Friedman's at the Edison has such a gorgeous interior. The service was also very good. I think that there was a kitchen timing error because one person in my group had ordered a beyond burger, and the burger and the fries were stone cold when it came out to the table. However, the rest of the food was warm and amazing! When we alerted the server about the cold food, they were nothing but nice about it and remade the burger and reheated the fries immediately. Also, the spinach and artichoke dip was superb, although they don't give enough chips to dip with it. We ordered more bread to finish the rest of the dip. Amazing gluten free chicken and waffle! Even my non-gluten free husband loved it. He also liked the pastrami and hash and single pancake on the side. My niece devoured her french toast. Big plus is that almost everything on the menu can be made gluten free. Don't be intimidated by the wait time. We were told the wait on a Sunday morning at 11 am would be 45 minutes but we were seated in less than 10 minutes. We also really liked our server Seyda. The name makes me think of kitchen appliances since I'm from the Bay Area, and Friedman's is the name of a home improvement chain around these parts. This Friedmans doesn't have a thing to do with DIY projects, but it has everything to do with the Art Deco hotel next door, the Edison, as it carries over the lobby's pre-mid-century period decor. I came upon it as I was looking for a place to have lunch close to the office at Sixth Avenue and 45th. It was damn cold, so it better be close, and even though it meant hazardously crossing the mob mentality at Times Square, it was close. Luckily, few of the mobs made it to Friedmans at the lunch hour as it was covered in construction scaffolding on the outside. Inside it looked classically appointed like a Fred-and-Ginger movie musical set, though they would have effortlessly danced the Continental on their way out once they took a look at the Times Square prices. Even as I focused my eyeballs on the menu's salad section, I grimaced a bit at the $20 price tag on the Sesame Salmon Salad. I bit though and received quite a hearty plateful of ingredients - kale, barley, pickled and shredded beets and carrots, avocado, edamame, and sprouts. Of course the topper consisted of the chunks of salmon which appeared to be marinated in an unnecessary soy sauce (photo: http://bit.ly/2EweeUW). Now here was a case of too much of a semi-good thing. Again, why? The sherry added an odd sweetness to the cauliflower that did nothing to enhance the flavor. I made reservations since there were 6 of us -- friends in town with their two teenage kids. I chose this place for the central location -- visitors were heading to the theater afterwards -- and for the menu -- diners are sort of perfect when you have to feed folks whose likes and dislikes you don't know. We were seated right away, and the server took our orders very quickly -- a hint, perhaps that they were going to rush us in and out. Sure enough, our food came out in less than 5 minutes, so there's definitely an assembly line in the kitchen. The service was okay -- we were able to get ketchup brought out and refills on coffee. But they were really eager to push us out and turn the table over. And I get it. It's Times Square. But still. Not ideal if you're wanting to catch up with folks. The food was okay. Nothing special. I had the pancakes, which were fine -- fluffy enough. They weren't buttered at all and while there was the blueberry compote on top, that really just moistened the top cake. Not the best pancakes I've had -- not remotely. And considering how spendy they were, the stack was pretty small. But whatever. It's a meal in Times Square. No one expects to be wow'd here. I have been wanting to try brunch at this place inside the Edison Hotel for quite some time and finally got the chance to with a friend. The restaurant does not accept reservations so I arrived a little earlier and put my name down. It was quite bustling inside with a high energy feel. The wait was only 10 minutes but my friend had not arrived by the time the table was ready. They only seat full parties so I was a little worried about having to wait longer after my friend arrived, but we were seated immediately. This time, ordering was easy because I was craving Steak and Eggs. Instead of getting it with the crispy yucca, I asked if they could substitute that with potato hash and they did that without a problem. I really enjoyed my meal. The steak was perfectly medium well, slightly charred and incredibly juicy with tons of great flavor. It was delicious all on its own. I didn't have to add any sauces, etc. The potato hash was also very tasty. It was extremely crispy and the rest was nice and fluffy. It was seasoned well. The egg was just okay but kind of bland. Prices are comparable with other restaurants in