First impressions count a lot, and I was tempted to leave after the rudeness we were "greeted" with. The female behind the counter should not be in a customer service role. After ordering, we sat down and waited, hoping it would be as good as we saw on tv last week. When the sandwiches were finished, we were again let down. Stingy with the meat would be an understatement. But, we ordered it, so we figured we would eat it. One bite in and my wife said; "I'm done". I looked over and watched her pull a rather long hair out of her sandwich. I said something to the guy in the back about it, and he just looked at me and lifted his hat while saying; "I don't have any hair, and neither does he", he then went back to texting. Well, the female behind the register does in fact have hair, and she was in and out of the kitchen quite a bit with no hat or hair net on. She too acted like it was no big deal. We tossed our meals and wrote this one off to experience. We won't be back, and the health department will be notified of the kitchen issues. read more

Prices are completely reasonable for the food you get. Quality - 9/10 - Ordered #2 (regular philly) with side of fries. The philly was spot on with a pleasant beefy flavor and cheesiness guaranteeing I'll be back whenever I'm in the mood for a good philly. I highly recommend Fred's for ANY Cheesesteak! You just can't go wrong. Cheap and great portions. It's especially better the next day if you only eat half a large. Make sure to put it in an air-fryer for that nice crisp bite! I always add Cheese wiz to my orders because that's how it's done in Phil! Cajun fries are great. Customer service is awesome. Absolutely no customer service! They close at 8 p and my husband arrived at 7:30 and was treaty like an interruption of their closing. Waited 35 minutes for a veggie steak so the owner could serve the "Travel Channel" set up in half the restaurant. No room for any actual customers to sit and enjoy themselves. I heard good things about this place so I wanted to give it a try. Unfortunately, I drove all the way there and they were closed on a Saturday at 5pm even though the door signed clearly showed hours as Monday-Thursday 11am-8pm. Maybe there was an emergency or an extra slow day causing them to close early. Can't say I wasn't disappointed. I'm accustomed to Chicago style Italian beef, but if this is how a Philly cheesesteak tastes, I would take Philly over an Italian beef any day of the week. These are all franchise locations as far as I'm aware, but I've seen Fred at a few of them. The recipe is his and he is a Philly local - IE, it's great. Can't go wrong with any of the food here, but we stick to cheese steaks with either crab fries or onion straws with a ton of house sauce. If you're adventurous, try the spicy house sauce! read more

First time here and I'll say first impressions are important! Both employees were hanging out at a table it was covered with snacks, trash, and jackets. It look like they were living there. Very junky!!! I have to agree with the other reviews that the female at the front counter was very rude. She wasn't that bad to me but I could hear her interacting with other customers. I put out a call here on Yelp for a good cheesesteak and Fred's was the overwhelming response. That was an hour ago....now here's the review. First impressions on walking in was that this place looked like a neighborhood Pittsburgh dive (Never been to Philly...sorry). Tight, vinyl seats and total Philly team affiliation. Since I had the kiddos with me, and the boy child is not down with the cheesesteak, something had to be found for him. He picked a turkey hogie, only to be told that they didn't have hogies and they didn't have burgers. This only left a chicken cheesesteak. So I ordered that for him and a cheesesteak with onions and peppers for me as well as some chips....only to be told that they were out of chips. OK...so basically half of the menu was out of stock or just not available. The wait was pretty short, so we grabbed the bag and headed home. I could smell them the entire way there. Once we got home, we opened them right away, and my only thought upon gazing at the innerds of my sandwich was "For a cheesesteak, they certainly forgot the cheese." All that was there was chopped steak, onions and peppers on a roll. Then I looked at my son's sandwich. Also no cheese to be found. Dry as bone on both counts. I was home, so I added some cheese out of the fridge and dug in. Once the extra cheese was there, this was a damn good sandwich. The boy also gave high marks to his. So, for now, I can only give Fred's 3 stars because half of the menu wasn't available, and because I want to try it again and order extra cheese next time. Hope springs eternal. read more

I've only been to Philadelphia once, so I certainly don't claim to be a cheesesteak connoisseur of any kind, but the Mushroom Cheesesteak I had at Fred's was about a mile better than any of the ones that I had during my week stay in Philly. It's definitely a hole in the wall place with crummy floors and kind of dingy table cloth; and the hated Philadelphia Eagle gear on the wall notwithstanding, Fred's Downtown Philly is the real deal. First off, the sizes they state are inaccurate -- but in a good way. Their 6" sandwich is actually more like an 8", and their 10" is actually more like a 12", so yea boyyyyyy. But wait, it gets better. They also put a TON of cheesesteak in between those buns. I went to three or four places while I was in Philly, and I don't know what kind of crap they're trying to pull up there, but the sandwiches are basically just bread with a little bit of onion. Lemme tell you this, Fred don't skimp on the meat. What makes the already longer-than-stated sandwich overflowing with meat, cheese, and mushrooms even better is that the sandwich tastes freaking amazing. Just when you thought it couldn't get any better. read more

I had a late lunch here today. My friend and I had planned to check out Sushi of Plano for a late lunch ($1 happy hour), but they have changed their hours of operation and were not open. We changed gears and went to Fred's a few shops down in the same strip mall. I've never had a cheesesteak, so I didn't know what to expect. We both got the 6 inch cheesesteak with mushrooms and onions. I had jalapenos added to mine, and added an order of hockey pucks (fried jalapeno slices). As soon as I took a bite of my sandwich I wish I'd ordered the 10 inch size. It was OUTSTANDING! The owner told me he'd add cayenne next time to spice it up a notch. Yeah! The hockey pucks were little bites of spicy goodness. I will get these again! The owner was really terrific about offering suggestions. He also noticed my accent and we had a nice chat about Louisiana universities. I will be back, and soon. I can't wait for Sugar Bear to try this place! He will love it! The only reason I'm knocking this down a star is because of the restaurant's appearance and level of cleanliness. It is a very casual place, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, the splashes of sauce on the wall that needed a good wiping down were kind of gross. I also wish they had bigger cups and non-styrofoam cups, as well as a better selection of fountain drinks...this girl is NOT a Pepsi fan at all. read more

The reason this review is only getting three stars is because of the time it took for my #8 Mushroom Cheesesteak to hit the table. Jenn and Vicki and I decided to eat here for lunch yesterday. Since Jenn's commute to this lunch location was a good 10+ minutes further, she called and placed her order over the phone, thinking that way, hers would be ready about the same time ours was. I arrived, scouted out a table, because the place didn't really have enough seats for the business they do. Vicki arrived and held the table while I ordered, and then vice versa. Jenn arrived and paid for her meal. Then we sat, and waited. Then they called #19, Jenn's. She went ahead and ate, because of course we wanted it to be hot. She finished her entire meal. We waited. We waited. I was #28, Vicki was #30. It was over 30 minutes (from the time on our receipts) to the time our numbers were called before Vicki and I were able to eat. It was at least 10 minutes after Jenn had finished eating. Granted, my mushroom cheesesteak was good (although lacking in the cheese department), but I was starving by the time I got to eat. Next time we eat here, we are all calling in our orders, even when I only work 3 miles from here. read more

I know this is just a quick service establishment but it doesn't mean you should be unfriendly to customers. As for the food, it wasn't that bad but I have to say I've had better.
