I'm not sure what the specific value prop of Gelson's Market is. Things are overpriced, quality of products is not amazingly fresh, and the store is small. The decor is a specific style, sure, if that's your thing. Customer service is nice, but ultimately I don't pay attention to that kind of stuff. Utility over everything else, you could treat a customer like shit, but if you serve amazing sandwiches at the deli counter, welcome friends! I digress. Like I said, I'm not sure what the value prop of Gelson's Market is. The store feels kinda claustrophobic and that seems to be the case with many of the Gelson's that I've walked into, not just this one. It's like they're trying to simulate the "small market" feel, but in cosmetic appearance only and nothing else. If you look at the produce, and the meat selections, they look like the same or similar offerings you get from other grocery stores, but marked up. The only thing that really stood out to me at Gelson's was the bakery, but that literally cannot be the only reason I come into a grocery store. The total experience has to sell. I guess one nice thing is that they have shopping carts inside the store? So, I'm going to refrain from giving this place a negative review, but I'm not seeing the value prop for blowing this store out of the water with a 5 star review either. read more

If you don't care about prices this would be a 5-star review. This high-end market woos you the moment you walk in with their low-lighting and dark interior decor. The deli, bakery, and meat departments all sell very high quality products but have no doubt you'll pay a pretty penny to buy the best. As others have mentioned, this is a great place to get a lunchtime sandwich. As you walk down the clean, highly organized aisles, you'll notice they have many products and brands you won't find at other stores. They also have many products you CAN find at other stores but the prices are significantly higher here. If you're an average Joe this is a fun place to pop in and make some purchases of quality food from time to time but you certainly won't be able to afford it on a regular basis. read more

This 5-Star Review is for Tammi at the register who went waaaay out of her way to set up a gorgeous bouquet of flowers for my mom's birthday this week. I wanted to stop by her office and drop off a nice desktop bouquet/plant... Tammi (hope I'm spelling your name correctly) was really kind and thoughtful, and placed the flowers in a custom-fit decorative box to cover up that ugly pot, as well as wrapped them up in quality cellophane and some lovely colored paper... she even stuck one of those nifty longstem upside-down pitchforks with a birthday note in it that matched the flowers perfectly =) Now that is truly service that stands out. She could have simply checked me out, handed me a receipt, and said "thanks." Her going out of her way like that will make my want to return for all local floral/gift needs when I'm in a jam. Other employees at Gelson's should take note and follow suit. As a sidenote, the lady at the flower booth also used to pin carnations on my lapel for a buck -- great deal if you're looking for a little extra snap in your step that day... The hot deli section on the far right is great and there's a good variety. The imported cheeses on the far left is great as well. Everything in between is just regular supermarket stuff and the produce is expensive. Its fresh but so is the stuff at Whole Foods & Sprouts down the street...and its not overpriced! If you're buying a meal/snack at the last sec...Whole Foods is on Barranca x Jamboree and they have desserts! And great produce. Here's the deal Gelson's, I love that your staff treat me like a queen and that you beautifully stock your shelves and play pretty music and stuff. All of that is that is all fine and dandy. It's an enjoyable buying experience. But you're not open any later than Whole Foods or Best Buy and you charge more for the items that are more high end than [Ralph's, Von's, Albertson's] than Whole Foods or Best Buy does... so I feel like the fine veneer of a fancy grocery you have is really just that. And if your beer section could have just kicked it up a notch, I'd go for just that... Sorry, I'll just go where I can dependably find the items I really need. 5 stars for customer service, stocking and cleanliness. 1 for selection that is super hit or miss for what you may need and charging a lot more for the high end stuff. read more

I've been coming to this Gelsons sporadically over the last few years. Sure, you are asked to pay anywhere from 10-20% more for food but that's how people with gobs of money roll (?). To be fair, their produce is always top notch so that might be worth it. But for stuff like chips, salad dressing, etc....go elsewhere. I don't have gobs of money so I only go to Gelson's for the following: - Prepared foods from their deli - their roasted turkey is delicious and so is a bunch of their salads. Sample away! - Flowers. Best arrangements in town. Hubby has learned I love their sometimes cutting edge arrangements and fresh selection so I can expect a bud or two from here on Vday and our anniversary. - Great service. Everyone is super helpful even when they're super busy (deli people, I'm looking at you.) Given the snooty kind of people I've witnessed them having to deal with, I hope they are all well-compensated. - Fancy things like black truffle olive oil. But even then you realize the Whole Foods market down the street has more of that high-falutin' stuff but that comes with horrific parking. Anyway, that's my two cents! read more