the area. The entrees were between $16-29. My Steak and Eggs were $21, which I thought was pretty reasonable. The service was good. The host and waiter were on top of it and made sure we were taken care of. Our waiter was pleasant and friendly. I was in NYC for work and happened into Friedmans! What a find. Can you imagine a place where you can order what ever you want and not get sick? Most people would say "yes" as if it's no big deal, but I have to be very careful. We were there for breakfast: my colleague and I (who is also allergic to gluten) ordered tea. She had the yogurt, fruit, and granola. I had the scrambled eggs with lox, tomato and GF bagel. They don't have dairy-free cream cheese, but they should add that option. The first two days that we had breakfast here the service and food were both great. Juan was the bartender who attended to us and he was nothing short of amazing. The food has been decent all three days. Hints why we decided to have breakfast here on our 3rd day before we head back to Houston. Today, 10/31, the bartenders Chris and Jay really feel short of what we expected. They acted as if they didn't want to serve us. Barely checked on us, but seemed happy and attentive to others. On Wednesday, 122023, my Kidbro Scotty flew into NYC from Florida to catch a late breakfast and a Matinee on Bway. I made reservations for two at 1130hrs. for a late breakfast. We arrived at Friedman's at 1130hrs. And was seated in 2 minutes. We both had the Shakshuka, one of Friedman's signature breakfast dishes. Very favorable; envision a salsa-infused omelet. My meal included OJ, Green Tea, and Cheesecake topped with strawberries. My brother's meal had a fruit bowl and French fries with seltzer water as a beverage. Now, we did a lot of eating and talking and raised the noise level a bit because that's what brothers do. It was almost 1 pm by the time we left for the show. But the service was phenomenal. Our server, Lorena, was excellent, and we made all our menu choices based on her recommendations. The Friedman was in full swing, telling me this place is popular. So I suggest always making reservations. Avocado on the egg white omelette came quite browned but it's a result of the lengthened time between preparation and consumption so not necessarily restaurant's fault. Value wise it's not overly expensive for NY at $15-20 a dish but thought the side of fries for $8 was a bit high. Would recommend for brunch food overall. read more

Love coming to this brunch place in the Theater District. It's a bit hidden now with all the construction going on. They have dinner options but they're mostly known for brunch. Service is EXCEPTIONAL. Super kind and friendly and one of the best I've had! Their chicken and waffles are apparently amazing but unfortunately I've never gone in with the appetite to try it. Egg white omelette: It's with farm fresh vegetables but they are super accommodating if you want something else. The fries can also be replaced with sweet potato fries (delicious) or hash. Hash: Potatoes, meat with 2 sunnyside eggs on top. Very well seasoned. Blueberry pancakes: Very dense and fluffy. Moist and not dry at all. All of their food looks and tastes delicious so you can't really go wrong. Average NYC prices but the portions are definitely enough to fill you. This review is for breakfast/brunch/lunch but I suspect you'd find the same for dinner. The food near Times Square is usually dicey (at best) but Friedmans is an oasis in a food desert with lots of surprises. Surprise #1: It wasn't that busy at 11am on Thursday. We were shown to a very small table for two but they relocated us to a larger table when we asked. Surprise #2: Virtually everything on the menu is available gluten free. In fact, the server told us there were only four things on the menu that couldn't be made gluten free (one of them is matzo ball soup). Which leads us to ... Surprise #3: All of the servers are really friendly (Are you sure I'm in NYC?). The manager on duty even delivered some of our food when things got a little busier. On to the food: Blueberry pancakes: The gf pancakes were good but not great. There aren't blueberries IN the pancakes but rather a blueberry compote on top of the pancakes. The syrup seemed authentically Vermont maple. Pastrami hash with sunny-side eggs: Yum. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a large portion with lots of tasty pastrami. I tried but I couldn't finish it all. We also ordered a side of scrambled eggs which were delicious. The server later told us that they are scrambled with heavy whipping cream. Definitely something I should try at home. Both the iced latte and the iced chai latte were tasty. (It's Colombe coffee, for those of you who care about that stuff.) There aren't a lot of reasonable food choices near Time Square but Friedmans should be high on your list. read more
