smoky and spicy. As for food, I shared the curry fried chicken and pork chop with a friend. The curry fried chicken, which came with rice and a myriad of sauces, was seasoned so uniquely--I'd never had a dish like this before. Very cool atmosphere! We have only been here a few times here and there for brunch and drinks. I'll be honest though, we mainly keep coming back for the aesthetic. No movies during brunch, so I would recommend coming for dinner. They have great tasting but expensive drinks. ~$20 for each weak cocktail with pretty much just bottom to lower mid shelf liquor. 3 cocktails and no buzz for $60 is not at all worth it to me. For all my hot girls out there, just FYI they don't serve Belvedere. If you ask nicely, they might give you a little Tito's. For brunch, food portions are somewhat small and the overall taste is just okay, leaning towards "fine." As a picky eater and a big egg hater, I have a hard time here finding anything on the menu that sounds particularly appetizing. I have tried the mixed fruit with yogurt, mint, and hazelnuts, croque monsieur, strawberry pop tart, oysters, and the slow cooked brown sugar bacon from their brunch menu. Out of these items, the only thing I have loved/would ever order again would be their strawberry pop tart. Dessert is by far my favorite thing offered here. They don't start the movie until it gets dark and there are speakers around the area. They're not too mound where you can still have table conversations and what not. The patio is a nice ambiance with lights around. Warner with heaters. Such great service they even offer blankets to warm guests!!! Our server was very knowledgeable of the menu and was eager to give us recommendations. They also change their menu pretty much daily Pork chop was good and moist with corn that was good but had a lot of the green on it . : Steak was good with the crouton. Foreign Cinema is a sultry spot nested right in the Mission. Their seating ranges from indoor to outdoor and my friend and I were lucky to have been seated outdoors! The ambiance was beautiful. We came for brunch on a Saturday with a reservation beforehand. Note: I had emphasized my dairy dietary restriction but unfortunately our order was messed up and contained dairy. I would highly recommend the Monterey calamari dish. The mole rojo sauce was rich, savory, and perfectly complemented the chewy calamari. The chips were also fresh and clearly fried in house. There was a dollop of sour cream, which I ate around. The tuna tartare was flavorful with a hint of onion. Delicious! I wish the ratio of the tartare to the yucca chips was more balanced. My friend and I were rationing the chips to make it work. Lastly, we ordered the Parsi scramble which I would not recommend. We originally wanted to order the omelette but the waiter said that the omelette is contains cheese and cream so she recommended we order this scramble instead. Unfortunately the scramble contained cheese, I tried a bite in the corner and it just tasted like cilantro. It was my friend's bday so she made reservations. I've wanted to try Foreign Cinema for a long time, and I'm glad I did. Their outdoor seating was beautiful. It was a little windy, but the heat lamps definitely helped. On a cold windy night, make sure to bring a hair tie if you have long hair or else you'd be eating your hair instead. They were playing a movie on the wall, but it was too noisy to hear the movie. Still, Foreign Cinema would make the cutest date spot or be perfect for an anniversary or any celebration because of the atmosphere. For my meal, I ordered a grilled kobe bavette. It was a very delicious meal and the steak was tender yet juicy. I chose medium rare for reference. The fries were salty and tasty, and the sauce that the dish came with was great. The sauce was so good that I wish I could buy a bottle of it to bring home. I was super satisfied with my meal and pretty full that I didn't have room for dessert. I took my family here to celebrate my daughter's sixteenth birthday. It was our first time at Foreign Cinema and I reserved this place because of the hype around it. The positives first... the ambience is indeed cozy and nice, although there were no movies playing. Maybe because it was still light out? Anyways, that's about it. I found the rest of the experience to be thoroughly mediocre. The food: the fried chicken dish used stale curry powder and there was no sesame taste in it at all. It was just not good. In any case, onto the famed fresh produce: yes, all the veggies etc. were super fresh and delish, but I want to see them cooked or worked on in some way. I am not paying so much money to have uncooked veggies dumped on my poorly cooked food. My husband ordered the duck dish. There was literally 2 bites of duck in it, and the rest of the plate was dumped with the hitherto mentioned fresh produce. The 8 year old got an "appetizer".. again, a bunch of chopped up fruit and veggies. He