Reminds me of Whole Foods and Gene's Fine Foods (Saratoga, CA) all meshed into one. Yes it's definitely overpriced with similar items at Trader Joe's for bucks cheaper. However, they do have an impressive selection of cheeses and the service is incredible. I'm selective as to what I buy here, but if you're looking for top quality meats, seafood etc then get it here. For other grocery type items you can find elsewhere, get it elsewhere! You come here for the gourmet stuff! I mean, there is milk in glass bottles -- how cool is that? I always love to come here to buy 4-5 small bowls of salad. They are delicious! However, I often need to remind the staff not to include the liquid. It could make the Mediterranean salad too soggy. Their Greek salad and coleslaw are really good, too!! read more

I usually dont write reviews, but the experience i had today at gelson's deli section was so bad that i felt like ive been insulted.. I walked in this morning and wanted to get some delis, and since i was the only one standing there and the deli lady was not helping others i passed on taking a number, but the lady ignored me for about 5 minutes and even though she made eye contact few times she did not even acknowledge my presence with a customary "ill be right with you" or anything like that.. she was "organizing" things i guess, a couple of guys walk in and take a number and then she now came to ask whose next, i told her with a smile that i clearly came first but didn't take a number because there was no one but me at the time, she said sorry i only serve people with number and moved on to ask the guys what their order is, and the manner that she was talking with was pretty dismissive.. Customers come to gelson's knowing that theyll pay a higher mark up on everything but expecting a better experience and higher level of customer service, sure technically i shudve taken a number, but that does not give the employee the right to ignore my presence, make me wait for long and then talk to me in a bad tone... I want to be fair and mention that almost all other store employees were very courteous and nice, but it only takes one bad interaction to phase customers off, specially in a store that builds its reputation on being an "upscale market" where we serve u the best and where we make things very convenient to you so that ull pay more for stuff u can get else where for much cheaper. I doubt ill be coming back to shop at gelson's, and with some employees that behaves in this manner i bet gelson's will lose much more customers.., just my 2 cents.. read more

The store setup was nice, flowers were fresh, fruits and veggies are fresh too but most are overpriced. The alcohol section was fairly organized but most are the same price as the winery and 20-30% higher than Total Wine. I didn't dress in fancy clothes today because I was on my way to the gym and since I have not yet been to Gelson so I wanted to get something for my A5 Wagyu dinner Bad experience the manager thought i was a shoplifter:) yup even said to my face "someone stole a bottle of Silver Oak yesterday " Uh that was what i was looking at and thinking about buying but it's 20% higher than I normally pay for I looked at Duckhorn Merlot 20 bucks more than most places. I'm not going back and not recommend this place if you're Asians. I bought 6 bottles of Sterlings after my workout because it's 6 bucks cheaper (on sales 50%) My pet peeve? Racism!!! read more

Very recently, my new thing to do is grocery shop at the gourmet/more upscale grocery stores that I don't have in my neck of the woods. Of course I only do this when I'm already in the area for another purpose. I do not drive 45+ minutes just to solely go grocery shopping! This is the second Gelson's I've been to. The other was in Hollywood. This location is equally nice. I love the ready-made foods section. I love their lemon garlic rotisserie chicken, chicken & sundried tomato bowtie pasta salad, and their spinach pesto pasta salad. read more

This is a place where you can find anything! Their quality is fantastic but their prices are too high! I was looking for geese and all stores were sold out and they were the only ones that had it but compare to other places their price was outrageous . If I can afford their prices I would definitely shop there but it is not a store for average consumer. read more

