What can I really say about a cheesesteak place, in a strip center, in Texas? Well, I can say that this place puts out some seriously good sandwiches, that's what I can say. Sure the decor is kitschy, with faded photos of Philly landmarks and sports teams (boo Flyers!), and the paint scheme is loud and tacky, but really, who cares? I've eaten at Fred's several times, and the food has been consistently good, and the service consistently friendly. It isn't always fast, but I'm fine with that because they cook to order. I don't expect it to be lightning-fast. Don't get me wrong, it has never taken an exceedingly long time to get my food; all I'm saying is don't expect your cheesesteak to be sitting at the pickup window as soon as you've ordered and paid for it, that's all. The steak has always been cooked nicely, the cheese melted to creamy perfection, the roll warm with a nice "toothy-ness" to it. The steak has always been moist and flavorful, and has never been the least bit gamey tasting. The menu is rather large, which may be somewhat overwhelming and cause a bit of "analysis paralysis". I've managed to pick a couple items on it that have become my usual choices. Pricing is comparable to other cheesesteak places in the area, but this one is my favorite by far due to the quality and consistency they've displayed on each of my visits. read more

I'm a big cheese steak fan, so when fellow yelper Andrew H. told me about a legit place just a few miles down the road, I immediately bookmarked it to try. I visited during off hours on a Saturday and we pretty much had the place to ourselves, but with the small seating area, it felt just right. The interior decor is just as other reviews have described with tons of Philadelphia posters and signs around, giving it that man-decorated charm. They had quite a few witty adult signs, too, which just added to my new found love. There were only 2 employees working at the time, neither of which was Fred. Nothing special about their service, but this isn't a place you are waited on- they simply took the order and had it out in a reasonable amount of time. The pricing is fair...a little on the higher end at around $7/sandwich, but really what you expect for a good philly. I had the #4 as so many had recommended with a side of those crispy fries and a Hank's root beer to wash it all down. The bread was to die for delicious. Not too greasy or soggy with the perfect texture and flavor to compliment the flavorful meat, sauteed onions, and melty provolone cheese. I'm a bit of an abomination and love to add ranch dressing to philly cheese steaks, and theirs definitely passed the test. Came in after work one day looking to find some of that 4* mmm-action others yelped about in reviews of other locations. I tried the bacon philly with fries and a Tahitian Treat. They were out of tastykakes. Boo. Got my order pretty quickly, which is nice. I munched on fries on the way home. They were pretty darn good while hot... not so much once they hit room temp (but that could be said about all fries, I guess). Got home, stripped out of my uncomfortables and took a seat. I braced myself, took a bite, sighed. The sandwich was lacking the thing I love third from the most in the world- cheese. I opened up the little sucker to see if they'd forgotten it and, to my surprise, they hadn't. It was hiding in a nook of that amoroso roll. Didn't know because I couldn't taste it. First, this place is not where you go for aesthetics. Old Philadelphia photos and questionable paint decor abound. But do they make a really great cheesteak? Yes. Is it the best I have found in DFW for cheesesteaks? yes. Do I go here when I am in desperate need of food from home and there is no time to cook at home? A few times yes. I get the "Broad Street". I was excited that Fred's open up a place in Carrollton. I usually head over to the Plano location. Like their Plano location, their Philly Cheesesteak is to die for. It's as authentic as it gets. You don't get all the extra toppings that comes with the different versions that are out there. They do have that option listed on the menu but I normally get the plain, jane version. For a Philly Cheesesteak, there are a lot of flavors to Fred's version. The bread is nice and soft, not too soft. It has the right amount of hardness and chewiness. It's loaded with steak, saute onions and cheese. The perfect amount and right combination. I've spoken to the owner in the past and he a really nice, down to earth guy. Love to make food. He once told me that he was going to try the Joe's Pizza and Sub down the street. I've tried both and I would take Fred's Philly Cheesesteak over anyone else's. read more

Summer time at Fred's is like walking into a broiler. The dining room is hot, hot, hot! And its not just because of the grill spilling heat from the kitchen. Ventilation is poor, and cooling is provided by a couple of ceiling fans in the dining room. I'm not even sure if there was ever central air in this building, but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't. Also the dining area is sparse, functional; but lately it seems this location tends to use the back dining space as storage, making for a less desirable eating area. So if you're craving Fred's, call in your order and take it to go. Rules for eating a Fred's philly cheesesteak: 1) Don't be a moron and ask for a fork. It's a sandwich--learn to eat with your hands! 2) Yes, eating a cheesesteak is messy business...don't wear your Sunday best and don't wear white. 3) The only dressing allowed on a philly cheesesteak is Cheez Whiz. Welcome to a world filled of hoagies, and a wide vareity of cheesesteaks. Fred's Downtown Philly is delicious, and in my opinion, the closest we can get to authentic cheesesteaks in Dallas. It's a small mom and pop shop that is extremely popular, so expect to wait to order, get your food, and possibly obtain a table. They have daily specials that come with fries and a drink. This place does not disappoint. I have tired the original, chicken, steak and chicken, steak and mushroom, and pizza varities. You can either get it as a 6 in or a 10 in. For me a 6 in is plenty. Depending on what your order, it may be a tad bit pricey, but it is well worht it. read more

