I got it much later than people who ordered extravagant seafood food after me and was seated in between two huge families. One group was clearly related and eating for free. Their sick kids coughed without covering their mouths. Sometimes on the back of my neck. Their almond chicken was served like sweet and sour chicken. Most of the hot pots here are great-- try the beef tendon with daikon radish (they're super generous with the tendon) or lamb with ginger and green onion. The dried scallop soup is really fragrant and tasty as well. I also really enjoy the cold jellyfish appetizer with sweet daikon and carrots. David is the waiter there on pretty much every night. The wife and I have a huge problem with ordering too much food. We tried not to order too much food today, just ordering a few things and sharing, but it ended up being way too much food for my wife, son, and me. The sweet and sour chicken was very tasty. The sauce was less of a syrup than most usually are and was more savory than sweet. I really enjoyed it. We also ordered some egg rolls, they were not very good. The egg roll sauce was very sour but delicious. The third and final item we had was sweet and sour soup, one of my favorite Chinese food items. We ordered a large but forgot to actually ask about how large it was. That was a huge mistake that resulted in an even more huge bowl of soup. The soup was very good, but not my favorite. The wait staff was very friendly but they were really busy and a little slow to respond to requests. Never have I been disappointed. **TIME: Don't go in here expecting quick Chinese food. They do take a bit of time between courses but trust me when I say you'll grow to appreciate the wait. I feel like anybody who knows Seattle's Chinatown food scene understands that the 3.5 stars at $$ on yelp definitely misrepresents Fortune Garden. They are personally my favorite Cantonese restaurant in Seattle, although they do not do dim sum. On the outside the restaurant looks a bit worn down....but what restaurant in the ID doesn't?? I came in and was greeted by a soft spoken middle aged man dressed in all black. He was very friendly and handed me a menu when I asked to order takeout. Their menus are pretty fancy and covered in custom leather and lettering. The dining room is small at around 300 sf, but very clean and well decorated. There are intricate porcelain vases, mock bonsai cherry blossoms, and traditional Cantonese art throughout the dining room. And unlike most Chinese places in the ID, the tables and menus are not sticky. They also have a 125 gallon salt/fresh water tank by the front window that has fresh Dungeness, lobster and tilapia if you are craving seafood. There are about six pages on the menu, categorized by seafood entrees, dry noodle entrees, noodle soup entrees, rice entrees, chicken entrees, beef entrees, and pork entrees. Most entrees are around $9-11, and they also have lunch specials for $7.50 all week long. I ordered the beef chow fun. For 9 fiddy before tax, I was easily given enough for two adults. The beef was extra tender, and they really hook it up.....I could easily see my order being split in half and charging $8 elsewhere. When I left the server said "thank you can't wait to see you again next time." Overall Fortune Garden is clean, beautiful, has great service, fresh proteins, is open at odd hours, and cheap prices. I'm not sure what the other people on here are talking about, but this place is one of the worse Chinese food places I've been to in a LONG time. The only reason it gets 2 instead of 0 stars (because the food honestly deserves negative stars) is because they are one of the only restaurants in Chinatown to be open very late (2:30 am) and they had really good, friendly service. That is where the good experience ends! The food was absolutely gross; not one thing that we ordered was even edible, and we ordered a lot as a group: Wonton soup, house chow mein, cod stir fry, almond chicken, soy sauce chow mein, wonton lo mein, and Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. None of us liked a single thing we ordered, and we are NOT picky. I've been to many Chinese restaurants in many different cities, and while I do appreciate how extensive the menu is, and how authentic the idea behind the dishes is, none of that matters when the food is really sub par. In a nutshell: dirty, old interior with bad Chinese food, but with friendly service and good hours. My boyfriend and I ate the steamed tilapia and braised noodles for lunch with half of the noodles left over. Generous portions! FOOD: Steamed tilapia (5/5): Mmm, just as my mom makes it. Tender, melt in your mouth fish, topped with green onions and soaked in fish sauce/sesame oil/whatever else makes the marinade. This whole fish cost $25, and was a couple pounds. This, with a bowl of rice, would be enough to serve 2. Braised seafood e mian noodles (5/5): Totally hit the spot! Chewy noodles braised with fish, squid, shrimp, mushrooms, and pea sprouts. Huge portion for $12, and can be shared between 3 people. SERVICE: The ladies here were kind and motherly. Which was a first, maybe a second, for a Chinese restaurant in my experience. I am not used to having friendly service in Chinatown back in San Francisco, so this was a nice surprise. After we finished eating our waitress asked if we were full, and she was very patient when we were ordering. The restaurant is on the small-medium side, it can fit about 25-30 people. This place is churning out pretty good AUTHENTIC Chinese food for a really affordable price. They have your typical Americanized Chinese food too... but if you venture into their extensive menu a bit you can find more traditional entrees. Their mapo tofu was pretty good. The tofu is very soft and pillow-like, the pork, although cut into strips rather than ground was tasty, and the sauce really packed a punch of ginger and spice. It wasn't the best I've had, but it'll suffice. Their salt and pepper items are good... I was a little disappointed that they were so mild in spice; however the overall flavor was good. I'm not a fan of congee, but their version seemed very authentic and my companions seemed to like it. While we were there, a huge tray full of lobster passed by us and I immediately began looking through the menu to see what dish it was. I couldn't find it,but I'd definitely order that!! The duck, chicken, and noodle dishes all smelled wonderful!! The service was okay... they were really nice but it took forever to get our food!! There were several larger parties at the time, so I can't hold it against them. All in all, this place definitely is on my radar for great Chinese eateries in and around Seattle. Went in on a Wednesday night at eight. Very busy, were told to wait for a table. The food passing by us all looked and smelled delicious. Sat down and was given the menu which has over 200 items to choose from.. Got the hot steam bowl of tofu and seafood, the seafood was good but I picked around the tofu as it was fried and then was sitting in the sauce so it made for a juicy and oily bite. Service was okay, waiter or the kitchen forgot about one of the dishes that we order but it was busy so I wasn't upset about it. Loved the family style entrees and my fortune at the end. read more

