I have eaten at this place a few times I think this is the first time I've written a review now that we live in the neighborhood we decided to have a Family dinner before I head back to NY got there in time for happy hour appetizers(Fried calamari and Pulled pork sliders)and Mexican martinis they were delicious. I really like the way the place is set up with a nice patio area for dining plus a big bar, with great atmosphere and a very good Waiter who was very courteous and attentive.I ordered the Paella,which was very good. we have been frequent diners at FrEdna's. Being so hot, we decided to eat light and to try Frieda's Happy Hour. Arrived at 4:35pm. The bar area was very full And two of the high tops had "Reserved" signs on them. A Hostess came into the bar area, and the most stupid conversation proceeded. I said " I didn't know that you could reserve tables in the bar on line. She: You can't. Me: So If I call you, I can reserve a table in the bar? She: No, you can't reserve tables in the bar. All in all, an excellent option for casual to upscale seafood for those of you on the northwest side of the Austin area. First of all, the decor is subdued, both in terms of lighting and sound. It's romantic, but still lively enough to want to have conversation. And our server tonight, Jack, is a true restaurant professional. Jack was unobtrusive, but always around when needed. In fact, he brought our food quickly and kept the drinks refilled. We had a relaxed pace to our meal, yet we were served quickly. And Jack was also quite the salesperson, knowing exactly how to describe the seafood special this evening. And for me, a non seafood guy, he was beyond accommodating about my request on my bacon cheeseburger -- and didn't make me feel like a schmuck for ordering a burger at a seafood place. Food? First rate. My dining companion enjoyed her special, which was an orange roughy with a pine nut crust and a lemon sauce with shrimp, accompanied by a mushroom risotto and asparagus. She raved about her dinner. My burger was a pleasant surprise. The beef and bacon were clearly high quality as was the bun. In fact, this is one of the better upscale burgers in Austin and the generous portion of shoestring fries went with the burger perfectly. Being a bit hungry, I also ordered a side of sauteed mushrooms which would've been perfectly at home in any prime steakhouse. While we're mentioning prime steakhouses, let's talk about why I didn't order a steak and why I held back that fifth star of excellence. The menu advertised several steaks as Certified Angus Choice. At the price point of the steaks and for the type of restaurant that Freda's strives to be, I'd have expected prime. I have been waiting to go have brunch here for years...literally. The timing was never right. I had family come in from Houston today and the opportunity presented itself. I went to website to check for brunch menu, looked great. I was excited for that brunch buffet knowing it would be somewhat modified for covid precautions. No buffet of any sort. Short brunch menu with decent prices but super small portions and tbh the food really wasn't that great. My guests were not impressed. I just wish the brunch menu online had been updated because I would have gone elsewhere and paid $120 for more than mediocre. I will try again once our lives look more normal again. read more

We had our wedding reception dinner here. I had contact with Lee for all of my arrangements. He was very nice and answered all my questions with patience. He put together a customized menu according to my budget. We also had two guests with severe nut allergies and they were very accommodating. We could not have been happier with our experience!! I wouldn't change anything! The room was decorated for Christmas and linens were nice! Service was excellent. All servers worse masks. All of my guests commented on it and the food! We had 29 people with a menu to choose from. Everyone got fried calamari, spinach artichoke dip, and salad. They got to choose from a New York strip and the shrimp pasta dish. I tried both and they were flavorful and cooked to perfection. I don't know how they managed to get that many steaks out and cooked to order but they did it and did it with grace. We had a private room and were able to play our own music on their sound system (big bonus in my books) and a large screen TV for slideshows. They had our cake table and gift table all set up. I would highly recommend Freda's for a meal or event. What is normally a stressful occasion was done with ease and took a lot off of my shoulders. Will definitely be back. Where to begin.. I really don't like to do this type of reviews but our 1st and only visit to this place was not pleasant we got here for a recommendation of supposedly being one of the best seafood places around and let me tell you the place is overrated food wise, yes ambience is nice but over all nothing to be impressed I got a hair on my drink, the wine glasses are exposed to all the dust and literally next to our table was a planter really filthy full of probably previous customers food crumbs and with some spider webs; normal right? well, not really for being high end restaurant I was expecting more flavor and more quality and a well taken care place not to mention that most of us got sick of our stomach right after, The dessert tasted like a 7eleven cinnamon roll or something like that, I'll leave it at this because could keep on going and remember this is my opinion y'all probably can take courage and go experience it yourself and take conclusions. read more

