Fortune House is located on Greenville Avenue, which is a major entertainment district in Dallas. This area has a lot of restaurants, bars, boutique stores and music venues. It was difficult to find parking! We persevered and found free parking within walking distance of Fortune House. Lively atmosphere and the soup dumplings are delicious! We had to place additional orders because they were THAT good. The dumplings are the reason I keep coming back. I've honestly only ordered the dumplings here, and every single time they're a hit. It's been three times now! Perfectly cooked, packed with flavor, and the kind of dish you immediately start craving again a few days later. I can't speak much to the rest of the menu because once I find something this good, I stick with it. My only complaint has nothing to do with the restaurant but parking in Greenville can be a challenge. But the dumplings are absolutely worth the effort. I've been craving Din Tai Fung and decided to try out Fortune House. The food was pretty good! We loved the steamed dumplings, soup dumplings, and spicy green beans. The pan friend dumplings were just okay and not what we expected. I would definitely come back if I had dumpling cravings again. The down part of our visit was the service. We had a 4:30 reservation for 2 and called to let them know we may be late. The female we spoke to on the phone was very nice and said they had a 15 min grace period but since they weren't busy, she would hold our table until 5. Luckily, we ended up getting there at 4:38. When we checked in with the host, she said she didn't see any reservation for us. I showed her my confirmation and that I had just called. She spent a few minutes looking on her iPad then said that, unfortunately, they were all booked up and could only see us at the bar or the patio. It was HOT outside and we didn't want to sit at the bar. Not to mention this is early dinner time and most of the tables were not occupied. I told her we didn't want to sit outside or at the bar and wanted to sit at the table we had reserved. She said that since we were late, they had to give our table away and they had "many people coming in at 5 and 5:30" so she couldn't seat us inside. I again explained that I had called and was informed there was a 15 min grace period. She said "Yes there is." ..... we just stared at each other and I finally showed her my phone that said it was 4:42. She spent some more time on her iPad then said she could seat us but we had to leave by 6:30 for the next reservation. I said no problem. She sat us and we didn't see a waiter for about 25 mins. When our waiter finally came he was very nice and we got good service the rest of the time. I did notice that most of the tables stayed empty until right as we were leaving around 6. The host seemed young and maybe didn't know what she was talking about but it was just a really weird interaction when we had a reservation for a near empty restaurant. read more

Came here on a whim after work one day because we were feeling like sweet n sour chicken. We branched out and also tried the dumplings. All of the food was extremely delicious and the service was amazing. This place should definitely be rated higher because I always have a great experience whenever I visit (3 times so far) and the food and drinks are very memorable. The past two times I've visited, I ordered the Chow Mein noodles with chicken add on and I try not to eat them too fast because that's how good they are! In the past I've also ordered the scallion pancake and it was so flavorful and crispy, a well balanced appetizer for sure. Lastly I highly recommend ordering the Lucky Cat Shot, which has jasmine infused golden eagle vodka mixed with pandan rice milk. My displeasure with Fortune House's quality and service is based on repeated experience. I don't typically leave negative reviews, especially as someone who is active on Yelp. I would have let this slide if it happened once. I ordered through Uber Eats, and this is now the second time the fried rice I clearly paid for with both entrees was missing from my order. After the first time, I called to let them know, and the response was dismissive. When it happened again, I called again and got the same lack of concern. At that point, it's not a mistake, it's a pattern. At these prices, basic order accuracy and customer service should be a given. As for the food, it's average at best. It doesn't even reach Panda Express level in terms of consistency or flavor, which makes the pricing even harder to justify. When I walked in, the hostess was still trying to set up, there was a family ahead of me and after she got them seated and came back, she asked me if I had a reservation. Not to be funny but the place is empty and it's just me. I tell her no, that I'm here for lunch and she's talking to other employees while trying to get me taken care of. She starts walking and didn't say anything (follow me, let me show you to your table), so I said "follow you" and she says "yes". I get seated, look at the menu and I realize that I don't have a lunch menu. Adam my server comes over, fills my water glass and tells me he will give me a moment to review the menu, however I ask him for a lunch menu which he goes and grabs for me. I order the General Tso's chicken with white rice, the hot and sour soup, and an egg roll. The soup came out first and it was served with wontons. The soup was more sour than hot. I added some soy sauce to balance out the soup and then really enjoyed it. Adam asked me if I would like another bowl but at this point I was anticipating my meal so I declined (hindsight, I should have gotten another soup!) The meal came and I will say I was a bit disappointed. The chicken didn't have much flavor and the rice was dry. I asked Adam by chance was this left over rice and he reassured me it had just been cooked and stated that it may have not been mixed and I got rice from the top which tends to be drier. I love egg rolls, I did not love or even like their egg roll. It was crunchy on the outside which was great however I didn't know if it was undercooked on the inside or what was inside it but it was not to my liking. I asked Adam about their tea service and he explained in great depth about the service, which I greatly appreciated as I was