My experience with checking out was a breeze and very friendly. However, I had arranged to pick up a My Grandma's Cinnamon Cake on a specific day, but I called and changed the pick up to the next day. When I went to the service counter, the manager groused that I had reserved it for the day before. I tried to explain that I had called and changed the pick up, but he just walked away. This is a high end grocery store and deli located on the PCH near the Ritz Carlton. Although it is a bit pricey, you can find things here that you can't get at your bigger chain stores. The deli is wonderful with a nice selection of cold cuts, cheeses, and salads. I love the poke here as well. And if you are in the mood for sushi, get it fresh here! The meat department is wonderful with fresh beef, pork, and lamb. The fish department has a nice selection of fresh wild fish and shellfish. It does cost more here, so I can't buy it every day... and it's a special treat when I do. The wine department has a nice selection . I like the gift/floral department, the flowers are so fresh! The store is very clean and the staff are always friendly and happy to help or answer your questions. Every so often they have a deal (going on now) that if you buy a gift card for $100 you get a twenty dollar gift certificate to use at a specific time!! First time shopping here at 7am. I am over 65 and I showed my ID to seniors shop. The deli lady was great. The cashier was awesome and she's usually a bookkeeper. I have been a regular customer at 2 Gelsons markets which are 2 miles apart for many years. I have been going to both since I live close to both of them. One is in Dana Point and the other in Laguna Beach. We all know they cost more than most all other grocery stores. However until the last six months or so it was worth to pay the extra money for the convenience of them being close to my home and the fact that they were not as crowded during a pandemic and they had certain items other stores did not carry. However I am done with both of them. Over the last several months I have found them attempting to sell food items that have expired on numerous occasions. In the last 2 weeks alone on 3 different occasions I have had to remove numerous yogurt cartons from their shelves because they had expired by as much as 3 weeks beyond their expiration date. When I bring the items to the manager I am greeted with nothing more than a stare as if I shouldn't be bothering them with this. For a store that pride themselves on cleanliness and being a "cut above" it should be embarrassing that they are attempting to sell expired food items that could be harmful to their customers. I would not suggest shopping there unless you want to spend the time to check the expiration date on every item you purchase. This has not been limited to yogurt. I have found expired milk cartons and bread and margarine on several different occasions. It doesn't seem to change anything by pointing this out to them. I know we are in a pandemic however I have not seen this problem in other grocery stores that I visit. I think they take their customers for granted and I think that's a big mistake on their part. read more

My husband and I wanted to spend a few hours on the beach and decided to grab a couple of sandwiches for lunch so we stopped by Gelson's. Note: you need to take a number for sandwich orders, other wise you will be waiting a while. I ordered the sandwich combo for $9.99 which included a sandwich of choice and two sides ( any sides priced under $12 a lb). I ordered the pesto chicken pasta salad and pesto spinach salad with feta and walnuts. You can also select as many toppings as you like for the sandwiches without being charged extra. This is a first since most places charge extra for avocado. The baguette or French roll make for great sandwiches. A great sandwich combo and the beach. It can't get better than that !! read more

I have never before seen such an organized and clean store....ever! When I walked down the first isle, I couldn't help but notice that all the food labels were perfectly turned forward and perfectly aligned. This made a huge impact on me! I also wish I lived down here in Monarch Beach, with a view of the ocean, sunsets everyday, and that I was a billionairess. This is a place where you never have to bag your own groceries or scan your own food items. No, the check stands are staffed with checkers waiting in the open to wave you down when you're looking for an open lane. Initially, you'll probably have some sticker shock at some of the prices. I always shop on a budget and take advantage of the weekly discounts that appear in the circulars. When the time is right, I pounce! Check online for the weekly specials, which can been less expensive than what any other store offers--you just have to wait for it. If you are a foodie that likes to cook, you'll find a lot of specialty ingredients you could otherwise only find online. Gelson's has your fancy olive oils, artisan coffees, pomegranate molasses, finishing salt, high-end pastas and sauces, and even some nice serving wares. Produce is pricey but the quality is superior to 99% of the other markets. Plenty of organic options, too. Samples of fruits are always available for customers to help themselves. I love going to the service deli for a sandwich combo, $9.99, or half sandwich combo, $6.95. These sandwiches are always made fresh and are absolutely delicious. Try the seasonal salads (varies) and the perennials like broccoli with mandarin oranges, fresh mixed fruit, wheat berries salad, pasta pesto salad, and Waldorf salad. You can sample as many different deli salads as you like before settling on the one that makes your tastebuds sing. This Gelson's is located nearby the beach in a very affluent area with fancy hotels. Please know that the prices here are higher than other mainstream markets, but you get a lot more when you walk through the doors. read more