The food was straight up terrible and plain. Im so upset for paying $162! I got snow crab legs for $96 and wow, a waste of money down the drain. They were so plain, the butter to go with it was so gross. How can you go wrong with butter? The presentation was boring and unappealing. For sides I got Mac and cheese, which was god awful. It tasted like noodles with sliced single cheese on the top. I also got sautéed spinach which was so bitter. No seasoning at all, just OIL. I had got calamari for an appetizer, another disappointment. It was so plain and oily. The only "seasoning" was the flour and oil. The only flavored that added to it was the dressings, which were not so great. I got my son a kids meal cheeseburger, it had blood on when I cut into it. The fries we're plain. Everything was just terrible and not worth paying. Service was friendly and good though. I do not recommend it here. read more

We stopped by Freda's as it was next door to the hotel we were staying at. We sat on the patio which had a nice vibe at night. The drinks were delicious and were normally priced for their size. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms, gumbo, and the bourbon street pasta to share. The food was exceptionally mediocre for the price. This place is a bit of a sleeper. Hidden away on pecan park dr. Ive been twice now and both times were excellent so I thought I would write a review. My favorite seafood type places are papadeaux, eddie v's, uchiko, and maybe trulucks though their consistency isnt great. Papadeaux's tends to overcook their fish a little bit, but their sauces (e.g. opelousas sauce is amazing). I 100% look for not overcooking fish. For example I dont want my salmon raw, but it should still be very slightly undercooked. The window for this is small and most places simply cant do it. I had the red snapper this most recent time, it was by far the best prepared snapper I have ever had. I actually rarely order red snapper because it apparently is very challenging to not over cook. Fredas did it perfectly and it wasnt dry at all. The flavoring on the etouffee wasnt anything special, but the fish was great. Last time I had the chilean seabass which is much more forgiving for overcooking and it was also perfect. The calamari was incredibly tender and the breading wasnt overwhelming. Some of the best calamari Ive ever had. The bourbon street pasta was just ok, I would go to papadeaux for the mardi gras pasta. I would say Freda's excels at properly preparing fish, but their sauces arent quite as good as papadeax. The prices here are high and there is something about the ambiance that is a little low rent even though the decor is perfectly fine. If you live in leander/cedar park, Fredas is a great option so that you dont have to drive into austin proper. read more

We've been here for brunch a couple of times. The food is ok, but not really great for the price ($26, currently) for the buffet. It's a mystery to me why the sausage patties are out of a bag, and not made in house... for a $26 buffet. I'm also perplexed as to why the small pancakes are also out of a bag... for a $26 buffet. That doesn't make a lot of sense. Steiner Ranch Steakhouse has a $20 buffet (minus crab legs), and they literally make everything in house, including the sausage. With the negativity that I mentioned about Fredas, the prime rib is tasty, as are the crab legs, and the service is usually pretty good. They keep your drinks full and they're quick to remove dirty plates and utensils. What's not good is the thick amount of dust bunnies on the beams and wires for the track lighting ... gross. Someone needs to get a vacuum up there. read more

