I like this Friedmans location better than the UWS one since it's in a quieter area, but it does seem a bit smaller and more cramped. If you haven't been to a Friedmans before, it's somewhat overpriced breakfast/brunch food. Service was friendly and attentive, and the food came out relatively quickly. The lemon pancakes were somewhat of a miss; they tasted dry and while the citrus peels provided a tangy twist, the raspberries were underripe and bitter. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of pure/raw maple syrup and they didn't give much either. We also had the chicken and waffles, and while not bad, it was $29; coming from Dallas, I've had better for cheaper. Would pass on both next time. However, I'd recommend the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich. It's very affordable (well, comparatively) and comes with a side of fries. The chicken is both crispy and creamy, likely due to the buttermilk, and almost sweet. The skin was slightly tough, but otherwise I'd order it again. read more

Me and my husband were in the area and decided to get some lunch. I've never been here before but it looked really cozy and lively inside so we decided to give it a chance. I'm so happy we came here because I was craving a really good salad and usually I avoid diners for salads but no more! The service was excellent although the restuarant was absolutely packed. Our waiter actually recommended this salad and I'm very glad he did. The salad here was one of the best I've had in a really long time and it was actually a really healthfully prepared meal. If you are GF, this place deserves more stars than I can give. My cousin is gluten-free, and she had the chicken fingers. They not only checked but also reassured her that they were safe for her. She said, "These are the best GF chicken tenders I have ever had". We came here for a quick brunch before our event at the Javis center. We were a table of 8 but the restaurant was able to accommodate us. From the menu I noticed a variety of brunch/lunch options. The wings alone would be a 5/5 stars since they were crispy, seasoned well and delicious! The dumplings were also very good. For my meal I got the famous French dip sandwich. It was just okay. Lots of meat, bread was just plain roll but there was no real flavor. The au jus I expected to be packed with flavor but it was also bland. The fries were also supposed to be herb fries but felt there were lacking in the herbs (maybe some parsley spilled on). I heard the gluten free people rave about the lemon ricotta pancakes! I live very close to this location, so I've gotten a number of dishes from here, most of which I've enjoyed for breakfast. The pastrami hash and the salmon Benedict have been some of my staples. I used to also enjoy the shashuka... but I have NO idea what happened recently. It was so salty that it was basically inedible. They sent it to me again, and same thing. Kudos to their customer service for trying to remedy the situation, but it was ultimately not remedied because there's something wrong with the preparation. I visited with his place when I was meeting my friend Alex during our lunch break. Although it looks small and cute from outside there is plenty of room inside. In the beginning I thought it was just a coffee place but when I saw the tables in the back I got more excited. Our lunch lasted for about 30 minutes. This time was enough to try the Pastrami Reuben. As a person who has celiac disease, I am so grateful for the opportunity to have a "normal meal" at Friedman's. I live several hours away, but every time I am in New York I have a meal here. My favorite: buttermilk fried chicken sandwich. The fried chicken is everything I have missed: crispy coating, juicy chicken, just the right amount of salty seasoning. I like the bread and butter pickles, but next time I'll try to remember to ask for dill, if they have them, crispy lettuce and flavorful tomato... you get the picture. I had the pleasure of having the breakfast chorizo. I love beans and avocado as extra protein and it served its purpose. I was satisfied and even the portion looked tiny, it was more than enough.