Highly recommend this restaurant! Just went today with the family. Place was packed with it being Christmas Day. Staff was very nice and tried their best. Food was delicious and arrived quickly. We loved the fried salted pepper tofu, lemon chicken, sweet & sour prawns, Mongolian beef, general tso's chicken, sizzling beef short ribs with peppers, veggie chow mein and veggie fried rice. Started off with potstickers and spring rolls! We enjoyed them all and would gladly order them again but must haves were the tofu (amazing!), lemon chicken, sweet & sour, and potstickers. I had dinner here with my friend on a Saturday night. We arrived before 5:30pm, and were seated immediately. When we left, there was a long line waiting. It was a Cantonese restaurant, and they had big round tables for seating more than 10 people. A wide variety to choose from on the menu, and we ordered roasted duck, whole fish, lettuces and eggplant. We had half of the whole duck, which was enough for us two. The skin of the duck was crispy while the meat was tender, which made it great. The whole fish was steamed with green onions on top of it. It was really tender and not many bones. The lettuces were cooked with pepper and sufu, which were kind of special. The eggplant was cooked with green beans, carrot and sliced salted fish in a ceramic pot, which was a traditional way. The sliced slated fish made it yummy, but someone may find it not pleasant smelling. We couldn't finish the lettuces and the eggplant pot, and packed them home. The price was a little bit over my expectation, because the whole fish was kind of expensive. Overall, enjoyed our dinner! read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this place - don't be fooled by the way it looks outside; I almost didn't go in, but I am so glad I did! I ate in a group of 3 and we were seated immediately. The server we had was very friendly and helpful, and the food came very quickly. The portions are big, and they suggest to get a few things and share them among the table. We had the chicken chow mein, general tso's chicken, and the almond chicken - which were all very good. The general tso's chicken had a very balanced sauce, the chow mein had a delightful combination of crispy and soft noodles (and it came with a LOT of noodles, which I absolutely loved). The almond chicken was also delicious, and the pieces were cut small enough to not be unwieldy. The tea was a little bit bland, but it was complimentary, so this didnt bother me too much. All in all, we really enjoyed. The only reason I gave 4 stars rather than 5 is because it didn't have anything to set it apart from other American Chinese restaurants. read more

The food took a little longer to come out, but i didn't mind as we killed the time watching the international news they had playing on the TV. also, the light switch to the women's bathroom is on the outside of the door-you're welcome for the heads up ladies. when they food did come out it didn't disappoint, we ordered duck and mustard greens soup, almond chicken and Mongolian beef. Duck soup 3/5- it was tasty and the duck was delish but, it had a fishy taste to the broth that was off putting to me, I don't know if that's normal since it was the first time i'd had mustard greens or duck in soup form but i probably wouldn't reorder. Our usual place was closed on Xmas Day, so we tried Fortune Garden because it had the shortest line. It was still pretty crazy, though, so I want to give them a partial pass for the service problems we had. We showed up around 7:30 pm and put our names on the list. Most of the tables there seemed to be large groups, so our group of two was seated in about 10-15 minutes. I wish there was a little more room to stand and wait inside -- no matter where you are, you feel like you're in the way, and the space in front of the counter seems reserved for people waiting for takeout orders. Based on Yelper suggestions, we ordered hot and sour soup, peavines with garlic, honey garlic pork ribs, and fried sticky rice. The peavines came out quickly, but that was the only thing we got for a while, so it felt odd to just be eating a veggie side dish. The honey garlic ribs came next, and while I wasn't expecting them to be breaded chunks, it was a generous portion with a flavorful sticky sauce. The hot and sour soup, which you would expect to come out first, came last. Even the small size is a large bowl, more than enough for two people to share and have leftovers. It has pickled veggies and a stronger sour flavor than usual, which I loved! When we finally ate the fried rice at home (see below), it was just like the sticky rice wrapped in a lotus leaf that you get at dim sum, but a full-size entree portion, with lots of sausage, mushrooms, and cilantro -- so watch out if you're a cilantro hater. OK, the service. During the meal, we never got the fried sticky rice or the Sprite we had ordered, and by the time we finished eating and waited a bit, we figured that they had just been forgotten. No one had checked in with us or asked if we were waiting on anything else, and it didn't even seem like we had our own server -- the entire staff was rushing around taking orders and serving. We asked for the check and requested that they remove the items we didn't get from the bill, but just then the fried rice FINALLY appeared, so they wanted to pack it up for us and still charge us full price. It would have been courteous of them to offer some kind of discount, considering the disjointed order that the dishes came out and the fact that they forgot the drink, but nope. It seems like larger tables generally get better service here. Whether that's because they're ordering more or just more visible, I'm not sure, but we watched a large round table next to us get dish after dish while we were eating our sad little peavines. Still, the food was good enough that I would try it again on a less busy night, or better yet, order takeout and avoid the crowded dining area. 3.5 stars overall. read more