planning on coming back with a group of ladies who enjoy tea. He also informed me that they offer a simple syrup for the tea vs sugar which is good to know. I tried the green tea and if you like green tea, you'd probably like this. The BEST beef and broccoli I have ever tasted, and my friend agreed. The beef AND the broccoli were so so tender, and the sauce was just perfect. So, we shared the pork xiao long bao (six steamed pork dumplings in broth) were TDF! And, for the holidays the pastry was in red and green! We also shared two lunches ($15 each). Obviously, the B&B and the sesame chicken as well (very tasty). Served with choice of soup (we both went with hot & sour which had such amazing flavors!). The lunches are served with fried rice (really dry) and a veggie spring roll. Fun to watch the dumpling masters make them in a glass room...they are skilled. Also nice to see they have SPACE to move vs the world-famous Din Tai Fung (that has got to be a fire/health hazard - yikes!). We sat at the bar and our server was sub-par at best. Service here was very attentive, thorough, and friendly. - For our starter plates, we had the Pork Xiao Long Bao and the Scallion Pancakes, both were delicious. The Scallion Pancakes were very crispy. - For our main, we had the half order of the Tea Smoked Duck, which was very flavorful and was served with soft buns. The duck had a lot of bones, so some of the pieces were more bone than meat, but overall, it was a good portion of duck. - For dessert, we had the Custard Buns, which were egg custard-filled buns and were so flavorful and not too sweet. This dumpling house is good. I enjoyed the variety plate of dumplings, and because it was my first time, they gave me a plate of creamy crab dumplings. I don't know if they do this all the time, but it makes me feel special. What make this place extraordinary is the service. I apologize, but I forgot to get her name; long dark glorious wavy hair. If making a reservation, be aware that they have a dark, secluded room in the back of the restaurant that isn't very popular, so you might get seated there if unaware (unless that's the vibe you're looking for!). Our entire table got extremely hot and this was before our entrees were brought out. There were flies all over (probably due to the heat) so we had to continuously shoo them away while eating. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken, which was a 10/10; I highly recommend. The side of "fried rice", however, was sub par. It had zero taste and no seasoning. I'd been hearing about Fortune House through their reverse happy hour promos forever, and it finally got me through the door. TBH I've walked past this place on Greenville Ave so many times and never knew what it was -- and I really wish I had gone sooner. The food did not disappoint. We started with the chili wontons and crab rangoons, and both were awesome. The crab rangoons are genuinely the best I've had in Dallas -- and the portions were so generous that me and my friend almost got full just off the appetizers. I got the Honey Beef with buns for my entree and it was so good. My friend got the Honey Walnut Prawns and those were fried to perfection -- crispy, flavorful, no notes. For drinks, we both got the Empress cocktail and then ended up getting espresso martinis later in the night. Both were really good. I will say -- the drinks are strong, so take that for what you will! The ambiance is really nice, they have a cute little patio, and our waitress was super amazing and patient. She was really helpful with picking items off the menu too. I also saw Smoked Duck on the menu and I'm definitely getting that next time. Went here for a little cheeky date night this past Saturday and genuinely had the time of my life. There are two locations one in Irving and one in Dallas. The woman I was going with was a bit hesitant because of an alleged bad experience at the Irving location, but everyone I personally know who has dined here has had nothing but great things to say. I can't speak for other nights of the week, but I HIGHLY recommend making a reservation. When we arrived, there were roughly 17-20 people waiting outside for a table (at least from what I could gather). Reservation times also seem to be a bit flexible; we were about five minutes late and had no issues being seated. I do recommend arriving about 15 minutes early, though parking in Greenville is its own saga. I was terrified we'd miss our reservation, so I gave in and used the valet. Only $20 for the whole night, and absolutely worth the peace of mind. I'm not sure if parking is always like this, but the weather was perfect that evening, so the area was packed with people out and about. Once inside, the atmosphere was warm, cozy, and inviting. The lighting was perfect, not too bright, not too dim. What surprised me (and what I loved) was how thoughtfully spaced out the tables were. It created the feeling of a private dining experience. Honestly, we couldn't even hear the conversation at the next table. I even laughed to myself because the restaurant gave me the same vibe as the one from Freaky Friday. I wish I could remember our server's name because she was phenomenal she was so funny and so attentive. As soon as we sat down, I told her, "I'd like the Fortune Tini, and keep them coming please." And she absolutely did. These cocktails were incredible. They're meant to taste like lychee, but my apparently unsophisticated palate only picked up apple and honestly, I loved them. Now, the food... I was obsessed. I'm a creature of habit when it comes to Chinese cuisine, so I went with the General Tso's Chicken. The portion was generous, arguably enough for two hungry people. It was spicy, sticky, and perfectly balanced. I didn't need to add a single thing to it, and it will absolutely be my go-to order every time I come back to Fortune House. We did order the crab rangoons as an appetizer. They weren't my favorite, not because they were bad, but simply because the flavor wasn't to my liking. I think it might've been the peppers in the cream cheese mixture? Just personal preference. All in all, this place was amazing, and I truly hope I become a regular. The Mai Thai was cloyingly sweet. I make a class Mai Thai at home with orgeat and this tasted like a shot of simple syrup.
