My fiancé ran across this store only a few weeks after they opened. We were planning our wedding and shopping for something cake-ish that would not be dry and be consistent with the tasting. This was the problem my sister and many other friends have had. You go to the tasting it is great, you get the cake and it is not at all like the tasting because they have to make a larger cake. We happened on the store while the owner was there, Sarah. She is a very nice lady and took the time to personally help and provide us with all the information we need. We loved their chocolate, carrot cake and lemon cupcakes! They are very moist and the frosting is not too sweet. Before making our decision we went to many different cupcake and doughnut places to find one that was amazing. We could not have been more pleased with the quality of the cupcakes at our wedding. We heard compliments from many of our guests that they were very moist and the frosting was perfect. Not too sweet and very creamy! You can really tell that they use very fresh ingredients. After a very disappointing matcha cake run at Rose and Basil, my friend and I ventured to Cupcake Market in hopes that we can cleanse our taste buds with some matcha lava cake. Turns out, they do not sell the matcha lava cake anymore. We decided to get the chocolate cupcake with matcha frosting and we were very pleased. The cake was very moist and decadent. The frosting has a great matcha kick that isn't too overpowering. The cupcake was also very visually pleasing. Cupcake Market is known for their delicious cupcakes and killer cookies - but they also make one of the most delicious wedding cakes we have ever tasted. Seriously. It's like taking a cupcake and making turning that into three tiers of delicious goodness. Our guests were floored with the look and taste and I saw numerous people sneaking back for seconds... of wedding cake. I love cupcake market! I had a friend in town for a week and we went twice. The people working there are so friendly and patient. They were are so many options and they were so great about letting my friend and I take all the time in the world deciding. I have only had their cupcakes, but I've had almost every flavor option they offer and they are all AMAZING! The face cookies look so cute, but they are a little pricey. It might be worth it if they are really good, but I'm sure they are based on the cupcakes. The store is really small, like only four people at a time small, so it's a place that you only get to go, but the cupcakes are just so good that it doesn't even matter. They don't have 50 million obscure flavors like other cupcake shops. This place is like a classic ice cream parlor from the 50's: they have their key flavors that they do well and they don't need to try anything fancy. I cannot recommend this place enough! I ordered 10 of the face cookies for a friend's birthday party. When I went to pick them up they were beautifully packaged and already waiting. When I told them I would be taking them on a plane they very nicely spent 10 minutes re-packaging them in bubble wrap to ensure that they wouldn't break (they didn't!) and they were generally very polite and helpful. The cookies themselves were very impressive. They looked a LOT like my friend. I didn't expect much in the way of taste (taste, in my opinion, takes a backseat to appearance in this case) but they were DELICIOUS!! They were a huge hit and everyone at the party loved them. I know there's a bigger story behind this business, but last night I briefly spoke with Sarah, a native downtown NY'er, to learn that she and her parents own the bakery and all work there together (along with some of her friends). They are the warmest, most welcoming people. When you walk into this shop you are immediately asked to taste some frosting they just whipped up. Sarah, who doesn't look older than 25, is the baker and has developed all the recipes on her own. Her banana bread, which is one of the most divine confections I've ever sampled, apparently took her four years to perfect. And I can see why. It's an impossible combination of not-too-sweet, light and dense, and packed with fruit, similar to her moist and buttery carrot cake. Same with her coconut bread. Her cupcakes - along with classic vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet - are made with the same carrot cake, banana bread, and coconut bread, and are topped with different flavours of Italian buttercream frosting - the kind that is whipped up with meringue, making it much lighter and less sweet than traditional buttercream. Flavours include strawberry, made with fresh strawberries; peanut butter; vanilla; chocolate; cream cheese; coconut; and nutella. It looks like she's experimenting with new flavours all the time depending on what fruits are in season. I heard she also sometimes makes pistachio. So for those of you, like me, who are not fans of typically dry and overly sweet cupcakes - these are not those! These are square-shaped, fabulous little moist cakes with meringue tops. I had a bite of my daughter's pretzel cookie which isn't really my thing, but for anyone who likes the sweet/salty combo, there's nothing not to love. There are also gorgeous fruit pies and last night I was eyeing the banana pudding, which I was told has layers of banana bread, dulce de leche, and vanilla wafers. That might send me into cardiac arrest so I politely declined. Sarah also specializes in these celebrity cookies which you can see laid out on baking trays in the window. They are expertly hand-designed to resemble Elvis, a crying Kim Kardashian, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and of course a yellow-haired Donald Trump. My kids bought a few of these as gifts to take back to Virginia with them when they were visiting us. As a native New Yorker, and 20-year resident of the East Village, I'm happy to support family owned businesses such as these. With so much gentrification in our neighborhood, it's nice to at least see a local woman and her family move in, rather than some generic, overly-priced restaurant or bar. read more