So...our service is definitely what killed the vibe. The food is decent - not amazing, but also definitely solid. We got the gulf oysters, snapper, and scallops. That scallops were particularly well cooked but the items that accompanied them could be skipped entirely. But the service...wow. So bad. I've been wanting to try Freda's for a couple years now. I always forget it's there because it's not on one of the main roads. But that lends to the wonderful outdoor atmosphere. Very little traffic, a relaxed patio setting and gorgeous weather was the perfect mix for dinner with my honey. The wait staff was spot on and kept our water glasses full. The food?...the food was very good! My husband had the Bourbon Street Pasta and I had the special, Orange Roughy (pictured) and we started we calamari. EXCELLENT service by Trevor!!! We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday. For our starter we split the seafood stuffed avocado. I was a little disappointed because for $12 I literally got 2 tiny bites. My husband ordered the special which was the snapper (which he enjoyed) and I had the Freda's house salad and the fried seafood platter. The fried seafood platter is a nice variety of one piece of catfish, two coconut shrimp, two crab stuffed mushrooms, two shrimp diablo and two stuffed crab. It also comes with matchstick fries. I enjoyed the salad and seafood platter but the matchstick fries were EXTREMELY salty. They have a nice drink/wine selection but the star of the meal was the white chocolate bread pudding which is served warm and drizzled in caramel sauce and white chocolate sauce. My husband who never makes a fuss over desserts was in heaven. Our bill came to $149.49 which is pricey but worth it because it was a special occasion. This place was on my list to try and very convenient because we came on a Monday and certain restaurants are closed on Monday's. Definitely a fan! read more

I went there for a lunch business meeting... The restaurant was unusually warm... we had to request a different table and see if they could turn down their heater. My friend got her salmon salad and she said it had a strong fishy smell... she didn't think too much about it and ate it and got food poisoning from it. If you go and order salmon make sure it doesn't smell very fishy! And if the restaurant is reading this... please check your fish BEFORE you serve it!! Great service from out server Jaycee and the food was amazing! Great portion size for each meal and a good atmosphere for a early dinner.

I got a take out order -- a Wedge Shrimp Salad and it was very good. But there were some negatives about the experience. First, it wasn't ready when the app said it would be -- it was at at least 10 minutes late. The place looks very dated (like it hasn't been redecorated since the 80s) and not terribly clean looking. It was fairly expensive for what it was. The salad was $23 and the shrimp had the tails on and were in a separate container (which keeps the veggies from wilting so that's OK). The lettuce etc was all very fresh however and the shrimp was well prepared but it was supposed to be lightly blackened but it really wasn't. It had a dusting of cajun seasoning and was barely orange colored. They provided plastic silverware and they were super cheap and flimsy so it was difficult to cut up the lettuce in the salad. read more

2 stars for this one... I remember once upon a time when Freda's first opened up - the food was fantastic and could easily be compared to that of Truluck's or Flemmings. But that was YEARS ago. Sadly - for me, time has not been good to Freda's. At least in my humble opinion and vast restaurant visiting experience. I have been in a few times over the last 2 years and each time is worse than the last. I doubt I'll actually ever return to be honest. The decor looks rough, the atmosphere is almost grungy (old, dirty and musty)...the service was just OK and the food - well, 2nd to service is obviously the most important thing...and the food was mediocre at best. Crab cakes were pretty lame (could have been frozen ones from a box from how they tasted), my fish was not cooked properly and my friends meal was greasy and sloppy looking. I also always seem to experience a gnat problem which is a little concerning to me. If you're looking for a low-key place to eat over-priced food - then this place is for you. read more

We had the fresh oysters, gumbo, bisque, seabass and my favorite Paella sans Yardbird (more to come) First and foremost everything tasted and appeared well prepared. Even the items which, to me were a bit weak. All had the the necessary ingredients, just needed seasoning adjustments or more time on the fire for flavor maturation. So, the Paella has chicken in it...why, not sure, but chickens do reproduce quickly (which contributes to their tastelessness). I completely missed this on the menu, as I would prefer baked mud pie to the bird...! Nonetheless, the Staff graciously offered to make me bird free Paella, Kudos!