I've never been to a Gelson's before, but it totally reminds me of Whole Foods! It's really nice and clean inside. Everything is really well organized. The food seem so appetizing too. A lot of people were ordering to go and when that happens I trust their food is good. Food is the only time where I'll happily follow the crowd haha. I called this market because I was in the area. I've been searching specifically for acai smoothie packs and have been having such a hard time finding them. Their service on the phone was awesome, quick, and efficient!! Turns out they had the unsweetened and sweetened packs available! SO HAPPY!!!! Also got two bags of caramel bites (2 for $5-sale) to make Halloween caramel apples! So excited! read more

I really like this store however today one of the employees guarding the entrance was a bit pushy with the mask rule. I get that you need to have it on in the store but we did not appreciate her signaling us to put one on when we stepped out of the car. We were still in the freaking parking lot doors wide open, around no one, nowhere near the entrance or even the sidewalk. Please do not have your employees pointing and throwing up hand signals to people before they get to the store sidewalk. As far as specialty grocery stores go, Gelson's is as good as it gets! Of course, they can't be my full time grocery shopping spot, but I love popping in for specialty items and weekend treats. If you're into charcuterie, their salami counter and cheese selections are top notch, comparable to Whole Foods (and definitely far superior to Sprouts). I also just had their Boar Head Roast Beast. Excellent for sandwiches! Another item I recently purchased was their brioche hamburger buns. It's items such as these that kick home cooking up a few notches! Other items to try: Poke Yellow tail specialty chocolates Beer selection- they have Racer 5 IPA! Exceptional produce Yes, you are going to pay more for your products; however, if you're shopping here, I think you are already aware of the pricing and are willing to pay more for exceptional products. I go grocery shopping almost every other day and was looking for a new place to shop at. I've heard of Gelson's, but never tried & decided to drop by since it was right next to my work. Right when I walked into the store I was amazed. The store is a little TOO perfect, but it looked homey/welcoming at the same time. It's probably one of the best grocery store I've set foot in in terms of look/layout (yes it beats whole foods, but price wise it's about the same). Right when you walk in you'll see a salad bar/soup bar and a nice big deli area. They have Boar's Head deli here which is awesome, but it's really pricey compared to other shops I've been to (it's about 13.99-16/lb here). I swear everything on the racks/walls were neatly aligned and the colors here are so vibrant and correctly placed. Their meat/seafood dept in the back was really fresh, can't wait to pick up a piece of steak next time. They've got a large bread aisle as well and I was stoked they carried Alpine Valley bread (every variety) and the expiration dates were longer than a week thank god! (normally I get Alpine Valley @ Sprouts, but they expire a lot sooner). Checkout here is similar to Trader Joe's, you place your items on the little table thing for the cashier. Wide selection of organic foods... but crazy ridiculously expensive! I'm giving this place 4 stars for quality though. I love going up and down the aisles of this place, exploring all the new and unseen things that aren't found in other typical supermarkets. Store is very clean and organized which is appreciated. They have clean carts available for customers to use and they make sure customers wear their masks - but the reason I'm rating it a two star is because of hypocrisy I witnessed while just here. There are signs notifying people that you may not consume your food or beverages while in the store; however, while going through the checkstand today around 3pm. My cashier named Kelly ate several times while I was in the checkstand. I thought this was very rude because it isn't the first time I've seen this employee do this, and each time she lifts up her mask exposing her face. This must be fixed! read more

Disappointing that the grocery store is open till 10pm but starts putting away the majority of prepared foods before 8:30pm or earlier sometimes. Why stay open if it's all put away? So I started going in the morning before work, they open at 7am, but barely anything is put out till after 8:15am. I experienced very poor customer service last night behind the deli salad counter. I asked when they would have chicken with almonds again, I was getting tired of the tuna. She proceeded to argue with me about the availability of the chicken almonds and that it's never in the counter and that I didn't know what I was talking about. How would I know about the chicken almond salad if it wasn't in the case previously? She needs to learn how to treat customers more respectfully. read more

It's eclectic shopping with unique brands and upscale items. Yes this place is pricey, but it's clean and you can get through the checkout lane pretty quickly. They have a nice selection of beer and wine, and their deli area is top notch. The salad bar is a little costly, but they have so many items, you can't go wrong making your own lunch here. read more