This is a pricey specialty grocery store. I love this store because they are the only store that carries my Watermelon juice with any degree of consistency. I also love their Almond Custard treats from the bakery, they are so yummy. But the star of the show is their Prime Rib, sliced fresh to order in the deli section. This is some of the best I've had and it's reasonably priced at $19.99/lb. Put it with a salad or some veggies and you have a quick and delicious meal. Funny thing I was in there the other day went to the deli wanted some roast beef. The guy at the counter asked me if I had a ticket now I have no idea you need to get a ticket because I guess I went by the thing on the side that I didn't know where it was anyway I didn't have a ticket. I was one of two people standing there well I wasn't standing I was in my Wheelchair. Do you have a guy was already being helped so that would mean I was next but the young man couldn't realize that I was next without a ticket. Sure it's a little more expensive, but you get what you pay for. The store is beautifully maintained and has may hard to find items. Their cheese selection is amazing. i've now bought 4 things from Gelson's that have been expired and/or has mold on it. it is the closest grocery store to me and I always go there even though it is so expensive. I bought a almond butter that was literally hard as a rock and was easily 4 months old!! they wouldn't give me a refund, just told me to chose something else. then have bought TWO hummus' with mold sitting right on top right when you take off the plastic packaging. I enjoy shopping at Gelson's market. Their produce department is wonderful with fresh fruits and vegetables. Their meat department always has nice variety of different meats. Love their bakery, always fresh and delicious specially their cakes, if you have any kind of parties don't hesitate to get cakes and cookies from them. This market is very clean which I appreciate and you always can find baskets to start shopping, they're very organized and have enough staff to take care of you and other things in the store. The only thing I would criticize about this market is the price of some items that's ridiculously high. For example their precut fruits that they sell in medium containers are about $38.00 to $52.00 which you can get for half price or less in other markets other than that I would recommend everyone to shop there. read more

When you walk into Gelson's you immediately know that this is not your typical grocery store. Walk down any isle and you will noticed how everything is "faced" and how clean the isles are. Go into the produce section and you see the perfect display of fruits and vegetables. You can close you eyes when selecting as everything looks perfect and I have never had a bad "pick". Recently I was in the market and the produce clerk offered me a taste of a Mini-Kiss melon. This was one of the most flavorful and tasty melon I have ever had. Got two to take home and they both were just as good as the sample. Yes, the prices are higher that you would find in most stores but the service (they take out your items from the cart, always two people at a register) in all departments and the quality of the food makes up for the price increase. read more

We stopped in to Gelson's Market yesterday and picked up a few things we are visiting in the area. We chose some items from the deli counter, 4 different salads (Very pricey) but they looked so good. We asked for a pound of each...the pesto salad, a pear chicken salad, a potato salad and a shrimp salad ($19.99 for a pound). Every one of them were terrible...no flavor...there were 4 of us and we had some ribs that we made ourselves to go with the salads. We ended up throwing the salads in the trash! $40 worth of salads! The store is a beautiful store... but the prices were extremely out of reach...saw a small package of Lamb Chops- $60!! I realize lamb is pricey, but this is outrageous... read more