wanted extra cheese with his pasta, which we asked for but never came, so he left most of his pasta uneaten. (He has a thing for cheese sitting on top of his pasta. Granted, they did put lots of cheese on top of his pasta when it came out but, perhaps unreasonably, he wanted more). The salad? A strawberry, 2 pumpkin (or whatever) seeds, a few leaves, and a shaved piece of cheese. I can serve all this at home too. I have the nice ingredients. What did I come to Foreign Cinema for?? The hype around this place is probably totally faddish, with millennials conforming to what they think they are supposed to like. I have no other explanation for all the positive reviews. Or maybe we just caught Foreign Cinema on a bad day? Anyhow: The red wine by the glass....poor selections. The complimentary grapefruit shaved thing...too bitter. The birthday cake----super awesome. After all the movie "screenings" along the infamous courtyard wall is less of the rage than everything else this establishment presents: good food, good looking people, and ultimately, a beautiful restaurant. The place is incredibly spacious, with rustic overtones and a very classy, high end feel complete with outdoor and indoor spaces. The interior dining room is beautifully lit, with attention to some beautiful paintings, white tablecloth surroundings, coupled with excellent service. It is such a versatile space that it's hard not to envision celebrating special events here. The real star is the food as the presentation is excellent. Clearly the kitchen is ambitious with their execution, which is extremely food porn'y despite being such casual fare. Brunch is a popular time to be here and I haven't had a single bad dish yet. From burgers to egg scrambles to a seafood'y appetizer (oysters are fantastic!), they truly excel at it all. Any hearty loving glutton might find the portions to be lacking because ... they are. The price point is certainly on the higher end and much of the plates are meant for sharing, almost like tapas but somewhat reminiscent of ABC Kitchen in NYC. One should order a number of plates to enjoy their variety and also just to get close to satisfaction. The cocktails are a big part of their program and I can never say no to their seasonal libations. I think my favorite at the moment was the "call me by your name" cocktail, which is composed of Los Vecinos Espadin mezcal, grapefruit, lime, rich simple syrup, and firewater bitters. It is a great sipper and will wake anyone up. In the end, I always look forward to a quality meal at Foreign Cinema. The restaurant is known for playing oldies movies on the wall after a certain time, so if you're interested in that, be sure to make dinner reservations when the sun has begun to set (around 8 PM during summer time). The portions are kind of small so definitely would order more if you have a larger appetite. We got the charcuterie board, which was sort of underwhelming, but the mains were really good. I got the seasonal pasta which was delicious and my friends all liked their meals as well. Highly recommend trying the creme pot dessert, which seems to be the special that everyone recommends. We were here to celebrate Valentine's Day and Foreign Cinema delivered an unbeatable experience! It is adjacent to a movie theater and they play a movie in their courtyard seating. We were seated indoors however so did not get the special "Cinema view" but i will take warm table over cold air anytime! Our waiter was helpful but he was certainly pretty busy serving a lot of people so it felt at times the service was a bit slow. Nevertheless, he gave us wonderful suggestions on dishes. We started with the Bradade, which is essentially a ground-up fish paste with amazing flavors that you barely taste fish and the special toasted bread that goes with the dish is amazing and buttery. Then, we also shared a Leek soup and it was perfect for the cold weather that night. It was rich and savory. For entree, I got the Duck breast and hubby got the grilled Kobe steak. Both have plenty of flavor and cooked perfectly. We were both very pleased with our selections. My duck however, was a tab too cold and they offered to take it back and heat it up. However, we did wait for our entree quite a while and i didnt' feel like waiting more! They gave us a free Champagne ice on the house as a nice gesture! A few stand-outs: Organic fruit "Pop Tarts." If you're looking for a way to relive your childhood but in a classy way, these "Pop Tarts" are for you. Flaky crust sprinkled with the perfect amount of powdered sugar, filled with just the right amount of fruit to create a tangy balance. Croque Madame. If you're feeling gluttonous, get this hot sandwich chock full of ham and melted gruyere cheese, topped with an egg, and served with fries. Any drink. Whether you order one of their signature cocktails or select something from their extensive wine menu, it's bound to hit the spot and pair perfectly with your meal.