This is one of the best lunch spots in Carrollton and there's usually a wait so get there early if you're in a rush for your food. Everything is prepared to order and as they advertise - NO MICROWAVES. The food isn't fancy, but it's darn tasty and always hot and fresh. I've tried many of the phillies and they're all great. The fries aren't anything to write home about, but they hold up their end of the deal pretty well. There's a rotating lunch special Monday through Saturday that nets you a sandwich (6 or 10 inches), fries, and a drink for less than ten dollars. The six inch is filling enough, but the 10 will give you a snack later for back at the office. One odd observation, there's always some strange movie playing on the back TV. My Philly cheesesteak experience is quite limited. I honestly think the last steak sandwich I had was when I was living in the dorms at UT Austin and they made them in their grill cafeteria downstairs (good ol Jester!). So when the boyfriend suggests we go to Fred's for lunch, I'm skeptical. I don't remember the cafeteria Phillies being all that great. We walk in and it's a tiny little place. Some seating up front, a little more in the back. Decently sized menu, especially since it's just sandwiches. Two sizes of Phillies available. I decided on getting a Philly without cheese.. I got the mushroom one: steak, onions, and mushrooms. Can't go wrong! I got the smaller sized sandwich, while the boyfriend got the larger BBQ Philly. Girl at the register was nice, but a little difficult to hear. She rang us up for our sandwiches, two sodas, and an order of fries. We go sit in the back and wait for our number to be called. Adorning the walls is lots of Philadelphia memorabilia which is pretty neat to look at. Behind us was a tv playing a strange movie (I think it was that new one: The Immortals). Blood and guts and sandwiches. hahaha. Anyway, our food was ready in a decent amount of time. Sandwiches were pretty large and I feel as though we definitely got our money's worth. I wish there had been a few more mushrooms on mine, but overall it was delicious! The roll was soft and a little greasy. The steak was cooked perfectly and not chewy. Boyfriend's BBQ sandwich was of course covered in barbecue sauce and he ate every bite! He put "Fred's sauce" on his as he ate it. They also had a Hotter version of the sauce, but he stuck to the original. I didn't add any sauce to mine, but I'm not a sauce girl: I eat almost all of my sandwiches dry. The fries were pretty good. Thin cut, quite crispy. When we were eating, Fred himself came in with a bunch of supplies for the kitchen. When he was done unloading, my boyfriend struck up a conversation about the insanely huge 2 foot Philly that you can order. A guy he works with tried to do the challenge and I honestly couldn't picture a damn sandwich that big! Fred was super nice and we talked about the sandwich and other stuff for a little while, then we let him get back to what he was doing. Super nice guy, super tasty sandwiches! I'm a bit picky when it comes to phillies. Now I don't know what makes a good one and what doesn't. But I know what I like and what I don't like. I got the #8 and it comes with mushrooms. Dustin D. got the Po' Fred and it comes with Italian Sausage and we were both happy. I wish the whiz didn't cost $1.50, I probably wouldn't get it again for that reason alone regardless of how amazing it made my sandwich. Toothpicks were good. (Fried onion and jalapeno straws.) Fries were okay, might add the cajun seasoning next time. Make sure you grab some hot sauce, I hear they make it in house and it is awesome. Oh and the bread is perfect. This was one of those sandwiches that made me want to gorge myself! I was out this way and hadn't eaten all day so of course I break out Yelp and find this gem! I walked into the empty restaurant, which usually worries me, but OMG the smell that hit me was heavenly! I felt like the cartoons that rise up and float toward the delicious smell of food as the scent taunts. A nice gentleman appeared behind the counter and helped me decide what I was going to get. I almost got the #2 and then he suggested banana peppers, so I went with the #6 with sautéed banana peppers. I had never had them like that and it was ridiculous good! I tried the house hot sauce. Truly legit cheesesteak!! Tried this on a suggestion from a friend- they've been in my area over a year now so it has to be decent right? Talk about the nicest service and helpful at the front counter- the guy said if you live this close you'll probably be back at least once a week. And he's right- I'm already planning our next dinner here. Meat and bread sliced and baked in Philly, not sure what the turnaround time is, but it tasted fresh and the bread was out of bounds. Got the regular cheesesteak 6 inch and hubby as well as my dad got the cheesesteak 10 inch. Only a few complaints: 1. Took a really long time to make three sandwiches and a kids nugget with fries. Like 20 mins. 2. The meat on my 6 inch was way less than the amount of meat on my husband and dads. When compared, it wasn't like my sandwich was just shorter- it was like it was 1/4 if the meat they had. 3. The fries were basically frozen and over fried. Like snap in half not even worth stealing one from the kiddo bad. Maybe it was just a bad day or bad oil. We will give it another try. Overall I want to go back and try about 15 of the 20+ other sandwiches on the menu-- cannot wait to go back and try the mushroom, then maybe the pizza, def the ones with peppers..... Yum! This place is a hidden gem-the sandwiches are AWESOME, and priced very reasonably. They have a lunch special for the #2 w/ fries and a drink for $8. Okay, so Philadelphia may be the same city that cheered when Michael Irvin suffered a career-ending injury (not to mention they're the same people that once booed Santa), but darn it if they don't make some awesome cheesesteak sandwiches. They have a variety on hand. 6" subs will run about $5-6, while 10" are about $8-10. I got the cheesesteak hoagie, which includes lettuce and tomatoes, along with your usual steak, onions, and cheese. My friend got a regular cheesesteak. They have ketchup, mustard, their house sauce, and a hot version of their house sauce on hand. The house sauce really does compliment the meal. My only gripe would be they give you a skimpy amount of fries for what you're paying for. The atmosphere is no different than a hole-in-the-wall pizza place, with pictures of Philly-related athletes and celebs on the walls, plus a few 76er and Eagles banners. It isn't air conditioned but they had a couple of fans going, so I suggest sitting in the back if it's a hot summer day. They have Rocky playing on the TV adds to the atmosphere (I guess playing the Tom Hanks-dying-of-AIDS movie "Philadelphia" wouldn't have been conducive to good eating). All in all, a good experience and I'd recommend it to anyone. read more

First off, there is a huge sign stating you will be charged $3 if you are on the phone while ordering. Yet the cashier was on the phone during the order before me and during my order. Does that mean I get a $3 discount? Not the best costumer service... The place isn't as clean either. I love a good philly cheesesteak, and after my favorite place closed Fred's got bumped up from #2 to #1. I usually frequent the Plano location, but I was closer to the Carrollton location and was pleased with my visit. Hot, greasy, yummy... what more could ask for? One thing I wasn't happy about was I asked for them to add bell peppers, and instead of banana peppers AND bell peppers I got only bell peppers and still got charged. I'm glad Fred opened a location on this side of town. The sandwiches are great. Not over powered by salt, just good ole taste of beef, cheese, bread and grease. I've been going o Fred's for years now. I started at the old Inwood location and have made my way to Plano, Richardson, Allen, Carrollton, Grapevine, and soon will get to the Irving location. The food is always excellent and the service is pretty good. They seem to always show a movie and that 's usually a pretty good one along with catering to the kids and changing to a cartoon movie when they come in... My kids love that. The Broadstreet cheesesteak is one of my favorites... I love the mushroom and pepper combination and i get mine without cheese because I can't have it and it is still flavorful. There have been only a few occasions that they are closed or have opened late when and that's on Sundays or when there was a gas leak or power outage or something out of their control, but other than that, they are always open and open on some holidays too. One day, maybe during football season, I hope he will open up for games on Sundays. read more

Since the Texadelphia in Addison closed, my SO has been searching for a Philly cheese steak place. This hit the spot. The 6" is good for a meal, the 10" is good for two people to share or two separate meals. He had the pepper cheese steak and I had the mushroom. Both were mostly meat and good portions. The place has a hole in the wall feel, with few frills. They have a couple sauces available, but honestly, the meat was flavorful without any modifications. We'll be coming back! read more

Soggy bread with contents spilling all over the place. Not horrible but annoying. Ask for a fork and they'll point you to a sign that says, "no #%@#% forks, use your hands". I kid you not - really. Try it. He eventually conceded and gave me a fork. I saw the mushrooms in the back, floating in a big can of water - gross. She scraped what little of mushrooms were left at the bottom of the pit of water for our sandwiches. Nothing tasted fresh unfortunately. Fries were decent. Fred was friendly, the woman at the counter not so much. She might as well have been working at the DMV. Not much seating and it's hotter in the front than in the back.
